  208. films have been re-released to American theaters since he "broke through"
  209. with Rumble In The Bronx?

  264. I've been seeing commercials for Twin Dragons on tv as being hyped for
  265. release in theaters this weekend (I believe). Chan plays twin brothers:
  266. one's a spy, and the other's an orchestra conductor (?!). Chan looks
  267. younger in this film (his hair seems to date him quite well), and from what
  268. I remember the voice dubs seemed pretty obvious as well. I'll probably go
  269. see it regardless...

  289. I think that's the one I saw.  Its probably at least 7 years old since I =
  290. saw it in a US theatre about 5 years ago.   I seem to remember one of the =
  291. characters being a conductor.  The F/x are very weird since they use very =
  292. old superimposing technology to give the illusion of two Jackies.  There =
  293. is one sequence involving a video game enhanced fight that is truly =
  294. inspired. =20

  318.      An opening title in THE MOD SQUAD conscientiously defines "mod" for
  319. the viewing audience, then goes the extra mile of defining "squad" as
  320. well.  It's your first clue that the target audience is that
  321. ultra-desirable -- and, apparently, lexically-challenged -- youth
  322. demographic, rather than primarily baby boomers familiar with the
  323. 1968-1972 television series.  Not surprisingly, THE MOD SQUAD is a loud
  324. and generally stupid action film with a dose of teen-angst melodrama.
  325. Impressively, it even compounds the misery with a ridiculously convoluted
  326. plot.
  327.  
  328.      The basic set-up, like that of the series, involves three troubled
  329. young people (back in the day, they'd be called "juvenile delinquents")
  330. recruited by L.A.P.D. Capt. Adam Greer (Dennis Farina) to be a unique
  331. undercover trio.  Faced with the alternatives of prison or police work,
  332. Julie Barnes (Claire Danes), Pete Cochran (Giovanni Ribisi) and Linc Hayes
  333. (Omar Epps) are assigned to "get into places nobody else can."  One of the
  334. places they still seem adapt at getting into is trouble, trouble which
  335. gets particularly nasty when Greer turns up dead and implicated in drug
  336. trafficking.  For no really good reason other than a continuation of the
  337. film, the "Mod Squad" begins its own investigation, uncovering a
  338. conspiracy which would baffle "X-Files" creator Chris Carter.
  339.  
  340.      You might think that a dense, multi-layered plot would indicate faith
  341. in audience intelligence, but you'd be very mistaken indeed.  THE MOD
  342. SQUAD uses its innumerable narrative threads like shiny objects to
  343. distract an infant, never really caring whether they make for a more
  344. interesting or engaging story.  Julie spends most of the film getting
  345. re-involved with an old flame (Josh Brolin), while Pete and Linc track
  346. down leads in a plot line that runs mostly parallel.  Meanwhile, Pete has
  347. a sensitive moment with his estranged parents, a goofy drug dealer
  348. (Michael Lerner) dances with Linc to "My Favorite Things," Pete and Julie
  349. almost kinda sorta get together, and Linc's car is the object of
  350. ever-wackier damage at Pete's hand.  It doesn't even matter that many of
  351. the sub-plots drift together by the film's conclusion; its Short Attention
  352. Span Theater mentality makes it not at all worth the effort to keep up.
  353.  
  354.      It's also a dim-witted and trite action film that has the nerve to
  355. wink ironically at its place in the pantheon of dim-witted and trite
  356. action films.  Pete (given an off-kilter sensibility by Ribisi, one of the
  357. few reasons to keep watching) comments incredulously late in the film
  358. about "dirty cops, drug deals...I can't believe this actually happens.  I
  359. feel like I should be saying 'I'm getting too old for this sh*t.'"  Cute
  360. gag, only THE MOD SQUAD hasn't earned that level of self-deprecation.
  361. It's the kind of film where a guy spills his guts to someone who has
  362. chased him down yelling "I'm a cop!" despite the absence of any badge or
  363. weapon.  It's the kind of film where the villains spell out their plans in
  364. more detail than James Bond baddies.  And it's the kind of film that truly
  365. defines gratuitious sex, violence and profanity.  A bad movie can't be a
  366. commentary on the state of bad movie-making.
  367.  
  368.      The strange thing is that much of that formulaic foolishness could
  369. have worked if THE MOD SQUAD had been played straighter as an homage to
  370. formulaic early-70s cop dramas.  The only time the film is at all
  371. diverting is when B. C. Smith's funky retro-score plays under a dimly lit
  372. chase scene, giving it that faux-gritty vibe.  Director Scott Silver
  373. simply can't maintain that energy, not when he's wasting time on choppy
  374. music video editing of his characters' tender personal moments.  THE MOD
  375. SQUAD is busy and headache-inducing, and rarely even manages to channel
  376. that into viscerally effective action.  It's just another lousy piece of
  377. brand name recycling, so clearly pitched at a dumbed-down audience it's
  378. surprising that, when taking the time to define the film's title, they
  379. risked spotting us the "the."
  380.  
  381.      On the Renshaw scale of 0 to 10 diddly Squads:  2.

Towards the end of the movie, when Kujan pushes Verbal Kint while questioning him about Keaton's demise, does Kint AT ANY POINT say "I did it. I killed Keaton"? I have watched that movie so many times and I can clearly hear him say "I did - I did see Keaton get killed". In an interview Bryan Singer stated that he (Kint) admitted killing Keaton. Where in the movie does he say this?!

  584. I did, and the loss of flesh tones didn't make up for the clearer picture
  585. of the DVD.

  587. 3) Technology policing.  Why can't I forward through the stupid FBI warning
  588. on DVDs?  Is that warning going to stop me from doing something illegal?
  589. No, my upbringing between right and wrong will stop me.
  590.  
  591. 4) No commonality between formats.  Dual layer.  Single Side.  Full and
  592. Widescreen versions.  Labels inconsistent across the platform.  On some
  593. DVDs, you put the label with Widescreen "down" to play WS version, on
  594. others it's "up" to play WS.  What's up with that?
  595.  
  596. I swore I would NEVER own a DVD player.  But I was given it at Xmas, so I
  597. have one.  But I don't actively support it.  I still buy LDs and will for
  598. quite some time.  The discs are larger, but it doesn't take away from the
  599. fact they are more true to the original director's vision than DVDs.
  600. Richer picture, CD quality sound, and no damn Divx.

  838. time and took potshots at DVDs at every opportunity but after finally =
  839. buying one I will never go back to LDs. =20

  841. The image quality is now better in my humble opinion on DVD.  Especially =
  842. if you have a player with component outputs and a compatable TV.  I can't =
  843. speak to the technical compression rates but it looks great on my TV.  =
  844. When the players first came out I could see really bad pixelation but the =
  845. new players are being designed to overcome that.  Some of the earlier =
  846. discs had problems as well. =20
  847.  
  848. I like the convenience of dropping in a small disc for the entire movie.  =
  849. I like the ability to freeze and slow the entire disc without paying =
  850. through the nose for a special edition disc.  I like the additional =
  851. materials that you never got on LD.  A couple of weeks ago I rented Spinal =
  852. Tap and it included an audio track with the director and producer as well =
  853. as a separate track with the actors.  It also included over 90 minutes of =
  854. outtakes as well as the original 20 minute film.  There was other =
  855. additional material that I just couldn't get to because I had to return =
  856. it.  There was easily over 6 hours of entertainment on that one disc.  For =
  857. LDs something like that would easily cost over $100 and the rental store =
  858. would typically not carry the enhanced version.   Even a disc that isn't =
  859. even noted as special can easily include interesting stuff.  The Searchers =
  860. disc includes biographical material on the actors and director as well as =
  861. trailers and some behind the scenes programs. =20
  862.  
  863. Finally the cost:  I have been buying DVDs for an average of less than $15 =
  864. each.  Yesterday I bought 2001 on special for $6 including shipping and =
  865. tax!   LDs typically cost at least $25 each and went up from there. =20
  866.

  937. I have a friend to is also a huge DVD supporter, and he had this to add:

  941. If you like a muddier, albeit mildly 'warmer' picture, Laser Disc is the
  942. way to go.  I will admit that DVD tends to be harsh is places (i.e. the
  943. occasional pixelization in early pressings), but for overall quality and
  944. features it stomps LD's sorry butt.  He forgot to mention that the
  945. picture has about 400-450 horizontal lines of resolution about 225-250
  946. on LD.  New generation SVHS is now out-performing LD at about 300 lines.
  947. DVD ain't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but its precision
  948. is not open for debate. 
  949.  
  950. His statements about cool stuff only being available on LD are
  951. completely false.  Not a single major distributor is currently pressing
  952. shit onto LD.  Criterion has all but recanted their proclamation that
  953. they will continue to support the LD format indefinitely.  On the other
  954. hand, special editions abound on DVD, and while not everything is yet
  955. available, virtually nothing new is available LD or ever will be again.
  956.  
  957. The same argument can be made in support of hi-fi phonograph and vinyl.
  958. Yes, you are hearing the beloved interactivity of bass and treble at
  959. harmonic levels not reached by CD (like those only a dog can hear).  But
  960. more importantly, YOU'RE LISTENING TO SURFACE NOISE, YOU IDIOT!!!--not
  961. sounds that the artist or record company intended, but good old
  962. fashioned sonic garbage.

  1159. must now that it is inevidible (sp?) that laser disc will go obselete sometime
  1160. in the near future, and I am proud to say that DVD will probally be the one
  1161. MOST responsible for that. I own a DVD E-mail discussion group called DVDTALK.
  1162. We talk about EVERYTHING dvd related, but mostly just try to steer each other
  1163. to the BEST DVD DEALS on the net. Online purchaing of DVD's is the ONLY WAY TO
  1164. GO....Dont ever buy retail again....When you can go to www.800.com and buy
  1165. waterboy for 9.99 SHIPPING INCLUDED. Or to www.bigstardvd.com and can buy
  1166. blade, the saint, pretty woman, body heat, jade, or armageddon for 9.99 each,
  1167. or urban legend for 12.49...I say NEVER buy retail again. LOL!!! We currently
  1168. have about 150 or so of the NICEST, FRIENDLIEST, MOST DVD CRAZY people you will
  1169. ever want to meet. MANY of which have owned ans still do own a laserdisc
  1170. player, and ONLY because of the large amounts of $$ that they previously put
  1171. into it, they have deceided to keep it. But they are slowly buying dvd's to
  1172. replace the LD's. I cant tell you how many people on that list have written in
  1173. COMPARING the dvd to the Ld that they own, and they cant say enough bad things
  1174. about the LD...LOL....Please, I want to beg of anyone on here that has been
  1175. thinking of buying a dvd player (which I personally) believe to be the best
  1176. investment that any MOVIE LOVING person will ever make....So please just go to
  1177. your local retailer and try one out for yourself, dont take my word for it, and
  1178. PLEASE dont take Ryans....:-) Just see for yourself. You know I used to own
  1179. about 100 vhs movies...but since i bought my dvd player about 1 year ago, I
  1180. currently own 210 dvd's....I am SOOO impressed with this machine that I cant
  1181. stop buying dvd's...LOL.....I will be more than happy to answer any questions
