  101. foreign movies, and I remember him telling me about an old swedish movie 
  102. that had a similar premise... Don't remember more than that though..But that
  103. one didn't have Cruise for sure.

  510. unintelligent, and I have no tolerance for STUPID people.  In this day and
  511. age, where political correctness reigns, it's sad to see people covering
  512. for the faults of others.  She was STUPID, and obviously couldn't read.

  514. I have no regrets in what I said, and I do believe she was STUPID.  There
  515. is no excuse that you could give me to NOT call her STUPID.  You may find

  555. Hey Guys,  I've been on the road for about a month so I have probably
  556. missed hundreds of riveting emails.    Hopefully I will be around for
  557. a little while this time and can participate.

  559. Upon my return I ran across the very detailed explanation from Ryan
  560. on why he thinks somebody is stupid and how his courage allows him to
  561. make such bold statements in the face of the cowardly masses.  I
  562. thought this list was about movies?    I'm sure that there must exist
  563. a "stupid" list for such discussions.

  565. Anyway, I finally bought a DVD player and began watching the Usual
  566. Suspects Director's comments last night.  It was fascinating.

  725. developed.  The "mixing black-&-white with color" gimmick, a clever=20

  745.      When Mary Sue introduces Pleasantville boys to sex, strange things=20
  746. start to happen.  Foremost is the mysterious appearance of color in the=20
  747. previously black-&-white world.  The citizens of Pleasantville also disco=

  749. that their formerly agreeable lives are hollow and that only through chan=

  751. can they become fulfilling once again.  Although this is supposed to be a=

  753. positive evolution in the citizenry, it instead takes on the melancholy=20

  756.      There is a lot to like about "Pleasantville", but such things are mi=

  762. There is also a clumsy attempt to reverse the attitudes of its two modern=

  790. thrilling or suspenseful, but it didn't bog down in boredom either. I know
  791. this isn't the greatest review, but that's how I felt about the movie. It
  792. didn't stir up anything in me, other than just mildly entertain me for an
  793. afternoon. I walked out of the theater thinking "Hm. Well, that was okay.

  958. try Suncoast Motion Picture Company (should be in a mall near you).  They

  961. web site).  They specialise in out of print videos.  If you buy from Video

  1139. minority groups, or as a metaphor for anything else -- just blood-suckin',
  1140. sun-hatin', butt-kickin' vampires.  JOHN CARPENTER'S VAMPIRES is the kind
  1141. of slick horror package that's increasingly hard to find:  raucous,
  1142. sanguine and almost utterly devoid of sociological sub-text.

  1144.      Based on John Steakley's novel _Vampire$_, it incorporates that
  1145. oh-so-90s-vogue vocation of vampire hunting into the context of an old
  1146. spaghetti Western.  Jack Crow (James Woods) is one of many vampire hunters
  1147. on a Vatican-funded mission to eradicate the plague of the undead.  One
  1148. night his team is obliterated by Valek (Thomas Ian Griffith), the oldest
  1149. vampire ever to walk the earth.  Crow and his one surviving associate
  1150. Montoya (Daniel Baldwin), accompanied by newly-recruited young priest
  1151. Father Guiteau (Tim Guinee), have to find Valek and kill him before he can
  1152. locate a mysterious relic which might give him the power to walk in the
  1153. daylight.  Add plenty of flying body parts, stark Western vistas and
  1154. Carpenter's own twangy Tex-Mex score, and you have a simple, economical
  1155. horror yarn.
  1156.  
  1157.      It all makes for fine gruesome entertainment, but it should have been
  1158. better.  John Carpenter has always been able to incorporate wry, weird
  1159. humor into his films -- remember the crawling head in THE THING, or
  1160. practically all of BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, for that matter? -- and he
  1161. manages again to pull of a few nice bits of black comedy.  Woods, playing
  1162. Crow with snarling relish and a serious bad attitude, gets most of the
  1163. choice lines, all of which are either unprintable or incredibly offensive
  1164. or both.  Carpenter's sense of the horrific usually involves a kind of
  1165. self-aware outrageousness, turning his displays of blood-spraying special
  1166. effects into absurdist cinematic goofs too purely escapist to get worked
  1167. up over.
  1168.  
  1169.      Unfortunately, VAMPIRES keeps upsetting its delicate balance of humor
  1170. and horror by taking frequent detours into mean-spiritedness.  It's one
  1171. thing to play with notions of political incorrectness; it's quite another
  1172. to get off on it.  The only human female characters in VAMPIRES are
  1173. hookers who hang around just long enough to get naked and get turned into
  1174. lunchmeat; when Woods really wants to insult someone, a bit of gay-baiting
  1175. always fits the bill.  Even if you grant Carpenter and screenwriter Don
  1176. Jakoby the slack they seem to be searching for -- it's okay that a woman
  1177. is stripped and smacked around because she's a vampire-in-waiting, and
  1178. it's okay that a Catholic priest participates in a human sacrifice because
  1179. another priest is a stand-up guy -- the tone simply gets nastier than it
  1180. needs to be.  Everyone is too unpleasant too often.
  1181.  
  1182.      The thing about VAMPIRES is that when Carpenter rolls up his sleeves
  1183. and dives into genre action, it's a lot of fun.  In fact, if he had rolled
  1184. with the tone of the first 25 minutes, he might have had a minor classic
  1185. on his hands.  The opening assault on a New Mexico vampire "nest" is wild,
  1186. silly and superbly paced; Valek's first attack is a creepy and crafty
  1187. splatter-fest.  From there, VAMPIRES gets progressively more angry and
  1188. ominous, before it finally rights itself for the climactic confrontation
  1189. between Crow and Valek.  There's not enough interest in characterization
  1190. here to make the casual brutality of Crow and Montoya somehow
  1191. psychologically appropriate.  Psychology's got virtually nothing to do
  1192. with JOHN CARPENTER'S VAMPIRES, a slice of Halloween mayhem that works
  1193. wonderfully when it lets the good times roll.  For a vampire movie without
  1194. a "message," it offers some mixed messages it could do without.
  1195.

  1255. Drama: Upon his release from prison, a former skinhead (Norton) tries to

  1257. path of hatred and violence.  Undeniably one of the more powerful films 
  1258. you'll see this year, "American History X" is a thought-provoking, 
  1259. moving, and visually stunning picture that features a performance from 
  1260. Norton that will certainly earn him another Oscar nomination.  That said, 
  1261. it's clearly not for younger kids and gets its R rating from nonstop 
  1262. profanity, violence (shootings, prison rape), sexual material, and 
  1263. nudity.

  1311. Drama: In 19th century France a former convict (Neeson) continually 
  1312. tries to elude a police officer (Rush) whose lifelong pursuit of the man 
  1313. has turned into an obsession. If you're not familiar with the story or 
  1314. have never seen the musical, this production might impress you, as well 
  1315. it should. Featuring some decent performances and great technical work, 
  1316. the film is good. It's just not great, and lacking the power and 
  1317. emotional thrust that the musical so effectively presented, the film 
  1318. comes off as a flatter and much weaker version of novelist Victor Hugo's 
  1319. work. Grossing nearly $14 million domestically, the film's PG-13 rating 
  1320. comes from violence and some sexual content.

  1377. When I was in London ten years ago I rented Highlander.  I had seen it a
  1378. dozen times before, but was completely shocked with the inclusion of a
  1379. previously cut scene.  It's another  flashback scene,
  1380. (***********------Spoiler to this scene------************)  to WWII France
  1381. (or Germany) and the Highlander finds a little girl in the rubble of a
  1382. building.  He picks her up just before being gunned down by an SS officer.
  1383. The girl is totally stunned by having this dead guy on top of her, but of
  1384. course he opens his eyes and smiles.  She gasps, and he says, "Hey, it's a
  1385. kind of magic".  He stands up, making the nazi nearly pee himself, then
  1386. kills the nazi.  I don't understand why this scene was cut from the
  1387. original, because it explains who Rachael is and why she knows about his
  1388. powers, and also why they never got romantically involved.  It's also kind
  1389. of cool that the last thing he ever says to her is "Hey it's a kind of
  1390. magic".  It puts a nice, rounded, finishing touch on their relationship.
  1391.  
  1392. My question is, does anybody know how I can get a copy of it here in the
  1393. states?  Is it in the Director's Edition of the movie?
