I was going to write exactly the same mail (including the 100kb of
space).
I mean I get these long emails and then I think something like: Hurray,
finally there is some nice person writing me a long email! and then it's
only 4 times the same mail. <whine> I'm so lonely </whine>.
Can we agree on some sort of policy or agenda on subscriptions? I
noticed that we are subscribed to the flickfilosopher (at least we are
getting mails from them) - is that true?
I personally don't mind either subscriptions, but some might and
those already subscribed have the great pleasure of getting two. And
we all know how hard it is to unsubscribe from lists.
BTW: Any views on Wild Things and especially the recent
Newman/Sarandon flick - forgot the title - I think it's something with
an S in it. Worth seeing?

Hi Guys,
I'm back. I've been on the road for about a week. Or did you
notice?
I agree about long, repetitive messages. If you want to address a
particular part of a previous message then cut and paste but please
don't resend entire messages.
As far as mailing lists are concerned, I have no interest in being
placed on any such lists and instead take offense that my address is
being abused in such a way. I assume the manager of this list does
not in any way do such things or condone it either. Spamming is the
one great evil in my internet experience.

Which Tony are you talking about? Short Tony or tall Tony?
If it's short Tony (Leung Chiu-wai) you're talking about, I agree 100 percent.
He's probably the best Hong Kong actor left in Hong Kong.

I'm the listowner of The Flick Filosopher list, and I have no
idea who signed this list up for my list. I assume it must be
the listowner here, because subs must be confirmed by the owners

I didn't like this movie at all...Ok I must admit I was a little bit
surprised when you see the three in his room with the bottle of
champagne and the following scene is nice to watch ;)
But after that it gets so predictable...I mean ...once you've figured
out that there's going to be a lots of twists you can always guess wich
ones...and who will die etc.
so after a while I was pretty bored...
No sir I didn't like it at all!!!

Short Tony - Tony Leung Chiu-wai is famous for: "Hard-Boiled,"
"Chungking Express" and "Happy Together." He also sings occassionally.
Tall Tony - Tony Leung Kai-fei is famous for "The Lover" (also starring
Jane March and directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud), "A Better Tomorrow III"
and scores of other movies. He also occassionally sings.
To add to the confusion, the two actors sometimes appear in the same
film. Examples include "Ashes of Time," "He Ain't Heavy, He's My
Father," "The Eagle Shooting Heroes," and "Always be the Winners."
I think Tony Leung Kai-fei has been in more films (but don't quote me on
that) and has a zany persona (with a falsetto voice to match) in
comedies. I like Tony Leung Chiu-wai better in dramas; he's got such a
killer stare.
As far as I know, Tony Leung Chiu-wai is not gay. His long-time
girlfriend is actress Carina Lau, who plays his wife in "Ashes of Time,"
although the two don't have a scene together. (In "He Ain't Heavy, He's
My Father," Tony Leung Kai-fei plays the father, Carina Lau plays the
mother and Tony Leung Chiu-wai plays the son.)
I hope I have added to the confusion.

I went expecting to be howling all over the place. But I just thought it
was gross. Some funny situations. I guess I just didn't get it. Maybe I
was in a bad mood when I saw it. I wouldn't recommend it.

This sounds somewhat strange to me. I have to watch the credits to
get a better understanding? Now sometimes the credits are funny
("No dinosaurs were harmed during the making of the film" - The
Flintstones), but I wouldn't say they contribute anything to the
understanding. So here they do? First thought is: What kinda film is
that when it has to use the credits to explain the story. But I haven't
seen it and so when I get a chance I will.
> But after that it gets so predictable...I mean ...once you've figured

Hmmh, yeah twists are bad. I must admit that even through The
Game I sat there thinking: Chill Dougie, all's well that ends well. And
there is no way you could tell from the plot. But twists are often the
most unlikely ones and they can be predicted. If everything speaks
against it, then this is the most likely one in twisted movies.
The only twist that I could not foresee was that in The Sting, but then
again I was 12 when I saw it (just turned 13 - okay maybe not).

I saw Something about Mary for the second time and this time the
theatre was almost empty. It was not as funny as before and I think
that it is because it is a movie best viewed with a packed house.
There is something about the shared experience that really enhances
the movie (and others).

Ha! You obviously haven't seen Alien 3 then - where you have to watch the
opening credits for some 'reasons' why there is suddenly an alien aboard the
Sulacco and Hicks and Newt are killed - but you are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! It's a
sucky director who needs to explain things outside of the films boundaries!

Interesting.......I find most Hollywood films totally predictable =
but most of the twists in this I did not predict. Out of =

in? Don't tell me the twists! just titles in case I have not seen some =
of them.~

Two-time Emmy winner E.G. Marshall, who reprised his
starring role as lawyer Lawrence Preston in a Showtime
version of "The Defenders" just last season, died Monday
night at his home in suburban Mount Kisco NY. He was 84.
Marshall won two Emmys (1962 and 1963) for his portrayal of
the father in a father-and-son law firm in "The Defenders,"
a popular CBS-TV courtroom drama that ran from 1961 to 1965.
The actor's movie credits include "The Caine Mutiny,"
"Twelve Angry Men" and "Compulsion," while "The Iceman
Cometh" and "The Crucible" were two of his many Broadway
successes.

"Titanic" heartthrob Leonardo DiCaprio has decided not to
take on the role of a demented serial killer in "American
Psycho," long-rumored to be his next film. According to the
Los Angeles Times, the 23-year-old actor would have received
$20 million for the role, but apparently he and Lion's Gate
Films couldn't coordinate a start date that worked for them
both. In January DiCaprio is scheduled to start "The Beach,"
a film about hippies who migrate to a Southeast Asia island.

Denzel Washington's and Bruce Willis' latest film, "The
Siege," doesn't open until Nov. 6, but Arab and Muslim
groups are already seething about it. New York's Daily News
reports that The Council on American-Islamic Relations and
the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee are
scheduled to hold a press conference today to voice concerns
about the 20th Century-Fox film. The story-line involves
armed forces having to defend Brooklyn against Arab and
Muslim bombers. Earlier in the project director, the News
says, Edward Zwick and producer Lynda Obst capitulated to
some suggested changes in the script, but they said the
basic plot would remain.

Janet Leigh (mom of Jamie Leigh, with whom she currently
appears in "H20") has been the object of two of the most
violent murder scenes ever filmed -- first in Orson Welles'
"Touch of Evil" (1958) and then, two years later, in Alfred
Hitchcock's "Psycho." It's the "Psycho" scene in the Bates
Motel where she is stabbed in the shower that is forever
etched in filmgoers' minds. Ms. Leigh tells Interview
magazine she thinks the impact of the "Psycho" scene stems
from the fact that audiences don't actually see the
stabbing. They only think they do. "You could swear on a
stack of bibles that you actually did see it," she says. "A
master like Hitchcock ... could manipulate audiences with
camera angles and with the editing, so people believed they
were seeing all kinds of things."

Offbeat and independent films will grab center stage at this year's
Toronto International Film Festival, with Hollywood movies taking a
supporting role compared to last year. Unveiling a lineup of 311
films from 53 countries Tuesday, organizers said the festival will
feature more independent and first time directors compared with the
higher share of Hollywood studio films among 1997's 281 entries. The
focus on less mainstream cinema is expected to ensure the 23rd
installment of the festival sees its share of controversy.
"Happiness," a story about stalking and pedophilia directed by
American film-maker Todd Solondz, and "Sombre," by French director
Philippe Grandrieux, are both North American premieres expected to
stir controversy.
