Hate to burst your bubble, but this is an urban myth that's been around at
least since the 70s. Variations on the story have the black man as Lionel
Richie or Richard Pryor (obviously, an older version of the story), and often
instead of a bodyguard the black man has a huge dog with him -- instead of
saying "Hit the floor," the man says, "Sit" to the dog, and the woman thinks
she's talking to him.
There's a mythology professor from, I believe, the University of Utah named
Jan Brunvald who's written a bunch of books on the subject. They're great
reading!

I asked myself that very same question then realized it is from one of
the Simpsons Halloween specials, when Homer goes into a weird shop to buy
Bart a birthday present and gets him the Killer Krusty doll. The
shopkeeper tells homer how everything in the shop is cursed but he will
get a free Frogurt, Homer says "woohoo" and the shopkeeper says " the
frogurt is also cursed
So what do I win? :)

I like your description of Platoon, and have to agree with you- Platoon
and Saving Private Ryan do have the same effect, although I would have to
say that Saving Private Ryan has more of one. My judgement is slightly
skewed, however, because I have only seen Platoon on video. I wasn't old
enough to see it in theaters when it first came out.

Megan-
My question to you is what kind of movies do you want to see? (I might be
missing something here, but I believe you just asked for suggestions.) Do
you want popular/blockbuster movies, art films, what time line are you
looking for, etc. Tonya's suggestions are fairly pop-culture (there's
nothing wrong with that.) If you want something out in theaters now, you
should check out Saving Private Ryan because it won't be the same on home
video (here's a no-brain generalization: it doesn't make a difference if
you watch an art film on home video because you lose that much due to the
lack of special effects.) I haven't been to see Armageddon yet, but it
sounds like one that is probably best in the theater.
My suggestion for video rentals are the New Jersey trilogy- Clerks,
Mallrats, and Chasing Amy (and watch them in that order else you won't
get all the references, which are a good portion of the humor.)

If you wondered where everyone was this weekend - they were at the
movies. Early estimates of the weekend box office show the top three
movies brought in more than $16 million each in ticket sales. But
despite the competition from a pair of openers, Steven Spielberg's
"Saving Private Ryan" retained its top spot on the box-office chart
for the third straight week. The film brought in an estimated $17.6
million, raising its 17-day take to $104 million. Coming in second
was the new thriller "Snake Eyes," which earned $16.5 million,
followed by fright-sequel "Halloween: H20," which earned $16 million.
Rounding out the top five were "There's Something About Mary" and
"The Parent Trap."

In news related to "There's Something About Mary," Bobby
Farrelly, who teamed with brother Peter to make the movie,
said the zipper scene is based on an unfortunate incident
that happened to a friend in about the eighth grade when the
brothers were hosting a party. "One of the kids at the party
went up into the bathroom and just tangled up his manhood to
no end," Bobby told the Chicago Tribune. "After about an
hour of struggling with it, my parents -- my father's a
doctor, my mother's a nurse -- they had to go in and free
willy, if you will."

Could've been a better movie.
But, considering the mood I was in, a very bad one, it worked. Helped me work
through some very aggressive, angry feelings. Left me exploring the validity
of claims that horror movies inspire violence.
Scares? Not really. There was plenty of the, been there and done that, feel
but no real scares. A few startles was more like it.
Jamie Lee Curtis tries real hard with what she is given but that really is not
enough. Her character seems to have been given the dregs of what could have
been deeply complex motivation.
The rest of the characters, as well as the plot, are much the same. Thinly
drawn with not nearly enough depth. A chance remark alluding to one
character's potential to become another Norman Bates leads to intriguing
possibilities for future sequels but that is pretty much it.
It rather typically breaks down to body count as well as what will or will not
stop Michael Myers this go round.

No I wouldn't say that at all, I expect a movie to entertain me. Period.
There are no rule books that say a movie has to have a plot, in fact some
of moviedoms most succesful films have had no plot to speak of( I won't

Allen, Cameron)

At the time they first came out they may have had those qualities but as
the years passed the glow fell off them. Only the first 6 episodes of LIS
could be considered classic as the focus shifted from scifi to camp after
that. You might not have seen the LIS original with the attack of the
giant carrot or as if you did you wouldn't claim it had charm. The movie
was very true to those original 6 eps and I can't wait for the sequel (
to both films as there is no doubt about a godzilla 2 and probably 3
especially after the record breaking opening day in Japan)

I suppose it might be called differently in other countries but basically
it is where we get behind a struggling person in their chosen field but
once they achieve superstardom all we want is to drag them down. Look at
Bill Gates, I remember when he was a struggling computer geek and we all
cheered when he made his first million ( and he was only about 20 years
old) but now that he is on top everyone seems to blame him for the
problems with the world. Richard Branson, Sylvester Stallone, Bill
Clinton have all suffered the same treatment over the years. Quite
possibly in 10 years time we might be cursing the ground Marc Andreeson (
of Netscape fame) walks on but right now he is everyones hero because he
dares to take on the giants.
I think it all goes back to David and Goliath and how we instinctively
support the underdog against the giant, but once the underdog wins, the
support is withdrawn and the attacks begin.
I'm not sure what the source of Tall Poppy is but maybe it has something
to do with lopping the tops off tall plants in the garden to keep them
growing at a level pace.

Godzilla may have broken records on opening day in Japan but that was
strictly based on curiosity. The movie is a big, fat bomb there.
Sequel to Either? Hmmm. Perhaps there will be sequels but I'm sure
that they would be as a result of prior commitments and not
satisfaction with the original films.
I would love to see how you bring back Dr. Smith (but temper his
evil) since he was always a critical part of the series. And I think
Camp is what made the original LIS series memorable.
For a sequel to Godzilla they just ignore the iguana and bring back
the original DINOSAUR.
