Uuuh, getting personal here?
Alright, so let's throw in some weight. I think whether you like or dislike the film
is based very much on your starting point. If you love Shakespeare you'll
probably dislike the film. All language is drowned by this overkill of fancy
pictures and sounds - granted. However, if you don't know Shakespeare but
think he might be a cool dude, this one is a good starting point from which to
get to know him. I guess more kids have seen this one than any other recent
Shakespeare adaptation. And this film has probably done more good for
appreciating (or learning that there was a dude called) Shakespeare than all
English teachers put together.

I'll back you up on this one, Tonya. The acting in this movie certainly
was not, in any way, horrible. I believe a person may be able to find
fault with the idea of putting a modern re-write on a classic play, but
this has been done for years to Shakespeare plays on stage. Why not in the
movies?? To bring a wonderful story to modern life, while keeping the
lyrical verse intact, to me was a welcome departure from all the mindless
action movies that seemed to be coming and going and coming and going and
coming and going at the time. And I would not consider myself, in any way,
a Leonardo groupy.

Jet Li(whose chinese name is Lianjie Li) is very famous for his martial arts
in China. It is the first time he will portray a bad guy in a film.He is
very glad to have the oppertunity to cooperate with Mel.I love his movies
such as Brave Heart,Ransom.Do you know more films starring Mel?
Of all the films you suggest me to buy,I just find the Abyss,Terminater 1&2.
There are Airforce One,Independent Day,Top Secret,Six Days and Seven
Nights,Aliens 4,Rats(I am not sure about the name,it tells that some Rats
became really big and threatened the mankind),The Fly 2. Which should I buy?
Thanks

Mel was very good in ''The year of Living Dangerously'' (with Segourny
Weaver)
directed by Peter Weir, which is by far,
I think, Mel's best movie.
Other of his movies I like includes ''The river'' (with Sissy Spacek) and
''Mrs Soffel ''
(with Diane Keaton).

Get Terminator 2. No doubt about it. The special effects in that movie is simply
fabulous! Err... about the others, I can't really comment. I don't like some of
them. I'm not too much into the action genre anymore. Moving into the drama and
thriller shows. :)
And from Leo Castillo's list:
The Year of Living Dangerously <-- didn't watch.
The River <-- didn't watch.
Conspiracy Theory <-- didn't watch either. :)
Maverick <-- funny show, not too bad but it's one of those shows you need only
watch once.
Air America <-- nope, didn't watch.
Hamlet <-- didn't watch but heard that it's good, albeit a bit dry at times.
Bird on a Wire <-- heard that this one is good too. :)
Tequila Sunrise <-- don't know.
I would recommend Forever Young. That's because I'm not really into action. ;)
It's a lovey, dovey story. And get this one too: The Man Without A Face - a VERY
emotional show. Love it.
I quite like Braveheart too. It's a long show. 3 hours or thereabouts. But I
noticed that long shows TEND to be good. E.g. Titanic, Dances With Wolves....
any other long movies that you out there think it's good?

Actor Michael Douglas says he has decided to give up his role in
Jonathan Mostow's upcoming submarine action film "U-571." His
departure from the movie was occasioned by "scheduling differences
after the film was pushed back too far for my comfort," Douglas said.
He added that his withdrawal opens up his schedule for "several
possibilities," including a "Romancing the Stone" sequel, which he
said was "about two weeks away from delivery of a new script." See

I'd just like to point out that there were quite mixed reviews on this
movie and I'm planning to see it sometime nxt week.
However, for the rave reviews that this movie received falls short when
you realize it made only a disappointing 30-34 million dollars this
weekend. Even Titanic 2-3 months after it came out was making at least 30
million, maybe tides will turn.

Subject: Re: [MV] finally back home
Hi Guys,
I'm finally home after too long on the road and I am absolutley
exhausted. My mailbox is just too full for me to read even half.
But anyway...
Out of Sight is absolutely fabulous (to borrow a phrase). Steven
Soderbergh manages to make a fresh and stylistic film in a genre that
has been abused by wannabees trying to make another Pulp Fiction. The
important thing to remember is that Pulp Fiction did not invent this
genre but instead revived it. Out of Sight owes nothing to that film
except the thanks for the opportunity to be made. It is funny,
exciting, sexy and very well done all the way around. Everybody does
a great job in their role and just when you thought you saw the last
fun cameo there comes another. I think George Clooney will become a
movie star out of this and Soderbergh's Directing career will get a
needed boost. There is a guy that plays a stoned loser in the film
that steals every scene he is in. I can't think of his name but
think he's going to get some big offers out of this as well.
Armageddon is one weird movie. It's as if Michael Bay has invented
a new form of filmmaking in which no attempt is made to include human
drama. He has never met a camera he didn't move. While I was
watching I found myself flipping back and forth over what each scene
belongs in. Some looked like AT&T commercials and others looked as
if they were shot as part of an extended trailer. I don't think that
movies are necessarily worse than in the past but they are starting to
give huge budgets to people that can't seem to make even passable
flicks. Of the two previous Bay films, I hated Bad Boys and really
liked The Rock. He desperately needs somebody looking over his
shoulder. BTW, I heard yesterday that the big scenes of distruction
were included at the last minute and were never part of the original
film. They were the only parts that I liked!!!!
Any Verhoeven fans should make sure they see his pre hollywood films.
Spetters, The Fourth MAn and Soldier Orange are all very, very good
films and show him for the artist that he really is. There is
another called "Flesh and Blood" I think and it was unbearable for
me. It starred Rutger Hauer (who's also in Soldier of Orange).
Since he arrived here he has slowly been sucked into the machine but
I think he has plenty of exciting work to come.
Hope all of you are OK. bye,
bb

The Bruce Willis action picture "Armageddon" brought in an
estimated $34.8 million this July 4th weekend, far more than
the $19.8 million by last week's No. 1 (and this week's No.
2), Eddie Murphy's "Dr. Dolittle." Rounding out the top five
box office draws over the holiday weekend were "Mulan," "Out
of Sight" and "The X-Files Movie." "Armageddon"'s ticket
sales were considered less than Earth-shattering,
considering its $160 million budget. In its first five days
the film brought in $52.9 million, which is just below the
total brought in by this summer's other top action flick,
"Godzilla", which opened with $55.5 million over the
four-day Memorial Day weekend yet proved to be a
disappointment in the long haul.

Name a bad TV series or a film that was a monumental flop
over the last 10 years and George Clooney thinks he may have
been in it. "Yeah, I've done some really bad television over
the years, bad movies too," he said candidly but without
regret during an interview with a group of Hollywood
reporters. "If you're an actor and you're working at all,
that counts for something, because the truth is you're still
making a living as an actor, and 95% of the people in the
[Screen Actors' Guild] don't do that." Besides starring (for
his final year) in NBC's top-rated "ER," Clooney is also in
the current Elmo Leonard movie thriller "Out of Sight."
Critics love it, while audiences are dwindling. Last
weekend, in the movie's second week, "Out of Sight" took in
$6.6 million, only half of what it made the previous week.

John Travolta and his wife, Kelly Preston -- set to work for

upcoming movie "The Shipping News," based on novelist E.
Annie Proulx's Pulitzer Prize-winning best-seller, reports
Variety. John will play a widowed New Yorker who relocates
to a small, Newfoundland fishing village with his two
daughters and aunt. There he takes a job with a local paper,
writing -- among other things -- the shipping news. Preston
will play the love interest for Travolta's character, a role
that had been considered for Nicole Kidman (Mrs. Tom
Cruise).

Alicia Silverstone, best known as the original Cher Horwitz
in the movie "Clueless," is set to star in the upcoming TV

most notorious murderer as he awaits his highly publicized
execution. Her 15 minutes of fame fizzles when her husband
is found innocent and released after the real killer

No, not really. I was making a point about the movie, and suggesting that
Tonya might have felt a certain way towards the lead actor. She cleared
that up, and I was not attempting to insult her. I - in fact - stated that
everyone has their opinion. But to further clarify my point, I do believe
that the acting was uninteresting and unexciting. And in some scenes it
was pure overacting.
A classic story, like R&J, needs to offer characters that audiences can
either identify with or want to be like. I felt that R&J accomplished
neither. Teaching kids that Shakespeare was "a cool dude" through this is
insulting. Besides the name, and plot (boy and girl in love but can't be
together), this version has nothing to do with Shakespeare.
IMHO, I feel that this version of R&J was one of the worst ever, and that
the goal was to simply sell soundtracks. I didn't think there were any
redeeming qualities whatsoever.

If this is true, then God help us all, because those types of people will
soon grow up and be running the world, taking care of the sick, and
watching MTV all day.

Tham,
Crimson Tide is a good movie. I felt that the acting was pretty good, and
tense in the right areas. The only thing I didn't like about the movie was
in real life and real battle, this scene would never have occurred. It's
another example of Hollywood being liberal and saying that peace wins out.
Could you imagine a "Top Gun" today? It wouldn't be made. Unless it was
the Iraqians or something, but that movie is called "Iron Eagle."
So I watched Crimson Tide with the conflict in terms of Old school vs. New
school, and their ensuing power struggle. I didn't watch it as good,
peacful young guy winning over naval experienced, commander.
As far as DVD, (no offense) HELL NO I won't go! DVD offers compressions
rate worse than that of some CDs, and the next few years will offer
incompatible versions as DVD, DVD2, DVDRW, DVDROM, and more come out. The
CD quality sound on LaserDiscs are more pure to the ear than the flat
12-bit encoding on DVD discs (at least for now). DVDs are mearly a
consumer good. Sony failed at the MiniDisc so it must try with DVD. IF
you look carefully, while studios are releasing "director's cut" DVD
movies, major directors are releasing personally approved "special
editions" with added features, background interviews, and more on LD first
(and sometimes ONLY on LD).
DVD offers no gains over LDs in the technical sense, or in my personal
views. WideScreen Review magazine has a great article sometime last year
on why LDs are still better. It's a good read.
Good luck watching and have fun!
