Rap (aka Hip Hop) is a form of black music that started in the late 70s. =
It's not=20
really singing but rather a fast rhythmic speech to music with a heavy ba=
ss=20
line. It springs form the black ghettos and thus there still is a link to=
crime -=20
especially drugs. I never heard of Russel Jones but the life expectancy o=
f rap=20
artists is in general not very high. The Notorious B.I.G. was shot last y=
ear (or=20
something) and whats-his-name-again before. Rap used to be highly innovat=
ive=20
and sometimes political (Grandmaster Flash, Run DMC, Public Enemy,=20
Salt'N'Peppa, Arrested Development, De La Soul, Ice-T) but lately it's la=
rgely=20
more about stealing from other songs (sampling), using offensive language=
and=20
making videos that are really soft-porns. It is a bit more divers than I =
portrayed=20
it, but you get the idea. But it is certainly worth checking the music ou=
t as it is=20
highly popular and there are still some good bands around. I'd say to=20
understand popular western culture it is quite essential to know about it=
- it has=20
founded a whole new type of music and white folks have taken it up. And m=
any=20
non-English speaking countries have their own rap-scene in their native=20
language. So you have the one in a lifetime chance to become the first ar=

rapping in Cantonese. If you have a soundcard on your computer - I am sur=
e=20
there are rap-sites with tons of audiofiles. I guess it is a kind of musi=
c that is=20
not yet known in China. But since our void and mindless western culture i=
s=20
penetrating even the most resistant and remotest parts of the world, I am=
sure=20
it will come to China eventually. If you are familiar with our films, the=
n you will=20
certainly have come across some rap music.
Before any of you other people in western countries flame me for being an=

to someone who is not familiar with the music. Send all flames to=20

Michael Verhoeven also did Basic Instinct and Show Girls (a really bad on=

ARMAGEDDON
approx: 2 hours and 20 minutes running time
This is THE movie to see! Forget everything I've said about any other movie.
While the movies that I liked were good, ARMAGEDDON is going to hit them like
the end of their world. Baby! This movie is hotter than hot and slicker than
crude oil!
By the end of this picture, you are going to love every cast member like you
love your best friend. These actors, every single damn one of them, play
their roles as if born to them. Afraid that this is another Bruce Willis,
floppo stinko? Hoping that if you are lucky, it might, might, be at least as
good as, say, Die Hard? The only smell coming from this picture is that of
success and it reeks of it! Now Die Hard, I liked, ARMAGEDDON, I do believe,
gave me heart palpitations. True love,
The music and sound fx alone, played magnificently by the Kerasotes,
http://www.kerasotes.com , SHOWPLACE 16 sound system, are reason enough to see
this one, If you can see it in one of these amazing theaters , do it and do
it now. These theaters are brilliantly designed, high-tech, but with at home
comfort that helps to place you right smack in the movie as an unseen extra,
The folks running the one in South Bend should be proud. They were extremely
helpful and friendly.
The general plot itself seems to be the buzz plot of the season. Total
annihilation of Earth and all who live upon her. Basically, we're going to
get hit with a damn big rock, One the size of Texas.
While everyone is rushing about, madly trying to save the world, we are
treated to scenes of mass destruction wrought by meteor showers. We also get
treated to the comedy of a group of rough and ready oil roughnecks with a
heart of gold. Turns out that these raw, masculine guys just happened to help
their boss raise his little girl and she has turned into a strong hearted
woman. Amazingly enough, the US government eventually happen to come upon a
plan to save us all that needs guys who know drilling and therein begins the
rest of the story.
This movie never lets up. Hurled from scene to scene, you do not even get to
draw a breath without first being pummeled with action, humor, or pathos. You
seem there. An actual participant in events.
ARMAGEDDON is the STAR WARS of the Summer of 98.

I remember seeing the Abyss at the movie theater. All though I liked it, I
thought the ending ruined the whole movie (so corny it was almost
laughable). It wasn't until I saw the uncut edition on TV that I
understood what Camaron was trying to accomplish with his ending. Why they
decided to chop the wonderful ending of this movie up is beyond me. The
whole movie made so much more sense with the uncut version. I would love
to see this movie re-released to theaters with the uncut ending. A
beautiful film in every other way, this would allow me to view it they way
it should have been viewed in the first place!

How about telling us how it *really* is supposed to end. I thought the
ending was corny too, until I gave it deeper thought, because no one in
their right mind would have chosen its surface meaning. We are talking
about what he says, right?

Armageddon (PG-13) ***
For all the talk about their shared "the sky is falling" theme,
_Armageddon_, about an asteroid on a collision course with Earth, can best
be described as the opposite side of a coin shared by its counterpart, the
serious falling comet tale _Deep_Impact_. That said, on its own, unique
terms, the slam-bang _Armageddon_ is a reasonably satisfying summer
blockbuster, with all the flaws and virtues that come with that label.
In addition to the "end of the world" theme, _Armageddon_ and
_Deep_Impact_ do have another thing in common: successfully overcoming a
setup that borders on the ridiculous. After a group of top government and
scientific advisors determine that the only way to possibly prevent (yes)
armageddon is to detonate a nuclear bomb inside the asteroid, NASA
executive director Truman (Billy Bob Thornton) recruits expert deep-core
driller Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis, inexplicably speaking in a wildly
inconsistent drawl) and his crew to do the job. Of course, these drillers
aren't astronauts, which means a slow-going hour-long passage in which the
roughnecks undergo extensive training and evaluation for their outer space
mission. A lot of what goes on, including psychological and physical exams
and a side trip to a strip club, is supposed to be funny. But with the
exception of a couple of one-liners dryly delivered by the
always-entertaining Steve Buscemi (as horny geologist Rockhound), the
comedy is merely tedious--just as tedious, in fact, as the setup of
_Deep_Impact_, but in a different way, ineptly aiming for cheap laughs as
opposed to earnestly setting up hokey, all-too-familiar disaster epic plot
threads.
_Armageddon_'s light touch is just one in its long line of differences
from its more grave counterpart. While _Deep_Impact_ was a dramatic
treatment of a doomsday scenario, _Armageddon_ takes a gung-ho,
action-oriented approach. Director Michael Bay (who appears fleetingly as
a NASA technician) wastes no time putting the special effects dollars to
work; before he hits the basic training lull, Bay treats the audience to a
curtain-raising space shuttle explosion and a spectacular meteor shower in
New York City. With this different angle comes a pivotal change of
perspective, focusing on the outer space rescue mission as opposed to
_Impact_'s cross-section of Earth dwellers. So, in essence, it can be said
that _Armageddon_, with its scrappy crew doing their best to "fight the
future," is a film about living, not dying, the ominous inevitability of
which was the Earth-centered _Impact_'s main issue.
Ultimately, the difference between _Armageddon_ and _Deep_Impact_ can be
boiled down to a fundamental one: male and female. As
_Entertainment_Weekly_'s Lisa Schwarzbaum observed in her review, the
touchy-feely _Deep_Impact_ was a "woman's action movie"; _Armageddon_, from
notoriously testosterone-heavy producer Jerry Bruckheimer, is clearly one
for the guys. In addition to all the full-throttle spectacle,
_Armageddon_, like all Bruckheimer films, barely has enough time for the
onscreen females. Liv Tyler is prominently featured in the marketing
campaign, but her slim role is merely an amalgam of two cardboard female
stereotypes: rebellious daughter (to Harry) and devoted girlfriend (to
driller A.J. Frost, played by Ben Affleck). There is one female on the
space crew, ballbusting co-pilot Watts (Jessica Steen), but, in typical
Bruckheimer fashion, she's literally shoved out of the way at a critical
moment.
So when _Armageddon_ picks up steam with the shuttle launch at about the
one-hour mark, it is momentum of the hard-driving, Hollywood action sort
that takes over, not the subtle, surprising poignance that _Deep_Impact_
eventually took on. Bay, as shown in his previous two films (also
Bruckheimer productions), _Bad_Boys_ and _The_Rock_, is a crack action
director, and he successfully generates tension and excitement from
otherwise been-there, done-that situations such as the last-second
disarming of a ticking bomb (complete with, as Roger Ebert terms them, an
"RDR"--red digital display) and a narrow escape from an exploding complex.
All of the mayhem comes bathed in Bay's trademark, music-video-honed visual
razzle dazzle, heavy on the quick cuts and slow-mo moments, which keeps the
proceedings interesting.
_Armageddon_ is a sturdy popcorn extravaganza; if only Bay and the writing
crew of Jonathan Hensleigh, J.J. Abrams, Robert Roy Pool, Jonathan
Hensleigh, Tony Gilroy, and Shane Salerno were content to keep it that way.
But, seeing they were telling a larger-than-life story (and perhaps swayed
by the estrogen of producer Gale Anne Hurd), they decided to go for
emotional content to match, with smaller-than-life results. While there is
nothing here nearly as embarrassing as the laughably dreary "How Do I
Live?"-scored reunion between Nicolas Cage and family in _Con_Air_, the
general lack of subtlety in _Armageddon_ (and, for that matter, other
Bruckheimer productions) prevent the conclusion, which is to supposed to be
a profoundly moving, from completely convincing; the "human drama" comes
off every bit as calculated as the effects.
Although two films are quite different, in the end the question will
always be "Is _Armageddon_ better than _Deep_Impact_?" For me, it's pretty
much a draw, but one that can be decided depending on what it is one wants
to see. If it's drama, _Deep_Impact_; if it's action, _Armageddon_. I'd
venture to guess that it's the latter quality most moviegoers would go for,
and, consequently, the box office answer to the question would be an
emphatic yes.
IN BRIEF
Out of Sight (R) *** 1/2
Chemistry between romantic leads can make or break a film, and never in
recent memory has it more "made" a film than in Steven Soderbergh's witty,
slick, sexy adaptation of Elmore Leonard's novel. _Out_of_Sight_ jumps
back and forth in time to tell the twisting tale of suave bank robber Jack
Foley (George Clooney, rebounding well after his disastrous turn as the
Caped Crusader), out to make one big score after escaping from prison; hot
on his trail--and hot _for_ him--is tough U.S. Marshal Karen Sisco (the
ever-sultry Jennifer Lopez), who falls hard for Jack's charms after being
briefly locked in a trunk with him during his prison break.
Although _Out_of_Sight_'s intricately structured plot requires the
audience's undivided attention, Soderbergh and screenwriter Scott Frank
(who also adapted Leonard's _Get_Shorty_) are less concerned with story
than they are dialogue and the quirky characters that deliver it, and the
film offers a wide array of memorable personalities, such as Jack's
collaborators in the planned big heist: stoner Glenn (Steve Zahn); the
menacing Maurice, a.k.a. Snoopy (Don Cheadle); his clumsy bodyguard White
Boy Bob (Keith Loneker); and Jack's partner Buddy (Ving Rhames). Most
memorable of all, though, is the central duo of Jack and Karen, who are
both acutely aware of the danger of their mutual attraction yet are
completely powerless to resist the thrill. The impossibly glamorous and
charismatic pair of Clooney and Lopez absolutely sizzle from their first
moment together; the soulful, smoldering gazes they lay upon each other are
sexier than any explicit scene could ever be. It is their effortless
rapport that carries the film and jumpstarts its sometimes-flagging energy.

There are so many good movies out there to pick from and everyone is going
to have a different opinion. I know most people won't agree with me about
my FAVORITE movie pick, because a lot of people hated it. My pick is Romeo
and Juliet (the newest version). I loved it, the words are so beautiful,
and romantic. The actors were picked so well. Claire Danes was such a good
Juliet. The way she can use her talent to bring out all the emotions to do
the role justice was so brilliant and impressive. Leonardo DiCaprio
captured to stero-type Romeo. Gorgeous, sincere, and poetically correct. He
fit the part well too. There are many actors that would have made a good
Romeo, but he made a great one. The soundtracks were brillant too. The
music was so beautiful, it was hip and current, it fit the movie very well
by not being old-age-type, since the new version was made to be an update
to the original classic. I could go on and on about this wonderful,
beautiful movie, but I shall now suggest a couple other movies on a more
low-key manner.
Other suggests:
Set It Off
Fear
Gattaca
Mallrats ( I know this on is bizarre to like, but it is a total
laugh-fest!)
Psycho (hey it's a all-time classic)
What's Eating Gilbert Grape
Inventing the Abbotts
(I'll think of more later)

Subject: [MV] Deep Impact vs Armageddon
Which is better? I saw DeepI. and I think I'm about to see Arm. this
weekend. These 2 movies seems have the same story line.
rock coming to earth.
send some people up to the rock, and drill a bomb.
try to blow it up but fails.
some part of the rock hits the earth.
....end.
can someone explain the difference in these 2 movies?

First to Chris:
I'm glad you got to see the uncut version (albeit interrupted by
commercials). It makes for a totally different film. When Cameron
released it, he wasn't given the go-ahead for a three hour movie (in fact
it wasn't until Titanic that he got THAT green light) so in order to cut
back on the length of the movie, Fox forced the cut to under 2.5 hours.
The result was the cutting of the whole sub-plot of the being on the ocean
floor, and how we exist because they like us and they had "a one way trip."
In addition, much of the friendship plot was cut too. In the uncut
version there is more interaction between the characters (when they begin
towing the rig, the group beings singing) that makes them more personable.
Thankfully I bought the special edition, but it would be great to see it
rereleased in theaters, with Dolby Surround or SDDS!!
Now to Anita:
The plot: **CAUTION SPOLIERS**
It's not only how the movie ends that makes it special, it is the addition
throughout the entire film that makes it special. During the movie, there
are small editions of interactions between the crew as they watch the
SUB-PLOT that is not even in the film. As the U.S. and Russia near blow
about nuclear threats, there are a number of newscasts that detail buildup
of nuclear weapons off the coast of Florida, wrecks between US and Russia
cruisers, news interviews with americans about the coming of the end, and
more!
As the movie progresses, background information is learned about all their
relationships that help us understand the characters better. When Bud
saves the day and is rescued by the NTI, the conversation between takes on
a whole other meaning. When they are showing him scenes from TV he begins
to understand that they have been here a while and they are beginning to
get tired and scared that we are an increasingly violent society. There
are a number of "timeless" horror images (like nuclear explosions, the
point blank killing in Nam) to convey this image. At this point, the NTIs
being to raise HUGE tidal waves all over the globe!!! The special effects
(for 1989) are incredible and are still great today. Think of the tidal
waves from Deep Impact EXCEPT they stop before crushing the land all over
the globe. So the entire populace (who have been trying to escape nuclear
destruction and water death for a while) are watching these 2 mile high
waves just look at them. Then Bud converses with the NTIs and realizes
that they are here for good and they don't want us to kill each other.
(The "I love you Wife" and "Knew this was a one way trip" mean more here)
Right before he returns to the surface, he sends a message to the rig crew.
As we watch the waves fall back into the ocean, we realize the NTIs power,
but also their kindness for not wiping our sorry asses off the planet!
Then Bud sends a message back to the crew on the rig, not contained in the
normal edition, and that was "They sent you a message, hope you got it."
This sub crashing was a great backstory to the message of potential
destruction and the world coming together to save itself. Trouble is, Fox
focused on the sub plot (no pun intended) and removed the message - which I
think - was the movie! It predated this whole "world save itself" plot
line (seen in ID4, Deep Impact, Armaggedon, and numerous other films) by
years.
So I hope that helps answer your questions.
Cheers,
