Gee Masako, I wish I knew what was playing over there so I could give
a suggestion. The Truman Show is probably going to be in Japan very
soon. It is being called the most touching film in quite a while.
We have been berating Hollywood for quite a while for recycling
storylines. While I problably complain as much as anybody the bottom
line is how well the story is told. NObody complains about Edward
Scissorhands or Star Wars or any of the other well made movies that
retell a familiar story. I don't think the problem is recycling
stories but instead recycling stories badly. How many Hamlets have
we had in the past 5 years? And now I hear there is another one
coming.

There is another Hamlet? Seems like the book shops near the
production offices don't stock any other Shakespeare plays. There are
a number of great plays that haven't been dealt with lately, but I
guess actors want to hold a skull and act like mad.
I think it *is* about the large amount of remakes and about making
similar films. There are two meteor films now? 2 about volcanos
recently? 3 about giant Lizards? I am kinda missing plot films
lately. I have neither seen the predecessor of SW nor Edward, but I
presume they are rather adaptions than remakes which would be ok by
me. But if you make a remake it should be better or present a new
view, something that Godzilla presumably doesn't do. Another thing is
that Tim Burton and George Lucas are good directors, while the most
recent remakes are often more based on getting cash rather than
making a decent film. Neither Lucas nor Burton had big money in mind
and that's probably why they got it. Both were quite courageous
making those films, which seems to me to be the difference between
them and the most recent films.
