One film (from France) which really blew me away was "The City of Lost
Children" (aka 'La Ville des Enfants Perdues') It's set in a very Kafkaesque
Post Apocolyptic City and the direction is a lot like that of Terry Gilliam
(Brazil & 12 Monkeys). It's about a mad scientist who is unable to dream and
so kidnaps children from the city and steals their dreams with the help of his
clone henchman. It's an amazing spectacle and a fantastical sci-fi tale.
It was produced and directed by the makers of "Delicatessen" which is another
gem, although it's about cannibalism in a small French village which has no
other source of food nor nutrition.
City of Lost Children is available with subtitles, and also with a suprisingly
good dubbed version as well!

I saw "City of Angels" a few weeks ago and it is one of the best
movies I have seen in along time. I also saw "Godzilla" and "Fear and

is "City of Angels"...I liked it a lot and Meg Ryan and Nicholas Cage
were excellent!!! This movie actually had a story line and held my

Hi,
i watched this movie a few weeks ago and i really like this movie. especially
because of meg ryan, one of my favorite actors. and nicholas cage is really
good. the best of the movie is the end. this was the right end that she died
because of the circumstances of the movie and the love.

One of my favorite movies is Fear, starring Reese Witherspoon and Mark
Wahlberg. I haven't heard any discussion about this movie. I know it
didn't have Oscar-potential, but not all good movies do. I thought it was a
very good movie. It kept my attention the whole way through. The ending
was a bit fake though. It is a total "teenager/other young peoples" movie,
because the stars of it are teenagers. It is about a relationship gone bad
because the girl picked the wrong guy. It had up-to-date features and
procedures! Any comments??
I recently saw The Birdcage. I thought that this movie dragged on. I
couldn't get into it. I am not saying that I totally hate it, but it was a
little less than I expected! Any thoughts to this one?
I also recently say 'Til There Was You. This was a sweet movie. It didn't
have any real huge stars, but was very romantic. It was interesting too.
Opinions??

I really enjoyed Fear. Which kind of surprised me, since I wasn't expecting
much. Both Reese Witherspoon & Mark Wahlberg did great jobs. I do have to
agree with you on the ending though -- it was a bit over the top.

Like I said in my reply to your Fear email, I liked Reese in fear. She
certainly has talent, but I'm not so sure about her choices of movies. After
seeing her in Freeway (possibly the worst film ever made) I'm surpised that
she is still able to get a job. I havn't seen her latest, Twilight, but I
have heard good things about it.

I LOVED the "Birdcage." I thought Nathan Lane was wonderful and he's
gotten to be one of my favorite actors to watch. When my mom and I went to
see this at the show, we couldn't stop laughing when Gene Hackman showed
up the way he did at the end!!!!

I just saw this movie this afternoon and I thought it was wonderful!! It
was a bit slow in a couple of places, but on the whole I really loved it.
The cinematography alone is enough to see this movie. I see a nomination
for the camer work. I heard that the story was very different in the movie
from the book. All I know is that I loved the movie and the way they used
the training of the horses as a metaphor for completion. It was extremely
profound!! I highly recommend it!!

I was very disappointed in this movie. Nathan Lane is a GREAT actor. He
is to Broadway what Robin Williams is to Hollywood. In addition, I laughed
at every scene in the previews (trailer, commercials, etc). I was this
close >< to going to see it in the theatre.
Unfortunately, when I did see the movie, the ONLY scenes that made me laugh
were the ones that were in the previews. What really hurt was that you had
two comic genuses working with brilliant material (this was basically a
remake of La Cage aux Folles. Hey didn't we just have a discussion of
this??:-), and there was just so much potential. And the thing literally
bombed.
At least that is my opinion.

Yes, I believe Christina Ricci could be the biggest star in Hollywood.
In fact she gets larger and larger with every film.
Please remember folks our original agreement to either not give away
spoilers or to at least give a very clear warning so that we don't
ruin the ending for others that haven't seen it.
While I enjoy the edgier films out there as much as the next person I
have come to more appreciate a filmmmaker's ability to tell a story in
a subtle manner. Sometimes new directors are so desperate to scream
"Look at me!" that they throw everything on screen without
understanding that everything on screen should serve a purpose to the
story. We are at a point where flashy crap is being spewed out by
video directors whose true talent is limited to the 3 minute Music
Video. It is much more difficult and challenging for everybody
(including the audience) to relay an emotion with the arch of an
eyebrow than to have a character throw a tantrum on screen. I find
the one team that is able to consistently use flashy camera
techniques in service to the story is the Coen Brothers. And with
Fargo they set all of that aside because they understood the stark
simple style of that movie served it best. The Unforgiven may not
have been some people's cup of tea but it contained more raw emotion
that Trainspotting could ever hope for. But there's a place for all
genres and styles. The important thing is how well the particular
film is done.

Finally, I can contribute!!!! I have been a subscriber to this post for
the last 7 months, have read everyone's thoughts and over-opinions on my
favorite subject in the world: MOVIES! I have known the answers to your
questions and wanted to stick up for the films and actors that I feel
have been misrepresented, On the other hand, I have wanted to thank so
many people for telling it like it is. But, having viewed all this from
the 'work' computer, I could not reply. But, now I have my own computer.
So, here I am! I hope that I can be a welcome addition to the "speaking
"post.
The first point of contention that I recently have had is the knocking
of Leonardo Dicapprio. I feel that he is being completely misrepresented
by his latest Hollywood releases (Titanic and Romeo&Juliet), one reader
stated that he is only good for the dying lover roles. I am proud to say
that I have completely respected Mr. Dicapprio from my first exposure to
him in 'This boys Life' which has absolutly nothing to do with that
genre. A brief list of his other roles, of which I find to be extremely
expansive of such a young actor, will show that he does not only fit
into such a 2 dimensional characterization. The above stated, 'This boys
Life', he played the author Tobias Wolfe, Of course there was the Oscar
nominated, 'What's eating Gilbert Grape' (mentally retarded Arnie
Grape), 'The Basketball Diaries' (performance artist Jim Carroll),
'Total Eclipse' (Arthur Rimbaud), 'Marvin's Room', and the recent
release of 'The Man in the Iron Mask'. Ifeel that even including Romeo
and Juliet, and Titanic that shows a very intelligent and versatile
career for such a young man. I do not know of any other young actor
(including River Phoenix) that has shown such promise and dedication to
the art of acting at such a young age. Hollywood will not be satisfied
until they turn this actor into another pre-pubescent pin up. But,
fortunately, as with now, the possibilty of forsaking that "here today
gone tomorrow" kind of mainstream success, by signing onto to the
'American Psycho' role, Dicapprio is showing us that he is in it for the
art of acting and not instant success that comes with taking the
meaningless safe roles that are only applauded by the editors of "Bop"
magazine.
I apologize for the speech. I have been saving up for awhile. i look
forward to contributing in the future, maybe you won't mind reading me
again.
- -Trav.
P.S.
someone a while ago talked of a movie starring Matt Dillon, in which
his gang commits a crime and gets stuck in a bar. that movie is called,
'Albino Alligator' directed by the great Kevin Spacey.
thanks.

First of all I agree on knowing the crafts and the Coens although I
would doubt that their intentions differ very much from those of the
Trainspotting team.
Trainspotting is a novel made into a film and that makes it different
from films without such a history. I know a lot of people that loved
the book and said that the film is nothing but popular crap. They
would have wanted a much more drastic film. So this would be the
opposite of your POV. The book displayed a particular view of
Scottish youth in a particular fashion. If you want to transfer that
into film you have to capture this with cinematographic means just
like the novel does with words. Since there is no coherent plot, it's
about giving a rendition of their feelings and ideas with other means
and in that I think the film is suitable.
I'd say that these 3-minute video directors contribute a helluvalot
to the movie industry. They are pushing the boundaries that
mainstream Hwood cinema likes to wallow in. Obviously sometimes they
are going too far. But to assist a story with new and challenging
cinematographic means is ok by me. And apart from that a technique
that might be unsuitable in one film might work great in another, so
the fact that these clip-directors bring it to the big pictures might
serve a purpose. Some of those video clips make it into art
exhibitions. So if they are good enough for those, they should be
good enough for the lowlife of popular movies.
And even such a film as Romeo and Juliet that is completely
sacrificing Shakespeare to a 90 min video clip is doing an acceptable
job in bringing kids to deal with Shakespeare. Even if they don't
really deal with him. But I suppose a lot of pre-puberty girlies went
to read the play, and might have found something beyond cute Leo and
Clare Danes - which is probably more than, say, Brannagh can claim.
What I dislike more is the heavy reliance on FX, on huge explosions
and computer animation as that seems to work as a replacement for
gripping plots lately, or as you can read on the Star Wars prequel
page in reference to the marketing for a film about leaping lizards:
Story *does* matter.
In the end these flashy 3min-directors might at times be accused of
the same, but I prefer an unseen camera angle over yet another
mindless explosion for the sake of it.

Subject: [MV] Bullworth, Bladerunner
I just saw Bullworth and Bladerunner (directors cut) on the big screen
this weekend. I have seen Bladerunner somewhere around 15 times already,
but it is so much better in a theater- the detail in the movie always
blows me away. (A local theater is having a festival of warner brother
movies for their 75th birthday- Bladerunner was part of the 80's fest.)
Ridley Scott's attention to detail is amazing- His apocolyptic (sp?)
vision was amazing- he defined a whole genre of movies (at least
visually) with Bladerunner. Now if they would just redo it and take away
all of the Atari logos... =)
Bullworth wasn't bad- it's not the best movie I have seen recently, but I
did like it. Bullworth and Wag the Dog both present interesting views of
politics- they would make an excellent double feature. Both have
interesting perspectives (as a poli sci major, I have to appreciate it.)
Neither are new views, but they are shown in good formats. I did like
Bullworth's cutting through the sh** of politics and fundraising. Anyone
for some fundraising legislation?=) (actually, I heard Leon Panetta and
Haley Barbur debate this very issue last february...)

I have a funny story to tell about Bladerunner. I went to see the
directors cut on a big screen when they first released it, being a true fan
of the movie. I got my pop corn and sat down mid-row center. I noticed
everyone in the theater was staring at me. At first I couldn't figure out
what was going on then I realized that the four members of the rock band U2
were sitting in the row directly in front of me! It didn't have to much
effect on me, but it sure did freak out the girl that I was with. I don't
think she saw one second of the movie, she just sat there with a gapping
mouth, staring at the back of Bono's head.
Not much, really, to do with movies except to say that U2 is a fan of
Bladerunner.
