As you all probably know by now, Phil Hartman is dead. Evidently his
wife shot him and then took her own life. The story is still coming
out so some of the above could turn out to be wrong.
I thought that Phil Hartman was one of the funniest guys alive. Most
people know him from Saturday night live but he did his best work in
the series "News Radio." Of course he also did many voice jobs such
as many characters on "The Simpsons." His film career never
completely took off but I believe he would have found his niche
eventually and been an even bigger star. Of all the celebrities that
have died recently I find his to be the most tragic. The even sadder
thing is that evidently his children were home when this all
happened. The inevitable TV tribute will be easily filled with so
many funny clips.
Also, evidently Leanardo Dicaprio is forcefully denying that he has
signed for American Psycho. Evidently an offer was made but the
production company (Lions Gate) prematurely announced his acceptance.
A director is still not attached either. Variety ran two articles
concerning this (yesterday and today) and there are some ugly details
concerning the ousting of the original lead and director. There are
also cries of foul in the independent film community. I wonder if
Leo will walk away? Anyway, his people indicate that he is
considering several offers at this time.

Thanks, Bruce. I, for one, hadn't heard about Phil Hartman. He was
the last real talent to appear on SNL and he will be sorely missed.

Bruce- If Leo backs out of this mess, he'll show me he is a lot smarter
than I thought he was.
He'd be much smarter to take 15 million for a remake of The Wizard of Oz.

Good point. On another (unrelated) list, we had a discussion last year
about rip-offs, homages, satire, and all related subjects. I'd like to
hear how some of the people here consider rip-offs.
My main criterion is that the original must be a great piece of work, and
the copy adds nothing to it. As with some of the examples mentioned
earlier, Point of No Return was a remake of Nikika, with NO changes at all.
Hollywood could just as easily dubbed the movie into English, and we would
have had the same movie as we did with Point of No Return. In my opinion,
this movie added nothing to the original. Same with Waterworld, to me.
To Wong Foo took what was a great, original concept from Priscilla, Queen
of the Desert. The problem here is that they WANT to be associated with
Priscilla. I have never watched this movie, because the promos just
screamed Priscilla to me. This may be a wonderful movie, but I have been
turned off of it by the promos.
Those

This is another good point. I have heard both that Desperado was a remake
of El Mariachi AND that it was the sequel (with a third one planned).
However, if it was a remake, I think a point in it's favour is that the
creator of El Mariachi is the one that did Desperado. I have not seen El
Mariachi yet, but have heard that it is much better.
>
>I'm not saying it is anything new either but has been with us from the

Well, as I started to say above, there are rip-offs, and then there are
homages and satires. For example, Young Frankenstein was a satire of
Frankenstein (and horror movies in general). Also, we have to decide where
to draw the line. We can't say that EVERY horror movie is a rip-off of
Frankenstein. Then let's not forget Mary Reilly. The movie itself was
horrible. However, I like the idea a lot (the telling of the Jeckel and
Hyde story from the maid's perspective). There is a fresh reworking of an
old idea (another one is West Side Story, which was a remake of Romeo and
Juliet). To my mind, the movies I call "rip-offs" are the ones that add
nothing to the original concept.
I've seen both
>City on Fire and Reservoir Dogs and it was almost completely different

I haven't seen City of Fire, so I cannot really say. However, I know that
Reservoir Dogs was well-done. I would hope that something was added to the
story.
Another that comes to mind is Last Man Standing, which has an interesting
history. It was originally a Japanese gangster movie (I cannot remember
the name, but am sure that someone here will know:-) that was remade as a
Clint Eastwood western. I hesitate to say that it was Fistful of Dollars
(but if I am wrong, I am sure that someone will know the proper movie),
then re-remade as Last Man Standing. Not a great movie, but I thought it
stood on it's own, and again, had something original to say.

Yes, I have heard that. And 12 Monkeys is based on the French short La
Jette. I liked both movies, and thought that they took a great concept
from a short, and expanded on it greatly.

Again, some good points. Perhaps this is in the eye of the beholder.
Perhaps I hold some films in contempt because *I* am so enamoured with the
originals. There may very well be people out there who have seen both
versions of the films I have mentioned, and like the remakes better. There
may be some that think that 12 Monkeys is complete crap, and did a great
disservice to La Jette. Perhaps even, there are people that like both
versions equally.
Anyone out there have these opinions?? I would personally like to hear
them, and the defence of your position, as well.
Movies are a emotional medium. This is why some people passionately love
one piece of work, and passionately hate something else. I even know
people who actually liked Speed 2:-)
I think that there have been some very good, passionate discussions here.
Just some more ideas of what to discuss.

DICAPRIO NOT QUITE 'PSYCHO'
Leonardo DiCaprio is distancing himself from reports that he
will play a serial killer in a film based on Brett Easton
Ellis' grisly 1991 novel "American Psycho," reports Variety.
Leo's handlers went on the offensive Wednesday to correct
what they termed the "misinformation" stemming from a widely
hyped press release at the recent Cannes Film Festival that
said their client would star in the controversial project
for a reported $21 million. Leo's camp claims there have
been "no negotiations between DiCaprio's representatives and
[the producing company] regarding financial and other terms
for appearing in 'American Psycho.'" A statement added that
Leo had simply "expressed interest" in the film, "as he has
for several other scripts."

I'm glad Copland was mentioned. I felt like this was one of the most
underappreciated movies of last year. Starstudded cast and great
performances all around, especially by Sylvester Stallone. A surprisingly
great performance by Stallone. Arguably his best to date.

I agree. I was very surprised by this movie. I didn't really know what to
expect when I rented it. I thought Stallone was marvelous and was
disappointed that he didn't receive more praise for this role. I thought
it was a wonderful film.

Good point, Gary. I didn't even consider studio remakes. I think Disney
is trying to update their movies for a new generation (Flubber, Nutty
Professor, Dr Doolittle), which in some ways is good business sense (seems
to look good for their bottom line). However, I think that your children
should be given the chance to see the originals of these movies. Some of
them are timeless.
On that note, I am hearing rumours (and perhaps someone is pulling my leg,
but I am sure the idea has crossed some studio exec's desk) of a remake of
Wizard of Oz. Of course, there have been different versions, namely The
Wiz, but again, something was added here. (A different viewpoint is, I
feel, always a worthwhile pursuit. Doesn't mean the movie will be any
good, tho:-) Dial M for Murder is due out any day now (with a name change,
to attract a whole new audience).
Back to the original point, I saw Flubber, and thought it was an alright
movie. Can't remember the original, tho, as it was a long time ago, but I
recall that it was very good. My vote goes for the original, but I am
willing to give a passing nod to Flubber.

Hello! everyone:
I'm a new in this list and this is my first time to send a message.I'm a
Japanese girl and a university student. I really like to watch movies but in
Japan, it is so late to be open to the public the new movies. So, I want you to
recommend some great movies. Recentry, I watched AS GOOD AS IT GETS in the
theatre. It was so interesting! I liked it very much. In the U.S, that movie has
already been released as a video, I think.
Now, I want to watch " The Horse Whisperer" and "Deep Impact". My key-pal
recommended these. How were these? If you've already watched them, please tell
me your impression.
Soon, "Great Expectation" is open. Did you watch it ? I'm going to watch it. I
like Ethan Hawk(by the way, my favorite movie star is Brad Pitt).
Then, I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
<P.S>
I'm sorry, my English skill is not so good, so if there are any mistakes, please
correct me.

Thanks, Bruce. I, for one, hadn't heard about Phil Hartman. He was
the last real talent to appear on SNL and he will be sorely missed.
