Subject: [MV] The X-Files Movie
I'd just like to take a second or two to comment on the upcoming X-Files
movie. Since the board is dead right now, this is as good a time as any. I
don't know (don't care actually)whether anyone else is looking forward to
this, but I am. But I admit that I have some reservations about the making
of this program into a full-length film. I guess this is a sign of success
for the X-Files. Only really successful shows become movies after being on
tv. Of course, a whole lot of shows are movies before debuting on tv.
(Pilot episodes etc. Hawaii 5-0, Streets of San Francisco, and M.A.S.H.
come immediately to mind)
If you look at many of the recent tv programs made into movies they have
ranged from barely mediocre (Addams Family) to worse (Brady Bunch movie) to
Who Knows what the heck they were thinking? ( Twin Peaks movie). If the
X-Files movie is wildly successful, it will be an accomplishment for the
cast and crew. I would hope they would follow the pattern the geniuses at
Star Trek implemented: change next to nothing. But then again, how do you
justify making someone pay $8 to get something they normally get for free?
You better give them a darn good story and a darn good show! Most of all,
I hope they don't try to cater to new converts. The X-Files movie is not
the time to become mainstream. Trying to be all things to all people is
about the surest way to failure. I must say:
I like Duchovney and Anderson. I have heard good things about this movie.
I'm hoping it can live up to my great expectations for it. I think the
challenge they all face is to make this movie as memorable as anything they
have ever done. And I think , ultimately, the real success or failure of
the movie ( It certainly should do good box-office, at least the first
couple weeks) will be judged by how well it does this. Any comments?

Hello all,
There is also the film "Presumed Innocent" that he starred in with
Brian Dennehy, Bonnie Bedelia, and Greta Saccahi <---(hope that's
spelled right). That was based on a best selling novel a few years ago
of the same title. That movie was all right IMO. Laters...

Rob,
Welcome aboard.
I like Nicolas Cage, especially in his early stuff. "Moonstruck" was
probably my favorite. I just saw "Con Air" the other noght and hated
it. Cage was awful but the script didn't leave room for any good
performances.
I'm not sure I understand your reference to Meg Rayn and the film "Peggy
Sue Got Married." It's been awhile since I've seen it, but I don't
recall Meg Ryan being in it. I like Meg Ryan on screen, especially in
"When Harry Met Sally." However, from what I've read, I don't think
this feeling would extend beyond the cinema.

I'm curious to know what others think of Mr. Malcovich. I think he's a good
actor, though he seems to get the same type of roles over and over(never saw
Empire of the Sun). He usually plays a bad guy of intense intelligence.
However, he doesn't seem to blend into the background of a movie such as
other actors/actresses playing the "bad guy" role; he's there, and you know
he's there for the duration. I look forward to seeing more movies starring
him.

Enjoy, Cheers!

I think he's a great actor! If I remember correctly, he didn't play a bad
guy in 'Of Mice and Men'. :) In Empire of the Sun, he did a great job
also. (I haven't seen that movie in years..)

If you can find a copy of it, check out "The Glass Menagerie". It's quite
a bit different from Malkovitch's regular roles. You might also want to
check out "Dangerous Liasons", in which Malkovitch is a bad guy,
basically, or rather one that exploits women... sort of. It's an
interesting movie. His role in it is closer to his performance in "A
portrait of a lady" (one of the longest and most boring movies ever) than
anything else with him that I have ever seen.
so yes, I really like John Malkovitch. (hey, we haven't forgotten "In the
Line of Fire", have we?=)

I saw part of Peggy Sue Got Married last year, Meg Ryan was not there.
Rather helen Hunt was there as the daughter of Kathleen Turner and
Nicolas Cage.

JR,
Malkovich has definitely been typecasted into the heady bad-guy role.
It's a shame too, becuase I concur with your sentiment on his acting
ability. I watched "Con Air" for the first time a few days ago. The
movie left something to be desired and otherwise tarnished Malkovich's
admirable performance in a poorly written vehicle. I think he does
stick out in these bad movies because he is the only redeeming quality.
Try "Dangerous Liaisons" on for size if you haven't seen it. It's
Malkovich at his best in a role perfectly suited for him.

"In the Line of Fire" was one of John Malkovich's funnest roles, IMO
However, subsequent to that i've come to respect him less as an actor more and
more. Not only did "Con Air" blow chunks in my popcorn bucket but Malkovich
was primo mediocrity . . . however what could he do with such a lame script?
"Mary Reilly" anyone? Ick! Not even special effects saved his and Julia
Roberts' performances.
And of all movies, "Of Mice and Men" he went and changed the character of
Lenny into some imbecilic, Rainman-wanna-be, super-retard, which Lenny is not
(imho). Randy Quaid did a far more superior job.
Most recently in "Man in the Iron Mask" which i personally loved, John
Malkovich played a has-been muskateer, who for some reason was gay? I can't
be certain of this but Mr Malcovich played him as one of the most effeminate
muskateers i've ever seen on screen. Interpretation i suppose . . . ? (not
that there's anything wrong with that . . . .)
But, i must give credit where credit is due, and his performance in "The Ogre"
(aka "Der Unhold") was excellent, in addition to having an a brilliant script
to work with, and beautiful art direction. However, this movie does not seem
to have been released far and wide. For Malkovich fans a must see.
Perhaps Malkovich is playing his cards so that he can get the big bucks for
crap like "Con Air", and then go off and do theatre and quality independent
films for the love of acting. I hope so. It's such a shame when an actor
sells his soul for the almighty dollar.

I agree, Gary- Malkovitch is great in villian/bad guy roles. but he's also
impressive in his other roles, the ones with more depth. That' s why I
like him in movies like "Dangerous Liasons". He can be the bad guy but
have depth, more depth than movies like Con Air (which I thought was fun,
by the way.)
Note: I assume in "Man in the Iron Mask" that Malkovitch playes Aremis.
For some background information, in the Three Muskeeters (the book, not
the movie) Aremis is the musketeer who wants to join the church. Despite
his fighting abilities, he manages to have soft white hands and be fairly
pretty. He is also a ladies man and one of his lovers playes an important
role in the book.
second note: I recommended "the Glass Menagerie" in a previous e-mail, and
while I still do I want to add this note: The movie is, of course, based
on Tennesse William's play, and Williams work doesn't translate to the
most exciting movies. The movie stays fairly close to the play
(unlike the Kirk Douglas version.) Although it is not boring, if your main
movie turn on is action this probably is not the movie for you.

Actually Jeremy Irons plays the fair handed minister Aramis.
John Malkovich plays Athos who is raising a son by himself,
GΘrard Depardieu is Porthos the drunken ruffian and
Gabriel Byrne plays the infamous D'Artagnan

For some background information, in the Three Muskeeters (the book, not
the movie) Aremis is the musketeer who wants to join the church. Despite
his fighting abilities, he manages to have soft white hands and be fairly
pretty. He is also a ladies man and one of his lovers playes an important
role in the book.

The bad guy roles for Malkovich really seemed to have started with "In the
Line of Fire". Prior to that film, he had a much wider variety of roles.

Question: Who played the main bad guy in this film opposite Sylvester
Stallone's good guy and Janine Turner (whose acting by the way I love!) ???

thanks for correcting me... Athos (again the literary charector) is a
nobleman, intellegent, well-porportioned and strong (seriously, there's a
quote that goes something like "he was so well porportioned he could
sometimes quell the giant" (ie, stop Porthos.) He's also depressed,
bitter, a good swordsman, but if he has a son by the time of "Man in the
Iron Mask" he probably got over the bitterness... he's a profound
character.=20
