  7. I watched this comedy again, I had seen it about 10-12
  8. years ago probably ... so-so material IMO but it has sort
  9. of a cult following ... 2.5/5
  10.  
  11. It wasn't boring at least, well, besides an oh-so obvious
  12. s*b plot about a so-called romance between John Candy's
  13. teenage son and a lil' girlie he meets while on vacation
  14. ... (Rolling my eyes back !)
  15.  
  16. In fact every time the movie was focusing on that "couple"
  17. the same silly elevator music could be heard on the
  18. soundtrack ... after the 3rd time or so I was actually
  19. rocking from side-to-side gently, pretending I was enjoying
  20. the music  (The girl watching it with me was laughing so I
  21. guess she was agreeing it was a rather ludicrous twist !)

  25. Good work in general by the actors involved : Dan Aykroyd,
  26. John Candy, Supporting cast ... 
  27.  
  28. Some jokes are funny like when Candy is waterskiing, those
  29. naughty raccoons hogging food or when Bart-The-Bear jumps
  30. on him near the end ... while others are just unbelievable
  31. or silly so it's a hit-and-miss movie ... 
  32.  
  33. Side note I REALLY enjoyed the ending credits with the song
  34. "Land of a 1,000 dances" and Aykroyd going wild, dancing
  35. and having fun with other cast members ... that was a
  36. highlight ... I mean I was LOVING IT !!  ;-)
  37.  
  38. Unfortunately, I can't recommend the film overall even if
  39. it wasn't awful, cutting a few silly scenes and especially
  40. the "romantic" subplot would have helped ...

  65. cast.  The rating represents my personal enjoyment of the
  66. movie, not what I thought of his performance although I
  67. think he is good in most cases ... ;-)

  75. (I know this will bring me some "Heat" but I think this
  76. film is excellent and very entertaining !)

  79. - Romeo and Juliet : 1/5  (I couldn't finish it !)

  81. - Titanic : 5/5

  115. Does anybody know about the various versions of this movie? Different =
  116. tapes have it between 113 and 117 minutes. I know when a movie is =
  117. released by several different companies, credit sequences and rounding =
  118. and such can affect the length times by a couple of minutes, but I also =
  119. know editing can affect this as well. The 117 minute one I have (I have =
  120. 3 different versions) claims to be a "directors cut". Does anybody know =
  121. if there were scenes deleted or added for different releases? Any info =
  122. at all would be helpful.

  141. Today I watched "Scarred city" (1998).  3/5
  142.  
  143. Low budget film about a cop who is a bit too trigger happy
  144. (Shot 3 bad guys in less than a year !) so he is asked to
  145. become part of a special unit of the police force that
  146. "takes care" of career criminals without worrying too much
  147. about the law ... a-la Dirty Harry basically ... wasting
  148. bad guys and not doing any paperwork, you know the drill
  149. ... 
  150.  
  151. I thought it was entertaining for the most part even if the
  152. plot is quite unoriginal since it's the oooooooooooold
  153. lady-in-trouble-rescued-by-an-outlaw-cop trick ... Only
  154. contains material that I had seen before in other films and
  155. or TV shows like "Miami vice" ... 
  156.  
  157. Nice stunts, action sequences, shoot outs, scenes in strip
  158. clubs, etc.  So it's definitely a "guy flick" ...
  159.  
  160. Stephen Baldwin, Chazz Palminteri, Tia Carrere ... the
  161. acting is not so great or memorable ... so-so dialogues and
  162. plot twists but you can't be too picky with such a film !

  322. and see for yourself ... I saw the new Psycho at the
  323. theater and then the very next day I saw the original one

  462. I saw this film today ... 3/5.  It's nasty though and if
  463. you don't care for movies showing drug use you should stay
  464. away from this !!

  466. Ben Stiller plays Jerry Stahl, a writer who made a lot of
  467. money in the 80's writing stories for the Alf sit com if I
  468. am not mistaken !!  Anyway they changed the name of the
  469. program in the movie ...

  471. The problem is that he was spending all the money on drugs
  472. of all kinds basically ...At least he EXERCISED, running 
  473. 5 milles daily before shooting up in the bathroom at work
  474. !!  ...

  479. Character development tale as we follow the guy and how he
  480. slowly but surely gets into more and more trouble due to
  481. his drug addictions.  Not for the squimmish in part as when

  483. a decent vein in his shot up arms ...  all this while his
  484. baby daughter is in the car seat next to him ... phew !

  487. Hurley, Janeane Garofalo, Fred Willard (sp. ?)  ...

  489. I was thinking 3.5/5 for the most part but the ending is
  490. really on automatic pilot ... it's like they didn't really
  491. know how to end the film so it just *stops* basically ...

  711. Last night we watched a three tape movie of the TV mini-series "Queenie". 
  712. It was a fictionalized story of Merle Oberon's early life and career. From 
  713. the best that I can determine it does match up a good bit with her life.
  714.  
  715. Very good mini-series with outstanding cast. Kirk Douglas and much more.
  716.  
  717. I would give it 4 out of 5 stars.

  821. Alright, I enjoyed the recent discussions about "Freddy got
  822. fingered"  (More than I would enjoy the movie itself, no
  823. doubt !) but I keep hearing conflicting opinions ... Some
  824. people say it's the worst of all times while others are
  825. labeling it the best of all times (??) ... at least in
  826. *those ads* !!  ;-)
  827.  
  828. So it's pretty clear that no movie out there can create a
  829. critical consensus, i.e. EVERYBODY agreeing that it's
  830. really a great film !! ... 
  831.  
  832. Among my Top 10 favorites of all times, I think only "Taxi
  833. driver" (1976) would be considered by a vast majority of
  834. people as being "ace" ...

  3533. as before seeing it I was thinking it certainly had a shot
  3534. at my Top 10 favorites for 2000 ... It ends up at 3/5 so it
  3535. won't make it.

  3537. Simple story of a naughty girl who gets in trouble in
  3538. school fighting people so one day she decides to start
  3539. training to become a boxer.  We also meet her drunken
  3540. father and her lil' brother that was also training to be a
  3541. boxer at one point but he was so bad that he decided to
  3542. quit and make drawings instead.  ;-)  We see her train,
  3543. fight, train, fight, meet a nice boy at the gym, flirt,
  3544. talk to her girlfriend, swear for no reason ... etc.
  3545.  
  3546. The entire film is very predictable and I could see all the
  3547. "twists" coming from far away ... especially the ones
  3548. involving the boyfriend ! (Santiago Douglas)  ;-)
  3549.  
  3550. Good work by Michelle Rodriguez in the lead, she is indeed
  3551. in good shape and almost made me believe she could be an
  3552. amateur fighter ... but it's pretty clear that she could
  3553. never really win a whole lot of fights, unless she fights
  3554. only beginners ... Her technique was more than questionable
  3555. ... Plus, could she really win fighting against boys ...
  3556. even if they are the same weight ??  
  3557. I find that unlikely ...

  3559. At one point she is having a discussion with a boxer, one
  3560. of her opponents ... and she is supposed to be the exact
  3561. same weight as him according to the script (125 pounds even
  3562. !) ... yet it was obvious to me that the boy weighed at
  3563. least 15 pounds more, he was 6 inches taller and his arms
  3564. were certainly bigger (I almost laughed when he said in a
  3565. whining voice : "I gave everything I had but you beat me
  3566. ..." ... ;-)   snif ! snif !  If he had *really* given
  3567. everything he had I think she would have ended up in a
  3568. hospital ...

  3606. Tom is the older brother and he just can't stand it how his
  3607. father is mistreating him and especially his 17 years old
  3608. brother ... so he decides to take things into his own hands
  3609. one night and "do him in" ... He uses a big metal rod to
  3610. stab his father in the heart while he sleeps ... Then he
  3611. goes to wake up his brother and tell him what he did ...
  3612.  
  3613. The problem is Tom is an adult and if he is convicted he
  3614. will be in jail forever, so the brothers make this
  3615. agreement that they will tell the coppers it was the
  3616. younger brother who did it so he will only get a small
  3617. sentence in a juvenile facility.  They change clothes
  3618. because Tom's gear was all soaked in blood of course ...
  3619. The plan works and the younger brother is sentenced to 4
  3620. years ...
  3621.  
  3622. We then follow the life of the older brother mainly as he
  3623. struggles to make it, paying the bills, working odd jobs,
  3624. an occasional armed robbery (I was wondering how many
  3625. convenience stores there were in that county because he was
  3626. robbing so many !) ... He also meets a lovely young lass
  3627. during that time, but always feels guilty because he knows
  3628. he is the one who should be in jail ... rotting.

  3630. Surprisingly good especially if you like NASTY low budget
  3631. movies.  I was sometimes reminded of "Chuck & Buck" but the
  3632. ending is not as good.  I didn't know Tom was such a good
  3633. actor too, I think I only saw him in that silly "Werewolf
  3634. in Paris" movie ...

  3670. inappropriate to have such a premiere when the movie is
  3671. about such a tragedy, how many people died during that
  3672. attack ?? ... I doubt you saw that at the premieres of
  3673. other serious films like Schindler's list, Platoon, Full
  3674. metal jacket ... etc. etc.

  3814. should be handled differently then one that is fictional
  3815. like "Armageddon" for example ... The premiere should
  3816. reflect that and show some respect for the people who
  3817. actually died when it happened.  Bruckheimer obviously

  4019. Clive Owen is slick and sure of himself, taking care of
  4020. business.  We get to meet his girlfriend, some of his
  4021. co-workers, one greek fellow that steals from the casino
  4022. and is always partying after work and a lil' brunette that
  4023. is a fellow dealer ... the casino manager, a few of the
  4024. customers ...

  4026. Not a whole lot happens in the film, it's mostly a
  4027. character development tale until one of the customers
  4028. becomes friends with the croupier and tries to get him to
  4029. cheat the casino out of money ... 
  4030.  
  4031. In the meantime he is writing a book based on a dealer in a
  4032. casino so we never really know what is "real" and what is
  4033. not ... a bit strange !  Good twist near the end too ...
  4034.  
  4035. Good acting by everyone involved, excellent visuals too ...
  4036. I liked all the scenes in the casino that were well made
  4037. and interesting ... this is a film noir film (a "femme
  4038. fatale" is present !)

  4040. James Berardinelli picks this one as one of the best film
  4041. of the year 2000 and gives it a 3.5/4 ! (It was made in
  4042. 1998 in Britain but as you know a film doesn't really
  4043. "exist" until it is presented in the US, hehe !)

  4214. Alright, I just finished watching this film and it was
  4215. quite an ordeal ...

  4217. I give it a low 2.5/5, I was often hesitating between 2 and
  4218. 2.5/5 but decided to be generous considering the strong
  4219. cast and the nice visuals too.

  4221. The problem is this film is slightly boring and/or
  4222. uninteresting so even someone like me who likes gangster
  4223. films wasn't really intrigued by this story ... I was often
  4224. reminded of "City Hall" with Pacino, Fonda, Sizemore (Was
  4225. he in that one ?) because both films have good actors but
  4226. the tale is simply not very "gripping" ... It's not awful
  4227. either at least, just very forgettable.

  4229. The story could have been told in 30 minutes but they take
  4230. nearly 2 hours to get to the painfully long ending.  Mark
  4231. Whalberg plays an ex-con who is looking for a job (I was
  4232. thinking of "Kiss of death" with David Caruso and Nicolas
  4233. Cage, another disappointing gangster film !)

  4235. He goes back home and soon asks a friend of his mother's
  4236. (James Caan with a mustache, hello !) who owns some kind of
  4237. company that does work for the railways.  The problem is
  4238. that company is crooked and often destroys the work of
  4239. other companies so they can get the contracts to do the
  4240. repairs in the future ... Joaquin Phoenix is in charge of
  4241. that part of the operation along with a group of so-called
  4242. thugs ... Seek and destroy.

  4244. Of course Whalberg gets in trouble as soon as he goes out
  4245. with Phoenix, someone gets killed, a cop is attacked ...
  4246. and I kept thinking : "I know it's going to be good soon

  4249. wondering if it would ever end ...

  4288. Alright, a rainy day here so it was the perfect time to
  4289. watch this depressing film.

  4291. "Sue : Lost in Manhattan" (1997) ... 3.5/5 ... small budget
  4292. independant film with Anna Thomson  (Not Emma Thompson !)
  4293. in the lead ... It's a very good film too, worth seeing if
  4294. you like "nasty" movies but it certainly won't make you
  4295. feel good afterwards.

  4297. Simple story of a lady in her early 30's who is struggling
  4298. ... she lost her job months ago and can't find 
  4299. a new one no matter how hard she tries ... She is 3 months
  4300. behind in her rent and her landlord has given her an
  4301. ultimatum so she tries REALLY hard to find something,
  4302. anything ... 
  4303.  
  4304. Mixed up in all this is her complicated sex life, she has a
  4305. boyfriend but he travels a lot and is in "need" all the
  4306. time ... she has real issues with sex, she can't get enough
  4307. of it no matter who she meets she wants to have sex with
  4308. them basically ... 
  4309.  
  4310. For example once she goes to the movies and sees a man she
  4311. likes, less than 5 minutes later she is having sex with him
  4312. ... She says that she struggles to hold a conversation with
  4313. someone so it's her way to communicate.  Once she meets an
  4314. old man in a park and he tells her that he would like to
  4315. see her breasts ... of course she complies within' seconds
  4316. displaying her impressive female charms as if it was
  4317. "normal" to do that in public ... (It's amusing to see the
  4318. old man's reaction as he is so pleased that she accepted to
  4319. do that !)

  4321. Character development tale, not a whole lot of story ... 
  4322. It won some prizes in Berlin if I am correct. Anna Thomson
  4323. is impressive in the lead, I didn't know any of the other
  4324. actors but they were all appropriate ... Good dialogues,
  4325. etc.

  4402. I still don't see no reason (even for the "worn-outs") to "give it a try"
  4403. instead of pig-farming on a cookoo-nowhere island. I remember that those
  4404. scenes when a spark of doubt escapes Dustin's content character in the
  4405. "Papillon" when Steve's character was already hand-paddling and looking
  4406. back at the "loser" are the most impresive, but perhaps even most
  4407. impressive is when he turns his back to the deceised Scottish actor
  4408. (american actually). This "turning back" could portray not just Dustin's
  4409. incapability to "give it a try" even so old and broken, but could also
  4410. reflect a director's message that Jews in general are not adventurous,
  4411. rather place-tied?
  4412.  
  4413. But these last scenes could portray also totally different message: that
  4414. Jews should never give up and should not raise pigs and "give it a try"
  4415. like Steve's character did by jumping into the possible lethal waters?
  4416.  
  4417. On a more higher, spiritual level, the director could'ave wanted to say
  4418. that Dustin and Steve, after all those bodily sufferings and pain
  4419. endurance, "switched" their souls, so the floating escapee on a coconut
  4420. raft was actually Dustin (Jew), while in the Dustin's body was Steve's
  4421. soul (Scot stayed on the land). If this reasoning is true, this movie
  4422. could'ave been the message to the world saying: "Please take a moment and
  4423. look at Jewish fate. First we can't protect ourselves (Steve offered
  4424. Dustin protection on the transport ship at the beginning of the movie),
  4425. then we suffer for wanting to live free ("beyond the walls of the
  4426. convicted") and then we end up on a coco-raft since we have no home".
  4427. Actually this last point could reason why the director of the movie (or
  4428. better yet the scenario-guy) left "Dustin" on a no-name island, beacuse he
  4429. (Jew) had no "home to come back to" like "Steve".
  4430.  
  4431. But ... if you look it from the "Jewish" perspective (I am not a Jew), you
  4432. get totally different picture: first you lough when Dustin asks for help
  4433. on that transport ship at the beginning of the movie (Jews are very alert;
  4434. they seldom sleep and they are warriors in their blood - due to the
  4435. history of survival), the you lough when you see others non-Jews preparing
  4436. the escape from the prison (Jews are by nature alergic to anything that
  4437. has walls) and you role on the floor from loughter when you see "Dustin"
  4438. who is unsure whether to "give it a try or not" over the wall (Jews are
  4439. always precalculated; their brain runs at much faster rate then the others
  4440. - non-Jews; that's why you seldom find "stupid" Jew or a Jew with bad
  4441. math-marks in school). At the end, you (as a Jew) get the following
  4442. mesage: "You gotta be kiddin' to give up now and raise no-eat-meat on the
  4443. wuthering heights of no-man's land! Live the life until the very end and
  4444. never "anchor"!" In other words the coco-raft is a symbolism of enjoying
  4445. the life to the fullest, or until you are totally crippled or so.

  4447. I remember as a kid I was very confused as to Dustin's stay on that
  4448. prison-island (breaking the rule once is enough!; it could be worse,
  4449. etc.), but later, as you "spiritually" get to know Jews better, you find
  4450. the end of the movie to be a total sarcasm, because they are very lively
  4451. and they would never "give up".
  4452.  
  4453. On the other hand, the end of the movie could portay the following
  4454. message: "It is better to satisfy yourself with what little gains you have
  4455. (freedom on the island and raising pigs and crops), then to risk the rest
  4456. of your short life and try something too risky and with no prosperous
  4457. future".
  4458.  
  4459. That's my "double-point". I am unsure of the final message of this
  4460. "old-generation" movie. And I firmly believe that the director wanted to
  4461. send a "secret message about Jews" (or a "secret Jewish message"?) as to
  4462. how he sees the life of a Jew in the wicked and cruel world. This message
  4463. is much more discrete than "Schindler's list" where one has to "live-thru"
  4464. the agonizing past (although by no means is less worthy).
  4465.  
  4466. But, perhaps, both films "radiate" a background message: "We, Jews, need
  4467. friends", or "Help us, we are lonely"?
  4468.  
  4469. Please excuse me for being so "wordy", but rare are films nowdays that
  4470. have so much "artistic" and "spiritual realism" in them. I think it was
  4471. the artistic masterpiece as far as Dustin Hoffman's role.

  4551. Alright I had very high expectations for this film and it
  4552. didn't disappoint me at all ... 4.5/5

  4554. This is a "Nasty" film with a capital "N" though so I
  4555. wouldn't argue too much with someone who would say they
  4556. simply can't watch it or they have to stop watching it half
  4557. way through, something like that ... It shows a lot of
  4558. nasty scenes, drug use, sex, violence ...

  4560. The acting is amazing by everyone involved too ... I can't
  4561. help but think it was robbed at Oscar times not winning
  4562. anything but on the other hand such a twisted film getting
  4563. recognized by being nominated is really surprising too ...

  4565. Ellen Burstyn, Jennifer Connelly, Marlon Wayans, Jared
  4566. Letto ... everyone is in top form here (Even if physically
  4567. they probably have never looked worse on screen, kudos to

  4572. is addicted to diet pills and this silly television program

  4577. this scheme to buy and try to re-selll some of the stuff
  4578. for a profit, the only problem is they use most of the
  4579. stuff themselves which destroys them slowly but surely ...
  4580. so they have to make money fast ... Connelly selling her
  4581. lil' body to these sleazy guys, Letto and Wayans involved
  4582. in drug traffic, going nutz ...

  4584. Amazing visuals, editing, use of the split screen, sound
  4585. ... lots of neat camera tricks ... It is an impressive film
  4586. technically.  This is eye candy for someone who likes
  4587. "Nasty" films of course.  The last 25 minutes or so are
  4588. very hard to watch and I was feeling uncomfortable the
  4589. whole time ... all the characters were in crisis basically,
  4590. loud music, quick editing ... it was madness & kaos (chaos
  4591. !) !!

  4621. Thing's are not as clear cut as that.  I don't think the film portrays
  4622. all Italians as mobsters, The Sopranos do that (good show by the way),
  4623. but the Godfather is more a family story. And because it was a period
  4624. film set in the past, the film is more removed from the community in the
  4625. same way people view that mobster thing as something that was big in the
  4626. 20s and 30s  so they can pretend it was in the past.
