Director Ridley Scott is back with the ultimate sword-and-sandle movie. Everything about this movie is spectacular and overwhelming: the fight scenes (from 1-on-1 duels in the arena to thousands fighting in wars), the production design (Rome is spectacular), and the acting (I was pleasantly surprised to see Oliver Reed in a substantial part, considering that he's been dead for about a year). Note: it's definitely a "guy movie," although my wife liked it too. That's it for now (I wanted to remain spoiler-free), but give it a look this weekend and we'll discuss... What was the story > behind that? It's a long story, and I'm doing this from the top of my head, but here's the scoop as I remember it... Before any Bond movies were ever made, Ian Fleming (creator of Bond and author of the novels) worked out a screenplay with Kevin McClory called "Thunderball." By the time the first movie (DR. NO) was eventually made, the screenplay was set aside. Finding himself running out of ideas, Fleming dusted off the script and adapted it into the novel "Thunderball." The rights to most of the Bond novels were held by producer Albert "Cubby" Broccoli. When the franchise started taking off, he decided to film THUNDERBALL, based on the novel. McClory, who owned the rights to "Thunderball," allowed the film to be made if he could work on it as a co-producer. By the time THUNDERBALL was released, Ian Fleming was dead. Broccoli and McClory had a stormy relationship, to say the least. Eventually, they parted ways. McClory kept the rights to "Thunderball," and also won exclusive rights to the use of Blofeld and the SPECTRE organization (which is why they never appear by name in any Broccoli Bond film after DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER). In 1983 McClory wooed Sean Connery back into the role, and the original script was reworked at a different studio as NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN. If course, the plot is exactly the same as THUNDERBALL. Since Broccoli controlled the rights to many of the familiar elements in the Bond series, NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN lacked the Bond theme music, opening sequence, and featured different actors in the roles of M, Q, and Moneypenny. A couple of footnotes: there is one other novel that Broccoli didn't have the rights to: "Casino Royale." The rights for these were obtained by producers who filmed the novel as a spoof with David Niven, Peter Sellers, and Woody Allen (!). After many mergers and aquisitions, today all of the Bond films (including CASINO ROYALE and NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN) are owned by MGM. By the end of this year, MGM will have released all of the Bond films on DVD. I would say movies have changed compared to ten years ago. Now I can look up and find out about movies long before they come out. Trailers are readily available to look at. Movies can be marketed on the net (Blair witch project)to get a buzz before they come out. This will contiune to happen as the net becomes even better. What does everyone else think? It is available in the stores..OH yeah for all those who get the Mystery FChannel do not miss a 1944 film by Jean Renoir THE SOUTHENER (it is now also in the video store )' It definitly was one of the top 20 films of 1944. It is a rather grim but very powerful & arty story of a southern sharecropping family during the depression.It was only one of the few films made by Renoir in the USA VERY HIGHLY RECOMENBDED. Also, a lot of today's comedies substitute witty writing and funny situations with a never-ending string of "poo poo" jokes. That's just shock value, it's not funny and it's certainly not as "daring" as some of the filmmakers would like you to believe. Again, I'm not against that kind of humor (for instance, I thought THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY was hilarious), but lately it's been used as a crutch for writers who are too lazy or untalented to do something else. I'm thoroughly convinced that some of the best comedic writers are working in television. Take for instance, "The Simpsons." Take just about any 22 minute episode from that program and you'll get more laughs than most 90 minute comedies made in the last ten years. In fact, the oldest comedy on my list (QUICK CHANGE) is about ten years old. Good comedies are like a fine wine: they get better with age. Hi, I think the intention was to make a comment on the relative insignificance (and absurdity) of all of those characters and probably life in general. Anderson where he says that while working on the screenplay, he read something about a rain of frogs and thought that it would "look cool" in his movie. Later on, somebody told him about the Biblical significance (Exodus 8:2) and he decided to try and incorporate that as well (hence the recurring 82's in the film). But to summarize: the frogs at the end are there because the director thought they'd look cool. Actually that really lowers my opinion of the film then since most of the movie seemed to be a collage of the coolest little stories "P.T." had collected anyway. How disappointing then that the climax that seemed to "rain" on all of the mess was just another cool scene too.
