yeah, just wanna toss another two to four cents in. i've been
listening to it more, and each time i hear it, i do like it more. its
a lot more personal, a lot less allovertheplace, and its got a
simple, synthy sound that makes me think of moby just sitting in his
loft or his warehouse or wherver it is that he lives and just picking
stuff out on a keyboard. some of the music is sort of similar to
older stuff, but some of it, usually under his vocal tracks, is
really quite different. its a quieter, simpler, more downtempo effort
- - which moby does well. he's been promising us "more soulful" for
months now, and i think what moby continues to do right (even if its
in less variable ways) is make electronic, machine-produced music
that has a soul and is meaningful - even if his distribution or his
commerciality is not. everything is wrong is still one of my favorite
albums of all time - its the album that proved to me that electronic
music could still be music instead of effetcs and beats. thats
something moby has over the chem. bros. or fatboy or the other
superstar dj's out there.
as to whether 18 will hit as big as play did - i dunno. i remember
when play came out and he was so in need of promotion that he was
doing free concerts. i caught him in boston for free just as
'bodyrock' was getting some airplay. before that, i never thought
anyone would like him other than me. there were upwards of 14,000
people there that night. it might hit. "porcelain" was everywhere,
remember? that single went through the roof - and i think that as a
whole, 18 sounds like porcelain more than any other song on play, and
more like first cool hive than any other song on everything is wrong.
and thats great. its a really good album. he has a consistent sound
that's still branching out. he's not breaking his career this time
around with an animal rights (also a good album) that has no
commercial appeal - hes doing what a whole lot of other musicians do,
in fact. if his next album is a subtle development from 18, i think
we will still have every reason to be happy.

I got to listen to Sunday again and the vocal sure sounds like a sample from
another record.. it has that same residual background noise/music that a lot
of the other samples have. Either that or he recorded it with lower-fi
equipment (which isn't impossible given some demo songs were on Play).
Oh yeah the Wired article mentions that Moby had people buying him records
of all kinds not just gospel :)
I still have only listened through track 11. I think the slow approach to
this cd might have made me appreciate it more. I find that if I'm
overwhelmed with new music it all becomes a blur. I would have listened to
it all if I had all the tracks though (I was limited by my crap internet
connection).
I like it a lot so far!! Signs Of Love is my fav and Jam For The Ladies is
my least fav.

18 -> J Breas
Sleep Alone -> Whispring Wind (and not only because of the vocoded voice)
At Least We Tried -> Timmy T - One More Try

Hello everybody,
Listening to "18" for a 3rd and slower time. It's
exciting to be there as an artist continues and
changes, even if it's not that drastic of a change or
up to our high expectations :) I am still enjoying it
a great deal & many of them are already stuck in my
head... I agreed with Bart a lot:
> WAAMOS -> ....
I'm just happy this has some bold guitar even if it's
simple.
> In This World -> WDMHFSB
> In My Heart -> Hymn
Bart is right on.
> Another Woman -> Has sample from beat of Natural
> Blues
Actually the beginning is VERY Doors-y to me. I get a
strong similarity to "Riders on the Storm"...haha...
> Sunday (The day) -> WDMHFSB and Sunday Was A Fine
Day
Exactly.
> At Least We Tried -> Timmy T - One More Try
Unfortunately I must agree...blah!..
> Look Back In -> Bruce Springsteen - Streets of

> I'm Not Worried At All - anything by The Righteous

Hahahahaha... :)
> The Rafters - Fatboy Slim - Praise You
I can see that, though I think this one is more of a
mutated love child of Carnie and Revival music.
Well I don't want to over-listen to it this early on.
Thanks again to you ftp criminals :)

Indeed, to set the record straight, I'm not saying 18 is a bad album, it
just needs a few listens :)

Indeed! Listened to it again and that bassline is just like Riders on the

Subject: (mobility) String Q Tribute album
What's up? This is my first post to the list. I'm all nervous. Not
really, just wish to show my non-existent flair for the dramatic.
I recieved the "String Quartet Tribute to Moby" CD in the mail yesterday.
I ordered it off the website when someone posted a link a few weeks ago.
Here's the track listing:
1. God Moving Over the Face of the Waters (5:44)
2. Porcelain (3:59)
3. Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad? (5:21)
4. Everything Is Wrong (3:00)
5. Hymn (4:31)
6. Novia (2:36)
7. Everloving (3:38)
8. Guitar, Flute & String (2:12)
9. Run On (3:34)
10. Holiday Rush (6:10) -original track inspired by the music of Moby)
Players:
Vln: Janna Jacoby, Pam Jacobson
Vla: Tom Tally, Pam Jacobson
Vlc: Steve Velez
Vb: Frederick Charlton
My opinion of this disk is that it is very interesting. I've checked out
other tribute albums but have always been dissappionted. There's usually
only one track (typically track one) that is worth repeating. The last
track is usually then a piece of trash.
I don't think this is the case with "the String Quartet Tribute to Moby."
The interpretations are very tasteful. I'm glad to see that the producer
and engineers avoided using extraneous effects and synth/voice overdubs,
opting to allow the acoustic instruments render the material (though I
think they stray from this a bit with the original track)
GMOTFOTW is very nice. Porcelain is cool too (they use the low strings to
mimic the voice sample... which made me laugh). Other highlights include
their version of Hymn and GF&S. Run On is jaunty. The original track is
complex and is a throw back to some of his earlier material. I've always
wondered what techno/house rhythms would sound like pumping from a string
quartet. Now I know.
All I can say is that it is interesting and worth a listen. I've not heard
"re-play, a tribute to moby." Can anyone speak on this album?

Has anyone been able to find audio samples of this string quartet tribute cd
on the web? (I couldn't find the link on the vitamin site, either).
Amazon says it's supposed to be released April 30th -- congrats on getting
it early, Topher. Can you upload a track or 2 to the FTP? :o)
Also, you can hear snippets of Re:play Tribute to moby on the cdnow site:

Nothing blew me away on this one, but it might be fun to hear the entire
album before I pass judgment.
Thanks,
Troy
