Just plan to check out the line up when you get there. I didn't write it
down but I _think_ this is how it went...

starting at 4 or so on the main stage rinocerose, the roots, new order,
outkast, moby
starting earlier... i think 3:30... Behrouz or something like that, then
Derrek May, Locals, The Orb Paul Oakenfold.
I think Timo Mass went on first but I could be wrong. It was all confusing
for me and so I just suggest you check the boards when you walk in. It's
not too hard to find the lineup posted.

almost hear the tremors resounding around esso's central office!

Goldie, Fabric and Lavelle against Esso

Fabric announce 'Stop Esso' line-up.

Goldie, James Lavelle, film-maker Chris Cunningham, Spiritualized, Silicone
Soul and Ross Allen head the proposed line-up for a 'Stop Esso' night at
Fabric on Sep 6.

Fabric are the first club and youth/pop culture force to join the 'Stop
Esso' campaign (www.stopesso.com) which argues that Esso (known as
ExxonMobil in the USA) is 'the world's biggest climate villain'. The 'Stop
Esso' campaign accuses the company of undermining the Kyoto Protocol,
lobbying US President Bush to pull out of the UN climate negotiations (and
funding his recent presidential campaign) and refusing to invest in clean,
renewable energy sources.

The 'Stop Esso' group insist: "We need to send a clear message to Esso and
President Bush: the world is not going to stand by while you wreck our
climate." Circulation, Colin Dale, Craig Richards, Dan & Jon Kahuna, Freq
Nasty, Plump DJs, Rocky, Stanton Warriors and Terry Francis are also set to
play Fabric's 'Stop Esso' night.

The event hopes to raise awareness for the 'Stop Esso' campaign which was
the backing and support of Greenpeace and Friends Of The Earth.

oh the mighty, mighty New Order. How jealous I am that they're playing in
the US and not in the UK (apart from one secret gig in Liverpool). Their new
album is a work of genius. The collaboration with Bobby Gillespie could have
come from Primal Scream's Xtrmntr (if any of you don't own this album I urge
you to get one now) but with New Order's trademark beats, bass and melodies.

When Joy Division came to an end New Order did indeed say that they would
never play JD material ever again. I was at a few of their earliest gigs
(most notably the much bootlegged Reading Uni) and they played In a Lonely
Place and Ceremony at this point. However I'm sure didn't play any JD stuff
until the tour immediately prior to the Manchester Arena and Alexander
Palace shows a couple of years back. That tour was, I think, around 1994/5.
Since then their drum'n'bass and techno versions of old JD tracks have
become highlights of their sets.

I may be wrong about this, but having seen them on at least one date of
every UK tour since they started, I can only go on my own memory. And as an
old git, my memory ain't what it used to be! :-)

Did any of you see Moby taking notes when New Order were on?

i think that the number of protests like these going on is attempting to
make clear to the "powers that be" that a whole lot of people, from numerous
nations, just don't agree with what Bush, etc. is doing, as far as their
actions are concerned that will likely, if not definitely, affect the
environment.

the New Power Project, the one Moby's in, and this one, Stop Esso, are just
trying to make it even more clear to the "powers that be."

i think that all one really needs is to have a very vague idea of what might
happen to the environment, take notice that many environmental organizations
are extremely concerned and are protesting, and of course be concerned about
protecting the environment, and i think those alone are sufficient enough to
go ahead with publicizing protests already in progress as best a celebrity
can and is able to.

i don't really do much of my own research about environmental concerns, but
for some of the environmental organizations that are online, like Save
Biogems, Panda.org (WWF), and the Environmental Defense Action Network, for
examples, i just let them send me e-mail when something's up that they're
concerned about, so that i personally can look over what they're concerned
about and send mail to my Senator, Representative, or whoever, and these
e-mail notifications that i get are a lot like the (innacurately portrayed)
"uninformed" artists helping out with save-the-environment campaigns that
are otherwise already in progress, by those whom do know what they're
talking about...

So now Moby is an uninformed artist?  It seems highly critical to claim that
they are all uninformed.  For all we know they supported and researched
stuff like this even before they became famous.  But now because they are
famous they get noticed and can get more publicity for the cause they are
supporting. Or it could be just a publicity stunt to get themselves back
into the limelight.  Whatever the reason is at least they have the balls to
go out and publicly speak up/out for something.  As I have mentioned before
on this list it was funny how fast some people turned against Moby for
expresssing his opinion on the whole election / Ralph Nader situation.  And
it is not suprising that Moby would publicly go against Bush because he
stated even during the election that Bush's environmental policies were bad.

oakey is in the guiness world book of records; the first DJ to ever make 1
million dollars in 1 year from just playing gigs (this doensnt include
production work, just spinning records).... That's kind of his claim to
fame...

he's also listed in the Hard Rock Hotel in Vegas, since they inducted him
into the Hard Rock Hall of Fame...

at the electronic music festival earlier this year in san diego, his set
wasnt that great.  he had some guy come out and put the needle to the record
[for his set] and all oakey did was wave and smile to the crowd. i am not
sure if he was drunk or whatever, but that was a dissapointment.  but more
recently, his two shows in NJ [for area:one]  were really good.

no - he's definitely informed in some areas - knee jerk in others. as he

it was a sweeping statement - as most word bites are. Although I would
hazard a guess that, having interviewed and spent time with many of the
artists involved in these projects, most are informed by similar word bites.

nope, too cynical. i'd say that human beings of all persuasions are easily
persuaded by passing band wagons. this isn't to say that eco concerns don't
offer a worthy band wagon. however i think we should ask the question of how
much good these events really do. are there more powerful ways to
demonstrate than putting your name on a bill? does it have to be showbiz?

I don't think any of this takes balls. moby hardly lay down in front of
tank or stopped a passing bullet for his beliefs. he did suggest that he
would leave the US if bush got in - which was a rash statement which no one
should reasonably hold him to.
no, what it takes is an active interest rather than balls.

i sometimes wonder whether some of these events are all about 'giving your
conscience the night off'.

Not arguing with his popularity... however, I wonder how many big name DJs
have been able to lay similar claims to income, but decided not to disclose
for fear of the taxman! :)

First off, no that is not "all one really needs", an informed decision about
any opinion you form is always necessary, otherwise its nothing but
conjecture.  When one REALLY starts to delve into the science behind "global
warming" you find that there is very little evidence to show humans have a
significant effect on global environment, and that reports and scientists
who do make such claims are fundamentally flawed, politically motivated, or
just plain incompetent.  In truth its been completely blown out of
proportion by the media and environmentalists.  Second, the simple fact that
there are numerous protestors in numerous countries is an absurd standard
for supporting them or even giving them creedence--in the US there are
perhaps just as many if not MORE protestors against other hotbutton issues
such as anti-choice christians rallying against abortion.  Does this mean
that their numbers constitute a valid reason to join up with them?  No way
in hell would I ever do so.
