Yeah, I have been to the doctor quite a few times trying to fix this trick
knee of mine.
"The relationship between an artist and his audience is intimate, but it's
also one-way. You feel close to him. Too many people have this imaginary
marriage between themselves and their idol. They hold the idol responsible
for upholding their (imagined) mutual point of view, because they have no
other external affirmation of their belief or moral. They then feel betrayal
when the idol/artist changes their minds, or behaves in a manner that
contradicts the (imagined) contract between the artist and fan."
I could not agree with you more.
Currently I am listening to "Living" which happens to be my favorite song of
Moby's. So if I were to make a video for this song I would start the video
showing a battle. In this battle a soldier is killed. Then I would show
the parents of this soldier at his funeral. Now they are at home going
through old photos. From here the video would go through this soldier's
life starting with his birth ending with the parent's bidding him farewell
as he leaves dressed in his military uniform on his way to war.

That's a good one. I can see that with slow fades from scene to scene, and a
haunting silhoette of the the soldier's face showing superimposed over an
explosion, or a battlefield.
Here is yet another:
UHF
Since this song swings back and forth from a bright, sparkly piano line and
a subterranean postapocalyptic technological machinery thingy, I would make
this video entirely out of racing video game footage. I'd start with newer,
better graphics games and work my way backward towards Rad Racer for
Nintendo. Dark, night scenes for the machine parts of the song, bright,
sunny scenes for the piano line. Mixed near the end of the song. All would
be games where the view can be seen from behind the car, or a driver's
perspective. None of that Excitebike or Super Off-Road type overviews of a
course. (also R.C. Pro-Am, another no-no) Cruisin' USA, World, or Exotica,
Need For Speed, Ridge Racer, etc., would all be permissable. A self-portrait
of Moby could perhaps make a cameo, like waving the start/finish flags or
something.
This could also be video remixed for Next Is The E.

Hello everybody!
=20
The next couple of days I'm going to write some reviews of remixes Moby =
did for other artists.
Moby did so many remixes for so many artists over the last couple of =
years, so I'm going to
review the ones that I have in my collection. I've bought them very =
recently. So the great thing is,=20
I think all of these remixes are still available, no obscure limited =
promo 12" remixes or stuff like=20
that. No, just (I think) not so widely known remixes that you can order =
at your favourite record=20
shop or the internet. =20
Oh, the _??_ indicates that I have no idea whether they're still =
available...(mostly the 12" versions)
=20
So, here goes.....
=20
Let's start with the, in my opinion, best Moby remixes I have: the =
Fractal Zoom remixes.
Available as: FRACTAL ZOOM [Brian Eno, 1992] US CD, Opal/Warner Bros, 9 =
40539-2
?? FRACTAL ZOOM [Brian Eno, 1992] UK 12", Opal/WEA, W0116T
?? FRACTAL ZOOM [Brian Eno, 1992] US 12", WEA, 9-40539-0
=20
The CD has 12 tracks of which 7 are moby remixes(!) The first Moby mix =
is track 2, the=20
[Mary's Birthday Edit 3:49] It's the most commercial mix on the disc. It =
starts off with a nice bright=20
piano tune. Then after about one measure the beat, bassline, synths, and =
little bongo drums like the ones used in ATINITBL (melodic mix) all =
together kick in, before you've had a chance to get familiar=20
with the piano tune. Then also too soon, the sampled voices start to =
sing.=20
These are the main reasons why I like the full version on track 12 =
[Mary's Birthday Mix 7:07] better.
The vocals are not like the original vocoder-deformed, but are normally =
sung, which goes best with this mix I think. It is a very "rich" mix, =
rich in samples and in different instruments. My general description=20
of the mix would be that it has the moody, atmospheric feeling of Go =
combined with the bright piano sound of Next Is The E.
=20
The next mix is on track 3, the [Up River mix 8:07] It starts with =
ambient synths and vocoder
vocals, then after about 30 secs there's a bongo drum solo and then the =
beat starts. The whole
mix has a typical Voodoo Child sound. I think this is due to the fact =
that this mix includes=20
exactly the same synth-sample Moby uses at the start of his song Voodoo =
Child [Poor In NY Mix]
=20
Track 6 is the [Naive Mix I 5:24] Very atmospheric melodic trance with =
the same strings Moby uses
in Go. Moby kept the original vocoder vocals in this mix, which gives it =
a dreamy tone. This mix also
includes the same bongo drum sound as the mixes above, only with a bit =
more reverb. The mix has
no hi-hats or other drums besides the bongo and the beat, which makes it =
repetitive melodic trance
that I can only compare with the melodic mix of ATINITBL I mentioned =
before. A great mix for the "sun
peaking over the hills in the middle of summer" kind of mood!
=20
Track 8: [Naive Mix II 5:55] Unlike the Naive Mix I this mix starts =
with hi-hats, all sorts of drums a
bassline and a beat. A creepy sounding synth in the beginning sets the =
tone for the rest of the mix.
I think this mix is called Naive Mix II, because it includes some =
samples that are also used in Mix I.
This mix is more for the "dark, threatening clouds moving over the city" =
kind of mood....
=20
And now for the strangest mix on the CD: track 9 [Landed Mix 5:50] This =
is 'wallpaper music' the pu-
rest form of ambient. A base of a dark, low synth carpet, from which =
every now and then bubbles of
sound emerge. A very abstract description, but I know no other way to =
put it....really weird. It's the
type of music that, when you walk into a room, you don't really hear. =
But when it suddenly stops you
think it's awfully quiet.........like I said, weird......
=20
Then comes the [Bucolic Mix 4:44] on track 10. Also ambient music with =
bubbles of sound emerging
from a low synth carpet, but louder and with more sounds. There's a =
bright piano twinkle on the back-ground and some sampled vocals (no =
vocoder). After about 4 minutes the track slowly starts to die=20
away into silence. A nice mix.
=20
The last track (12) is the [Mary's Birthday Mix 7:07] which is the same =
as the edited version on track 2, but has more of a structure. It slowly =
evolves, rather than the edited version, where you get thrown into=20
a porridge of all the instruments and vocals at once. I love this mix!

Normally I would snip the middle of that, but it was too funny.
However, you covered only two Paula Abdul videos. A pity. Somehow, that "Cold
Hearted Snake" video has to get in there - you know, all of those people
slithering around the piping frames in some sort of warehouse? Also, drag
racing one was "Rush"; incidentally, a bit part in "Forever Your Girl" was the
first job of the most current Frodo, for all of your Tolkien fans. Kind of
scary, eh? Actually, it's probably more frightening that I know this much
about Paula Abdul's videos. It's a sign of the times.
I'll have to give the video idea some thought in my noon class. I think it
would be really funny to have just a bunch of audition tapes set to "Bodyrock,"
with occasional shots of Moby looked stunned and somewhat worried. Yup,
definitely.
