what about mixing.  you cant' do it dude.  anyone can put a needle on a
record, but who is there to search the friggin planet for that one records
that will mix for 2 min. with the other record, but only if you cut the
snare at the right time and drop the bassline just a little delayed to the
mids.. Come on guys, when you can do it, then nock it. It's as much an
artform as anything.  What about skydiving, artform?  Anyone can fall out of
a plain, like anyone can play a record.  But who can soar throught he
atmosphere and feel the breath of God with more intesity than a truly
skilled skydiver.  Maybe only a DJ....

DJs who insist that they are automatically artists or musicians are
full of themselves. Everyone's an artist these days, as if there was
shame in not being one.

And I am a hobbyist DJ... I'm on a DJ mailing list, and when this
topic has surfaced (repeatedly), the majority of the list would agree
that a standard DJ is not an artist.

okay, here's my 2 cents...
i agree with what john said about turntablists like coldcut, kid koala,
etc. that's totally using the decks as instruments. kk's "drunken trumpet"
is a prime example. makes the scratching sound like a damn horn part. it's
beauty.
otherwise, dj's can be musicians beyond their dj'ing, but dj'ing in-and-of
itself does not make them musicians. musical knowledge can help a hell of
a lot, but math and timing can cover it too. there's a definite art form
to it (if they're any good), but the basic dj'ing is just being the
selecter. (if you're blinking or feeling argumentative about that one,
learn yer roots. it's 'cause of jamaica that we've got all this. bamboo
fence and curry goat. the roots of raves).
okay, i'll stop now before i go into a total roots tyrade.

I'm watching Much Music's Electric Circus, and the DJ dropped a drum
'n' bass mix of "Go". Not just another track with those Twin Peaks
chords, but with the vocal samples and such. The camera was on the
label of the record before she threw it, but I didn't notice much
except that it looked like a white label...

me his cockroaches living in his apartment are the current hired techs who
run the site..they have been on strike for the past few days and stopped
