I've been having this debate with a few people, and I figured the people of
mobility would have plenty to say about this. The question is:

Should DJ's be considered musicians?

My theory is no, because the term musicians should be synomous with artist.
Moby is a musician, no doubt, who also occasionally DJ's.

Musicians create something new out of their own minds and resources. DJ's
just take what is already created and essentially glue it together. It's
like getting a craft set with all the materials and instructions and then
putting it together. That does not qualify as art, but as a craft. Two
seperate things.

And this in no way is to put down DJ's. I have tremendous respect for DJ's.
They have an immensly cool skill and it does take talent. But it does not
fall under my definition of artist.

Anyone have thoughts on this one?

Hey all-
Very interesting question- I know I will be attacked. So be it.
I would most certainly not classify a DJ as a musician. Take away the records and there isn't a whole lot they can do with their coffins alone. On the other hand, say they run an 808, 303, 606, etc... then there is some chance for a truly original song or beat to be born. But that's as close as it gets.
As I was raised to play classical music on several intsruments, I was lucky enough to learn "how to drop the one and twos" in college from a friend of mine. DJing tickles a different part of your brain than playing the piano, guitar, sax, etc. I would also venture to say that it is picked up alot more easily, due to being devoid of theory.
djs please don't hate me
