I was born and lived in NY most of my life but live in Chicago now. I would
love to hang out with Moby, he's so smart! I wonder if people flock around
Moby's place like they did Madonna's when she had an apartment in Chelsea?
That reminds me, does anyone know why Moby and Madonna are never mentioned
together ever? They came up, the same as myself, in the same clubs and so
forth. Just curious about that.

Subject: (mobility)Moby on commercials
I mentioned this last year, cause this discussion about selling out keeps
coming up, but there are definately somethings that Moby has no knowledge
about till after the fact.
In a video interview he said he was watching TV at a friend's house when a
commercial (from 1999) for "Dharma & Greg" (on ABC) came on with Jenna Elfman
dancing to "Bodyrock". Moby didn't even know who the dancing woman was &
(jokingly) wondered if he was having some weird flashback - he couldn't
believe his song was on this commercial.
I think that this whole discussion just shows what a hard decision it really
is when you do have a strong passionate conscience, but at the same time you
have the ability to decide over having access to a lot of money and you're
suddenly more in the public eye than ever expected after such a
badly-accepted album like "Animal Rights".
And yeah, lets go back to the music...I'm gonna go crank up some "Come On
Baby"...and Rob, enjoy your trip! Peru is lovely this time of year...

How is a personal friendship even in anyway related to "selling out"?
Sometimes people just grow apart, perhaps this "friend" of his turned into
an asshole. There could be a million fucking reasons why they "broke up",
but none of them lead to "selling out".
Look people, if you don't like Moby anymore, quit this fucking list, stop
listening to his music, or just don't bring your bitching here for the rest
of us to read. Better yet, next time someone else posts crap like this,
please, everyone just ignore it and it will go away.

Greetings from a mobility newcomer,
Having lurked on this list for about a week now and gotten a general feel fo=
r=20
things, I thought I'd take the plunge and submit my first mailing. =A0I'm=20
starting off with this thread because, although I missed out on the post tha=
t=20
started it, it seems like a natural way to introduce myself. =A0My name is=20
Carrie, I'm 25, and I am a "Play"-er. ;-) I have recently begun shuffling=20
off the last vestiges of my ignorance to see the light of the One True Way=20
that is Moby (said very tongue-in-cheek, though he would make a nice monk=20
with that bald little head, wouldn't he?)
I first heard of Moby around the time of Everything is Wrong; back in those=20
days I subscribed to both Rolling Stone and Spin, and EIW topped most of the=
=20
critics' polls. =A0I had also seen the name "Voodoo Child" on the dance musi=
c=20
charts published in Rolling Stone, but it wasn't until the "Play" era, when=20=
I=20
began to receive my Moby education, that I realized they were actually the=20
same artist. =A0In the summer of '95 I took a cosmology course in summer=20
school, and one of my fellow students was a guy who was heavily into dance=20
music; he claimed his CD collection numbered in the thosuands. =A0He was alw=
ays=20
touting the superiority of electronica over "anything with guitars in it"; h=
e=20
was also a big proponent of Moby's, however, so if I'd been less ignorant I=20
would've pointed out the contradiction. =A0He always made it a point to cite=
my=20
favorite band, R.E.M., as examples of what he considered "rock n' roll=20
shite," so just to spite him I made it a point to avoid Moby. =A0It was a go=
od=20
example of cutting your nose off to spite your face, because little did I=20
know I was hurting myself far more than my wayward classmate. =A0And back th=
en,=20
despite being a regular club goer, I also have to admit to being a big of a=20
guitar-rock snob. =A0Oh, the perils of being young and stupid!
Also, I don't know if it was because of Moby's choice of hairstyle or what,=20
but for some reason I consistently confused him with Orb, and therefore with=
=20
Orbital as well. =A0To me at the time the dance music world was the Amazonia=
n=20
rainforest of genres, with so many diverse life forms it was virtually=20
impossible to keep track of them all; this is still true to a certain extent=
.=20
=A0I wasn't even sure if Moby was a group or just a guy, and I didn't take t=
he=20
time to find out. =A0It wasn't until over four years later I discovered, muc=
h=20
to my chagrin, just what I'd been missing.
So... that brings us to Play. =A0I think the first single I heard was probab=
ly=20
"Bodyrock," and I honestly can't tell you if I first heard it in a commercia=
l=20
or on the alternative radio station that premiered in my little hick town=20
around the same time. =A0I also heard "Natural Blues" and was intrigued by t=
he=20
apparent juxtaposition of dance music with the blues. =A0But in music, as in=
=20
most areas of my life, I am a hard-boiled skeptic (and a cheapskate besides)=
;=20
my rule is unless I like at least three singles from an album, I ain't buyin=
'=20
it. =A0But once I heard "Porcelain," I was sold. =A0Well, not entirely.. the=
=20
length of the album, with 18 tracks, along with the plethora of alternate=20
mixes, meant it'd be easier to buy the actual CD than to try my patience by=20
attempting to download the whole album via Napster.
When I first popped Play into my CD player, my initial impression of it can=20
be summed up with one word: "breathtaking." =A0The mental images painted by=20=
the=20
soundscapes Moby created were unlike anything I'd ever experienced. =A0For m=
e=20
it's one of those rare albums that's inspired me in the truest sense of the=20
word; listening to it I've had visions of scenes or sequences previously=20
unwritten in my screenplays, or I've felt compelled to write new scenarios=20
based on the mental images the songs have conveyed. =A0And let me just say,=20=
in=20
case you were wondering, all this has occurred without the use of drugs :-)
But lest you count me as just another bandwagoner, since discovering Play I=20
have gone on to delve into Moby's previous recordings, and I am happy to=20
report I have not been disappointed. =A0I was delighted to find his work is=20
just as conducive to booty-shaking and bile-spewing as it is to meditation.=20
=A0I've realized the wide spectrum of emotions electronica can convey, and s=
o=20
for me Moby has become a gateway artist, the marijuana of dance musicians,=20
because in discovering his work I've also been encouraged to explore a genre=
=20
I'd previously neglected. =A0I am continually amazed (and somewhat intimidat=
ed)=20
by the breadth and variety of artists out there... looks like I have my work=
=20
cut out for me!
I look forward to discovering more of Moby's music; just in the past week,=20
from reading your posts (and with the help of Napster), I've been able to=20
unearth numerous little-known gems. And after seeing MTV2's broadcast of th=
e=20
concert from Edinburgh, I am kicking myself for not making the 2.5-hour=20
journey from my shel-turd little hamlet to see Moby's gig in Raleigh-Durham;=
=20
the guy goes on the road for 19 months and I don't get a clue until the last=
=20
show of the entire tour. Ahh well; live and learn I guess.
So, if you've stuck with me this far, you have my gratitude and admiration.=20
=A0I'll close with this final plea: don't hate me because I'm a newbie!
