Subject: RE: (mobility) I need help understanding something or other?
am I the only one who honestly doesn't care what moby's music is used to
advertised?
it is the music I believe in. man ;-)
I don't care much for his beliefs (they are nice ideas in this fucked up
world) but it would take a lot more to influence me than some essays inside
his album. (if he totally believed in these beliefs would he be involved in
such a wasteful and disposable industry like the music industry?, I don't
think so!)
it is the music that he creates that can move me to tears, make me dance,
make me fall in love, remember old friends and make new ones...
this is the whole point of music, not who can be the biggest fan by
mindlessly following every passing trend and every throwaway statement of
the great man himself (I'm a better vegan than you, I think moby has sold
out more than you, oh my god moby has done a commercial for CK... they sell
perfume... the world is going to end!!!)
I am probably going to get flamed for this or else it will just pass into
nothing either way I don't care, I cant change how I feel...
Geoffrey Sproule
(the whole idea of selling out was invented by unsuccessful artists to make
successful artist less successful. and the sad thing the amount of people
who actually use is as a valid argument against someone )
On this whole thing about who is using Moby's music. Well if you are going
to sit there and be mad at Moby for allowing his music to be used for a CK
commercial, you cannot stop there. You need to start tracking down every
other company that has used his music and start to see where they have
invested their money. You will see that they invest money in things that
would be deviant to Moby's beliefs.

Subject: Re: (mobility) first moby exp
OK, so given all of the "I've been a fan longer than you bullshit" it's
almost embarrassing to admit that I first heard Moby in 1991. I was living
in Nottingham, England and hanging out with the DIY Soundsystem. DJ Digs, or
maybe DJ Woosh, played 'Go' from the Mobility EP and I just fell for it.
What added to the experience was that we were all dancing in the middle of
the Derbyshire Dales (miles and miles of untouched, open countryside) and it
was 6am. This is what us old people used to do. We called it raving!!!
As far as I'm concerned the fact that I'm old enough to have experienced
this doesn't make me better than any of the people who only discovered Moby
recently. I'm just lucky. I was also lucky enough when I was young to see
Joy Division live, Iggy Pop with David Bowie playing keyboards, The Sex
Pistols, I ran away from home at 13 to follow The Clash, and the Siouxsie
and the Banshees. More recently I've seen The Prodigy all over the world,
been on tour with Orbital, and danced myself stupid to Underworld... the
list is endless. The thing is many of you who have only recently discovered
Moby may also be into some local band, or underground artist who hardly
anyone else knows about now. And in ten years time when they're world famous
it won't make you any better than the new fans. All it will mean is that
you've known the passion of music. And that same passion which you felt ten
years pervious, is touching a new generation now. Great music should
transcend all of that elitist crap because great music speaks to everyone -
regardless of age or experience.
Similarly it doesn't matter if you are old enough to have heard Moby's early
stuff when it first came out but only discovered him through 'Play'. If only
that one record moves you from his entire catalogue, then at least he has
moved you. How many records are released each week that do nothing for you
at all. Don't even make you angry. Music that just exists.
I first became a music journalist because I was lucky enough to hear some
great but obscure music which I wanted to share with other people. I didn't
want to keep it to myself. I'm a crap DJ so that was out of the question so
I started writing about music instead. I've written a number of first
interviews with artists who are now well known. That these artists are no
longer 'my little secret' makes me very happy.
That all for now. I'm off to listen to Mark B and BLade's 'The Unknown'
album (UK Hip hop) before going out to hear Rae and Christian DJing. Last
night I was at London drum'n'bass club Movement's 4th birthday. Life is
good.
