and about this who's the real fan etc- conversation i'd like to say that
it reminds me of quite frustrating feeling when i'm trying to tell about
something i truly and deeply am interested, sort of passion, be the task
moby or duchamp or leguin f.e. , and then the one i'm talking with drops
me down just by taking the verbs love and like into somewhat much more
meaningless atmosphere, where people are supposed to be positive and
thus love and like every nice little thing around. while my interests stay
at the same f.e. passionate =) level, the converstation looses its point.
usually it feels like it's kind of humiliation to be really interested
about something. and at least in finland informationsociety means this
situation where the information is important no matter what it contains.
thus to be interested on few things makes the other one uncomfortable,
because then the slice of total mass of information is not wide, but deep.
but of course, when the slice is wide one is very able to like and love vast
amount of things. then the verbs love and like just have to mean different
level of concentration, intensity, and at least to me the conversation
turns if not impossible but frustrating.
those who also have passion over something, ability to be interested and
concentrate on something, have turned out to be friends that stay. so it's
not that people must share the same interests, but more like they have to
share the same ability to *have* interests. those persons don't smile
unsurely when the conversation goes into deeps, because they sort of
understand the possibility, the logic of what's going on.

Speaking of newbies and all.  A few years ago while I was in college a
friend of mine came up to me all excited asking me "Have you heard that new
band that just came out with that great song?!"  And I said what band?  What
song?  And she said that band that sings "Roll the bones".  And I was like,
you mean Rush?  And she said yeah!  That's is the new band.  After I picked
my jaw up from the floor I said, "they aren't new."  "They have been
together for about 20 years" at that time at least.  After I finally
convinced her that they were not new by showing her all of the Rush cd's I
had, I thought to myself, "How could she not have known Rush had been around
for nearly 20 years?!"

10 years ago I started listening to the Cherry Poppin Daddies.  They put out
an album called "Ferociously Stoned" and in my opinion it was their best.
Anyway, when I would go out with my friends and we would be riding in my
car, I would play the "Daddies".  My friends were all like what is this
shit?  Turn it off!  7 years later when they released "Zoot suit riot" all
my my friends thought Wow this new band is great!  Talk about pissing me
off!  Not because they were newbie fans, but because 7 years earlier I had
tried to expose them to the "daddies" and they hated them.  To make things
even worse the new album only had like 4 different songs on it.

So have any of you all had a similiar experience of a new Moby fan coming up
and saying, "Have you heard of that great new album by that new guy Moby?".

I was that person!  But not for long.  I heard "Porcelain" on the local
college radio station and phoned to see who it was (they had a habit of
playing 10 songs and never telling you).  I went to buy "Play" and found out
how many other CD's were there and so forth.  Whenever I  recommend Moby, I
ask if the person has heard him and give a brief summary if they have not.
