there is a difference between selling out and
becoming popular. when all you do is make music
that the masses want to hear and do everything
you can to make money off of your music, then you
have sold out. while i understand that the
rights being sold for his music are his record
label's idea, i don't think moby should have
taken that step. however, he hasn't sold out
completely as he still makes music that he likes,
not what other people want to hear. if your
music that you made for yourself (which he did
with play) becomes popular, that is a much
different scenario.
> What do you think is an appropriate way for him
> to get his music out to the masses?
his reputation is such that he doesn't need more
promotion, nor if he is doing it to get by on his
conservative, vegan ways, does he need an assload
of money to do as such. he was popular enough
prior to play, now he's uber-popular. good for
him. welcome to the ranks of the backstreet
aguilera n'sync bizkit machine.
> Or do you think that you should be the only

you can shove this statement up your ass. i
don't need this kind of condescension for not
agreeing with his marketing of his music. i
think those who truly appreciate the music should
listen to it, not every god forsaken miserable
little teeny bopper scrub out there who only like
bodyrock and that song with the chick from no
doubt (i know it's gwen). they listen to moby
because currently it's cool, and it cheapens it
for me when i have to hear it in walmart and
jcpenney and in the fucking mall. i lose that
intimate relationship i once had with the music.
> Maybe he should have stayed "Underground" hmmm?
not underground, but certainly not feed off of
the corporate machine and the short attention of
the popular wannabe crowd. there are people who
would appreciate his music for the music itself,
not for his newfound icon status.
> He is a musician. It is his job to get his

in my humble opinion, the point of the musician
is to bring the music forth and be able to
continue making music with a moderate salary.
not get millions of dollars by selling the music
every which way to the end of eternity and using
horrible marketing schemes (can we say the
b-sides and two track singles?) to bleed every
cent out of the consumer to hear music. getting
your music played everywhere cheapens it for fans
like me, as i've said before.

i'll never bitch about a person not hitting it
big or getting the recognition they deserve. i
only recommend music i enjoy to other people in
the hopes that they like it to. i only bitch
when they are obviously whoring themselves out
for the money and not putting that made money to
good use besides filling up v2's pocketbook.

Alright, I guess I have to let you know what's going on.... I am not
God and I never thought of myself as such. But, like I stated before - I'm
not sure there IS a God. I am just kidding around, and if you can't take a
joke and laugh a little, then that's your problem and not mine.
I will not let this person cool off. He is on a Moby mailing list and
saying that Moby doesn't have to win. That is a blatant disregard for the
nature of the list. MOBY IS THE GREATEST and he should win. He is just
trying to get a rise out of people and I guess it worked in my case. I
usually don't let things get to me (I didn't let that OTHER ignorant moron
kept saying that Moby was gay and that he screwed animals) but this person
just deserves a good kick in the nuts. If you disagree, then SO BE IT!

Subject: RE: (mobility) Moby a sellout?!!
Although I do not agree with you DJ Pagan, I do know where you are coming
from. But my thoughts are these. It is obvious to me that Moby is an
extremely talented artist who deserves everything that he gets. That
includes money. Where N'Sync and brittany and most other copycat pop bands
who try to emulate someone else fail in the long run Moby as already
succeded. So I do predict that there will be new artists who will appear
trying to emulate Moby. Moby, in my opinion, has brought his music into our
hearts, homes, minds, and spirit. What Moby has accomplished is the fact
that he hasn't gone mainstream, mainstream has come to him. Do you know
what I mean? So yes, teeny boppers are listening to his music not yet aware
of its power or meaning. Yes they may never become aware of it. Why is it
such an afront to you? I am not trying to be critical I am just curious.
Anyway, I have to get back to doing something productive today.

surprisingly, yes! my problem has never been
with moby becoming popular, it has been with (a)
how he has chosen to publicize play by selling
every song on it for commercials (not a bad idea,
but i hear it everywhere now) and (b) the
horrible marketing schemes he has allowed v2 to
do with his music. he could have stopped some of
this, but he 'wanted to make his record company
happy' and they are walking all over him.

because these same people start claiming to be
fans and try to relate to me through moby in some
way that i don't particularly care for. because
they don't appreciate the songs for what they
are, they constantly bastardize the songs and
their meanings, making them into party tunes and
stuff they go nuts over in shopping malls.
because they don't understand moby, nor his life,
and therefore cannot understand his music and my
deep appreciation with it. i feel the same way
that when listening to a piece by rachmaninov and
experiencing the spectrum of feelings and
somebody else says, 'i hate classical' or 'hey,
that was in shine, wasn't it?'. it bugs me, it
bugs me to no end because it cheapens the
experience for me.

Yes, I know, that title is pissing people off. But I
think Moby has actually sold out in a good way. I
mean, he still has creative control over his music. He
still records in his bedroom. He just collaborates
with Gwen and Elton and stuff. And has his music in
every commercial ever made. Everybody is hearing the
guy's music, but he's still a bedroom boffin ;)
I don't think theres need for me to elaborate really.
