how offended am i... and how sad is it that the artist who has been able to
make me think and feel and move more than any other is arousing in other
people some sense of competition. when i listen to moby and just weep, when
i look up at him on the stage and feel the body heat of the strangers next
to me who are my friends and companions for the evening- joined together by
our common love and admiration for the same glorious musician and thinker-
it does not cross my mind that perhaps i am not a "true" or "fully matured"
moby fan. the audacity that some of you must have to claim superiority is
outright appalling. i just feel like my situation- that of being captivated
by this man who brings me so much joy and truth- is being belittled because
i wasn't born in 1980, and i wasn't exposed to music for a lot of my life. i
guess, then, that i am not capable of loving his art if i have not been
familiar with it since i was 10. maybe i am taking this a little too
personally, but... moby and his music happen to be deeply personal parts of
my life. true constants, and a source of hope. i thought that this listserv
would allow me to engage with people who feel the same way i do. but i'm
starting to wonder if it isn't just an outlet for one-up-manship.

It is true that Moby is humble and charming and very, VERY intelligent. As
for a shrunken ego, I think not. I cannot imagine a man who can perform
like he does as having a diminished ego. He is also quite opinionated, not
a sign of egolessness. Naturally, he is aware of the many paths, the
dharma, and takes Christ as his teacher. He gives of himself most
graciously, and I adore him. Moby is a genuinely beautiful person with a
genuinely human ego, my friend. But maybe it's just semantics, eh? A.

of course it doesn't cross your mind... you
haven't been a fan that long. i've seen too many
people come on this listserve and spout off at
how "cool" moby is and leave. you never went
through the part when most of his fans abandoned
him after animal rights, or how people first
began to call him a sell out with i like to
score. it's hard to even begin to explain what
moby fans have been through when people begin as
fans during the highest point in his career.
i commend your depiction of your fandom above
though, that makes me feel good about you being a
fan. you are about it for the man *and* the
music, which is what fandom is about. moby isn't
a shallow person... he's a beautiful man who has
finally reached his dream: making music.

i don't claim superiority, only experience over
you. that means a lot. your fandom has not yet
stood the test of time, where so many people
suddenly wake up one day and realize that moby
wasn't all that great and that they are moving on
to the next fad. you're getting there, and your
composure seems true. welcome to fandom, now
hold on tight.

listservs in theory are supposed to follow this
practice. listservs in reality amount to a lot
of trolling, one-up-manship, useless information,
and immaturity. welcome to the internet.
but remember that there are a few of us 'decent'
folks out there. ::smile::

Oh come on, bigamy is three syllables. That's over half the hand.
I apologize to all the real Moby fans, by the way, for actually responding to
the immature posts, but sometimes it's so easy, I just can't resist.
Did any lucky person get tickets to the KROQ Acoustic Christmas show? Moby
is performing both nights, but the damn thing sold out in 10 minutes and Ebay
is a bit much.
