Well, mate, toss that boomerang and ride that 'roo down to the watering
hole, gotta say "g'day, mate" to the missus :)
Seriously though, Moby PRESENTED awards twice I think. The only time I saw
him, he came out with some R&B artist named "Pink". He proceeded to place a
Gore/Liebermann bumpersticker on the podium(mysteriously it disappeared
after the camera shot away to the winners.) I forget which award he
presented, it really doesn't matter when your talking about MTV, especially
their own awards show, MTV in the US anyway, is so vapid and trite it makes
Entertainment Weekly look like a Masterpiece Theatre epic. He was also
nominated, I believe for the Porcelain video for best male video category(I
can see the gears of the nominee committee working right now... Gee that
Moby guy is getting pretty good press, not to mention its a platinum album,
despite the fact that he has gotten ZERO mainstream exposure... Why not
nominate Moby? But what video? Oh well, let's just pick the most recent
one, our demographic (whose attention span is approximately 2 minutes and 23
seconds, perhaps explaining why NSYNC is so popular) will have an easy time
remebering it...). His co-presenter, Pink, seemed rather put off by him,
she said, "I'd vote for Jim Carry myself...".
In truth, look at the history of pop--try watching a "classic" VMA show, 5,
10 years ago, now how many of them are still around? The VAST MAJORITY of
these people are one-hit wonders, whose careers have a life span of about
2.5 albums. It happened to Tiffany, Debbie Gibson, it will happen to Spears
and Aguillara(sp?). It happened to Color Me Bad and New Kids on the Block,
it will happen to NSYNC and Backstreet Boys. I hope they cash in on their
fleeting success and invest wisely, because mediocrity doesn't last, only
real talent stands the test of time, that is why moby, though not a HUGE
success has made a very decent living for 15 years and will continue to do
so for the rest of his life, if he so chooses. I really can't blame the
record companies who put this crap out, they're just in it to make money,
nor can I blame the "artists", cashing in on success is okay too, and they
are blameless for their lack of talent. Who I blame are their legions of
fans who obviously haven't matured past the 7th grade, both in taste and
intellect. Yes, they are kids, but does that mean they have to necessarily
be tone-deaf and stupid as well? When I was in the 7th grade, I was
listening to Mozart, Ravel, Pucchini, yes, I liked some popular music,
classic rock and the like, but my tastes had refined at that age, why
haven't most other peoples?
Oh well, enough bitching...
Correct me if I'm wrong, but has Moby made more videos off of Play
(including alternate animated videos) than all his other albums combined? I
still can't believe that Play has so much steam after almost 18 months!
Hey, I always wanted to know, in America there is this Auzzie beer called
Fosters. Their commercials are funny little Auzzie "dictionary meanings".
For instance, someone throws a boomerang at a gentleman sitting near the TV
in a bar, the gentleman, unphased turns the channel, and a voice over says,
"remote control" in an Auzzie accent. Then it shows a picture of the
Fosters can and the voice over again says, "beer", "Fosters, Australian for
bear". In another one, a stout woman is arm wrestling her husband, she wins
and the ref says, "right, looks like your mother-in-law gets to stay at your
house, mate", then the voice over says, "marriage counselor". I don't
remember any of the other right now, but its a pretty good ad campaign.
Do these commercials actually play in Australia too? Is Fosters a very good
beer, the pride of Australia?

Actually, Bjork's video for 'All is Full of Love' won for Best Special
Effects and for Breakthrough Video. (yay! :)

Exactly what i was thinking too!! This is the "VIDEO" awards after all
isn't it?! I noticed from the website that most of the "professional"
categories weren't even televised (such as effects & breakthrough) which
is completely lame since they could cut out one or two of the bloated
performances and fit those categories in.
Ech. Anyway, this awards show was quite a lame, dragged out, embarrassing
spectacle. The director should be fired and the writers should be burned
at the stake... I fell lame for having watched it, but i only watched for
Moby.
And what the HELL was up with the way everyone is dressing?! They all
looked like frickin' fashion show rejects, like they picked up discarded
outfits off a stampeded runway! Where the hell is the STYLE? *I* dress
better... and have considerably less money than all of them. Although i
do have to say Moby looked spiffy. :)

Subject: RE: (mobility) i JUST MISSED Moby... (MTV AWARDS opening act)
To answer your question, I live in Central Pennsylvania also and I don't
think Moby's scheduled for this area so far on the tour. I think he's in
Philadelphia in the fall. Since I'm relatively new to the list, here's my
little schtick:
I first heard about and saw Moby in Latrobe PA last month at the Rolling
Rock Festival. Not knowing anything about him, I was not expecting
anything. I was totally blown away by his music. I really came to see the
Chili Peppers but Moby was by far the best performance of the six bands that
played at the festival. And it just goes to show you what a diverse group
of fans he touches. I'm 48 years old (a lot older than anyone on the posted
mailing list) and usually listen to classic rock. I felt the RHCP didn't
play with much emotion but were OK. Moby played with tremendous exuberance
and connected with the crowd both with his music and little philosophical
observations (I agree with him politically). I went out and bought PLAY and
SONGS 1993-1998 (at the same time, I bought an old Doors CD!) and haven't
stopped listening to them. My wife is an Oldies rocker and can't listen to
PLAY enough.
Two questions, since I'm new to his music and this list:
- - What would be another good Moby album to buy since I got the two above?
- - What other artists record music similar to Moby that I can buy (since I'm
just a classic rocker)? This is a tough question, I know, because PLAY
combines so many different music genres (hence Moby's appeal).
Chow for now,
Steve

All central pa people unite. Yeah I live about 40 seconds from the capital of
the great state of pa. I missed that concert but damn moby must go to Hershey
sometime in the near future. and another good CD to get would be everything
is wrong or animal rights. Eiw is more techno oriented, and AR is sort of
punk rock but still very good.
peace.

Weird man, that is EXACTLY what I was thinking at the time. I was getting all excited too. Eminem got enough damn awards. Oh well. Eminem won when Moby was presenting. I noticed Moby didn't shake his hand when he got on stage...hmmm. Moby looked pretty snazzy in his red suit. I was watching the pre-show and they'd have a big shot of the crowd and you could just zoom in on Moby because he really stood out in his suit. They mentioned that he got there by subway, that's so Mobyish. Good for him.
Well yeah, all in all it sucked. The hosts were not funny at all, it was painful. They were apparently having some technical dificilties too. Oh well, I wasn't expecting much anyway.
