I think the idea that such a statment is demeaning is completely absurd and
indicative of the inherant insecurity of "guilty" white liberals. The
statement "big-boned soul-chick" is completely objective and quite evocative
of an accurate image. Offense in this can only be derived from automated
stereotyping by the observer.

oh be careful. i always get my ass kicked for talking bad about moby.
the thing is i love his music and question his sudden over-exposure (in

i agree with you Xaq. I wish Moby wasn't so overexposed. I don't like the
commercial use of his tracks. I HATE that nike uses his music. I resent
that fact that this tour i'll see him with 3 or 4 thousand other people
instead of a club that holds 5 or 6 hundred like last year. I resent the
fact that one of my favorite musicians is almost considered mainstream and
gets lumped in with the likes of Kid Rock and Korn all the other alternative
stars that rolling rock and woodstock can toss on stage.
However, i also realize this is totally selfish of me and I remind myself
that at least the mainstream folks are getting a little bit better taste in
music.
Secretly, i still hope for a completely wild album like animal rights or end
of everything that will get rid of the teenyboppers who are going through a
moby phase. But if he stays mainstream and top 40, more power to him.

Subject: (mobility) Been a long time since I rock n' rolled............
So I decided to drop a line.......
Miss Tiffany from New Zealand here.......
Firstly, the whole "he said she said" (cant remember who said wott!!)
about Moby's live performances, I think the back-up soul singer was great at
the New Zealand concert. Personally I think that she sang along really well
and I much prefer to have a real life person singing to me rather than just
the samples playing, I like that it added more visuals to his performance,
and I think perhaps this is why Moby chose to have these people perform with
him, rather than just by himself. I guess we were lucky in NZ to have him
play TWIRFMR which I think was the highlight of the night, but the thing I
appreciated most was the fact that the songs off Play DIDDNT sound exactly
like the CD. He went accoustic for a couple of them and I loved the fact
that he chose to perform the songs in a different style.
This next bit really dosent have alot to do with Moby, Ive never met him but
the people who have say he is incredibly down-to-earth, and In many an
interview (including his NZ tv interview) he mentions that he has an almost
pathalogical low self esteem (as he put it).
Its about people (especially famous people) and their Ego's. Im sorry if
your not interested in this but I have a REALLY big problem with people
people who overly love themselves. (This is a warning if your not interested
in this topic) I just wanted to hear from anybody who has met a celebrity
that left you feeling a little intimadated and alot less admiring of them
because of their ego. I mean, sure, if your famous, your bound to feel
pretty good about yourself, but where is it that the confidence stops, and
the arrogance starts?. And why do alot of stars insist on only dating
beautiful/studley people? ( I know your answer..... COS THEY CAN!! heh
heh!) But I'll give you an example. Ive been talking to this guy on the
phone lately, who works on TV and stuff, he's not really a celebrity or
anything, but I can tell he's pretty darn keen on himself. He's constantly
asking what I look like, what size clothes I wear, what kind of clothes I
wear and subtley trying to find out how big my ass is (WTF???!!!) Yet he
complains cos the last girl he dated was this lovely model who was fried on
drugs and had absolutely NO personality. (please dont attack me, IM NOT
saying models are stupid and fried on drugs!!) Now I consider myself to be
a pretty girl, a size 10 or 12 (I think that means 8 or 10 in america) but I
couldnt be a model (unless they have an urgent need for 5 foot 3 people har
har!). We went out the other night on a date to see "Gladiator" (fantastic
movie by the way) but I guess because I wasnt the 200 foot megawoman he was
used to, I think he was a little disappointed. I have many friends, in all
shapes and sizes who are all beautiful people. My question is... what gives
these people and some celebrities these massive ego's and further more, how
does everyone feel about some stars which seem almost "untouchable".
This is why I praise such artists as Moby, who although talented and
attractive, also contain a sense of humility and take a more down-to-earth
approach to love and life.
Sorry If I bored you ..... But MAN, I DID warn you!! ;)
Tiffany.

i think a lot of it has to do with mass media. many people think that
these "beautiful" people actually exist. none of them do. can you say
MAKE-UP, COMPUTER IMAGING, LIGHTING, and DUCT TAPE boys and girls? models
are made in the studio.
of course a lot of what we find attractive comes from evolution, but i
won't get too deep into that here. the problem (if you see it as such) is
that humans have out-run evolution and can change things much faster than
they can adapt to those changes. plus, many people just watch too much
tv, but again, i won't get into that.
now that i said all that, i have to go get ready to dj at a fashion show
in a local mall, and no, i'm not kidding! HA!

Word. So every day I'm checking ticketmaster.com and they're still not even
listing Moby's tour on there. There are just five of his concerts on their
list. So anyone heard when tickets for the rest are going on sale? Should I
be looking somewhere else? I don't want to be busy one day and then find out
that that was the day and I blew my chance to see this tour.
(Incidentally, I'll be going to college near St. Louis, and Moby comes there
on the SAME DAY that the new Green Day AND the new Radiohead albums come out.
October 3, baby. I'm gonna be having a good day.)
Thanx,
Justin.

Subject: RE: (mobility) OT the moshing thing
Very very off-topic.

Just wanted to add my two cents. Opinions are
opinions. Maybe moshing is stupid to some, not to
others. Releasing energy is one thing, but when your
inflicting harm to others who are not involved, nor
interested, that is a serious violation to me. If I
go to a concert I'm not going to stand next to the pit
and complain if I get a bump to the noggin or
elsewhere. However, when some insane asshole (and yes
I mean that), decides to unleash his own pent up
aggression on parts of the crowd who are just standing
around minding their own business, that's criminal. I
wouldn't walk up to someone on the street and punch
them in the face. I find that most people who are
moshing are polite to others around them. They're not
trying to beat the poop out of someone who is just
standing next to them. If someone gets accidentally
bumped there's usually an apology. But there's always
one or 2 or more I spose at bigger concerts who aren't
slamming to the music but out to really hurt you.
>not everyone just wants to stand there and
>bob their heads and
>scream like teenage girls.
or pre-pubescent boys. Oh, and not everyone wants to
fear for their safety from the rage some concert-goers
want to unleash on everyone, whether you welcome it or
not.
The artist on stage
> moves around a lot and in

sure! They dance, they jump, they shout the words out
loud, and yup, sometimes they get rowdy.
Of course some

However, when someone else inflicts harm onto another
individual who is not provoking the situation, well,
that doesn't seem like "releasing energy" to me. it's
not that I don't like moshing, I don't like being
injured in the name of music. I should pay my money,
see the artist I came to see and go home free of
injury. I shouldn't be pre-occupied with keeping an
eye on the crowd around me.
> If people pay $50 to beat the shit out of each other
> while music is going,
> more power to them.
That just sounds ridiculous to me. Beat each other up
for free. I pay money to see an artist perform, not
to watch people beat each other up because they have
their own issues they can't deal with and then blame
it on music.
Of course it would be nice if
> there were seperate
> sections for this, but then I think people would

True.
I wouldn't go to a

Or it's a place where people can get away with
physically harming people and scapegoating it as
expression to the music.
When did music become an excuse for violence?
It's just something that is
> inevitable.
perhaps.
I'm not against moshing, or self-expression, but when
it's imposed on others, or it inflicts harm to those
who don't invite it, I see it as a problem.
Mosh, Mosh, Mosh, just be respectful of others. PLUR
