Moby is these days, fairly obviously, the 'next big thing', and millions are
lining up to buy his heavily-discounted-by-retailers CD's because it's
cheap, and everywhere I go seems to be playing it. In a years time or so,
the media will have moved onto some new 'next big thing' (probably a
soul-metal crossover I reckon), and Moby will be 'last years news'. This
happens all the time.
BUT :
Think that for every new 'fan' Moby picks up, some will stay with him
forever and Moby will be able to continue to make records (financially) as
well as injecting some taste beauty and art into the mainstream media
"Play" will become the great seduction album of the year 2000
And 1.6 Million people at least will have read the essays inside the CD
book, which is, in some small way, at least isntrumental in changing teh
world, even if JUST ONE person turns vegetarian as a result

i agree, tho not just becoming a vegan, but possible they may
become influenced to create and experience art and music, perhaps
they might express their own views with more strength after
experiencing moby, perhaps w/ veganism, or human rights. i
completely agree and hope that this "big thing" creates a birth of
hope, word?

ok this is just a mix of stuff that comes to mind....
im glad mobys famous. pop muzik SUCKS and we need some
intelligence up in here. besides, moby still isnt
number 1ne on the charts or anything (in america at
least) so you know hes still not super famous like BSB
or anything. and if he is someday....GOOD! i'll still
be on this list even then. maybe you wont be, maybe
Ryu wouldnt be, maybe Clay or Kees wouldnt be, but i
would.
anyway, its interesting about this whole Bush stuff.
my pal Jon (who doesnt even know if hes on Mobility
anymore) saw Moby and Bush and he was saying that the
crowd was like wooden during Moby. only like3hree
people were dancing but the rest was crickets. soem
guy behind him even yelled "you suck!" during
porcelain (hes fucking DEAD! ;) i think basically what
should happen is that this should be a lesson to Moby,
not to tour like this. I honestly think Bush would
rock live (seriously, I still think they are not just
a Nirvana rip-off just as i didnt when i was a
"modern" "rock" junkie in 94, and they do have some
good songs, IMHO) but its just not the same crowd.
Moby should continue playing with techno groups. maybe
he doesnt want to be pigeonholed that way, but thats
what would werk. but whatever, ANY moby show is one of
the high points of yr life, becuz of all the damn
positive nrg!!!! and if anybody doesnt move during
Moby's set, they are DEAD. FUCKING DECEASED. ceased to
be, shuffling off this mortal coil, pushing up daisies
etc. (right, i got a slug! does it talk? ;)
ok im done. ill tell u about the charts oon.
one more thing, i was at WPKN and they just got a CD-R
of the new SONIC YOUTH CD!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!! i'm getting
to be obsessed with them. they are so unstoppably
brilliant, and always have been. they really, really
should do something with moby somehow, i dont know how
it would possibly work, but whatever, it would
definitely kick ass.
screaming fields of sonic MOBY!!!!!

ok well um PLAY fell down a couple spots to number
60ixty something but on the dance charts NB is
20wenty! so who knows it could be number 1ne soon and
that would ROCK!
also, the new Elliott Smith album is 9inety9ine! and
built to spill LIVE is 2wenty3hree on heatseekers so
that means it probly hasnt hit the charts but oh well.
over on sockheads theyve been talking about BTS a lot
cuz they ROCK!
also, i was gonna say about Moby not getting good
vibes at Bush shows, they also said on Sockheads that
Violent Femmes (who some worship on that list) played
at some "modern" "rock" radio station festival with
all these big stupid bands, and they kept getting
booed, and the kids were even throwing stuff at the
Femmes, and in the middle of the song they stopped and
said like "if you dont stop that we're leaving" and
the kids kept going so the Femmes shouted "FINE! FUCK
YOU! WE'RE PAID!!!!" and just left. thats shocking,
like how can people be that disrespectful to such a
great group? like these things usually happen at an
amusement park or something, and theres several other
stages, so like you could go somewhere else while yr
waiting for Limp Bizkit to come on or something.
sheesh.
and of course everytime i hear "Violent Femmes" i
think of Sifl & Olly singing "Blister In The Sun" with
the Karaoke machine, the super deluxe jukebox 2000
extravaganza or whatever its called (crap i cant even
remember minute S&O details now! the kind that people
jsut spit out at any given moment from the Simpsons!)
which is good for you guys becuase when i do that you
all yell at me. but anyway i should go now. or
something.
listen to Le Tigre and Sleater Kinney,
DJ PAUL

funny you should mention that about the femmes, paul...they were playing
here once in a pathetically undersized room for the amount of people, and
people were throwing things and crowd surfing and stuff. the band stopped
in the middle of the song they were playing and told everyone to knock it
off or security would throw them out. some idiot decided to test them. he
got thrown out, and after the song, brian said he had two things to say: 1.)
they were serious about the no crowd surfing thing (who crowd surfs at a
femmes show anyway??? isn't that like moshing at a garth brooks show?) and
2.) WHEN I SAY DANCE.....
anyway, about the whole moby not getting respect at bush shows, preconcieved
notions are hard to break. i try to go into each concert i go to with an
open mind, and don't write a band off until i've seen them a few times
(there are such things as bad nights...). anyway, sounds like these
particular bush fans basically said, "moby, who the hell is that? he
probably sucks, or he'd be played on our 100.something station like limp or
kid rock or whatever other little-talent band they're playing this week,"
and (surprise, surprise) they thought he sucked. fine. however, there is a
certain respect one must have for any musician, no matter how little talent
one thinks they have. i mean, personally, i think eminem and kid rock have
no business being in the recording industry, but the fact that they are
doing it speaks volumes about them. it takes courage to get in front of a
room of 2,000 or more strangers in a different town every night and do your
thing like a travelling freakshow exhibit for all to watch.
i remember when depeche mode was on their singles tour in 1998. stabbing
westward was the opener, and i can safely say that 15 people were on their
feet. i was told to sit down by people behind me a few times. i kept
telling them to stand up.
sorry if this doesn't make any sense, my brain is fried from an economics
exam.............i promise to be more coherent next time!

I just saw Built to Spill play 2 shows at Irving Plaza, was so damn good...
and the violent femmes, I used to think their live shows were cool, but the
last one I went to, I about fell asleep...
their drummer doesn't even really use a kit, and it's acoustical and really
stripped down sounding and they seem to play everything slower paced.
Heh and what's with all the moby fans dissin bush, it's gettin kinda old
now. I think sixteen stone was a damn good album and still do, and they
aren't a bad live band. If some bush fan says moby sucks, I mean who gives
a shit. They probably like guitar oriented rock when going to see a live
show.
my ears are ringin, gotta lie down, tinitus is a bitch..

Chris

Right...what i get from this is Unfortunately a sad lack of respect=20
period....i mean we usually go to a concert to see one of the bands and=20
there's another band tucked in...where does it say that any band should be=20
treated disrespectfully from the crowds? There are other things to do while=20
that band is performing. Go take a walk...get a drink..go to the loo...buy a=
=20
t-shirt...RATHER than acting stupid/rude and obnoxious. Will things never=20
change!? Sigh....
I do recall reading that Moby was aware of the types of crowds he'd run=20
across during this tour. If we notice the lack of movement from the majority=
=20
of the crowds..Surely he must. He must have expected it though, don't you=20
think? I am sure when he sees little pockets of his loyal fans mixed with th=
e=20
others he feels pretty great about it. I was a lone dancer in my area while=20
my family and the college kids sat and sat and sat. He had a good attitude=20
about the whole thing. He said something like with this tour he was able to=20
travel around and see parts of the country he would otherwisenever get a=20
chance to see. So he had a positive attitude and is making the best out of=20
it. He's abig boy..he'll survive and maybe learn( and teach) a thing or two=20
along the way..it's called.....LIFE! Hey..its spring!!..lets be happy for=20
Moby cruising all over this beautiful countryside when everything is so gree=
n=20
and great!! I hope Moby and his band get a chance to enjoy it all.
So this is goodbye.......cheri =DC

i'm insulted...i'm a huge bush fan, a bigger bush than moby fan infact
(although i love moby as well)...not all us bush fans suck. i've never met a
cool bush fan that doesn't like moby, and for the few that don't like him,
i've always defended moby. i saw them both at campus invasion, and it was the
regular college crowd that was in general being a bunch of stupid pricks.
they didn't get into either bush or moby...a lot of good bush fans, and i'm
refering to the big fans -- as you are to moby -- do like moby. 2/4 of bush
themselves love moby. both gavin and nigel love him! so my general point is,
please don't diss bush or their real fans... although feel free to insult the
gavin lovers cuz they're stupid and aren't true fans anyway lol. c'mon, you
gotta admit bush puts on a very good show.
btw- if you're wondering where the hell i came from, i'm just on digest mode
for moby news since i know most discussion lists get news before regular
ones. i wasn't originally intending on posting anything but i felt i had to.
and i apologize for posting something that isn't very moby related.

I don't normally diss bands but that is two more than Nirvana-lite, sorry I
meant Bush, are ever going to make. Never like a band named after your

It mentions Moby all over the place.

Guys this happens all the damn time, a feud developes
between the hardcore/longtime fans and the new fans.
This list used to be mainly letters complain of
underapprecieatement. And now all we do is complain
about new (not-hardcore) Moby fans. Why aren't we all
just happy to have our buddy say: "hey lets listen to
some of that Moby stuff", instead of when we used to
say: "have you ever heard of this cool guy moby".
Fans unite we all love him, lets just party hard and
Erin don't fret life is definitely good.
Party on everybody, I love you guys
you perk up my day everytime I read my new Mobility
