Subject: (mobility) MOBY gets interviewed in DJ magazine!!!
Hello people!
Well here is the interview which a lot of you asked me to post it up!
Where are you and how do you feel?
Moby: "In a Paris hotel room, and I feel lfine. It's nice talking to someone
in my native tongue."
Do you believe in life after love?
"I'd like to give a witty answer...err, the only thing I can say is that I'm
34-years-old, and I get involved in a lot of different romantic
releationships which at some point all end. Maybe two percent of
relationships I've been in have ended perfectly, yet time goes on and what
seems devastating in the short-term in the long-term doesn't seem quite so
bad."
Is everything still wrong?
"No, and I think if I was to make that album again I'd change the title. I
love that album and I'm very proud of it, but my world view has changed a lot
since then. At the time I saw the world in very dualistic terms-right or
wrong, black and white- and it's a lot more complicated than that. So I
think I'd call it 'Everything is Complicated' now."
Who has Natural Blues?
"Taj Mahal. He had an album called 'Natural Blues' in the early seventies,
and when I did a show in Paris a few months ago I was hanging out back-stage
and I got a knock on the door and there was Taj Mahal. He'd heard me play
and really loved it, and of all the people who have told me they like my
album that one means the most. My mother was a big fan..."
Is sampling all in the reverence it's done with?
"I think there's been some really clumsy, irreverent records based around
samples that are wonderful. There's some Puff Daddy songs, for
instance...what's that one that samples Diana Ross? On the one hand it's
crass commercial product...I think it has less to do with intent than it has
to do with outcome."
Ever fallen off your keyboard?
"Oh yes, oh boy, have I fallen off my keyboard! It quite often gets slippery
on stage, and I've wounded myself more times than I can count-not seriously,
though. There was one time when I was playing in Florida and I was climbing
one of the monitors and fell off, and when the lights are flashing and the
music's playing and suddenly you find yourself lying on your side clutching
suspected broken ribs...Yeah, I fall down a lot."
Does a Brit mean shit?
"What surprises me most about the Brit Award nomination is the fact that I
was nominated alongside Will Smith and Ricky Martin, who are international
icons. You could go to Sumatra and people know who Will Smith and Ricky
Martin are. I should think I make records ion a very different way to those
guys...So anyways, yes I'd like to win the Brit for my record company Mute, a
relatively small independent up against the might of corporate
multi-nationals., Supporting the DiY ethos. Must be something to do with
the old punk rocker in me."
What was the last illegal thing you did?
"Last night I let off a fire extinguisher in a hotel room. It was very
funny."
If you met yourself at a party, what would you think?
"I tend to avoid other bald skinny guys at parties."
What's the strangest tplace you've ever put your hand?
"Mmm, a few years ago I used to have this dog called Walnut [tells very long
story about having to assist his dog doing a poo one time]..."
Did you have a happy childhod?
"No. I wouldn't have it any other way now, but I lived in a very well-off
white area outside New York with my mother, and everyone else at school had
brothers and sisters and we were poor."
When did you last go to a rave?
"A couple of weeks ago I tried to go to Cream, and we were quite late. We'd
missed the guest list and were trying to blag in past a huge bouncer and they
weren't having any of it. Even though one of my records was playing inside
at the time".
Who's your all-time favorite DJ and why?
"It sounds like a cliche but it would have to be Larry Levan. I was going
out to the Paradise Garage in New York when I was about 17 and I didn't drink
then or do drugs - I'd go just for the music. And Larry used to play all
over the place, he was amazing..."
Are you an ex-Christian now?
"I still love Christ, but I can't be in the Christian club when so many
Christians think they're right and everybody else is wrong".
Well folks here it is! Hope you enjoy this little article!
Cheers,
Marisa

My name is Eric and I am the program director and DJ for an english language
radio station in Stockholm, Sweden called Rocket 95.3 FM. A few months ago I
had the privelege of doing a live radio interview with Moby when he was in
town. I spent the whole morning preparing for the interview, and I was very
pleased with the results. We discussed a wide range of topics, and I was
very impressed at the level of Moby's thinking and his deep understanding of
important issues. The interview is now posted on our website as a Real Audio
file, and I think Moby fans will enjoy listening to it. It can be found at
http://www.rocket.fm Enjoy. Eric Paglia.

for anyone still looking for a copy of the moby ck ad, there is a nice
2-page one in the march issue of mixmag. and for all you flat eric fans out
there (okay, just paul, i guess :) ), there's a picture of him getting an
autopsy and a "pickled eric polaroid."
oh yeah--i don't know if i mentioned this yet or not, but there was yet
another moby interview in the march 11th issue of nme (the real one, not the
.com). this one was done in athens, greece (where, incidentally, i lived
for 3 months). it was an okay piece, but he did say that the fans on "the
web site" can be "precious" about him.

Subject: (mobility) Moby in Tampa
Whewwww! Just got back from the moby/bush concert in tampa.
and thank god i decided to wait near the buses, cuz guess who i met!
woo hoo!
it was actually kind of funny.
You know how most arenas or venues have a lower level for where the buses
park?
Well the sundome had the same thing and so a couple people (including me)
were just sorting hanging over the railing wondering if anyone was in the
bus. it was better than waiting in line to get in anyways.
so the other people are chit chatting and so on, and im just daydreaming
looking down, and guess who walks right out from under the dome exit. MOBY!
stupid me tho, i was like shocked he'd just be walking by himself so i stood
and watched and then this other girl finally saw him and screamed "MOBY!"
thank god she did cuz who knows he might have just walked right into the
bus!
Anyways he heard and decided to climb his way up the hill to us. Now now
don't worry it wasn't some rock climbing adventure for him, just a hill.
But i do think the security guy was shocked that he was coming up to us.
Hell I was shocked he was coming up to us. So he gets up there, and I'm
scrambling to get my cds out of my pocket, nevermind how i fit the cds in my
pocket but there were only like 6 other people waiting, so luckily i got to
talk to him.
I gave him a cd of my remixes of his stuff, and some of my stuff. Who knows
maybe he'll take a listen on the bus :) one can only hope.
The one girl who screamed out his name also gave him a cd of her band. So
he must get alot of free amateur music :)
He also signed my MOBY cd, not PLAY like the other girl did, but you know
the "MOBY" album. its cool how he always signs with the little idiot
character :)
good thing that girl also had a sharpie! thank you girl!
i didnt want to waste the opportunity so i kept chatting with him :) i
asked him about that string sound he uses so much, i pretty much knew the
answer, but i felt like hearing him say it :)
i even told him i was shocked at how nice he was and how he made the effort.
not that i was shocked in him, its just most musicians especially the "rock"
stars don't seem to make the effort.. i wish i coulda talked more with
him, cuz hes just so friendly :)
anyways the concert was great.
you haven't experienced moby's music until you've heard it vibrate through
your body :)
when they opened up with "My Weakness" it was just played while they were in
the back, but man the strings and piano stuff sounded so lush and loud, it
vibrated everything in the building. and the way the lights moved in sync
with the chords, it almost made you feel like you were underwater.
he mostly played stuff from play (not in this order).
Honey, Porcelain, Why Does My Heart..., Bodyrock, Natural Blues, Machete, My
Weakness
non play stuff
The James Bond Theme, Go, Feeling So Real (it kicked ass), Bring Back My
Happiness
He also played some stuff off of Early Underground and MOBY.
And when he played the older stuff, he took the time to point out 2 people
with glow sticks, dancing like they were in a rave and said "i'd like to
dedicate this song to the people with the glow sticks" and mentioned playing
at a rave a couple years back there.
oh one other cool thing. the girl before when i was meeting moby, gave him
a shirt of her band, and he was like "oh i think the concert is being filmed
today, so i'll wear your shirt when i play" the girl had a huge grin on :)
he really knows how to make someones day.
another reason you should go see him (if for some odd reason your wondering
whether you should go!)
is the guy runs around like a kid on sugar who needs some riddlin (however u
spell that)
its funny at first, but its cool that he runs around with all that energy.
he would run from his keyboard bang some notes, run to the mic, shout, run
to the percussion setup he had, bang away, run back to the keyboard, bite
his fingers while playing the string part, run back jump on the higher part
of the set, raise his hands, lights shining, crowd cheering, then jumping
back down to where he could sing.
it was definately fun to watch. and man i gotta find out how he rigs his
keyboard to support his weight, because he did a short hand stand on it for
a sec or two, and on the last song he jumped on top of the keyboard (which
ive seen in pictures and all but I couldnt believe :) )
i wish i could do that on my keyboard :) I'd just slip right off.
DJ Spinbad, wasnt too bad. He mainly scratches the whole time here and
there, but he also plays some of the piano parts like on porcelain or
natural blues or why does my heart.... he had on knicks jersey, and he got
to do showoff as moby said.. he even called him the best dj in the world :)
(damn this email is getting long but oh well)
anyways moby did a funny thing when he said "imagine for a sec it's 1987.. i
just want to do a guitar solo for 30 secs"
he then proceeded to play a metallica like solo, but like for 30secs not
even, and boom, "ok im done"
He didn't get to do an encore, but overall i was very happy with the
concert, for one cuz i met him!! woo hoo!
Bush, wasn't too bad. I like em, but basically hearing them on the radio is
all i need. Their performance tho was pretty good. some powerful songs the
crowd really got into. plus there was this one song where the band kept
playing and Gavin decided to go out into the 2nd level of the dome. i dont
know how the hell he did it, but he walked in front of the ground level and
then somehow climbed up to where i was on the 2nd level.. i couldnt see
everything but i coulda sworn he was playing a solo while being fondled and
held up by the crowd.. one guy apparently a die hard moby fan, was holding
one of the promotional PLAY posters hitting him on the head with it and
pulling at his hair, and i could hear someone shouting "MOBY - PLAY!" so
that was kind of funny.
but damn Gavin is crazy.
well thanks MOBY! and anyone who still has a chance to see him, its worth
every buck, just make sure u get their early and look for the shiny silver
buses!
woohoo!

oi there mobilites,
just saw moby's spot for the sci fi channel. was kinda amusing. big ufo
hovering over some complex with moby and various crew in it, moby
scratching signals out, then the ufo replies and everything kinda shakes
and flashes and it cuts quick to moby like standing on his board and
mixing then cuts to the scifi logo bit.
so we know it's there and getting play, trick's just someone capturing it.
also, anyone going to the state college, pa or oswego, ny gigs? i wanna go
but have no one to go with and no place to crash as it stands... (might
have someone fer oswego, not sure yet)

Hi folks
about the sci-fi ad. I sent a letter to the webmaster at adcritic.com. The
site is devoted to archiving commercials and i asked him to get the moby ad
for us. He's says they're going to try so maybe we'll get it online soon.

Hi Mobydicts:
Although we (I mean us people in Spain, Mobydicts or not) heard of
South Park TV series some time ago, we havent been able to watch it
(on a dish channel) until mid-last year.
As it seems that some celebrity is featured in almost every chapter
we've seen, I'd like to know if Moby does it in any of them.
I'd rather see the original English version, although I must
acknowledge that it's sometimes quite difficult to understand them,
specially Stan's younger brother, and, of course, Kenny (sometimes, I
guess he's actually talking, and it's not simple mumbling) :)
