Subject: (mobility) PERFECTO!
I received my Mute "Natural Blues" singles this
morning. They actually arrived at the Post Office
on Saturday (in a blazingly quick five days from
the UK - double barrel shotgun kudos to
www.action-records.co.uk - forever and ever
AMEN!), but I couldn't pick them up till today
because the lame PO doesn't open the pick up
window on Saturdays (suck!).
Anyway, I retrieved them before work today, and
can now offer my review.
First the remixes.... The Perfecto Mix is simply
stunning. All the perfecto trademarks are
there... the stacatto synth riffs, the big
melodies, the big beats. Reminds me in parts of
the Perfecto Mix for U2's "Lemon", but that's a
good thing. I would've preferred it had all the
lyrics from the song been included.... But they
get the feel of the song almost as well as Ferry
Corsten nailed "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?".
The mike d mix seems less a remix than a cover
version. New vocals, new instrumentation, even
new lyrics in places..... an intriguing twist,
but not quite what I was looking for. As far as
this approach goes, I have to say I appreciate
Glean's straight ahead punk version over Mike D's
stone soup rendition. But just barely.
Finally, the Peace Division is great ear candy,
and highly enjoyable, even if it doesn't add
anything new to the song.
As for the Bsides, "The Whispering Wind" is
another of those cuts one has to wonder why it
didn't make the actual album. It is entrancing
and haunting, and full of melancholy emotion.
Moby said he wrote over 300 songs for Play. But
in reality, many of those "songs" were demos that
he took bits and pieces from three or four
different tunes and made one song out of for the
album. The second B-side, "Sick in the system"
reminds me of that tactic. It borrows bits a
couple of older tunes, "No Buttons to Push," a
bside to the original "Voodoo Child" 12-inch, and
pitches up "Degenerate," from "Little Idiot" the
bonus cd from the UK version of Animal Rights,so
that it's faster and in a major key. The effect
sets up a feel that is both playful and
melancholy, duelling emotions that compliment
each other as they play against each other
instead of working in opposition.
The bsides for Play have been of a consistently
high quality. I don't think I've seen such a
stong collection of songs since U2's "The Joshua
Tree" singles put out a whole second album worth
of material, and nearly as good. Typically, for
each single off play, there has been one stellar
song, and one kind of throw-away track. But the
two for "Natural Blues" are both of a stellar
quality that clearly makes the singles worth
ordering from the UK.

Well, I've now spent more than I can afford on music de Moby, so I feel like,
dammit, I should be able to say what I think of it!
I think that the cover of "Whip It" from the Come On Baby rubber is hilarious.
(It's supposed to be funny, right? :-))
Animal Rights kicks, as does it's sister Little Idiot disc. I've wanted some
music like that to vent to and to chill to for a long time now. Woohoo!
hmyn.alt.quiet.version is almost TOO quiet.. sometimes I forget it's even
playing; it's so soft!
I long for Moby to score a whole film sndtrck, unfortunately it doesn't look
like that is going to happen any time soon. It would be super duper, though.
Ok, that's it.
Back to my bread and water dinner.

Maybe they trade for pot.. heh heh.
Actually I know of something kinda like this in around San Fran, Berkeley I
think.. A prof told me about it.. Basically there's a tradition of putting out
"free boxes" where you just stuff all of the garage sale type things into a box
and put it out on the sidewalk, then whoever wants some of it can take it, and
you can take from whatever other boxes are out there. Isn't that sweet? :-)

No, it's far from free and the Free Record Shop stores near where I live all
have
a REALLY crappy selection of music and are pretty expensive. I must admit I
sometimes look through their singles section, but only with a fake beard and
sunglasses
on. As a respectable record and CD collector I surely wouldn't want to be
seen there :)
It also isn't free in the sense of "indepenent" They only stock major
titles/artists...
No, the best music is still to be found at the smaller indepedent stores!
>Maybe they trade for pot.. heh heh.
hmm, I still have some old CDs no one wants, I'll ask them :p

Funny. Same thing for me :)

From action-records too ! Nice coincidence. The only difference is that i
focused on remixes and bought the remix cd, the regular 12", and the promo 2
with those amazing katcha and olmec heads remixes. Mobiles, always check what
action guys have in stock because they can have nice moby promos (like the
Promo cd of NB with all the mixes that i could but didn't buy. ARGHHH !),
they're not expensive and they're fast. Viva action records !

Don't know much about Perfecto but i do agree that it's stunning
Though i think i prefer the perfecto dub on the 12".

Made me think of that too until i listened to the Olmec Head remix.... :)

As you say, nnot a real remix but i like this kind of oriental stuff. Once
again, the mix on the regular 12" is better than the edit. Not the thing i
would put in a party but easily listenable at home.
> Finally, the Peace Division is great ear candy,

That's fun because i really don't like it (nearly as much as the Sharp mix
for why does...?).
When you have all those superb mixes, you can leave this one besides.
Now i go back on those Katcha and Olmec Heads mixes. I bought them cos i had
the opportunity to do so and Bart seemed to really enjoy them and i must say
thank you Bart because these tracks are great. Very trancey stuff and you
don't get the idea of "I make a song and put vocals of the original on it".
The vocals fits perfectly on them and make them even more powerful. If you
come across thiese mixes in the future, do not hesitate: BUY THEM !

"Question: What song would you most like to do a remix for?
RS Moby: Some horrible Gloria Estefan record. I would like to remix songs
that I genuinely dislike. Imagine turning a Maria Carey song into a bombastic
speed metal, symphonic orgy. That'd be cool. Huh, huh, huh."

you about Moby's essay's!!!! Not only is he an amazing musician, but also a
brilliant writer! If you hear anything about future shows in Holland or the
UK, let me know. I'm going to be in the UK over the summer and would love to
check him out there. Peace.

hey guys,
My name is Erin and I'm new here. I picked up Play when it first came out
and been a Moby fan ever since. I was lucky enough to see him in concert
over the summer and had the greatest time!!! I have soooo many of his CD's
and am still on the lookout for more. My bro. is in the UK right now, and I
asked him to pick up some of his European releases for me...I hope he
remembers! I just have a question for you guys. Do any of you know what
Moby's real name is, or is it just supposed to be kept on the DL? Or is his
name really MOBY? If anyone knows, please write me back...I'm dying to find
out! THANX

Hi My name is Jenn I recently picked up "Play." I've been obsessed with Moby
ever since. His music inspires me to continue to write and draw more
interesting subjects. I find him to be beautiful in a strange unique way. On
March 28,2000 I hope to see him concert with Bush (who I don't like to much)
in Penn State. That's about all for now....

Hi! I am going to see Moby here in Ohio April 4th. He is playing with Bush
then too. I got my tickets in the mail today and looked them over....It did
not even mention Moby!! Just Bush! It was disappointing to say the least.
Then I JUST realized that Moby will be opening for Bush! Call me crazy but in
my mind I pictured it the other way around! I imagine most going to the
concert will be Bush fans....wierd! Well, at least I don't have to stay for
Bush unless I feel like it. I do like some of their songs but would not pay
to see them in concert....they just happen to be WITH Moby! Bottom line
is......I get to see Moby again!!!!
Take care! Cheri

I believe it's Richard Melville Hall. He is a descendant of the author of
MOBY Dick.Herman Melville. In an interview Moby said that it wasn't but a few
minutes after he was born that his folks nicknamed him Moby and it's stuck
ever since. (do I have this right??) Ok then.

Hey guys,
Just wanted you to know, don't bother looking for the PXLMute251. The
tracklisting of promo3 is exactly the same as the regular 12". AS far as
special promo material goes, well, the promo2 has exclusive mixes......but
for how long??? Mute plans to release a limited 12, an L12Mute251.
That one will probably have the same tracklisting as the PLMute251......
That leaves us up to the Perfecto Dub and the Peace division mix, unless
these mixes appear on the US version! Cross our fingers and let's hope so!
Cheers
