MOBY CHAT NME.COM
MARCH 4, 2000 2PM EST
[19:01:50] Jeff - why did you chose this particular genre of music?=20
Moby - umm. what particular type of music are you referring to?
[19:03:33] vegangoddess - are u a little taken aback by the 5 story CK=20
billboard right in your very hometown of nyc? u look so sexy! thanx 4 being=20
vegan.=20
Moby - i haven't seen the gigantomo on the corner of b'way and houston, but=20
it is right near my house. my exgirlfriend was quite perturbed to be walking=
=20
down the street and see me 70 feet tall. but now she can say that she's had=20
sex with someone who has a 12 f
[19:05:33] poisoneavy - hi moby! at first i want to say to you, that your=20
single "why does my heart feel so bad" is really great, congratulations!!!!=20
and here is my question: when is your next event in austria???cu soon=20
poisoneavy=20
Moby - in austria? i'm sorry, but i don't know when we'll be back in austria=
.
[19:06:01] Cosma - What is your next single?=20
Moby - the next single is 'natural blues', it comes out this monday. two day=
s=20
hence
[9:06:43] Ali_Fireworks - Moby - I'm visiting NYC in the summer. Any=20
particular Moby landmarks I should be looking out for?=20
Moby - the 'prince farm deli' on prince st. between mott and mulberry. that'=
s=20
where i buy my groceries.=20
[19:07:23] lax from denmark - Hope you understand my english..... Will just=20
tell you that I'm doing a hard work for selling your CD "play" in my=20
recordshop in Svendborg, F=FCnen, Denmark.=20
Moby - thank you! i hope to come back to denmark for festivals this summer.=20
see you then, hopefully
[19:08:01] Jeff - where did you get your inspiration for "porcelain"?=20
Moby - being in love with someone but knowing in my heart of hearts that i=20
shouldn't be romantically involved with them.[
[19:08:24] Beanie - What do you think of Bentley Rhythm Ace?=20
Moby - they make me laugh. in a nice way.
[19:08:40] Milk - Hi Mo, How are you?=20
Moby - i'm ok, thanks for asking
[19:11:26] spacechicken - 'tis me yet again, did you enjoy irlande when you=20
were here a few weeks ago?=20
Moby - i had a really nice time in ireland. i wish i had more time to spend=20
there so that i could see something other than the cities. maybe i'll take=20
some holiday time there this summer
[19:12:02] Aaarrgghh - When did you decide to get bald, and why?=20
Moby - i decided to go bald because nature has conspired to rob me of the=20
ability to have hair. very sad, isn't it...
[19:13:02] skipper - moby u inspired me to become vegan but i have recently=20
saw u pose in GQ w/ leather and cashmere - was there a particular reason?=20
either way i still luv u.=20
Moby - i didn't know it was cashmere...sorry. and i would never buy leather,=
=20
but for a photo shoot i guess....i guess i made a mistake. sorry.
[19:13:28] DublinDave - Who would you most prefer to be trapped in an=20
elevator with - James Hetfield or Lars Ulrich?=20
Moby - neither?=20
[19:14:35] Corporate Whore? - Your work has been featured in soooooo many US=
=20
TV commercials lately (Bailey's Irish Cream, a car ad, adidas, etc.), and no=
w=20
you're featured in a CK ad campaign ... do you have some king of vetting=20
process for picking companies you'll allow to use your music, or have you=20
finally realized that there's no escaping consumerism.=20
Moby - it's tricky, cos my music is owned by the record company, and as i=20
like the people at my record company i'm happy for them to make money from m=
y=20
music. but usually i'm not aware of what they choose to do with my music, co=
s=20
they own it, ultimately, and i=20
[19:17:14] Paul Dunn - Did you ever take drugs in your younger days?=20
Moby - yes. when i was very young, 10 years old, i took drugs cos i thoug;ht=
=20
that it would enable me to hang out with the cool kids. i'm pretty clean=20
these days...the occasional drink, that's about it.
[19:18:01] willywonka - what's been one of your most scariest/flattering=20
things a fan has done in your "play" tour?=20
Moby - someone grabbed me and bit my penis through my pants once. and they=20
bit HARD. it was scary and flattering at the same time...
[19:18:52] Col - In retrospect, was the Animal Rights album such a good idea=
?=20
Moby - oh yes. i love 'animal rights'. commercially it was a disaster, of=20
course. but i'm very proud of it as an emotional and personal body of work.
[19:19:39] abi - hello, again, but i just read that you were asked about=20
being bald - i hope it doesn't bother you as i and many other women find it=20
extremely sexy...=20
Moby - thank you...
[19:20:24] Brad - That person (who bit your penis...) was me!!!=20
Moby - are you a woman? cos i distinctly remember it being a woman. in=20
lawrence kansas. hallowe'en. 1993.=20
[19:21:11] RICHEY EDWARDS? - Why are you so shite?=20
Moby - hmm...genetics? upbringing? lack of friends? you tell me.
[19:23:16] Brad - What's your favourite chat up line?=20
Moby - 'if i could rearrange the alphabet i'd put "u" and "i" together'
[19:24:25] More! - B-Sides!! I want more! Love 'em more than the album=20
tracks.=20
Moby - thank you. i have to say to EVERYONE HERE that one of the reasons tha=
t=20
my answers are slow in coming is that i keep getting disconnected from this=20
dodgy server. sorry....call the folks at 'freeserve' and tell them to get=20
their act together. the future=20
[19:24:54] frank - Gore, Bradley, Bush, or McCain?=20
Moby - i know it's too conventional...but gore.
[19:25:38] susi - I love you!!!!! Do you have a girlfriend? Tell me the=20
truth, o.k.?=20
Moby - no, susi, i'm single. why do you ask? ahem?
[19:26:19] Gordon - don't worry you're not shite..=20
Moby - very kind of you to say...i'm sure that a lot of people think that i'=
m=20
shite, though. but thanks for the kind reassurances.
[19:26:47] Carolina - But if Gore's president, we have to deal with his=20
remarkably annoying wife, Tipper!=20
Moby - but tipper plays the drums! that covers up a multitude of failings, i=
n=20
my honest opinion
[19:27:23] dave - do you believe in gun control=20
Moby - absolutely. absolutely yes. even though firing a gun can be kind of=20
sexy i don't think that individuals should be allowed to own guns.
[19:28:53] Tomo - my friend says you look a bit alike Norman Cook..=20
Moby - well, we're both bald and caucasian. but then again most bald guys=20
kind of look the same. he's taller than i. and he's got a sparkplug of a wif=
e.
[19:29:23] adam - moby, can you come up with a name for my band please?=20
radiohead came up with Covalent Seasons, what can you come up with?=20
Moby - captain sugar and the punchbowls
[19:30:26] Brian - Did you struggle at the bgeinning to get a record deal?=20
Moby - oh boy, oh yeah. i sent tapes to every single record company on the=20
face of the earth and eventually signed to a teeny tiny little company that=20
had never even put out a record. so yes, boy did i struggle to get my first=20
deal.
[19:30:42] Gordon - Who do you fancy in the celebrity world?=20
Moby - hillary clinton
[19:31:40] Technical Questioner - On 2 or 3 of the tracks on 'Play' i can=20
distinctly hear a high-pitched whine, sort of like a carrier signal from a=20
modem. Is that due to a dodgy studio set-up at home, or a bad engineer. Did=20
you ever notice it? If not, has playing live ruined your hearing?=20
Moby - dodgy studio set up at home and a bad engineer. seeing as i make my=20
records at home and i engineer my stuff i'm to blame. the noise is called=20
smpte and i actually kind of like the way that it sounds. i like a bit of=20
unprofessionalism.
[19:32:30] Beanie - My band is called Bench and we're hopoing to play Leeds=20
this year....should we stick with this name?? We're kinda=20
guitars/bass/decks/samples...etc...=20
Moby - why not change it to (something) bench. the world is already quite=20
full of one word mono-syllabic band names. not a bad name, but you're smart,=
=20
you can do better.
[19:34:47] Brains - Are you aware of exactly how famous you are becoming?=20
Today my girlfriend's mother asked me for a borrow of Play, and yesterday I=20
was standing behind a guy in the queue at HMV who was buying a copy!=20
Moby - very strange, isn't it. especially seeing as i make my records in my=20
bedroom and i never really expect them to become successful.
[19:35:16] steve - Germany - How long did it take you to get to grips with a=
=20
roland 303=20
Moby - i had some help from some friends in amsterdam. it's a tricky piece o=
f=20
gear, though.
[19:36:06] Angi - Why is your name MOBY?=20
Moby - i'm related to herman melville who wrote moby dick and my parents had=
=20
a sense of humor...
[19:37:32] Paul Dunn - Have you started work on your new album?=20
Moby - no, i've been on tour since june and i haven't had much time to work=20
on new music. it would be nice to be at home for a while and actually be abl=
e=20
to work on new music.
[19:40:40] adam - what was your nickname in school?=20
Moby - my nickname was 'moby', which has been my nickname since birth.
[19:41:06] terry - the simpsons or southpark?=20
Moby - they're both phenomenal.
[19:41:50] Anonymous - when do you think your album will hit the shelf=20
Moby - may of 1999. it's sold 1.5 million copies so far. if you go back in=20
time you can be there for the release. :-) [19:43:21] kit - what's your real=
=20
name then?=20
Moby - richard melville hall. and i'm VERY SORRY to say that i have to go=20
now. it's been fun, and i apologize for the crap server. i've been=20
disconnected SIX TIMES! ah well, thanks for the questions, i'm sorry that i=20
didn't have the chance to answer more of=20

Hi gang,
Have any of you ever ordered from Mute's on-line
mailorder in the past? They are having a
fantastic sale on Moby's catalog items, as well,
Natch Blooz will be available there later today
for residents of the US. But I can't find any
listing for what they're shipping rates are to
the US and I was wondering if anyone had ordered
from them before and knew what the TOTAL bill was
per cd, etc., for shipping.

My touch with CHiPness.

Pollstar.com doesn't list Moby playing the Homelands Fest in Winchester,uK or
Scotland, but fwwt.com does. fwwt lists the Homelands Fest as taking place on
the weekend of the 27th of May in the UK (Moby on the 27th) and the weekend of
the 3rd in June in Scotland (Moby on the 3rd). Does anyone have any more info,
like how tickets are going to be sold, when, etc, especially for the Winchester
date?
Where is Winchester, anyway..
Oh, I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, so I'll mention it. There's a
little Moby blurb in Q magazine (the one with that Gallagher bro on it) on
page.. um.. 141, I think. It lists the dressing room food requirement of one of
his Spain shows. (Um, allright.)

This was painful to see now, since it was too late to watch any of it, but I
thought that incase anyone could get copies for themselves, they'd like to know
that:
Watch out for Moby on TV & on the radio this week:
Ian Wright (Fri 3 Mar, ITV 10.30pm)
Exclusive (Sun 5 Mar, Channel 5)
O Zone (Sun 5 Mar, BBC2 11.50 am, repeat)
Heaven & Earth (Sun 5 Mar, BBC1 approx 10am)
Planet Pop (Sun 5 Mar, 10.30 am Channel 4, repeated Tue 14)
That's actually from Mute's website (http://www.mutelibtech.com/mute/). I wish
I had known that they were doing that before! At least the Planet Pop will be
repeated, if anyone knows exactly what time, please let us know.

How many remixes were done after 91 of our man's underground major hit, the
smashing track known as Go ? We got the 92' mixes with Jam & Spoon remixes
and my favorite mix, the Arphathoski one (for the piano, superb) on Cd and
12", we got also Go Remix'98, a promo Cd single release in France but
available for everyone on the I Like to Score Cd. And i just found the 2000
remix of Go, totally unofficial on this page:
http://www.volny.cz/meettechno2000/music.html
Search for Ferris Bueller - Go 2000 (original Mix) and download
Trancey stuff, disappointing at the first listen but i begin to not dislike
it.
Well, despite being released 9 years ago, Go is still appreciated by remixers.
