Hi,
I saw this post about reverb and I don't have it on tape, but HBO is showing
it again very early Saturday morning (Saturday Jan. 1, that is) @ 2am.. Ok,
so if you have nil New Year's plans and intend on being up anyway-- spend New
Year's w/ Moby!!! Umm, consult your local tv listings about all that
business. I'm planning on taping it anyway so maybe I could do a trade
later--? Anyhow, just wanted to inform everyone of that.
Cheers!

Hi there:
For those of you who got DVD players this holiday season, there's a brand-new
music "magazine" on DVD format called Circuit. Circuit features a lot of
bands you probably like, and our issue #3 features an exclusive filmed
interview with Moby.
In this piece, we took Moby on a Hollywood sightseeing bus tour (to see
stars' homes, the Walk of Fame, etc.) while the bus driver asked him
questions about "Play," his life, etc. It's a really fun piece that you won't
see anywhere else. Plus, we've also got the "Run On" video.
***Disclosure***: I'm the editor of the magazine, so this isn't a completely
unbiased assessment, but I think this piece is great and I want the list
members to be aware of it. This disc also features 311, Flaming Lips,
Underworld, Paul Westerberg, Kool Keith and many others, and can be purchased
wherever DVDs are sold (including Amazon.com and DVDExpress.com).
Best regards,
Mara from Circuit

the beach, with dicaprio caused quite a stir in thailand, and i'm surprised
that mr. hall even considered contributing to that soundtrack. it would
appear that to create that movie, a great deal of natural forest on
thailand's islands were devastated by the crew to make room for sets. but
then again, that's not what people see on the movie screen. they'll always
see lovely fucking leo dicaprio getting laid in a beautiful backdrop (can
you tell i have something against that rich stupid bastard?).
not to say that porcelain wouldn't go well with nice thai beaches or
beautiful sunsets...
oh yeah, for all you punk fans out there, jello biafra has announced plans

He may not know of the purposeful devastation. Or he may not have even
wished to contribute to the soundtrack. I think it was Coal Chamber who was
also recently surprised that one of their songs was on a major soundtrack;
apparently the matter of licensing a song goes between the record company
and the people seeking to use the song, without necessarily contacting the
artist about it, let alone seeking approval.
As Tooth & Nail Records (the largest indie label in the Northwest) used to
have as their ASCAP name...."We Own Your Songs"....
(to which a band on their roster added as their copyright name, "No You
Don't, We Own Them")

Subject: (mobility) OT: Making Electronic Music
Hello, I know there are many talented electronic musicians out there and I
would like some help. I want to try and make my own electronic music.
But I don't want to go all out and spend every dime I got on it either. I
can't play the piano (do you need to?) but I'd still like to try.
I was wondering what equipment I would need to make some decent music. I
have a fast computer if that would help any. I was wondering about how
much I should be expecting to spend. Are there any good deals out there
on some equipment that does a lot for the money?
Does it require you to quit your job and be very dedicated or can I
actually make decent music in my spare time?
I went to the Guitar Center and saw keyboards from 700 dollars to over
3000 dollars and I have no idea which would be good for me.
Thank you for any help..!
Shaun

Don't know if any of you noticed, but I saw Any Given Sunday this weekend
and Moby has four or five songs in that film, including "Find My Baby",
"Ever Loving", "Graciosa" and "My Weakness" The last three are all used at
key, emotional turning poining points in the film. and "Ever Loving" is used
three or four times through out the movie. Moby is listed in the credits for
"Additional Soundtrack and Scoring". And it's a good movie besides the
conspicuous use of our little idiot (the new LI baseball jersey I was
coincidentally wearing when i went to see the movie! how sweet is that!?)

Subject: (mobility) Year end thoughs
Well, I say it was a good year for music. My tastes expanded greatly and my
appreciation for music grows daily. On the Moby front...
The year really began in April. Moby's last release was Honey, in fall 98,
and Run On was long awaited by myself. Honey I liked, but I couldn't imagine
an album full of it. For me, Honey was like peanut brittle. Very enjoyable
every once in a while, but nothing to make a steady diet of. Run On came as
both surprise and not-surprise. I guess I expected something very unusual,
after Honey, so it's strangeness was expected. The form of this weirdness
still caught me off-guard, though, and my parents wondered just what the
hell I was listening to. (you can't blame their curiosity when my siblings
are playing Korn, Celine, Tupac, etc.) After hearing it several times I
realized that I liked it much better than Honey, mainly because it didn't
feel so cumbersome or dense to me. Honey, however, was the winner
remix-wise. Moby's remix of Run On, The Young & Funky mix, is fun & playful
with it's horns, but the Risk & Dark mixes he did for Honey hearken back to
the classic Moby techno days and are now favorites of mine. They really
should have been on the US CD, I think.
When the Honey-Run On CD for the US was about to be released, I had the
honor of directing a trivia contest for V2, which took place here on
mobility. Once again I'd like to thank Moby, V2, and everybody who
participated. Since I've received no complaints I take it you all got your
prizes safely. :)
Finally, Play came out at the beginning of June! It owned my CD player
fulltime for a week, and after that stayed in constant rotation for a while.
It isn't my favorite CD this year, as I think the final third of Play is too
slow & quiet to sustain my interest most of the time, but overall, an
excellent CD with lots of new approaches and a high degree of listenability.
It's fun to listen to AND it's great for starting conversations. I must've
told 10 or 15 people about 'Sounds Of South' and how Moby used vocals from
it.
Bodyrock is a fun song, but wouldn't have been my choice for a single. Well,
I'm obviously wrong. :) I'm glad that Moby's getting the exposure he wants.
I like it when one of 'my' bands gets popular, since it gives me a bit of
faith in humanity. (j/k, I'm no cynic)
I was a bit disappointed in the Play B-sides. I do like the simple, often
graceful instrumentals he's made, it's just that I know he's got some read
spicy zesty dance tunes in him, and I'm greedy for those. The B-sides mesh
mesh well with thier respective singles, and overall seem like appropriate
b-side companions for Play, but they just don't have the replay value. For
me.
I saw Moby in Chicago in late August, which was my 3rd Moby concert. I had a
great time, I got to meet, hug, & thank Moby. He graciously signed &
cartooned my Play liners, too. :) The whole concert report and stories of
me meeting Moby & Duard are in the mobility archives for late August, if you
missed them and want to read them. A great time.
Now I'm waiting to hear the Natural Blues remixes!
Here's a few of my favorite CDs from this year, in no particlar order:
Wilco, Summerteeth
Underworld, Beaucoup Fish
The Clash, From Here To Eternity (live)
Gomez, Liquid Skin
Counting Crows, This Desert Life
Built To Spill, Leep It Like A Secret
The Flaiming Lips, The Soft Bulletin
Chemical Brothers, Surrender
Moby, Play
There's a bunch of other CDs I bought that I haven't had the fair time to
gauge, but some of these may very well become favorites: Tom Waits, Super
Furry Animals, Foo Fighters, U-ziq, The Velvet Underground (not 99, I know),
& Beck
Thank you Moby for the music, and thank you for the excellent concert. I
look forward.
Happy new year, everybody!
- -Steve

Subject: Re: (mobility) Year end thoughs
Hmm.. This was not a good year for new music in my opinion. Moby and BT were
my only favorites who did not disappoint me. I love Foo Fighters and Beck
as my top favorites, but sadly their recent ventures were below their genius.
The Foo was way to mellow, and Beck trying the Prince sound just doesn't
jive with me (even though MV has some very excellent tracks). And sadly we
have seen groups who had potential dwindle away into medicroty (Bush). Then
there were those pleasant surprises by those who I had never really paid much
attention to (Fiona Apple and Chemical Brothers).
Happily, electronic music is getting some duly deserved attention. It's
getting beyond the video game notion and is getting viewed as actual music
(or some of it at least). Hopefully my personal favorite underdog BT will
start getting some recognition because his new album is absolutely beautiful,
plus he's doing the new Mission Impossible theme and tons of fun stuff ...
(sorry for the off topicness).
I can't wait to find out what Moby does next. I love artist who keep you on
your toes and you'll never guess what direction they'll go in. I hope he
does something with heavy guitars to show that rock is not dead and that you
don't need to be an asshole to be a rock star... That would be so cool..
On a completely different note, Mr. Moby had a blurb in the new issue of
CMJ-New Music (or whatever its called) which had Kid Rock on the cover about
the state of music...
