CONCERT REVIEW: Moby in Madison, Wisc.
By Heather M. Ramsden

(U-WIRE) MADISON, Wisc. -- Electronica pioneer Moby gave a performance
nothing short of spectacular at Madison, Wisc.'s Barrymore Theatre, 2090
Atwood Ave., Friday. Moby entranced and energized the sold-out crowd with his
wide range of music.
Moby, along with his full band including percussionists and a bassist, drove
every note and beat into the ecstatic crowd without showing any signs of
slowing down.
The night began with DJ Spinbad mixing everything from the Beastie Boys to
Prince, aptly setting the mood for Moby's performance. The lights went down
and blue spotlights penetrated the packed theater while various shapes of
white light danced on the ceiling.
The emotional instrumental "My Weakness" blasted as the band walked on stage
and Moby finally appeared. With no delay, he ripped right into "Machete," a
hard-core, electronic beat-driven song that sent the audience into a frenzy,
surrounded by intense flashing lights.
Moby's performance included many songs from his newest album, Play, which
displays everything from gospel and blues to classical and punk guitar--and,
of course, dance music.
He also performed some European hits like "Go" and "Feelin' So Real," which
drove the audience into a dancing craze pulled straight from a rave scene.
This eclectic mix of sounds allowed Moby to display his pure talent as a
musician and performer as he ran and flailed around the stage playing guitar,
bongos, keyboards and drums--all this while singing with emotion.
The crowd returned Moby's energy and passion in the same manner he delivered
it, following his lead with head banging, jumping, swaying, hands clapping
and rave dancing.
At times, Moby broke the continuum of excitement and displayed his meek,
humble side. He talked and joked with the crowd, even playing requests and
bringing some fans on stage to talk.
Moby had some fun playing "Dueling Banjos" with DJ Spinbad. Moby began by
playing a riff on his guitar as DJ Spinbad replied with record scratching. He
also covered songs by Led Zeppelin and "Walk This Way," which showed his
punk-rock roots.
Moby communicated to the audience in a way that is rarely experienced. He
enraptured the crowd with the energy, passion and drive of his music. All of
these feelings were summed up by the final song, which Moby introduced as the
fastest song ever produced.
He stood alone on stage behind a keyboard, staring listlessly out into the
theater. He remained motionless as a blue spotlight flashed on him,
accelerating along with the music.
Moby lifted his arms and shook them to the beat as the crowd mimicked him. As
it got more and more intense, all the crowd could do was feel it and lift
their arms.
Moby stood up on his keyboard and his arms slowly rose. The crowd's hands all
reached up with his as the music got faster and chaotic, finally coming to an
abrupt end with a simultaneous white spotlight shining over Moby into the
audience.
It was a spiritual moment that encompassed the uplifting feelings the show
produced. Moby is a truly amazing musician and performer who is able to
create an energy and rapture everyone should experience.

I'm amazed at how many song are being released as singles! Love that.

I enjoyed the Club 69 remix equally... and I think Peter (Club 69) did
a GREAT job on the "Five Fathoms" remix of Everything But The Girl.
Personally, I'd enjoy seeing Peter remix a Moby single. You can tell
that I'm a fan. Peter was in a rut but I think he's coming out of it.
To bad he has a rep for being a jerk. :(

K ~ as an ex-Portlander, you so don't want to live there. At all. That is
if you like the sun. If you're a rain lover, go for it. It is cold and wet.
Brrr, got the chills just thinking about it. Beyond that, Portland is
beautiful. Go to Saturday market downtown.. lots of local cool handmade
stuff. I haven't been back for many many years so beyond that I couldn't
tell you.

I am getting a video that a friend taped for his company from the woodstock
99 performance...
I won't give the video out cause it would get him in trouble. But I might
just take the audio from it if enough people want it, it is a soundboard
recording. Hopefully he gets the video to me in a week or so. Later...

That would be really cool if you could hook me up with an audio from Friday night. Please keep me posted if this is at all possible or if you can think of another place to look. Tara
