  182. I was wondering.  Since "presumably" we are the some of the best fans
  183. moby has and "presumably" he reads this.  I'm wondering if moby will
  184. take time after the shows to meet the crowd and sign autographs.  Its
  185. always been a goal of mine to meet moby and this is my first chance.  So
  186. i'm extremely excited about these concerts.  I'm hoping maybe moby
  187. himself will give some feedback on this question.  However, i know that
  188. many of you people on the list have met him.  I'll probably only get to
  189. go to one concert (6 hours away :(  to much driving!!!!!)  but i really
  190. want to meet the guy and thank him for his music.

  193. I have a question... does moby pick the opening band?  Or does the
  194. record label?  I heard a VERY SMALL snippet of some of boom boom
  195. satellites music and i like what i heard.  However you can't judge a
  196. band on 30 seconds of music.  Anybody else know anything about them?

  201. If electronic music at the end of the century represents the
  202.  confluence of different styles, sounds, and beats from
  203.  around the globe, few acts embody that spirit of musical
  204.  convergence as do Boom Boom Satellites.

  206.  On their new Epic album Out Loud (US release 06/01/99),
  207.  Boom Boom Satellites showcase their mastery of
  208.  head-swirling rhythms, intense break-beats, classic hip-hop
  209.  scratching, driving rock guitar, kinetic drum 'n' bass, and
  210.  pulsing keyboard melodies. Combining those elements with
  211.  the experimental voyages of great jazz, they have produced
  212.  an exceptionally rich and unforgettable full-length debut.

  214.  Boom Boom Satellites are the Tokyo-based duo of
  215.  Michiyuki Kawashima (vocals, guitar, lyricist) and Masayuki
  216.  Nakano (bass, drums, DJ). The two joined forces in 1990
  217.  while attending college, inspired in equal measure by David
  218.  Bowie and Sigue Sigue Sputnick. They named themselves
  219.  Boom Boom Satellites after an SSS song and embarked
  220.  upon their musical expedition.

  222.  In 1995 the duo released a single, "Dub Me Crazy," which
  223.  was featured on a compilation by world-renowned
  224.  Japanese DJ Fumiya Tanaka. "Dub Me Crazy" garnered
  225.  considerable attention for Kawashima and Nakano in
  226.  Japan. In 1997, with the European release of "Dub Me
  227.  Crazy" and "For A Moment Of Silence," the duo earned
  228.  critical acclaim in such publications as Melody Maker, New
  229.  Musical Express, and Mixmag, and soon Boom Boom
  230.  Satellites were signed by Sony Japan.

  232.  The duo commenced their first European tour, including
  233.  appearances at such high-profile festivals as Glastonbury
  234.  and V-98 in the UK and Roskilde in Denmark. Unlike most
  235.  electronic acts, whose live performances are distinctly
  236.  secondary to their recordings, Boom Boom Satellites have
  237.  carefully crafted their live show from their inception.
  238.  Combining live drums and guitar with programming,
  239.  Kawashima and Nakano have raised the standard for what
  240.  electronic bands can do on stage.
  241.  
  242.  "Dance music's problem has always been the ability to
  243.  translate the vibrancy of the studio recording into a more
  244.  traditional live environment," Melody Maker wrote of the
  245.  BBS live experience. "Boom Boom Satellites have broken
  246.  this stereotype. Their live performance is so amazing that
  247.  they will turn the shortest set imaginable, leaving the place
  248.  gasping, squinting, like a hundred flash bulbs had popped in
  249.  front of the audience's faces."

  251.  Out Loud is a showcase for an artistry that transcends
  252.  boundaries. It's a record rife with ambition and purpose, with
  253.  all songs written, performed, and produced by Kawashima
  254.  and Nakano. Starting with the vocal and musical swells of
  255.  the Massive Attack-ish "Missing Note," (featuring a sample
  256.  from James Brown's "Say It Loud [I'm Black & I'm Proud]"),
  257.  Out Loud embodies a world in which technology has
  258.  rendered artistic borders irrelevant.
  259.  
  260.  "Batter The Jam No. 3" employs soprano sax, turntable
  261.  scratching, and programmed flute to create an ethereal
  262.  urban atmosphere. Yet there is nothing ethereal about "Push
  263.  Eject," a tough, aggressive, guitar-based track with an
  264.  anguished vocal by Michiyuki Kawashima.
  265.  
  266.  The group's love of jazz makes itself evident in "An Owl," in
  267.  which a hard-bop saxophone glides over kinetic techno
  268.  beats to create a vibe both warmly organic and coolly
  269.  futuristic. The trance-like effect of this track is soon broken
  270.  by the almost metallic crunch of "Oneness," with more
  271.  primal vocals from Michiyuki. "On The Painted Desert" is a
  272.  bittersweet soundscape featuring the Asuka Strings
  273.  entwining with bass, drums, and keyboards?perhaps the
  274.  most heart-stoppingly beautiful ambience on the record.

  276.  Out Loud has already met with warm praise from the
  277.  international music press. Melody Maker called it one of "the
  278.  most anticipated records of the year" and "an album to
  279.  make or break in '99." Future Music wrote: "This album is
  280.  exactly how contemporary music should be at this stage in
  281.  its evolution. Out Loud is destined to become a new musical
  282.  reference point." And Boom Boom Satellites have made
  283.  believers of their fellow artists: Performers as diverse as
  284.  Garbage, Josh Wink, Ken Ishii, and Locust have offered
  285.  their tracks for remixing by Kawashima and Nakano.

  288.  tour of the western United States, including a set at South X
  289.  Southwest in Austin which was the talk of the music industry

  321. Well the one time I had the pleasure of meeting Moby I gave him a belated
  322. thanks for the show of his that I attended about 2 years earlier and I
  323. told him how disappointed I was that I didn't get to meet him after that
  324. show and how *extremely* disappointed I was when I found out the day after
  325. that show that he did indeed stick around afterwards in the lobby.  His
  326. reply to that was (and I'm paraphrasing now since I've got the worst
  327. memory), "Oh I'm a loser (or I'm lame)....I always stick around after the
  328. show."  Awwwww....that was just too cute and I could only grin like a
  329. dork. :)  But, no, he's not a loser (or lame) for making himself 
  330. accessible to his fans and yes, I too am hoping to get a chance to speak
  331. briefly with him again after his shows (hopefully I'll get two chances if
  332. I can make it the Portland and Vancouver dates....:::crossing.fingers:::).

  532. Uh Oh.  Well according to the tour schedule at moby.org he is scheduled to
  533. play Portland on Aug. 7th at the Big Stink KNRK.  Does anyone know what
  534. that is (Big Stink KNRK)?  It's not another music festival is it?  Dang, I
  535. hope not....I really hate those, especially when they're put on by lame
  536. alterna-rock stations.
