On the side:
I've heard 3-4 songs from that new Chemical Bothers album. They sound
really good. I heard the on with the Oasis singer (not bad). Also, I
heard that "Hey girls ... Hey boys" song Sat. night on the radio
during some techno-spin 2 hour thingie. I've heard one other song that
I thought was good too but I can't remember ... sounds like the CBs
are doing OK.

I totally agree on LA Style's "James Brown Is Dead" This song has been
imitated/sampled even more than Moby's "Go" !!
Here are some other (non-Moby) titles that I consider Techno Classics:
- - Fierce Ruling Diva - Rubb it in
- - LFO - LFO
- - Digital Boy - Kokko
- - D-Shake - Yaaaaah + Technotrance + My heart the beat (to name a few)
- - 6 Bells All - Sweet & bitter
- - Westbam - Hold me back + Mayday anthem
- - B-Sides (Frank de Wulf) - Moral sound abuse + The tape
- - The Prodigy - Charly + Android (Firestarter+Breathe are *NO* techno!)
- - Speedy J - Pull over + Something for your mind
- - Overnite - The time has come
- - Toxic Two - Rave generator
- - The KLF - What time is love + Last train to trancentral
- - Praga Khan - Rave alarm
- - Gat Decor - Passion
- - D.O.P. - Groovy beat + Get out on this dancefloor
- - 2 Unlimited - (All their early releases!)
I could go on forever, but I think I already bored the shit out of you guys
so I'll stop here.

yeah, but it's not Techno.
Say, do any of you people with great memories remember a techno/rave
song based on/sampled from the Swartzenhager "Running Man" movie??
It went "It's time to start RUNNING!!" (Richard Dawson's voice)
then a woman sings "Did I dream, you dreamed about me. Did I dream,
you dreamed about me."
Who did that song?? It kicks butt.

Jayson, your answer is at the bottom of the message. But first...
Bart van Eijck wrote:

I would also include anything else from their _Experience_ album,
such as "Wind It Up", "Your Love", "Out Of Space", "Ruff In The
Jungle Bizness", and "Weather Experience". :)
> - Praga Khan - Rave alarm
So true! But I think "Injected With A Poison" is even more
classic. It put a huge grin on my face when I first heard it.
I don't recommend Praga Khan's new album, though. It stinks.
To add to your list (by no means completing it):
- - AB Logic - The Hitman, Get Up
- - Andromeda - Gaza
- - Anticapella - 2 square root of 231 (Ooh Ooh, I Love You, Baby)
- - Apotheosis - O Fortuna
- - Blue Pearl - (Can You) Feel The Passion
- - Bizarre Inc - I'm Gonna Get You, Playing With Knives (Quadrant Mix)
- - DJ Seduction - Hardcore Heaven
- - Human Resource - Dominator
- - Mental Distortion - Oz
- - Robert Miles - Children
- - Moby - Next Is The E (I Feel It), Go (Rainforest Mix), Drop A Beat,
All That I Need Is To Be Loved, Move
- - Orbital - Halcyon, Lush 3-1, Impact USA
- - The Shamen - Move Any Mountain, LSI (unknown remix that the DJs had)
- - Skin Up - A Juicy Red Apple
- - Space Master - I Need You
- - Two Little Boys - Stylophonia
- - U 96 - Das Boot (not the original, but a cool remix)
- - Underground Resistance - Jupiter Jazz
- - U.S.U.R.A. - Open Your Mind
- - Utah Saints - Something Good, What Can You Do For Me
- - Vapourspace - Gravitational Arch of 10
Okay, the above list is kind of silly because it mixes well-known
or overplayed techno-pop/house stuff with little-known masterpieces.
And there's a lot of stuff I like that's not on the list. This is
just what comes immediately to mind.
Remember way back in the day (c.1992) when so many evigorating
classic techno tracks were coming out but the mainstream scorned
"techno" (only to embrace "electronica" years later)... There
was a flash-in-the pan techno-pop hit called "Jump" by The
Movement. Funny how it's been forgotten (yes, it was disposable).
Some of the most exciting tracks I've ever heard I don't know the
names of, sadly. Do samples like "let the music o-pen up your
mind", "tomb on his pile" [?], "don't starve the river!" ring any
bells? Other tracks I like are purely instrumental and I can't
even describe them in a way that wouldn't be ambiguous with many
other songs. And then there are interesting songs that I'd just
like to collect. "Let your mind be your sun"... "Deborah... we've
come for you!"... "I gotta get out of here before I go mad! I'm
trapped. I'm trapped!"... "I am DJ God"... Hmmm, I guess it's
pretty cheesy of me to even like some of this anymore. ;)

It's time

RUNNING!!!
That's real love
You dreamed about me

The song is called "Temple of Dreams" and it's by Messiah. It's on
various compilations and Messiah's album _21st Century Jesus_ (which
also includes the classic track "There Is No Law" and other kickin'
music).

Dan, I noticed you pretty much listed all the songs on that 'Rave Til Dawn'
compilation that came out in 93. Am I right? I remember playing that CD to
death at parties, then getting tired of hearing 'O Fortuna' and 'Are U Ready
4 This?' at just about every major sporting event.
I had posted Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode before and was told they were not
techno. I guess I have a mind slip here. Are we assuming techno is a dancier
version of an electronic song? Just correct me if I'm wrong here. I remember
listening to electronic/techno/rave whatever we want to call it way back in
the early 1990's at my college. I remember getting acid house stuff from The
Lords of Acid and eventually buying their 'Lust' CD a while ago. In my
opinion, techno/electronica are the same thing. What did I miss?
Sorry to sound like an old fogey (I'm gonna be 28 next month... woo hoo),
but I come from the idea that if you play electronic music, you can call it
techno/electronic/whatever 'onic' you can come up with.

Ok, I might get flamed for this, but this is what I make of it. Techno
is now classified as cold no feeling music that just goes thump thump
thump with a few samples. Electronica is techno that people have put
emotion and feeling into, example: Moby. This is what I think the
difference is, even though it may be no difference for some people.

Thanks for the great info Dan! I'm gonna see if I can order that
Messiah album for "old-time's sake".
ALSO, a lot of the songs you mention, including "JUMP", are on a
compilation disk called "RAVE 'TIL DAWN" which was REALLY awesome back
in the day. I actually found the CD last year and bought it. SO, if
anyone wants a cassette copy let me know.
A small track listing:
- Two Little Boys: Stylophonia
- Movement: Jump
- (I think "James Brown is Dead")
- "Are you ready for THIS" (pretty decent remix version)
- "Injected with the POison" (forgot the artist)
that's all I can think of at the moment.

Heh. I'll be 28 on the 28th of June (just one little week away) and I
know what yer talking about. That RAVE TIL DAWN was the best little CD
a poor college kid could get their hands on.
I mentioned Depeche Mode wasn't techno/rave because I always
considered them the epitamy (sp?) of New Wave. They practically set
the mold in my opinion (hey, I still like their old stuff). I wouldn't
classify them into my techno category though. Definately electronic to
the bone.
All this talking about "OLDE SCHOOL" is getting me excited to pull out
some ANCIENT cds and listen to them tonight. Man, I'll probably think
they're crap, but it will be fun. I'll listen to them as I watch the
Knicks beat up on the Spurs!
