I haven't have time to write down thoughts for the reviews I promised
two days ago, so I'm just going to review a remix here and there without
actually covering the whole batch. For instance, I'll tell you about the
Moby mix of "I Talk To The Wind" by Opus II but not the Head mix. I
don't want to write about anything I can't bring to mind without fairly
high clarity.
Opus III - "I Talk To The Wind" (Moby Mix) (10:02)
(regarding this voice, if you have Orbital's album w/ Halycon, or one of
the Hackers soundtracks w/ that Orbital song, this is the same voice.
Orbital sampled a different song from the album that Moby remixed "I
Talk To The Wind" for.)
This mix is an ambient journey. The beatless sounscape is composed of
the singer's high, clear voice. Moby layers the vocal, making it a
steady ocean breeze gently relaxing you. His production gives her voice
a moderate synth/string feeling, akin to the "warm strings" that Bart
mentioned in the Fractal Zoom review. This mix only changes minutely,
subtle variations in the texture of the steadily repeating vocal breeze.
Like the Landed Mix of Fractal Zoom, the changes in sound seem to bubble
up slowly and recede almost unnoticeably. Unlike the Landed Mix, you
would notice these sounds when you walked in a room, but you would soon
adjust to them as part of your environment, and then you would only
notice them if they were turned off. Unless, of course, you were
deliberatley paying attention like I was. Very nice, if you like this
type of thing.
Pet Shop Boys - "Miserablism" (Electro Mix) (5:35)
This mix is divine. If you've heard Moby's remixes for Jam & Spoon, you
may already have an idea of what this sounds like. It's very light and
bright and airy. This mix feels like the sun is smiling at me. It is
happy and innocent, and definately among my top 5 Moby songs, remixes,
anything. I can't really describe the sound through specifics, only
metaphors. Candy. Just go get it. It's on certain "Was It Worth It"
singles.
Aerosmith - "Falling In Love (Is Hard On The Knees)" (Moby Fucked Mix)
(5:56)
Maybe it's just my taste, but this mix is annoying. Part of the problem
is the source material. This mix is made with a distorted guitar sample
that sounds grindy & dirty, which becomes tiresome alongside the vocal
sampling present. The beat sounds big-beat with the guitar overlay, but
my memory is a little foggy on the rhythym part, mainly because the
vocals violently captured my attention. It's a sample that loops
throught the whole song, nonstop, barring a short bassy breakdown. Moby
treated Steven Tyler's throaty scream to give it an tablesaw piercing
screech effect. It repeats through the whole song "Aing-o, no what I
want" I listened to this once myself and I play it for Aerosmith fans
who visit, and they don't like it much either. This mix is an aural
representation of a migraine headache.

Hello everybody,
=20
This is the last one in the series of reviews of Moby remixes for other =
artists.
Oh, _??_ still indicates that I have no idea whether they're still =
available..(mostly the 12" versions)
=20
Here are some reviews of Moby's remixes for Jam & Spoon (Stella) and the =
Prodigy (Charly/Everybody in the place):
=20
(THE COMPLETE) STELLA [Jam & Spoon, 1992] BE CD, R&S, RS 9203 CD
?? (THE COMPLETE) STELLA [Jam & Spoon, 1992] UK 12", R&S/Other =
Rhythm, RSUK 14X
=20
This 3 track CD has 2 moby mixes on track 2 and 3.=20
First about track 1 the [Original Mix 6:21], it's not a moby remix but =
what struck me after hearing it
the first time was that it was completely different from the version of =
Stella I knew... It includes vocal
samples of a womans sexy voice saying "hold me, love me", and it's more =
of a dance record than the
Stella I knew... But enough about that. The thing that struck me most =
about the [Original Mix] was
that it starts off with exactly the same beat as Moby's GO!!! Very soon =
other percussion is added
and you can't hear it's the beat from Go any more. Later in the song you =
hear a piece of the beat from
Go again.
=20
Track 2: [Barracuda Mix 6:37] Starts almost the same as the original =
but with a different beat. Like in Fractal Zoom Moby uses little bongo =
drum samples to give the track a bit of swing. The vocal samples that =
are used are the "hold me, love me", a strange (Indian like?) voice =
going "whohooohohahowheo" and a high pitched rap sample going "break =
down, break break down". And yes, right after that there's the =
breakdown, very short though, because the song almost immediately =
continues like it souded before. Through the whole mix Moby plays around =
with samples and improvises on his key-board on the 2 main chords of the =
song Stella. The mix is not really dancable, it's more a kind of "lay =
back and listen techno" Great music for a sunny spring day like today. =
(It's great weather for the time of year in Holland!)=20
=20
Track 3: [Electro Mix 5:41] Starts the same as the original, but soon =
the "whowohohaho" begins.
In the beginning of the mix there's no real beat, only drum roll after =
drum roll and an occasional hi-hat and cymbal. After 2 minutes of just =
melody and drum rolls the drum rolls stop and the beat starts.=20
After a few measures the drum rolls are mixed in, and at about 3:20 a =
hand clap is added building=20
a rhythmic and melodic tune. The end of the mix I love the most, the =
beat and other percussion fall
away together with the voice samples, leaving only an early '90's bleep =
sound with synth chords.
I wonder why it's called [Electro Mix].... It certainly has an =
electronic sound, but it's no electro...
=20
All in all, I think Moby did a great job remixing Stella!=20
=20
=20
CHARLY/EVERYBODY IN THE PLACE [The Prodigy, 1992] US CD, Elektra, =
66411-2
?? CHARLY/EVERYBODY IN THE PLACE [The Prodigy, 1992] US 12", Elektra, =
66411-0
=20
Only one Moby mix on this EP, but the single is a must for early 90's =
techno/house collectors
like myself. Here's a tracklisting:
=20
1 - Charly (Beltram Says Mix) 5:27 [ Great mix! One of Joey =
Beltrams better remixes ]
2 - Charly (Alley Cat Mix) 5:27
3 - Everybody In The Place (Dance Hall Version) 5:33 =
[ Moby's remix ]
4 - Everybody In The Place (Fairground Mix) 5:08
5 - Your Love (The Original Excursion) 6:00 [ Wow! =
breakbeats and bright piano! ]
6 - G-Force (Part 1) [ =
No further introduction needed I think ]
=20
Track 3: [Dance Hall Version 5:33] Credits: additional production & =
remix by Moby for MCT"
I don't know Moby did this on purpose but "dance HALL" <--> Richard M. =
HALL? funny....
Well, now for the mix itself... If you heard it, you wouldn't recognise =
it as a Moby remix. It's got
all the original Prodigy sounds in it and even a pounding breakbeat =
(combined with a normal beat)
No little bongo drums or sweet melodies this time, only hardcore synths =
and strong pounding beats.
In my opinion not one of his best remixes, but still a good hardcore =
techno breakbeat party track.

YES! they're fucking great. My favorite is they're self-titled,
blue-cover, debut album (SST records). 'Evol' & 'Sister' are like
classics to me.
A few of you are fortunate enough to receive advanced copies of 'Play'.
I think traffic will increase here when it becomes available
commercially (someone said June 1?)

Obviously, you live on the east coast...west of the Mississippi, we
regularly pay upwards of 1.40 for gas, and that's the cheap, 7-11
gas...Chevron, shell, and Sinclair charge more....
Take the gas-out one step further....don't buy anything at a gas
station/convenience store...no soda, no candy, no gas, no nothing!
