Subject: (mobility) DJ Cake "Sugar Baby / Found A Way"
For Geoffrey and everybody else:
"Sugar Baby" is slow, dark techno. It has a cold, underground feel to
it, and it's fairly minimal and repetitve. The beat is a thick, heavy,
deep pound that is very simple, no complex beats here, just thump,
thump, thump, thump,.... There's a tinny cymbal that drops in time with
the beat. Very, very slowly, new elements get added in to the song.
After about two minutes, the vocal (either Eh, Ay, or Hey, a high
pitched female voice sample) gets an slight reverb/echo. The voice sound
thing drops in on the first beat per measure, without fail. Around 4
minutes in, a bongo sounding drum w/ a quiet echo starts getting dropped
between beats, and there's this very, very quiet deep quiet vacuum
(think of a crippled single tone version of the "Feeling So Real"
vacuum) in there with the bongos, and now, at about 9 minutes, there's
some clapping tossed in covering the 2nd and 3rd beat per measure...
Everything is echoing, building it's way up higher in volume...and it's
over. Seconds pass. Now it's started again. Not over after all. Now the
whole song is starting again, but it's being layered and built up a lot
faster now, back to where it was when the music ended. It's about 11:30
and now there's an electronic organ dropping some funky tinkling around.
The beats are gone, and now the organ is playing some gothic
Transylvanian video game ambient music. The organ has become disoriented
and melancholy, and now it IS over.
I Found A Way just started and it reminds me of "Bring Back My
Happiness." It's got the same echoey, dark elements as "Sugar Baby", but
the they're put together with a faster beat, more flourishes, like
double claps, vocal effects on every beat now, a whole line "I found a
way!" some "oh-OH-oh-OH-oh" This one is much happier and busier! Hard
techno. This song does a lot more than Sugar Baby, but it's not a voyage
like that one is.
This single is great if you're a big Moby fan. You'll hear sounds and
effects you recognize from other Moby tunes but you can't quite pick out
in "I Found A Way." "Sugar Baby" is a cold, hard, driving techno song
that is slow, persistent, methodical. It's not unhappy, but it's not
happy either. It is repetition, it is progress. It is a workday in a
factory. "I Found A Way" is the same worker after work, driving home,
working up some fun energy, bleeding off the tense energy, less focused,
happier, but still the same elements. This single is not for everybody,
but for Moby fans who enjoy Early Underground's cold, dark moments. If
you like dark, heavy sounds, you'll like this. Clocks in at about 20:20.
The packaging is a European slimline case, with a flourescent blue cover
with flourescent pink letters in large, blocky, plain text. Also pink is
the Moby drawing (evil ninja / little idiot style drawing) which has the
cartoon guy hoding a trophy and wearng a "T" shirt. He has a round spike
on his head, he looks like a condom. He's standing on the word "Trophy!"
Curiously the minimal liner info includes LES/NYC and Wake Up. Anybody
know what that means? Do you think Moby sampled Laurent Garnier? Do you
think he made the track in both New York and France? What else could it
refer to besides the Wake Up Studio? The music is vaguely hypnotic,
maybe it's some kind of joke.
Until next time,
- -Steve

So, does anybody want to take up the challenge of describing

in a weird way this is moby related. its stoopid, but its too amusing not
to share:
You all know I write. Or at least i might have said so in passing once
or twice. Over the snow days we had up here in toronto last week i decided
that i needed to challenge myself and put my latest novel on hold and try
something
new. a play.
anyway, i wrote it, blah blah blah... and i sent the first act to my dear
boi whom i adore to pieces and his response was:
The character Matthew. is that supposed to be Moby?
I re-read the first act. it IS moby. this is scary. MOBY IS TAKING OVER
MY BRAIN!!! AGGGHHHHHH!!!!! and i wasn't even listening to moby as i wrote
it. i was sacreligious and was listening to Richie Hawtin *drools on the
keyboard* instead.
I dunno... tis trivial but i found it really amusing. I'm so obsessed with
moby
that i subconsiously put him in my work. ack! Please. Someone tell me I'm
not the only one who's done this. i'm sure LOTS of people model characters
after moby because he's so damn cool. anyone??? :)

It was good... but I must admit I wasn't paying attention until the DJ
mentioned who it was. I hesitate trying to describe it because, like I
said, I wasn't paying attention. =\

Subject: (mobility) v.c. & michael jackson/eno remixes
I got really used to Voodoo Child being the somewhat darker side of Moby
until I heard EOE 2 years ago. EOE suprised me as it is considerably
more mellow & calm than previous V.C. releases. Don't get me wrong, I
adore EOE but before that, I was listening to DEMONS/HORSES almost
everyday while I cleaned my apartment. That single is amazing; it
really captures the mood of feeling strung out at some warehouse at 4:30
in the morning (an activity which I no longer participate in).
In 1991, when I was 16, I went to my first rave party. I heard a
Michael Jackson remix which I believe was Moby's (DJ's seemed to be so
much more open minded back then...I remember this really nice japanese
guy at this club who was mixing pink floyd's 'On the Run' with a beat
record...something I don't hear so much these days). I've never heard
that Moby - MJ remix since and looked everywhere for it. Does anyone on
the list have that one? Or heard it? I'd like to hear it again. Also, I
listened to his Eno remix at a record shop once but then the owner
kicked me off the decks after about a minute into the song. A minute
into a techno song...well, you might as well never have listened!
Steve Giles, how do you like Eno's MFA? MLITBOG (featuring David Byrne)?
later,

sorry kelly.. you're alone on this one!!!
no, just kidding. i dunno... since i don't write as much as i use to, i
don't subconsciously put moby in my work. but, my friends say i'm
obsessed. but that's friends for ya, they'll say anything. my brother
gets annoyed because i mostly play moby at home and in the car, and
second to that right now is ani difranco (which he gets annoyed at as
well). so, you're not the one obsessed one... you just show it
differently.
OK.. lemme ask this for all of the US ppl over here. do u think moby
would kick butt on Politically Incorrect (right now this show is my
current obsession). i went to audition for the show a couple of weeks
ago, but the auditions were full before i even got there (i was very
pissed that day... very pissed). i've had this thought that moby should
be on the show because i know he would kick butt with those ppl who
think that animals are meant as food and blah blah blah! (one panelist
even said that about animals.. and that they don't have souls.. but
don't get me started on this) so, whatcha think? think he should be on
the show?

um ok uh....
dave the wave ocasionally sends out his playlists, whenever he feels
like it. his email address is beatweek@aol.com, just ask him to send
you the playlists. and ask him about moby, tho he never answered me,
soo i dont know....last night his show wasnt that hot. he had some
guest dj playing "acid bass" i didnt stick around. i was bored. i
listened to a mixtape i made for my friend at wpkn yesterday.
also, dave like never answers his email. the only time he ever
answered me (besides like sending playlists) was when i asked about a
bootleg jungle remix of a song by Monica (you know the rnb singer)
that he played a few times. i asked him to play it so i could get it
on tape.
i dont think he played itt last night tho. he didnt play it first 2
hours, and the last 2 well its not exactly "acid bass" so whatever. he
also said hechose the mix for that "plastic ccomilation 2" cd, which
has the two phat cunts song by bt aand sasha. he plays that a lot
actually.
check out wired magazine for the article on "futurama". kix asssss. bye

not sheist it.
but hey....that's a good idea
just let everybody tape it
