Yeah, U2, REM (which just happened to come up on the radio !!!), RBF, LTJ,
Pilfers, Joy Division (which explains why i wanna re-do NDF), Aquabats,
Blues Traveller, etc.

my problem with the term is that it is entirely overused and limiting, such
as "an electronica artist by trade does not write punk rock songs"
technically its a truth, but it is rather vauge: what is an electronica
artist? what is a punk rock song,exactly?

Question for the list: does anyone know of any software that will allow
one to read an audio DAT from a SCSI-based DAT drive?  If we can find
something that does that, no problem - I can read the DATs.  However,
unless we can find that utility - I'm sort of hosed.  Any ideas?

Then again, I may also be able to get some time in a studio via school,
but I'd prefer to see what I can do with the (computer-based) DAT here.

1st thing first: I love having heavy traffic on this list. It keeps this
'place' colorful and interesting, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Somebody
mentioned that we have a new list member who writes more that the rest
combined. Well, I felt like that person for a while. The lone pencil.

I think that one live song is Wonderbread. He does it live frequently.

I'm glad to see somebody is using "No Buttons To Push"  Do you have the 12"
or did the file we made find it's way to you?

GEOFFREY, pay attention!!! I told you already that 75% of the information
you keep asking us about is at www.moby.org , and I also told you that
Underwater can be bought at Mutebank and it comes along w/ Everything Is
Wrong Limited. And the compilation status has been stated in no less than
ten messages.  Sorry to bite, but this is pretty straightforward obvious
stuff. Don't be so helpless, all you need to put forth is a *little* bit of
effort.

My listening range is wider than average compared to the public at large,
narrow compared to many on this list. Here's some favorites, starting with
the obvious. Moby, U2, Underworld, Aphex Twin, New Order, Josh Wink,
Westbam, Radiohead, Black 47, Tupac, Red 5, Guy Called Gerald, Berlin, Beck,
Donovan, David Bowie, Peter Paul & Mary, Plastikman, Daft Punk, Tears For
Fears, Clash, Joy Division, and more. I like classical string arrangements,
too

Pretension and righteousness are both the best of friends and the worst of
enemies. My opinions on the two are irrelevant, yet I will say that truth
can outshine them both.

No DAT entries. See previous mobility message from Greg Shipley.

Is anybody on mobility getting some good use out of the new links directory
at moby.org? Let me know privately, there's no spare room on the list. If
yes, I'll make it an ongoing thing and keep it current. I've already got a
few loose ends that belong there.

Actually, it's more because playing it on winamp through the sound card,
even though it's being converted to analog (stereo review and numerous other
publications have done dozens of tests, especially when SMTP was new,
comparing DAD transfers, and their conculsion was, even after 12
generations, they could not determine a difference between the original and
the clones), it is receiving the full benefit of WinAmp's (or anyother mp3
player) sound expansion/compression technology to compensate for compressed
frequencies. It's been my experience that when you write as wav, you lose
that feature, hence the degradation. But then, I haven't even been able to
*locate* that feature on WA1.9 or 2.01, so I haven't done any tests with it
in a while.

I decided to get off my butt and start looking into this.  A good source
for anyone interested is the "DAT-heads" mailing list.  Check out FAQs,
digests, etc. at :

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a definitive answer.  Some
MAYBEs, and some NOs.  I found the below message (in the archive)

They definitely can't play directly through an audio connector (built
in cheap DAC), but there is a (Conner) drive on the market with a
proprietary firmware modification by Silicon Graphics which will do
extract the audio through SCSI and play/rec it in real time. Something
like extracting audio over SCSI with a Plextor CD-ROM.
