Now wait, that's not true. If there's anything mp3s are useful for
it's for easy transfer over the net. If it took three hours to
upload a WAV, it would take you about 20 minutes for a 192 kbps
enocoded version...estimating somewhere around a 33.6 modem.
Decoding the MP3 takes less time than playing the track even with
a slower system, and it's extremely simple. Winamp can write
files output to WAV even, it's easy as changing one setting.
And l3dec for dos couldn't be easier and it's easy to get free.
and from going from whatever format to MP3 back to .WAV, some quality
> may be lost.

Perhaps, but IMO it's not enough to matter. I'm thinking this
would be best for people without burners to make cd-rs, and I
know I would like to use this way to submit my song.
> Greg, please let us know what format you would like to see most of.
I know several small labels that even use mp3s to get songs on
cd projects, they are doing just that now on the goa trance mailing
list I'm on, nearly eveyone submitted in mp3 and a small label is
going to be financing it. The difference here is people needed to
vote and used mp3s for that too because they had enough material
for over 7 cds full of music altogether. And believe me with all
the constant arguing over cd vs. vinyl sound quality, these people
are very picky about it and pretty much all agreed that 256 was
pro quality.
I would image that we will have a much bigger problem with certain
tracks having more hiss and hum noise due to many different mediums,
recording processes and equipment. We also have a real need to get
all the tracks normalized with each other and then mastered together
by someone who has some real experience mastering, I don't really
know anyone personally- but it contributes more to the quality of the
overall project than any of these other things.

hello...
I'm a little old-fashioned I guess. Is it possible just to send in a DAT of
the song that I'm going to do? I understand about normalizing the format so
the CD doesn't sound lopsided, however, at this time there's really no other
way for me except DAT. I've a friend who can cook me a CD from the DAT but
is that an unnecessary stage? comments?
take care. I hope we can all figure this beast out.

Hi list,
I've been gone for a long time and I'm sure no one remembers me. I
am interested in the "comp" everyone is talking about but I haven't
had time to catch up on the tons and tons of emails that I've saved
for the past 6 months. Can some one fill me in privately? I am also
wondering if the comp that someone was talking about six months ago
is the same one that's being worked on now?
Thanks in advance,

Do I really need to remind everyone of the horror that was Joe's

because Moby is in it doesn't mean it's automatic Oscar material.
*shudder*
I think I'll be hiding in my closet on the 27th. I've already been through
enough
torture the last time I sat through a "movie" to see Moby.
Actually... just while on the topic of music & movies, did anyone ever see
Hang the DJ?
Was it actually a decent flick or was it just mindless hype, just like
everything is right

I realized that I just sorta jumped in to this Mobility thing and never
introduced myself... so...
*stands up*
hey peeps... I'm Kelly from Canada, eh. Right now in Ontario but heading
out to the west coast as soon as I'm done highschool. Why? Because
the scene is dying out here and I'm surrounded by mindless hacks and
pathetic wannabes. I'm loosing my mind. I need a reality check. To anyone
who cares I'm a
lacto-vegetarian... I was vegan for a while but i got sick. But i still
refuse to eat eggs. But that's a story for another day.
I got into Moby a while ago. I was introduced to his work by the boy I
adore to pieces ( which is partly because of his kickass taste in music).
My first
album was Everything Is Wrong, and it remains my fave to this very day. I
now have quite a large Moby collection, and it grows every time I can track
down anything new. I've introduced a lot of peeps to Moby, some of them
caught on, others didn't, but no one has yet to obtain the obsessive level
fandom that i've reached *blush*.
Oh yeah. Aside from Moby some of my faves include: Aphex Twin,
Plastikman, Lamb, Crystal Method, NOFX, Bad Religion, nine inch nails
(trent
just cut his hair. DAMMIT! that bites. and where the heck is the new
album? eh?), Pop
Will Eat Itself, Shotgun Messiah, Skold, KMFDM, Rammstein, Limp Bizkit,
Econoline Crush and a few others... I love drum and bass and happy
hardcore *grin* and my fave colour of glostick is red. My fave DJ is
Anabolic
Frolic, but I doubt that means anything to anyone outside of the Greater
Toronto
Area. Hehehe... I guess
i'm the resident raver gurl around here. Anyone else into the scene?
I do remixes and write music in my spare time and I'm about half way
through
my second full length novel. No, I'm not published, nor would I like to
be. Personally,
I think there's a lot more important things for a 17 year old gurl to be
doing than shopping
around pieces of her heart and soul. I do vocals for an experimental
technoish band,
who's name is very tongue in cheek and I don't really care to share it here
:P
Right this very minute I have God is a DJ by Faithless stuck in my head and
its been there for weeks. Blah. But still, cool song. Oh yeah. I might
as
well come clean that I have a bit of an obsession with 80's synth pop, but
hey, we all have our quirks.
Oh yeah. Is it just me or does the lead singer of the New Radicals sorta
look like
Moby? Maybe it's the shaved head but... i dunno... Actually, I think it
is the
shaved head and nothing really more... he doesn't look like Moby nearly as
much as
this one guy who works at the local WalMart...
Hmm... back to me. Well, actually there's not too much else to know about
me. I think I'll
go back and lurk in the shadows until I feel like making another post.
Peace. Luv. Unity.
Respect.

anyway, the comp we are talking about is vol.2 of the tribute to moby.
Thanks1 was finished this past spring. we are trying to get another cd
together and organized after the initial producer bailed. it seems to be
coming along well. if you would like to submit a track for the comp, keep
your eyes peeled on the list for info. greg is the one in charge now.

I have tracked several mp3's off the net and transfered them to DAT by
playing them on WimAmp through my PC's sound card. Those sound every bit as
good as a cd. But if you try to use WinAmps' decode to *.wav feature, you
will face a degradation of sound.

hmmm
i am really wondering who's doin the page with a list of contributees to the
comp/want to see it. i may as well mention in my confusion that i've still
been workin on hymn.
until the other day i barely worked on a honey remix. i have about three
very simelar yet different versions of hymn all with guitar and the
other two more electronic. i've been a little hesitant to work on drop a
beat too. hopefully no one else'll chose it.
i remember that Ryu sent a list a while ago. if anybody has it, please post
it.
just out of cureosity...
anyone know of any good qual ity freeware mp3/wav converter?(i wrote this
yesterday [offline] and had to opt not to send it seing as i was runing late
4 a wedding and had to catch a train).
umTomorrow last week was my 21'st birthday and i ended up going to some club
i've never heard of at exactly 12:00 that morning. i remember the only moby
song i heard was sis&rolo bliss's honey . if i had known that the guy (jeff
moyer) i met up in the dj booth was actually some guy who knows who i am
since he has had two of my cd's for like a year because of my friend down
there, i would probably have gone thru his shit and made him play mo moby
and other good stuff i know of. nxt time i guess.blah blah bla
so the reason i'm writing i suppose would be to share a memory of last years
birthday:(keep in mind it ain't my story-tiz my friend's. don't be too
confused though, the gift was for me and he got himself one too:)
last year for a birthday gift, a bar/club-hopping friend of myne gave me a
what(?)36x48"ish animal rights promo poster he tore off a wall at dome
room(chicago club). moby was there promoting his Animal Rights album and he
was upset. he(moby) was if not/almost literally crying cuz he thought
nobody really cared about (him ?) his new album. he couldn't be more wrong.
little did he know-people were standing in a line that wrapped around an
entire (downtown) block just to be there for moby's promo. to see him. so
anyways my friend got my and his posterZ autographed. it was kind of
neat-on his poster moby drew his little caricature only it looked like a
caricature of my friend because of the hair moby drew. on myne, it had my
hair. it's weird? i guess you or others can say my hair is strange and the
fact that moby's little autograph-imeen drawing resemble me besides the fact
i wasn't there-it's just weird as hell:) my friend told me more as he was
at an afterhrs. party with moby that night, but i'm too sick and tired to
remember anymore. he was crying tho-
idunno for some reason and others too this little storie+gift made my like
moby much much more. believe it if you do.
not that you care, but since i've turned 21, somebody called me a frog.
i am not a frog. never will be. ima tadpole.
as for t2-i still hope somebody who saves old mail can post -oh
yeah!!!!!!!!!! archives!:
well i just looked in the archives and my fever is commanding me to go back
to bed so i can recoop again. sick sucks. suck sick suck.
so if anybody has ryu's post with the not so current listing of track
submits of t2, post it to mobility?.. maybe i'm just imagining that it
exhists. idunno

Subject: (mobility) Moby vs. "cd clubs"
Question for you all:
What's the general opinion of places like Columbia House or any other mail
order
CD clubish type things? I'm constantly getting harassed by them through
the mail and I was
shocked to find Moby CDs (along with a bunch of my other fave bands) being
sold through their catologues. Personally I hate these businesses with a
passion, because
no money goes back to the artist on these "get 10 cds for a penny" deals.
But
then I guess the people who buy from these companies, knowing that they're
ripping
off artists, are the same people who download mp3s
'cause their too cheap to buy an album. So what would you guys do? Buy
Moby
stuff from one of these mail order *scams* err companies slightly cheaper,
or buy it in a *real*
music store so he actually gets some money for his efforts? Anyone? Maybe
these
practices are changing, and artists are being compensated... but I dunno.
Eeek. Thinking
about it now, the same could go for used CDs. Hmm... maybe I'll have to
re-examine
my buying habits. blek. PLUR.

I don't like CD clubs for one reason...it takes far too long to get the
CD's.
As for the artists not getting compensated, I rationalize that by the fact
that I've bought at least 10 CD's at the regular store for each I've ordered
through a club.
As for Moby, I bought all his stuff at the regular store, because I couldn't
wait 2-4 weeks to hear it. And, with him, because he's not a huge volume
seller, I feel like I should buy his CD's where I know he's gonna get his
fair share.

columbia has finally figured out that people might buy a cd once in
awhile if they are not sent shit that they didn't order
because of not sending in some dumb card that says
please don't send me nothin.
but since they purchase in such bulk you can get good deals on almost
everything even though it might not be the latest squarepusher (but
then who needs that? tight tight but i giv dat chit away....
whoever wants it.....actually it ain't that bad but whatizzit?)
i like columbia for buying classical and catching up on some older
stuff.......
so my purchases are half classical
1/3 jazz and one third
alterno-dance-pop type stuff
and yes they have moby, erasure, and if any of you like hearing
something different
they have the most painfully romantic album i know of
patricia kaas'
tour de charme
this record would cost you almost 20 bucks in a store most likely
special ordered
and you can get it as one of your introductory selections if you
e-mail me i'll give you order no.
she sings in french with 1 song in english
and is considered the french madonna
but i think she's way deeper (and not that madonna
is something to sneeze at).
it's just no one has quite put the LUV in love the way kaas has on
this record>
and her new one is just kickin my ass lately as well.......and
is tough to find.
let's face it there's a big world of sound out there and you gotta get
adventurous
if you're ever gonna know
adventure.
