hey fellow "honey" freaks. i just got a ton of stuff in the
mail from a super cool girl. sometimes i love being a college
radio dj! free stuff rules! anyway, here's all what i got:
moby - honey - promo - 12" (PL12MUTE218)
side a: moby's risk mix
moby's dark mix
side b: westbam & hardy hard mix
moby's 118 mix
moby - honey - 12" (12MUTE18)
side a: rollo & sister bliss remix
side b: sharam jey's seewt honey mix
low side mix
moby - honey - promo - CD (PCDMUTE218)
1. honey
2. the aphrodite & mickey finn mix
3. rj's mix
4. bammer's mix
5. westbam & hardy hard mix
6. 118 mix
moby - honey - remixes - CD (LCDMUTE218)
1. rollo & sister bliss blunt edit
2. moby's 118 mix (raido edit)
3. westbam & hardy hard mix
4. aphrodite & mickey finn remix
i also got 2 stickers of the pumpkin with names of a few
remixes on the back, and a really big black t-shirt with a
small pumpkin on the front and the words "moby - honey" on top
of the back.
i will now attempt to tell you about all this stuff in detail
and add the the mass of "honey" reviews:
first off, the original version of "honey." this song was NOT
at all what i had expected! i knew it was going to be more big-
beat-esque, but...honkey-tonk paino?! this thing STOMPS!! the
vocals go perfectly with the trashy feel of the piano and
slide/wah-wah guitar. it's a slow one for moby, around 100 or
105 bpm's i'd guess. the only vocals i can make out are "can my
honey some back, sometimes" "way down yonder, sometimes" and
"come on over here, sometimes." there is also a diva-like
shout, but i dunno what it's saying. basically, it's a down-
south-on-the-back-porch-hand-clappin'stomp!
the aphroditie & mickey finn mix is a d&b mix. it's a bit slow
for d&b, and only uses a bit of the vocals and piano. oh! and i
forgot to mention the usual thick moby strings. there's a small
part in which they are used in the origional, and they are also
used here a bit. otherwise, it's pretty much a different song.
next is rj's mix.
this is more of a pitched up big beat version. kind of like
crystal method, only not so hard and squeltchy. a bit spacey,
it uses the vocal sample a bit, but only in small sections. i
like the use of the strings in the break down, but little else
can be said. not bad, just a bit boring.
bammer's mix starts off with the vocals a bit slowed down, then
punches into some d&b beats. nice and fast. the vocals are used
thoughout the song, but little else happens.
the wesbam & hardy hard mix starts off with some booty-style
beats, but when that bassline starts up, weee! then the vocals,
and that wonderful panio!! you can't help but move to this one.
it's a bit repetitive up till the break, then really kicks in
with added drums. a bit too booty shakin' for me, but it's
still nasty and fun!
moby's 118 is very "james bond theme" at first. same beat,
different drum sounds. then the piano and vocals come in, just
like the origional. i don't know why the other remixers don't
use more of the piano line...it's so cool! this mix adds a
tweeky bass line mid-way though and is faster, hence the "118"
mix.
it builds up and breaks down a few times, and that's about all.
moby's risk mix is back to our normal moby. actually, it's a
bit old-skool in it's sounds. a real cheesey synth pad and bass
are used mainly. the drums are tradidtional moby kick-ass
techno. this one is really repetitive, adding crashes, vocals
and a siren-like sound as it chuggs along. your basic punch-in
punch-out kind of mix. good.
the dark mix is even faster! VERRRRRRRY HARD!!
moby is the king of kick-ass techno drums. this starts off with
the drums and adds a crunchy bass line. a bit like "bring
back..." at first. this is even more repetitive than the risk
mix. it uses only the "way down yonder/can my honey come back"
sample.
the rollo & sister bliss mix is more of your traditional house
tempo. it's pretty spacey, starting off kind of big/break beat,
it then kicks into a speed garage/house groove and soon moves
AGAIn to a more blissful trance. it uses some of the vocal
sample and diva bits and maybe some guitar parts, but i'm not
too sure. too many break-downs really make this one lag. when
it's going, it's nice and floaty, but it never really KEEPS
going. if you ask me, after this and "god is a dj" (their last
single) i'm losing faith in them. heh...
sharam jey's sweet honey mix is your basic US style house. this
is one of those made-for-lame-dj's-mixes. it's kind of light
and fluffy, but still hard enough to dance to. it has very
litte, if nothing, to do with the origional. just you basic
run-the-sample-though-a-filter-for-4-minutes track.
and, FINALLY, the low side mix by moby.
another house track, and another dj friendly mix. however, this
one has a neat sounding bassline. really pongy and bouncy. this
one reminds me of his hymn remixes. really open sounding and
very repetive. pretty mellow and nice.
i left out the blunt mix and 118 edit 'cause they are basicly
just shorter versions.
so there you have it! if you actually read all that i am truly
amazed, and thank you!
the only thing i don't have are the mario caldato jnr. remix,
"micorniesia" and "memory gospel" tracks. anyone got these?
could you let me know what they're like?
later,

Kickass review, Xaq!
I bought my sister EIW for the car, now I got my FSR & Maximum Electronica
back from her. I think she's hooked, like me. From country to Bjork to Moby,
(in that order) I think she's becoming diverse. Hooray!
The Pork Guys thing is a funny parody. You can hear how much fun they're
having. They mock the political punk thing, opening w/ "This is for an
American hero.....Jean-Luc Picard!" They also have the sung-way-too-fast
song, the offensive song (Fuck Xmas! Fuck You!), & the song about a girl.
Terrible music. Someone said it sounds like a bad Misfits ripoff. I dunno. I
funny novelty item, but I wouldn't recommend it. It has no redeeming musical
value, whatsoever. I like the vinyl, tho, it's smoky-brown-transparent.
Eddie "Flashin" Fowlkes, who did an ATINITBL mix, is spinning at a rave here
soon. I like his mix, if I see him, I'll tell ya what I think.
If anybody is interested in the Fractal Zoom US CD, new, $5, let me know. If
you want a Next Is The E US 12", mail me w/ an offer. (latter inc. Victory
mix, no picture sleeve)
I've tracked down someone who reviewed Sounds Of The South, and I'm awaiting
a response regarding Bessie Jones' contributions. As far as I know, that is
the only Atlantic release w/ her appearing. Who knows, maybe I'll get lucky
and find some lyrics. Anyone want to join me in the search for info? Good
search strings include folk, roots, blues, try different combos w/ records,
store, music. I guess that 4CD is generally in found in the subcategory
"Country Blues".
Yahoo! I finally found the 2CD for Come On Baby, and the Barracuda on C.T.
Anybody else out there "actively" collecting right now? I just missed an
auction for AR Live, that sucks. At eBay there's two JBT w/ audio bios for
sale. One at $5, on at .99 cents. Some people...
Enjoy your Labor Day weekend and drink lots of bber!

fukkin spin doesnt have an internet archive. so can anyone who has
lots of old SPINs lying around theyre house just list a bunch of bad
reviews from SPIN? thanks.....

The B-52s have just released a single for their time-capsule release that
has various remixes on it, including Moby's Schottische mix. It's a major
release & your local corporate vendor will have it in the singles section.
It's a high-priced single at 6.99 w/ 6 or 7 tracks, all together. I just
ordered it on 12", I would've just got this if I'd known, instead of
waiting. Oh well. I'll let everyone know about it when I get it, I'm just
glad it's more accessible now.
I don't suppose anybody knows if the Mighty Dub Katz' song "Magic Carpet
Ride" is a house cover of Steppenwolf's?

Honey 2 = 1.99Pounds
Shipping: 2.50Pounds
6.48 Pounds = 10.86 Dollars, US at least according to the currency transfer

went to NYC today and bought my Moby "honey" singles..here's what i thought
"honey"- very nice, unexpected, but i managed to bop my head on my way home in
the car.
"honey" ( rollo and sister bliss blunt edit)- real nice but too short. maybe
they got bored of playing the song
"honey"- westbam & and hardy hard mix- could do without but still enjoyable.
"honey"- aphrodite & mickey finn remix-
Then I got the other "honey" cd with micronesia and memory gospel:
micronesia- phat as hell, love it and would play it anywhere anytime
memory gospel- liked it for the first 4 minutes then it got repetitive. still
good to hear some new moby stuff.
i also picked up two moby vinyls: "everytime you touch me "( it has some
remixes for that competition they had back in the day), and "honey", with
three other remixes which i have not listened to yet.

By the way, i do believe SPIN did review AR, but I can't remember the
details. I think they gave it a 7 or something like that. SPIN has a
book out that lists all their reviews in easy-to-find format by artist.
Just find it, look up Moby, and you're in business. It's in any
Waldenbooks store.

was it a seven they gave it? i think it was closer to four, i remember
reading it and being pretty pissed cause i thought it was a really good
album. oh well, it's probably best just to stick with your own feelings on
music anyway.

The ETYTM 12"-is that the one with the Tabernacle remix? That thing
*rocks*, it totally should have won the competition...

I've emailed him a couple times and said something on the list before too
but no response from him. He still posts to the list every now and then so
I'm sure he's reading this. Yeah, I'd like my video or my money back. I
know it was only $6 or whatever, but it's mostly the principal of the
matter. Screwing people around like that isn't a good idea--esp. when
we've got your name and email address, etc.

Why anyone would want to consult SPIN, especially in the last 2 years of
the
magazine's tenure, I will never know!!! SPIN is one of the worst
magazines
out there for music, half of it isn't even centered around music:
fashion
spreads, celebridy(actors, etc) intereviews, movie reviews and computer
shit.
I'm glad I let my subscription run out!!! These are the people that
gave
Radiohead's OK Computer the #1 spot of the year and then next month in
an
article accuses them of pandering to the critics instead of making
popular
music!!!! SPIN has done nothing but get worse over the 3 years that I
subscribed to it. Not only that but the utter lack of reviews of decent
new
music like moby, crystal method, orbital, etc, is proof that they no
longer
really care about music or the quality of thier work but how many full
page
glossy ads they can shove down my throat. No thanks SPIN, if I wanted
post-modern banter I would consult 17 magazine
