I was reading a little bit last night about O. Henry, the American writer
who is best known for the surprise endings on his short stories. I came
across two interesting things that relate to Moby. The first is that they
share the same birthday--Sept. 11. The second is that O. Henry (real name
William Porter) had a good friend named Richard Hall that he lived with for
sometime.
Nothing big, but just thought I'd share. Maybe it'll come up on Jeopardy
sometime.

What's wrong with moby's newer ambient material?
Why doesn't newer orb material fit in?
what is the deal?

Thanks! The hardest part besides the long tedium of the manual conversion
will be just figuring out what his format is. I guess I'll have to grab
a few of his discographies and study them. Are his discographies so
precise that they are parsable (sp?) by a program? Also, I'd like to
preserve things like release dates. Doesn't Lazlo include only the year?
Any suggestions/advice is welcome.

hey i experienced another case of deja vu recently...
just the other day i went to the goodwill store to pick up some tapes.
i found the single for "cantaloop" by Us3 (jazzy hip hop, like A Tribe
Called Quest, big hit 5 years ago). and i also got some blank tapes.
so i go home and i listen to the single. then i pop in a blank tape,
and you'll never guess the first song i heard...."cantaloop" by us3!
crazy....
sorry this is non-moby. but 2 deja vu's (or whatever) in 2 days!
whatever....

Don't bother looking in US stores yet. Not for Honey, anyway.
It's out on Monday in the UK. It'll take more time to get imported =
here. If
you want to mail order it, you can pre-order here:
Pre-order Honey here, UK vendor, also carries AR
http://www.replay.co.uk/
Let me tell you about a couple of the promo-only mixes.
- -Moby's Risk Mix is a housey jam w/ two synth riffs overlaying =
boom*tiss
drums. One of the synth riffs has a brass-like sound to it. It also has =
this
quickly repeating siren noise in it, and it only uses the fisrt line of =
the
vocals, "When My Honey Come Back..." This is a fun mix. Risky as in =
playful.
- -Moby's Dark Mix uses a slowed down BBMH beat w/ an Underworld sounding
riff. (comparable to something on second toughest) although the =
structure of
the mix is nothing like UW, of course. This song, which uses a vocal =
sample
of "hey down, yah", would be excellent for a car racing video game. Not =
a
dark mix as in brooding, but maybe dark as in urban or subterranean. =
It's
not unhappy, tho.
- -Westbam & Hardy Hard's mix starts off w/ a bass-drone-roll which =
reminds me
of trhe start of the gonstermacher longer mix of Wink's Simple Man. The
piano riff that is in most of the Honey mixes is set in the song and =
played
in a way that gives it a very honkeytonk feel. Don't cringe, it works =
very
well actually, and this mix is very danceable. The vocals have a fading
echo, as well. Thie music in this mix is constantly being broke down, =
and
kicked back in, and the energy seems to be held just under climax for =
the
whole song till it all goes nuts in the end. These Mayday members =
always
satisfy.
- -Moby's 118 Mix is my initial favorite along w/ his Original Mix. The =
vocals
are very well layered, giving the song a feel that it's "being sung" as
opposed to sampled. Sort of. At various points in this mix there is a =
volume
descending acid riff, a sonic digeridoo (you know those long tubes you =
blow
into to make the aborigine tonal music) and the BBMH drums treated to a
breakdown / breakup a la James Bond Theme. The layering and =
modification on
the vocals deserve a second mention.
Overall, I'd say Honey pulls out all the stops. It's a song you have to =
bob
your head or stamp your feet to. It's infectuous, it finds a track in =
your
brain and stays there. It's super danceable, although it's not =
conventional
or comparable to anything "electronica" It's not the introspective or
thoughtful music that Moby frequently puts out, it's a dancefloor =
filler,
and a whole lot of fun. On Monday I'll review my other promo 12". which =
has
the original mix. It has lots of variety in it, including the =
"underwater"
sound, the ILTS funk kat guitar, and more, with a D.'n'B/Jungle mix, =
too. (
I can't distinguish between J and DNB very well. I know jungle is more
dense, but sometimes, they're just the same to me...)
Well, enough from me...

Actually, I think the vocal sample used her is "way down yon-", as in
"way down yonder... sometime".

I think this mix would be really good to listen to while running a race.

You got that right! It has a lot of what I call "musical adhesive" --
it sticks in my head and keeps playing, whether I'm aware of it or not.

A) Find someone who wants to sell them. (as I did, thanks to Paul Simpson)
B) Make friends with Moby's maneagement.
C) Wait and hope German or Australian single contains them.

Unfortunately, they don't just go around giving out CDs to fans. Unless you
have something to offer them, I doubt they'll be helpful. If you're a pro
club DJ or radio DJ they'd love to make you happy, tho. That's really the
purpose of promos. I got mine by relentless seeking. ( but I wasn't the one
to even find them) I'll be posting a mother-lode of other Moby buying
opportunities, including for sale older promos. If you can't get the Honey
promos now, don't give up, they're brand new, and used ones will be on the
