i've been struggling with this question since i first got into moby way
back when...

which do you prefer? moby's instrumentals or his songs with lyrcial
accompaniment? (or even his covers, since you really *cannot* argue the
strength of "that's when i reach for my revolver".)

myself, i'm tending towards his instrumental stuff. songs like "shining" and
"first cool hive" inspire all kids of incredible emotions in me, like the
first time i heard "hurt" by nine inch nails.

on the other hand, he's done some really good stuff w/lyrics (specifically
most of the songs off AR).

i dunno. call it a topic of discussion. james is bored and sober at 1am on
a friday night and wishes to express his random musings with the rest of
the people on this list...

Yeah, that's defintely not an official release. 'Spikee' / 'Dogman Go Woof'
was a single release back in the later portion of 1993, before 'Dubnobass...'
came out.  At the time it was touted as "Underworld's heaviest
manifesto yet..."  I don't know about THAT, but it's defintely a great
single and worth hunting out if you don't have it (not you Shaun, because
you already have what's on it.)

I forgot who asked about Moby but no, I don't have any of his albums
in the recommended listening section.  I think some of his early singles
are good, but everything past say 1994 is completely forgettable in
my opinion.

Does anyone think Moby might be gay or bi? Just thought I'd
throw that into the wind coz I'm interested to know what
everyone else thinks about this. Maybe we shouldn't talk
about Moby's personal life on the list, but then like you
say he's very interesting and he is, after all making
himself public through his music and philosophies. I wonder
would Moby like everyone to know about his sexuality?

I think it's about high time you added this question to FAQ, since it seems
to come up with alarming regularity. Disappointingly, to some, reassuringly,
to others, Moby says he is purely heterosexual. Anyone who's ever heard or
read him talk of his sex life would have no doubt of that. He has said  he
enjoys anal sex (there's a fun topic to broach), but only on the giving end.
And, once again, only with women.

So according to Scott..everything from the FSR singles to ITLS is
forgettable..Now I'm wondering if he means forgettable as:  Forget about
getting any Moby release after 1994...or every release after 1994 is like
all the other electronic shite being put out(i.e. forgettable).  Now if the
first is what he means..of course he has a right to an opinion..But
imho..everybody should have EIW...the double remix album..EOE(Maybe he
doesn't know Moby's the Voodoo Child?)and Rare(which technically predates
1994)...(still don't have ILTS..so I can't comment on it).  I doubt he means
the second...If Moby was a bandwagoner...AR would have not been released
when it was..and none of the other releases are anything like the top40
"electronica(horf)" crap out there...Just realize that Scott has a right to
an opinion..and not everyone has to like Moby(which is a good thing..means
we don't have to fight the WHOLE world for hard to find singles :) ).

BTW..Just a note to everyone who's on other lists...Be sure when you want to
send to another list a post from said list(be it Mobility, Dirtylist, IDM,
etc)..You have the person's ok to do so...Ppl like Scott posted to
Dirtylist..not Mobility..Now I know we're all adults and we're not going  to
flame Scott for what he said(realizing he does have a right to an
opinion)..But there are exceptions to every rule..and Scott's not asking for
flames from the entire Moby list :).  This is just a friendly reminder..I've
seen what happens when ppl don't ask a person to send their post to another
list.

WELL.....tim......we often refer to moby.....the contradiction.....
and the duality of man
and
oh yes woman
it seems moby has enjoyed the fruits of the garden and has approached
that from a few angles
no?
please be informed that moby is more modern and
experimental/experiential
than he is a church-goer
if you read closely he bashes christianity at the same time he
celebrates an adherence to it's most basic message
and yet he lives in such a way as to require forgiveness
at the end of the day>
it would seem
that nothing is perfect

I found a CD single of Dog Heaven at the local music shop and bought it.
Amazing!!  Especially the Extended mix!  Definitely a must listen if you can
find it (this one sat on the shelves for about eleven months),

Any word on if there is a Hymn (this is my dream) single out anywhere?  I'm
going to try the good ol' local music shop (I actually have a catalog
number, but have never seen the thing).

okay, i was listening to WPKN (89.5 FM, Bridgeport CT, best station in
the world, <http://www.wpkn.org/wpkn/)
Saturday night (sorry i didnt tell u earlier, i was in NYC yesterday)
and anyway Binnie Klein (the dj) was reading off her playlist for the
last half four or so. stuff like Tori, Esthero, Autor De Lucie,
Pavement. then she says Mimi Goese and i'm like, hey ive heard of her.
WAIT, SHE SINGS ON EIW!!!! yes folks, Mimi Goese has been in hiding
for 3 years recording an album. its called (i'm 99% sure its called)
"Fire And Roses". Binnie said she got this 10-track advance cd in the
mail, release date May 1998 (hey thats this month!)

so i was like wow this is so cool! so i called the station, and she
answered. i asked her about the cd, turns out its on Luaka Bop/Warner
Brothers (David Byrne's label, home to Cornershop and Geggy
Tah...remember those guys? all i wanna do is to thank you, even though
i dont know who you are, you would let me change lanes, while i was
drivin in my car...i love that song!!)
anyway, the cd is coproduced by Byrne, and some other guys i never
heard of.
so i told her, i thought that was cool you played that, cuz Mim sang
on mob'ys album EIW, and she was like "really which songs? oh cool!" i
told her that it was cool she played that because i was on this moby
list and all these people were wondering who she was and what she was
up to. i suggested that some people thought she was from Cocteau
Twins, but she said she wouldve recognized the voice. I said i wouldnt
have known, i never listen to them. she thought that was really cool,
since she too is a Moby fan. I asked her if she could play both more
Mimi, and some Moby. she said that for some weird reason, WPKN doesnt
have many Moby cds, and they definitely dont have EIW,and she didnt
have a copy. ya think of all the cds PKN has theyd have some
Moby...anyway, she did say she remembers playing moby a lot in the
past ("overplayed" she said. i said nah, you can never play too much
moby...)

but she said she would definitely look, and she mentioned me on the
air.

so in a half hour or so, she came on the air and mentioned me again,
and she said she would play another mimi track, then a moby song with
mimi singing.
so she played a song called "Believer" which was kinda cool. ( I got a
litle bit of it on tape too.) There's lots of electronic instruments,
and then her voice comes. of course it sounds exactly like it does on
EIW. the words are weird, their about aliens and stuff, they sound
kinda Bjork-ish. the drums are kind of in a drum n bass rhythm, but
kind of like an Olive song or a Mono song, not like Roni Size or
anything. i guess you could call it trip-hop, maybe. so i guess you
could count her as a woman in electronic music! well if you
like ITB and When its cold...than youd like this.

THEN she played a weird version of Into the Blue that id never heard
b4. kind of a rock version. (i got part of this on tape too.) it
started out drums and guitar and voice and was like this most of the
song. at the end was some whistling and kind of ambiance in the
background. what mix is this, is this the jon spencer blues mix?

well now we know what mimi goese's up too. maybe next tiime moby
tours, mimi can open for him, that would be cool. well maybe if you go
to WPKNs playlist pages, youll find a Binnie Klein playlist. she
doesnt update them enough tho, but she said on the air that she would
update it son. so check back in a few weeks or so, ya never know.

while im here, i just wanted to add something cool. i was watching an
old Simpsons episode (circa 91-92) and i noticed something cool on
Lisa's bedroom door, the side that faces inside. for this one episode,
she has a Brian Eno _Another Green World_ poster on the door. of
course, the way its angled, her cabinet covers half of it so you can
only see like
ENO
ANO
GRE
WOR
or somehting like that, but its kinda cool. Its the episode where she
writes that essay and wins a contest and they all go to Washington DC
for another contest and she sees these politicians bribing and writes
a new, anti-democracy essay called "Cesspool on the Potomac"...well,
if you watch the simpsons and have this episode on tape, you know what
i mean. in the beginning/middle, whenever its in lisas room, put the
vcr on slow, and watch for the door. i tried looking on other
episodes, but theirs either herr "Jazz Fest" poster, or like last
nites new episode, no poster.
just thought that was cool. shes like 8 yrs old and she listens to
Eno? i know lisa simpson is not a real person, but if she was that
would be kind of cool. cuz admit it, do you know any 8 yr olds who
have even heard of Eno?
