I don't know for sure, but I can venture a guess. Elektra "had" Moby,
but what did they do for him? They failed to release a number of his
singles. After delaying _Animal Rights_ for almost five months, they
didn't promote it with any singles. Though Revolver and the Bond
Theme had videos shown a little bit on MTV, neither was released as a
single by Elektra. The latter in particular could have been a hit in
the US, but Elektra bungled it by putting out only a 12" (and we know
that only diehards (DJs and fans/collectors) seek out and buy 12"s.
Though they've done some good things too (such as the US Move EP, FSR
maxi-CD, and BBMH), overall I would have to say that Elektra's
promotion and releasing of Moby's music has been poor. They should
look to Mute as an example if they want to clean up their act.

I fully agree with you there, it's so obvious that Moby was not
their priority over the last few years. It's a common problem
for artists who border on mainstream, yet never become cash cows.
And if the national radio promotion team had been on top of it,
I think they could have easily taken the James Bond Theme into the
top 10 in gavin and cmj.
Does anyone know where that peaked on the US college charts?

Why should it be so far away? As far as I know, techno is the most popular
form of music among hacker types. Of course, they listen to other things
too, and I don't think there's anything inherently "nerdy" about electronic
music, but doesn't it seem that techno's electronic origin, precise timing,
and computer-generated special effects might appeal more to programmers and
other computer enthusiasts than the general populace? Seems logical to me.

No. Bill Gates is considered neither a hacker nor a musician.

I like these "how it was" messages, as I definitively cant attend those

I suggest a Subject starting with [James, dont read!]: :)
More seriously, I think it's a great way to share things about Moby.

HEY, you know what would be dope?
If all of us on the Mobility list got together and threw a party (rave)!
We'd have to pick some neutral location, but that would be AWESOME!!!
And we wouldn't have to worry about what music to play!
Peace,

I dont consider myself a hacker of those who spend their spare time attacking
others machines, but more a computer nerd, who sometimes has to do tricks to
fix something, or to make it work like I want.

I think there're different ways to approach eletronic music. I would call one
of them, 'user-level' approach: they dont know anything about electronics,
but know how to push buttons, and move controls... The other one would be
an eletronic-aware person who also likes (composing) electronic music.
> but doesn't it seem that techno's electronic origin, precise timing,

I agree with you to some extent. The knowledge on how much it takes to do
something, makes you notice more about it. As you learn, you find more details
in what you do/are. I dont know if I make sense, but if you're into it, you
live it in other/better(?) way.
> No. Bill Gates is considered neither a hacker nor a musician.

We be Jammin! Hey Mon! 8:39
AM
I was wondering... (I am about to hop into an oven)...what if all of Moby's
eco-friendliness, vegetarianism, etc. is just a show? Maybe he's just putting
on this fake face just to attract listeners, just to seem more interesting.
interesting thought, but my experience as a vegetarian says that it isn't the
sort of thing that "attracts" people, in fact, most people are ready to
heartily debate your choice and make it their personal mission to get a piece
of meat in you. sure he might attract a minority of people doing that, but if
you're going to be fake to be popular, wouldn't you fake something that would
attract a lot of people rather than a few? just a thought. i'm glad you don't
really believe that is the case with moby.
btw, i'm new to the list, so hello all. i've been listening to moby for about
five or six years now and have the basics - moby, rare/go, i like to score,
some domestic cd singles, and the voodoo child ambient cd that recently came
out (the title escapes me at the moment). i saw him twice in dallas and those
were some of the best shows i've been to. any more american dates coming up?

Welcome Victor & April !!! I hope you both enjoy us and I hope you won't
hesitate to chime in whenever the urge strikes you.
Yesterday I was browsing at the reccid stor. I saw the Jam & Spoon's
"Stella" Cd from Austria on the discount import rack. I recognized the name
from the Go remix talk hereabouts, and saw Barracuda on the back. I bought
it, and Moby's mixes are good! Not his best, but good. My preference is the
Electro mix. I'm figuring they traded two mixes? I know Moby likes to do
that. Stella has a very cool cover. I like J&S, I'll be keeping my eyes open
for them.
Regarding: Is Moby for real? I agree with the group here, of course he is.
You don't see someone maintaining a false front put out such honest,
powerful, heartfelt music. He could've gained much more by not being how he
is, although I believe this was already pointed out.
Regarding: Techno I agree with both sides here. There is a media bred image
that is skewed and misleading, but coincidentally, it does fit in some ways.
(the creation of techno often involves computers / higher appeal of techno
to a video-game generation)
I would've been involved in the above conversations but my mailbox program
is taking a crap and I got all of yesterday's mail all at once this morn.

Actually, if you read up on his history you'll find out that Bill Gates was
an origional hacker (not necessarily malicious). He's more than a
business man - he's actually got some brains too.
Maybe interest in techno and interest in computers don't have a direct
correlation, but there's some quality in each that makes them appealing in
similar ways. I'm very interested in both, but I don't think I'm
interested in one because of the other. I rarely associate the two.
