  163. Yes.  "I Feel It" [Next Is The E] is the I Feel It mix that is just
  164. like the one on _Rare_, except SSF does not fade it out.  "Go" is the
  165. Woodtick Mix, which was the 6=BD minute standard club/radio mix, the
  166. radio edit of which appears on the _Moby_ album.  "Drop A Beat" is
  167. the New Mix, which is harder and shorter and not as good IMHO.  The
  168. Subliminal Mix of "Go" is also included on SSF.

  183. Well, "moby" is actually a fairly common term in some circles.  Do
  184. a web search for Moby and you will likely come across lots of Unix
  185. related pages that use the word, along with things about Herman
  186. Melville's book Moby Dick, that radio station's "Moby in the Morning",
  187. MOD files, the buoy, and other miscellaneous things.  If you're
  188. lucky, you might find some Moby pages like mine buried deep within
  189. the search results.
  190.  
  191. The New Hacker's Dictionary (a.k.a. The Jargon File) has the
  192. following rather long entry for moby:
  193.  
  194.   moby /moh'bee/ [MIT: seems to have been in use among model-
  195.   railroad fans years ago.  Derived from Melville's Moby Dick (some
  196.   say from 'Moby Pickle').]  1. adj. Large, immense, complex, im-
  197.   pressive.  "A Saturn V rocket is a truly moby frob."  "Some MIT
  198.   undergrads pulled off a moby hack at the Harvard-Yale game."
  199.   (See appendix A).  2. n. obs. The maximum address space of a
  200.   machine (see below).  For a 680[234]0 or VAX or most modern
  201.   32-bit architectures, it is 4,294,967,296 8-bit bytes (4 gigabytes).
  202.   3. A title of address (never of third-person reference), usually
  203.   used to show admiration, respect, and/or friendliness to a com-
  204.   petent hacker.  "Greetings, moby Dave.  How's that address-book
  205.   thing for the Mac going?"  4. adj. In backgammon, doubles on the
  206.   dice, as in moby sixes, moby ones, etc.  Compare this with bignum
  207.   (sense 2):  double sixes are both bignums and moby sixes, but
  208.   moby ones are not bignums (the use of moby to describe double
  209.   ones is sarcastic).  Standard emphatic forms:  Moby foo, moby
  210.   win, moby loss.  Foby moo:  a spoonerism due to Richard Green-
  211.   blatt.
  212.       This term entered hackerdom with the Fabritek 256K mem-
  213.   ory added to the MIT AI PDP-6 machine, which was considered
  214.   unimaginably huge when it was installed in the 1960s (at a time
  215.   when a more typical memory size for a timesharing system was
  216.   72 kilobytes).  Thus, a moby is classically 256K 36-bit words,
  217.   the size of a PDP-6 or PDP-10 moby.  Back when address registers
  218.   were narrow the term was more generally useful, because when a
  219.   computer had virtual memory mapping, it might actually have more
  220.   physical memory attached to it than any one program could access
  221.   directly.  One could then say "This computer has 6 mobies" meaning
  222.   that the ratio of physical memory to address space is 6, without
  223.   having to say specifically how much memory there actually is.  That
  224.   in turn implied that the computer could timeshare six 'full-sized'
  225.   programs without having to swap programs between memory and disk.
  226.       Nowadays the low cost of processor logic means that address
  227.   spaces are usually larger than the most physical memory you can
  228.   cram onto a machine, so most systems have much less than one
  229.   theoretical 'native' moby of core.  Also, more modern memory-
  230.   management techniques (esp. paging) make the 'moby count' less
  231.   significant.  However, there is one series of popular chips for
  232.   which the term could stand to be revived -- the Intel 8088 and
  233.   80286 with their incredibly brain-damaged segmented-memory
  234.   designs.  One these, a moby would be the 1-megabyte address span
  235.   of a segment/offset pair (by coincidence, a PDP-10 moby was
  236.   exactly 1 megabyte of 9-bit bytes).

  238. Sorry, if that went over anyone's head.  It is very old-school
  239. hackish language, and is not the most up-to-date definition, either.
  240. I just happen to have the first edition of the book on hand, and it
  241. is now at least in its third edition.  Though what it says is true
  242. about 8088 and 80286 CPUs, I believe that things were fixed to some
  243. degree starting with the 80386 ("386") processor, which can address
  244. virtual memory up to about 4 gigabytes (if my gray-matter memory
  245. serves me correctly).

  326. if you can find it, but it's from 1992, so don't hold your breath.

  456. Stop?" (CDTrophy2) and "Emptiness" (CDTrophy3).  IMHO the first one
  457. is better, and Moby sometimes plays that track at concerts.

  608. The magazines that I like for techno/electronic stuff tends to be from
  609. the UK.  I prefer "Mixmag" and "Muzik" the most... and then there are
  610. others like "Jockey Slut" and "DJ" mag.  "DMA" is the most adequate
  611. magazine for covering what is going on in the US... and "Mixmag" had a
  612. US edition but I haven't seen that in months?  Does anyone know if it is
  613. still being printed?

  624. and the scene behind it all.  lots of reviews in each issue...
