Subject: (mobility) Moby - Glasto '98
Date: 01 Jul 1998 19:12:44 +0100 (British Summer Time)
Despite missing 'Rocket from the crypt' and 'Dawn of the
replicants' on Friday night due to the torrential rain, it
let up just in time for Moby.
I think I missed the first few tunes because I was
struggling through the mud getting from our tent to the
massive 'Dance tent' on the other side of the site. The set
was amazing - strange flaming torches on either side of the
stage and mad images convulsing on huge video screens (and
no I wasn't tripping!) - mind you I was pretty wasted!
Anyway, he played a mainly dance/rock hybrid set. It was
like a drummer, bass and guitar player playing storming
dance music! I heard nothing from AR, but lots of stuff I
hadn't heard before. He did JB theme, feeling so real and
every time you touch me, which must have been the rare
'fucked up mix' that was mentioned earlier - it was ace!
The crowd just loved it, even though we were all standing
in a lake! Even my mates thought it was great! He also did
some really early stuff like heading into the days of acid
house, but it was stormin'.

Subject: (mobility) Other mailing lists?
Date: 02 Jul 1998 03:29:44 -0700
I've noticed a sharp decline in posts to this list in
the last month...I'm not saying I'm lonely or dissapointed,
I just thought I woul dbirng up a new thread here:
Other mailing lists you are on
(obviously some of you are spending time posting somewhere
since I know you can't control yourselves)
So let's hear about what other lists people have gotten into,
and maybe a bit about what they are like.
I'll start.
Other lists I'm currently on:
Orbital
Dirtylist (underworld)
604 (goa and psy trance, combination of various goa lists)
I'd say Orbital is something I couldn't give up, since I've
met alot of new friends and cool people there.
But I've also found alot of immature assholes post too.
Good points: Steve Price of the Loopz fanzine always has
direct info from Orbital themselves and always posts it.
only a handful of posts each day.
the Dirtylist is a wonderful community of people with a good
sense of humor and a great deal of musical knowlegde concerning
other groups (not just 90s electronic stuff either)
Posts can tend to get off topic, but no one seems to care too much.
Don't mention mp3s here, some people are paranoid and others
feel that they are evil and bad. Privately I trade with alot
of the members though. Lots of advice for DJs from other experienced
DJs, lots going on with Underworld playing so many live sets lately.
Darren Emerson himself posted yesterday, as he does occasionally.
(So when the hell is Moby going to post something here???)
the 604 list is absolutley amazing. Discussions range from trance
music into all related phenomenon- drugs, astral projection,
spiritulism, magic, travelling to foreign countries, buhddism,
reality in general, philosophy, universal theory, live MIDI tricks,
music and DJ gear, and lots more. This has been quite an experience
and if you are into trance music I highly reccomend it, but
it can get up to more than 100 posts a day- from a wide range
of people all over the globe. Some of the discussions can get
REALLY deep and some of the people must have degrees in weirdness.
There's always info on the lastest parties and such and where
to find the music you are looking for. A bit of everything here,
and sometimes quite intense. Stay out of any psy vs. goa trance
falme wars and you'll be OK. I hate it when they have House music
vs. trance music flame wars (not ever really nasty or anything)
but the messages climb up above 100 a day then and it's boring.
Otherwise it's the best list I've found overall.
Moby dammit. there I said it, don't fuckin complain.

Well, I joined dirtylist for 2 days, but the traffic was high, but
the content was lacking, for me. While I was there I got about 30 msgs.
about obscure Euro music from 6+ yrs. ago. I didn't know at all what they
were talking about, crazy obscure trainspotting nonsense. Maybe I didn't
give it a fair chance, but my e-mail is a work so the low traffic like this
is good.
I recently joined the aphex twin list that someone posted to here,
after that picks up I'm sure I'll be able to tell you more. AFX info is hard
to come by as RDJ is secretive and many of his biggest fans are elitists w/
large ego's and wicked nasty senses of humor. Lots of misinfo results. (I am
not saying ALL RDJ fans, just some, the louder ones esp.)
I've been having some immature fun at iMusic.com going onto BB's
like Master P and trying to engage people I perceive to be foolish in debate
or arguement. While I support anyone right to listen to whatever pleases
them I also have fun criticizing their choices, esp. because they tend to be
willfully ignorant.
Anyways, I've also noticed that this list polices itself so well
that we chastise ourselves about off-topic posts b4 anyone else can. It's
sorta funny. With such low Moby traffic in msgs right now, I saw we loosen
up a little until the off-topicness gets unwieldy. (like that sentence was
unwieldy) Thoughts, everyone?
A little rant: Does it bother any of you when someone who never
posts themselves complain about what we write, when we get off-topic? It
does me.
Till next E, Steve

i'm not on any other list but this one. i dunno.. i don't spend as much
time online anymore - especially since my computer decided to crash its
motherboard. so, i use my parents computer, when i can get on. my brother
spends most of the time, in fact- ALL OF THE TIME, on this computer. i
think he's surgically attached to it. i'm trying to work on an older
computer, but the motherboard's so old on that thing (it's a 386 & 486,
kinda weird), so i have to wait until i get a job and save up $$ for a newer
motherboard. ::sigh!:: so, job hunting is taking up my time-that's why i
barely post. plus, there's not much going on. also, i can only go on this
computer while my brother sleeps-when he's awake u can't get him away from
it at all! so... those are my excuses-er, reasons. :)
and now i must go and crash- stupid job interviews.... have to get up early
in the morning... ::mumble mumble:: and.. oh yeah-MOBY!!!! there, meets to
requirement (i hope)... if not, well then read MOBY over and over again...
i dunno... i need caffiene right now...
Blessed Be,

Subject: (mobility) Shining is one awesome song
Date: 02 Jul 1998 15:43:04 PDT
Hi Everybody,
sorry if this is a dated topic but I just have to share my enthusiasm
for this song.
I went used cd shopping yesterday for the purpose of trading in some of
my cds that I'll probably never listen to again. I had a couple of
discs on hold at one location because on Saturday there was no Manager
on duty so they couldn't buy/trade any discs. The slacker peons told me
to come back on wednesday and there would be a manager present to do the
trade. I show up on Wednesday and lo and behold, NO MANAGER!!
I have to drive out of my way to come over to there store and when one
of there employees tells me there will be a manager and there isn't
needless to say I was perturbed. I kept on repeating to myself silently
"Anger, Fear, Aggression. Those are the paths to the dark side." I
decided to take my business elsewhere. I go across the street and I
find some Goldie, Orbital and Moby used discs.
The Moby disc was a promo single for ATINITBL. It has New Dawn Fades,
Shining and Jon Spencer remix of Into the Blue.
I've heard people describe shining before. I kinda new what to expect.
But what I heard absolutely blew me away, maybe it was because its been
awhile since I've heard a moby song for the first time (hey, it was new
to me). I got the feeling kinda like when I bought the Animal Rights
import 2cd set months before the domestic version came out. The
aweinspiring, I can't believe that I'm hereing this kind of feeling.
Not to say that shining sounds like AR at all.
The Jon Spencer remix of into the blue was what I expected from what
I've heard of Jon Spencer. Really "chunky". I've only listened to it
once so far, I keep on replaying Shining.
If I'm reacting like this to one quasi-new song, whats going to happen
to me when the new album comes out?

What album did Shining come out on. I don't seem to remember hearing that song
before. And, a quick question. Does anyone have any idea whatever happened to
that tape that was supposed to have all those videos on it that was between a
bunch of different mailing lists? Cool. Later.

You can get it free from def@mail.bogo.co.uk when you order
merchandise (eg. t-shirts) over 10 pounds. (And yes I have
it. I think 'You' is probably the best live song on it and
'Face it' a close second. Well the whole CD reveals that
Moby is pretty good at live, hardcore punk!).

no, i don't stay away from caffiene.. but i don't drink it as much as i use
to. i stay away from soda (depletes the body of water), but i do drink
green tea (yum yum yum!). living out here in the desert (I WANT RAIN!!!!),
i've learned to drink lots of water everyday, so that is my main
refreshment. but yesterday, well.. i just needed caffiene because i had to
get up early.. i had an unsuccessful job placement interview that i wasn't
really awake for... <yawn!> oh well!
and it is depressing that nothing is really going on out there dealing with
moby. i think we're all just waiting for his new album to come out. so,
when is it suppose to come out? didn't the date get changed? and i don't
have any concerts to talk about because i usually miss them all due to a
shortage of cash .. still pissed that i missed the crystal method concert
because i found out too late ::sniff!:: but this is the boring life of a
teenager, so i'll stop.
hope everyone is having a great summer!!! i can sure feel the heat out here
in AZ!!! it hasn't quite reached 110 yet, but it sure gets close!

hello everyone, I am here in New Orleans with my dad at the national
educatiobn association annual convention, infact on one of their courtesy
computers. Any way they have a Media store here, called Virgin
Megastore!!!
Jesus, they have a lot of moby and other rare cds that I have been looking
for, cheap too. If you have a store similar to this in your area, then I
encourage you to patronize them. I got many imports and singles that I
have never even seen, for on average, 6.00 per cd!!!! It was three
stories high with 2 levels of CDs, the third story was other media, like
movies and DVDs etc. Huge selction of everything!!!!!
They said that they only had about 10 stores nation wide, but it is teh
best CD store I have ever seen.

I didn't know there were people talking about Milla Jovovich. I love her and I
have had her CD for about a year now. It is suprisingly good and she was

maybe an i like to score ep or something.
i feel ive hit a wall, i cant find any moby i dont

a way to get ahold of lots of those things as well as
that weird unreleased tape with oil 2 and stuff and
burn them onto a cd and secretly distribute it to

WARNING: There's little in this post about Moby.
>plovious i thought you didn't do caffeine?!
No, I was the one that doesn't really dig the whole caffeine idea. Except
I'm a hypocrite 'cause I had a cup of java and a 32 oz. pepsi while driving
back from Cornerstone music festival this morning. I figure though that
staying awake to stay alive is a lot higher a priority for me.
In case you don't know, Cornerstone music festival is a yearly event over
in Bushnell, IL. It's kinda like a woodstock-type thing where people camp
out and there are tons of bands, except that all the music is "Christian."
Anyway, they have a dance tent each night and a lot of techno artists play.
I thought a lot this weekend about the path of Christian techno, and if
any of you are familiar with it in any way, and want to discuss private,
let me know. Or if you were at Cornerstone and even were at the dance tent
a bit, let me know too--private e-mail. Maybe we were dancing next to each
other. I only ask this 'cause I know that a few of you are into this
scene. Like C.O.D., etc.
I was working at the N*Soul booth at the festival selling CDs, and there
was a new CD by Cloud2Ground, and a guy I was working with described it as
sounding a lot like Moby. I chuckled because to me, no artist compares to
Moby. Moby is so versatile in the genre of music he puts out, that
comparing someone to him is very, very vague. But I saw Cloud2Ground play
at the festival, and he was incredible. He's a DJ based in Oklahoma City.
Some of his stuff did actually sound like some of Moby's dance, such as
found on EIW or so.
I always find it hard to describe the genre of a techno song--whether
dance, trance, hardcore, drum 'n bass, jungle, etc. Is there anything
online about this or can anyone give me direction?
Moby is incredible.

Mobyites,
My G/F's family have a goat farm and one of them (the female one) had
a baby goat today and named it Moby. Cool, huh? I think so.
Anyway, when exactly does Moby's new single come out? Does anybody
know? I thought it was this month, but why would he release a single off
an album then wait 6 or more months to release the album itself? It
could turn out to be the "Depeche Mode" syndrome, wait 4 or more months
to release the actual album after relying on the single itself? 'Ultra'
flopped (maybe because of it). However, no matter what happens, I'll buy
the album.
One last thing, I got a new e-mail address, so don't worry about me
anymore. *sarcastic laughter* :-)

I got it here in Grand Rapids Michigan at a store called Vinyl

It was the only one but I can keep my eye out for another if you wish.

This can be very difficult to do at times. I was asking the
questions you are for a while, and nobody's answer could help much because
sound description is hard to verbalize. You'll just know, eventually. D'n'b
is dense, often layered bass droning and lots of drum tracks. The D'n'b is
just what is proclaims to be, w/ the drums and the bass as the foreground
and usually the focus of the music. Some groupings are less straightforward.
Ambient & trance can overlap. The ambient however, is usually focused on
that which is moody and atmospheric, while trance tends to focus on
repetition w/ slight progressive variances. Both have elements of each
other, it is their focus or attention which sets them apart. Jungle I can
tell by ear but can't hope to describe. To me, it's a certain style of d'n'b
mixed w/ housey elements. Hardcore is usually just some kind of extreme.
Happy hardcore is very fast is speed and the happy is from the vocals going
all chipmunk. Everything is high-pitched,and so godamn happy it makes me
want to puke on my shoes and not clean it up. Happy as crap. Other hardcores
can be extremes of speed or emotion or volume or pitch or anything really.
Shoe size. Industrial is defined by the sounds / samples that make the songs
just as much as the style of using said sounds. You can get into lots of
arguements w/ people over this one. It's pretty easy, I think, to tell an
industrial song as opposed to some of the others so I'll leave it be. I hope
this was instructive but I'm out of fuel for now.

Subject: (mobility) My own classifications...
Date: 06 Jul 1998 10:24:14 PDT
Everybody,
It can be quite difficult to categorize some artists sometimes.
Like Moby, for example, who changes styles so much. But, here are some
examples of people in genres( to me, anyway.)
Industrial: Nine Inch Nails, Skinny Puppy, KMFDM, Ministry, etc.
Drum 'n' Bass: Goldie, Roni Size, Spring Heel Jack, OMNI TRIO,
Photek, etc.
Rave/House: The Crystal Method, Prodigy, early Moby, etc.
Acid: Josh Wink, Joey Beltram, early Moby, etc.
Dance: Real McCoy, La Bouche, Ace of Bass, etc.
Ambient: Orb (the most popular Ambient group), Moby's 'Ambient' CD.
Big Beat/Funky Breaks: The Chemical Brothers, Propellerheads, Fatboy
Slim, DJ Icey, etc.
Techno (no real genre): CJ Bolland, Moby, Orbital, BT (progressive
trance, maybe?), etc.
Well, there's my explanation for some of it. (Of course I could be
wrong)..

Here's the one I made. It's called *Jesus*.
Hymn (This Is My Dream) | All That I Need Is To Be Loved )MV) | Bring Back
My Happiness (extended) vs. Move (disco threat) | Next Is The E | That's
When I Reach For My Revolver | The Blue Light of the Underwater Sun | Go |
God Moving Over the Face of the Waters (heat mix) | Love Hole | UHF3 |
Electricity | Come On Baby (uk) | Feeling So Real (main edit) | Heaven | All
That I Need Is To Be Loved (HOS) | Hymn
I have a volume two called *Hypocrite* in the planning stages that includes
such tracks as Thousand | Dog Heaven (extended edit) | Whip It (DMV) | First
Cool Hive | James Bond Theme | etc. *Jesus* took me over a year to compile
and arrange, so *Hypocrite* is still a great while from actually being put
together.
If there are others out there who have made there own, I'd love to hear
their ideas.

Virgin Megastores is one of many companies owned by Richard

UK. He is very successful (apart from his Virgin trains at
present) here.
He is viewed as giving good value to customers and puts

as cheap in the UK Virgin Megastores as the US ones!

It is indeed on the Jackyl soundtrack. I picked that one up at random
when I was in Michigan one time...anyone else have this? If so, what does
everyone think of the BT/Richard Butler song on there?
Also, I'm quite glad that I finally got a copy of Black Grape's "Get

best on there, as is the songs by BT/ Richard Butler, LTJ Bukem, Apollo

No, I avoid shopping for CDs in Vegas- heard it sucked for that!
Anyway, what I would have to reccomend is going to the Star Trek
bar at the Hilton (the lower level of the so called 'star trek
experience') Bring a friend because half the drinks they serve
require (legally) more than 1 or 2 people to be present drinking them!
These huge fishbowls full of bright colored mixed drinks...
Anyway, this is the only bar I've ever been to EVER that was
playing cool music- I heard Moby- Oil 1 and All That I Need Is To Be
Loved....also heard tunes from Orb, Orbital, Fluke, Underworld,
and more!
I complimented them on thier cool music and left VERY drunk
(until I entered the big casino where the oxygen is obviously
pumped in to make you much more sober) bought a tribble
(they should give me one for free, how many people have that
last name???)
and went to the casinos at the other end of town on the strip.
(which is where most people are, I love the Luxor- try the rides
they are great- and if you like to trip, be sure you are for that!)
Vegas is great but forget about buying CDs there, you will probably
leave completely broke either way though, so at least with CDs
you'd have something to show for it!

Oh, sorry....oh well.
I don't even know since I live in SF, CD shopping in Vegas
is the last thing I would want to do since there's hadrly enough
time to see all the other stuff.
But compared to Wyoming, I bet you could find some good stores there,
although I don't know if Virgin is there or not...
There's a Tower Records though (not quite as good)
You should try some internet online CD retail shops if you are
having a hard time finding things where you are, chances are
you will find more than you could ever afford at some of them.

No caffeine today, yet, just a bottle of Triple Ginseng & Schizandra tea. My
inspiration was none other than a desire for message traffic...so I started
a new msg not having any idea what I would write about. I was thinking about
remixing them all together, but that's too much organization and work. Maybe
I'll spew out a few more, who knows. I apologize to everyone who actually
read that. Bye now!

To finally answer this question, yes, there is a Virgin Megastore in Las
Vegas. Don't count on $6 CDs tho, the stuff they had advertised in
Sweater was more in the $12 range. They had a sale in the second half
of
April, but obviously that's over now.
Virgin Megastore also has locations in LA, NY, SF, Disney World, Vegas,
Costa Mesa, Ontario Mills, Burbank, Long Island, Sacramento, Dallas, and
Phoenix, and they have stores opening this year in Denver, Chicago,
Miami,
and New Orleans. Now you all know =)

I just got back from CStone Monday morn myself. I thought for sure I was the
only Mobility person there. But, lo and behold, not only was Ade there, but
I actualy got to meet Darryl Cottier, a prime specimen of beefcake if I do
say, and he bought a RIM *v.beta* sampler from me.
I went to the NSoul stage a time or two. Mainly to see Joy Electric and a
few new artists during the day. I didn't stay long though because the mud
was so thick. I missed cloud2ground. Love the cd though. Great structures
and melodies.
If anyone else was there, email me and let's compare notes.

Actually, that's the exact same thing they did with Everything Is Wrong.

okay this is basically what i did during my vacation to the land of
spongey grass, old people, heat, bugs, wildfires, and mickey mouse. as
well as the happily wedded couple of erika and joe kaufmann. and yes
it is moby related.
we drove down to dc where my moms librarian convention was going on. i
love going to these, you get to go around collecting free stuff like
books and candy and pencils and paper and cds and stuff. plus they
have internet rooms there.
then we drove down to florida. it was weird, we just missed the fires.
(you all know about the fires right?) i mean, while we were driving we
could smell smoke and see burnt trees and even see fire. it was like,
at 6am we were driving in a certain area, by noon that area was
closed. that close.
anyway i didnt go to magic kingdom like you people thought i did. i
did that last year. i went to epcot. wait, didn't i say all that? and
evn about the smart watermelon too? i dont want to repeat myself...
well anyway heres something moby related...disney pipes in lots of
atmosphere music everywhere i guess, and one time during the morning
near the info desk, i swear i heard when its cold id like to die. the
song playing had no words, but it was the exact same melody and it
sounded exactly the same. maybe it was the instrumental version from
eiw remix, which i still dont have. and actually, here's why i dont
have it...
we went shopping later on, and we came across this music store called
Music 4 Less. talk about fraud, almost all the cds were like 15.99,
how less is that?
but there were a few bargains, like they had rare/go for 14.99, which
was 2 less than what i paid for it at home. the import section,
however, was good. actually it was more like an "imports we couldnt
selll cuz they were too expensive so we slashed the prices" section.
they had 2 moby cds: revolver remixes (w/ whip it dmv) for 10$. and
they also had.......EIW Remix, $19. i was thinking, well thats the
lowest price i ever saw for that. but i didnt get it. but i didnt pass
it up for no good reason. they also had a ton of underworld imports,
and they had a copy of second toughest for $18, and it came with a
bonus disc. it only included two trax, (nuxx) and rez, but i didnt
have those trax anyway. and besides, i couldnt find this cd
domestically for much less than that price. plus it was marked down
from 26.49. so tell me that wasnt worth passing up eiw remix.
btw, i know there are tons of uw fans on this list. how rare is this
special 2cd edition of second toughest that i just bought? if it is
rare at all? it said limited edition on it...
well anyway if anyone goes to orlando sometime soon, go to the belz
factory outlet malls, and in mall 2, go to Music 4 less and you can
get a buncha cheep moby cds!
mall 2, btw, is the one that looks like a lowercase "m" in the "you
are here" map, not the one that looks like a cross. but theres a music
4 less in mall 1 also, so maybe that one has some good stuff too.
and then came the real reason we went to florida: the wedding. i kept
wondering, why does wedding music suck? why do love songs always have
to be mushy? oh well. they did play some good music, like for the
first two hours while we were eating, they played dave matthews band
_under the table..._ (twice) which was cool cuz dave matthews rocks.
but for the rest of the reception, like all the music sucked. of
course, like all the cds they had there sucked too. they had like
marky mark and mc hammer and crap. they did have a copy of lisence to
ill tho. these kids kept bugging the dj to play "brass monkey"...and
they eventually played it! well at least they didnt play the macarena,
or that stupid song from titanic. or the chicken dance. but they didnt
play any techno either, of course it wouldve been weird if they did.
actually once i went to a wedding and they had a prodigy single and i
kept requesting they play it, and when they finally did, it was a
remix by the chemical brothers, which was cool except i like the
original version way better and i requested the original verison too.
oh well. at least they played something slightly good. of course the
real reson to go to a wedding reception is the food of course. not the
music.
well anyway, while we were going home, i saw this billboard near
atlanta. it said, in huge letters,
MOBY! i guess moby is the name of a dj. it also said 105.1 FM Kicks
Morning weekdays. and while i saw that i was listening to why cant it
stop. ha.
btw, i now have a favorite hamburger restaurant. its called krystal
method! it's kind of like whitecastle that we have here up north, with
like really small burgers and all, except its down south, and the
waitresses stand behind tons of black boxes and ocasionally push a few
buttons and eventually you get your food. haha. does anyone get that
one at all? never mind...
anyway, we went to chatanooga tennesee to look at some choo choos,
when we found the public library. mom went in to check if they had any
of her books. i checked the computer to see if they had any moby cds.
i rthought i was checking by author, but i guess when you type
soemthing in the computer it searches subject author and title. well i
found 28 copies of moby dick, 1 book about moby dick, but nothing by
moby. well i dont think anyone in tenessee has heard of moby anyway so
no surprise there. then i saw they had internet computers, so i
checked my email. 64 new messages!?!?!? well thats what you get when
you dont check yr email for a week. and i wrote ryu and (whoever was
looking for a prodigy list) when i was there.
then we went to alabama and went in this cave that stays at like 58
degrees Farenheit all year. cool.
then we went to knoxville. cuz like, anyone who watches the simpsons a
lot knows why we had to go to knoxville: to knock over the sunsphere!
actually, for all you simpsons fans who remember the episode when bart
and his friends went to knoxville, and they went to the sunsphere and
it was practically dead there, thats really what it was like. i mean,
the area around the sunsphere looked nothing like it did on the
simpsons, but the town was just dead. like all the restaurants were
closed, the sunsphere was closed, we couldnt go in there. every store
was closed. actaully, i heard there was a curfew there or something.
but even still, it was a few hours early. so we were searching for a
place to eat when we stopped at..an arbys! theres another simpsons
joke...in another episode, when the kids get stranded on an island,
sherry or terry (one of those anoying twins) says "i'm so hungry i
could eat at arbys!" and everyones like "whoah, she's hungry!" well i
like arbys anyway.
okay now i have some moby ?s/polls/etc.
one of my favorite moby songs is slight return. i notice nobody ever
talks about this song. what does everyone else think about this song?
and also, who sings in first cool hive? i mean i know there are no
words but someone is still singing. is it mimi? and also, what does
mimi look like? when i picture someone to match that voice, for some
reason i see alain morisette. eek.
and one more thing......i have another poll for yall.
whats everyones fave cds so far this year? since the year is already
half over...
everyone give me a top 3 (or so...whatever.) and i'll compile it into
a big list. give me at least a top 3.
and give it to me, not the list. heres my list:
1. various artists _thanks_
2. goldie _saturnzreturn_
3. ryu _power made flesh_
heres a few more...like honorable mention...
dj spooky _synthetic fury_
xero products _lull _ (demo)
david holmes, _lets get killed_
and theres a ton of cds i havent heard this year as always, like
massive attack, morcheeba, i could go on and on...
well anyway you can count bootlegs/cdrs/your own music/etc. and
imports and stuff like that. well i cantwait to hear from you all! i
would like as many responses as possible. and plaese, to me, not the
list. theyll be due an my birthday (july 26) and ill compile them
shortly after. i want as much cooperation as possible!!!!!!!
okay i guess thats all. this concludes the paul simpson digest for the
week of july 10. goodbye all.

geocities account, but i won't be using it that much. so... just to let
you guys know..
hmm... lessee.. anything in Moby news? nope. i did go to Best Buy
yesterday and was shocked to see that they had a pretty big Moby
collection. Every other time i've gone, it was usually just ILTS or The
End of Everything. i find it really odd that all of a sudden CD stores
are getting techno.. it's like they woke up or something. my brother was
shocked to see that they had a lot of Front Line Assembly (i think i got
that right) CD's and Skinny Puppy CDs. i still haven't found any Moby
CD's in the mall CD stores.. so i guess techno is not getting all that
popular yet. darn! and i wanted to be part of the in crowd! ::sigh!::
also, i find it really upsetting that magazines like SPIN rarely do
articles on Moby. i've only read little tidbits and one page articles.
i want to see a whole spread! i want to see him on the cover! instead,
they put crap on the covers! i still think SPIN is better than Rolling
Stone, though... i like the Genius Lessons. hee hee! what magazines out
there have you guys read that have done a pretty good job with keeping up
with Moby news? i can't find any magazines anywhere, even in those big
bookstores. all i find are SPIN & RS and Vibe.
well.. i think i'll close this pointless post. i just decided to put
something because this list has been dead for a while. can anyone find
ANYTHING to talk about?!?!?! come on.. ANYTHING!!! i wish that Moby

I'm in Milwaukee, and I'm almost certain that I it saw at Barnes & Noble.
There is also a good hobby shop by me that carries *tons* of magazines,
and they have it. Doesn't MixMag have a webpage?

I just got back from NY and I'm sooo excited about Moby's NEW material.
I got a very special sneak listen from a DAT of his new stuff. Let me
tell you, he is definitely back. I also got to hear remixes of the first
single which, I'm told, will be available on import in August. The Rollo
mix is to die for! So, for all you Moby fans.....time to rejoice!

Tower is Schaumburg, IL carries them, maybe your local Tower will too.
It also has URB, Jockey Slut, and a few other like magazines. Two have
Josh Wink articles this month. :)

Yea, basically any of those big bookstores that are in their own building. You
probably won't find MixMag in Waldenbooks or some other small mall book store
but if you can find something like Barnes and Noble, Bibelot, or Borders, they
will have it. If you still have no luck, and you really want to get it, I'll
give you the phone number and/or adress to reach them. Later.

Rollo mixing for Moby again... that's cool! I'd like to see a Peter
Rauhofer (Club 69, Sizequeen) remix. I know he has his hands all over
everything but he does some great work. I would also like to see some
remixes from BT, Paul Oakenfold... and a few other of my favorite
artists that aren't as popular.
By the way: BT is now a free agent in the US and I believe in the UK
too. Has anyone else heard this? I believe the info came from
Billboard mag.

yesterday i went to the library my mom works at, and i found this 3
volume book called "parents aren't supposed to like it" and what it is
is sort of a encyclopedia of music for teenagers. or maybe parents.
anyway so i was looking thru the index and under dance music who else
appears but our dear richard melville hall? so i was looking at the
entry on him. for a idiots guide to moby, this explained a lot. of
course, we all now pretty much everything it said there, but i guess
parents wouldn't. so maybe its a parents guide to music. btw, also in
the category of dance music it said bands such as deee lite, orb,
chems, (but not prodigy), kraftwerk, uh probably someone else i
forgot. the weird thing is, they put a lot of bands my mom likes in
there, like blues traveler and collective soul and the gin blossoms.
and they put david bowie and bush under brit-pop. whats up with that?
oh well...
well anyway the book is called "parents aren't supposed to like it"
and its 3 volumes, and its published by
U. X. L.
so go look for it soon. your library might not have it immediately. it
just came out. so maybe go to a bookstore and look for it.
hey people, does anyone else have a top 3 or so list?
only 2 people responded. i need more info than that! so if anyone has
a top 3 (or whatever) list _PLEASE_ give it to me soon. i want to have
a big, diverse list here. and most importantly I WANT AS MUCH
PARTICIPATION AS POSSIBLE.
ok. bye now.

Oh, I had the opportunity to see Moby live here in Sweden at the "Arvika
Festivalen".
It was the coolest live performance I have ever seen. Two live drummers and
one live bass player (I will buy a bass guitarr, I promise), what an
incredible power! Only a vegan with lots of carrot-drinks like Moby can
have that energy on stage, he played hundreds of different instruments, he
climbed on the drums, he stand on his synth, he was everywere, what a man!
And when he played his last song (that incredible speedy one) and the rain
poured down, he climed up on his keyboard and everyone was like like mad
(including me, which was extremely mad).
At least I got something to live for, to keep the memory of this concert in
my mind.

of moby so much in the songs but in the difference of each of the songs. Maybe
it is just me. Later.

the 10th track ("industrium" by holographic) has some string chord progressins
that i would almost swear are identical to "go". wonder if it is a rip-off or

I've got a sky blue colored 10-inch called Little Tykes imported
from the UK that uses Laura Palmer's Theme....perhaps you a haave
something similar, Gingerbread, that also uses Twin Peaks? That records
is 45rpm on one side and 33 on the other.... I have another record that
samples the vocal "It's Party Time!" and the "Go!" vocal, as well as
sampling some Wink and more Moby. (all in one song, crazy, ennit?)
Whoever it was has good taste! Does anyone know anything about Tilly
Lilly's Roller Coaster? I bought that on a lark today and hope it's
good. 'tis a transparent yellow 10 inch. I like these little colored

so what label is moby on nowadays? i heard somewhere that (in america)
he is no longer on elektra. that's too bad, because elektra is my
favorite major label (the cure are also on elektra). well hey, as long
he continues to make good music, right? i hope he still records with
mute in europe (great label too--depeche mode), so i can easily order
his import stuff from mutebank if i can't find it here. but i'm just
rambling.
can anyone tell me anything about dj cake? is it good stuff? is it
worth searching for? is it another pseudonym for moby, or is it someone
else?
there was a copy at one of my local record stores that sold for
incredibly cheap, like $.99 i think. of course with my luck, next time
i looked for it, it was gone. haven't seen it since.
3 favs, eh? well, i'd have to say (my tastes are slightly different from
probably most of you)......................
1. tortoise "TNT"
2. beastie boys "hello nasty" (just got it today--kicks much ass.)
3.dunno, haven't heard too many cd's of 1998. from what i've heard from
the album, massive attack's "mezzanine" seems pretty damn sweet.
that is all.

Little delayed with this post...excuse my lazyness. My friend and I took
the train to NYC on friday to see what we could find at the Virgin
Megastore in times square. I was slightly dissapointed. There prices
weren't that great at all. There import section was mad expensive
(around 25 for ilts japan). They did have a very wide selection though.
In spite of the less than great prices I did succomb and dropped a $100
spot. I picked up Revolver England with Lovesick, Sway ect.,Revolver
Australia with the Rollo and Sister Bliss mix which is wonderful, JBT
Aus which had a huge scratch in it and half the cd skips but is good for
what i can hear, Bring Back My Happiness Single ( Junior Vasquez mix is
great ) , uziq- salsa with mesquite, westbam vs red jerry , darwin
chamber [has mixman with it really cool program check it out], aqua dr
jones single for the antiloop remix , and rockers hifi which also
includes a track for mixing in mixman , and finally United DJs of
America 3 Josh Wink they had some BT which looked good although i never
heard any i had it in my hand but put it back, when i got home i dled a
mp3 and BT is terrific..ill have to pick him up elsewhere.....and then
yet i went to St Marks Place where all the cheap small new and used cd
stores are...picked up wink simple man for 3$ and a copy of Moby for 5$
for my friend..really good deals in these places!! Anyways that was my
day in NYC fun and expensive but good music to show for it. Im on Moby
withdrawl i feel so due for a concert..i think alot about the one at
toads place in ct last year.. man that was a good time. Any idea when
hes back in the states? Moby makes me feel good.

good question...
i'm wondering about the specifics of this myself.
last i read, he had "officially" left elektra in america, and was
still looking around for a new home for his music. of course,
as soon as he left elektra, they picked up alec empire, and will
be releasing the entire dhr back catalog.... a fair trade in my book.
>can anyone tell me anything about dj cake? is it good stuff? is it

moby originally tried to get people to believe that dj cake was
not him, but he later broke down and told people the truth, that it
is in fact him.
i like the dj cake single. not as much as the lopez stuff, but i like it.
it's very repetetetetetetive...but interesting none-the-less. it doesn't really
build too much, and isn't really ecstatic or anything.... to use a moby
word.... it's "strange". i'd get it....

You'll know as soon as we do, as the tour dates are usually posted to

ideal. Moby liked House Of Blues very much too, as he states in the Live

I don't know if all of these actually came out in '98 or not but
my favorite albums that I've bought this year are:
#1. Deep Forest - Comparsa
#2. Delerium - Karma
#3. Please save my earth soundtrack

#5. Sailor moon soundtrack - Orgel Fantasia (laugh if you will)
I always think of Moby and Bjork as my two fav artists but for the past 3
or 4 months I've been listening to Hans Zimmer's music scores, and import
anime scores more than anything else. Well, I do play EOE almost
everyday. Also i've rediscovered Orbital's in-sides, and selected ambient
works from Aphex Twin.

ok, bear with me, i usually buy used cds so i'm a bit off in terms of new
releases, but my favorite three cds for the year so far are:
voodoo child/moby - end of everything
morcheeba - who can you trust? (anyone have opinions on their new cd vs. this
one?)

according to the UMP (ultimate moby page)...
Story So Far is the late-in-coming UK counterpart of Moby's self-titled album.
It's definately worth getting, if you can track it down.

I've eaten at a lot of places in Vegas, but that one instance i
had the craving to consume some of Mickey D's INFAMOUS "100% All Beef
Patties (complete with bits of kangaroos)" I also ate at Burger King,
too, but only 2 bucks more expensive than over here in the Land Of
Lincoln Logs. The buffets are good, if you can stand waiting in line for
4 1/2 hours......but then again, that's why the city never sleeps,
right? I usually ate at 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning. No one's there.
Enough with my ranting. there's my .99 and I'm out.

hey i just got the new 5th aniversary edition of CMJ NMM and it has a
review for a cd by Hi Fi Killers
and it says recommended if you like Moby's JB Theme so i guess if you
like jb theme then give these guys a listen r something. anyone heard
of these guys?
anyway, in this special 5th aniversary edition, it lists some bands
that they predicted would be stars in past "on the verge" columns...
some predictions that came true:Crystal Method, Atari Teenage Riot,
Cardigans, Elliot Smith, Tortoise, Presidents USA, mu-ziq, Squirrel
Nut Zippers, Offspring, Veruca Salt, etc.
some predictions that did not come true:Monorchid, Juicy, Limblifter,
Ditchcroaker, Inbreds, Jonny Polonsky, Caterpillar, Capsize 7, etc.
thought that was interesting. wonder if they evr predicted moby in
there...
okay bye..

Both of them are on Concrete. The Dub Pistols made a minor splash with
"There's Gonna Be A Riot". Lionrock have 2 full-lengths out:
An Instinct For Detection (2CD)
City Delerious
I haven't heard the latest Lionrock disc-but I do have the 12" for the first
single. From what I've heard it's much better than Instinct (which I hardly

CDMUTE128 and LCDMUTE128..i'm a bit confused because i was under the

ahead and order them, expecting to get them within the next few weeks or
should i just wait to get them on the supposed release date?

Subject: (mobility) Disk
Date: 17 Jul 1998 15:20:14 -0600
Count me as one of the lucky ones..I found Disk in a used cd bin..Why
anyone would get rid of this release is BEYOND me...Even if you did have a
cdrom that wouldn't read the disc, it's still worth keeping for Shining.
They're obviously not a hardcore Moby collector :).
For those of you who don't have Disk..and haven't checked what's on it...It
has the following:
EYTM(album version), FSR(Ecstatic Mix), and Shining <all 3 playable from a
normal cd player>
The cd-rom portion contains the songs: ITB(album version), Move(ep
version), and FCH(album version). And has the following videos: Hymn
[This Is My Dream] and EYTM(Beatmasters 7" Mix)
No need to comment on the first two audio songs..we've all heard em..we all
love em..But Shining..Ooooooooh..One of the most beautiful tracks I've ever
heard...Brings out all sorts of emotions..I'd place it in the same vein as
God Moving..Shining is a bit more beat driven..but it pushes you from one
emotional extreme to the other(like God Moving)...I'm curious..is there a
bpm limit to trance music..cuz I'd put Shining in that catergory..Put the
headphones on..hit play..close your eyes..and feel the song permeate(sp?)
your body. I love how Moby places an underlining piano/synth track in a
song..It gives the song so much more feeling. It's too bad this wasn't on
EIW..I think it fits REALLY well.
Now the cd-rom...Once again..no need to comment on the 3 audio
tracks..we've all heard em..We love them to death :). First EYTM..I will
need a little help here...Now I'm assuming one of the woman in the video is
Rozz Morehead..who's the black woman? Anyways..it's a VERY beautiful
video..very sensuous..light touching..kissing..feeling..bondage..All
tastefully done..Probably would have been played during VH1's Sex Symbols
half hour :). <Side note: If it is Rozz in the vid..I love the tat around
her navel :).>
Now for Hymm..First off it's in b/w(EYTM was in color)..The music starts
and there's some sort of fuzzy image..not quite sure what it is..then it
cuts to a wide open field...it's a little out of focus..but it starts to
move in on something..it's not till your right on the person that you know
it's Moby..Moves right on his head and acts like it goes into it..Then the
imagery starts..It looks like they placed a stop motion camera on some sort
of vehicle..So all the lights of the city are stretched out..but you're
moving forward..Then it places Moby on said vehicle..sort of shakey..out of
focus..like a dream maybe(hence the title?)? He's placed in the water..in
some sort of pool/spa(maybe the same water that the pictures for EIW and
it's singles were taken from?)..In a cemetary..In that same open field
passionately kissing a woman(anyone know who this is?)..In what looks like
a monk's outfit..floating in the air(a lot like the Tablah player on
M2)..Screaming..etc...All in all..a very surreal video(much like a dream :)
)...As for the music..it's nothing like Hymm(which is why I like artists
like Moby..the remixes are usually nothing like the original..so when you
get singles..it's like buying a full length album)..It does have a bit from
the original(Put on Hymm..FF to 50 seconds..blank out the piano track..and
that's what's in the remix)..but has a new track over it..very
happy..uplifting..has a slight beat to it..Every so often you can hear the
vocal "This Is My Dream"..Also sounds like Moby put female vocals into a
synth and played the keys. Of course now I want the single with the
song..so I don't have to have my computer to play it.
That's all..but 2 small side notes...For those you have Disk..and can play
it on their computer..can you PLEASE send me sci1hlp.vxd(version 4.00.950)
located in windows|system|iosubsys..I did see how to fix the problem on
Moby.org(thanks Dan)..but I guess Djdedd no longer exists(I emailed him..I
got it back saying user doesn't exist)..please send it to
Fishlips3@prodigy.net..
And to Dan...Something is wrong with the search engine...Before I found the
help in the Disk "review" I tried searching the list archives and got back
nothing.
Thanks to all..Get Disk asap!

the ricochet music CD V.beta is very good, the Moby (voodoo child) cut is
the same just chopped off earlier, but it sounds good like that. And it has
a good drum & bass cut from britannika. Michael knOTT track is great, as
well as VOL. And the CD only costs of few bucks. Brad put together a good

i paid 27 for the story so far, it's a good extra
version of the self titiled, almost like it's a self
titled mixed remixed, it has 4 alternate mixes
(go-woodtick, drop a beat-new version, i feel it-i
feel it mix, go-subliminal mix unedited) as well as
one track as far as i know not available anywhere
else- mercy. and it also includes thousand. mercy is
more of an ambient piece so if you have all the self
titled album singles and you dont like the mellower
stuff of self titled it's probably not worth it..

Correct you are..and it's also on Rough Trade...I'll use this post to
remind everyone that Dan(along with Moby, Mike Brown, Corley Brigman, Jon
Eisen, Dave Hein, etc) have compiled all the songs/remixes into a song
index discog located @ http://www.moby.org/info/mobyidx.txt...It's a great
source because if you're looking for a certain song or remix that you want
to buy..you know which album/single you need to look for..Without having to
look thru a full discog. Thanks for all the work Dan!

The reason I didn't do this privately is I have an idea..I'm sure that we
either: #1 Know ppl that travel overseas from time to time...OR #2 know ppl
personally(or on different mailing lists) that live overseas. I was
thinking instead of going through record stores..and having to pay $10 -
$12 for a import single..Maybe someone in said country would be willing to

Hi,
New to the list, so I thought I should probably introduce myself.
My name is Brian and I'm a confessed music-a-holic <tm AA>
I've been into Moby for a couple of years now, and have amassed a few
singles, but nothing major. Here's my collection
Everything is Wrong (US Release)
EIW DJ mix Album
Rare
I Like to Score
Dog Heaven Single
End of Everything
Everytime You Touch Me
Moby
All that I Need is to be Loved
Feeling so Real
MixMag Moby/Sean Vath
Animal Rights (US)
James Bond (Aus)
then on Vinyl
Bring Back my Happiness
and
That's when I reach for My Revolver.
So I don't have a lot, but I've got the start of a collection.
I listen to quite a bit of dance music, but I do a lot of DJing at a local
community radio station, and I write for a upper-midwestern music mag
called "Raw Tuna" so my music tastes are pretty eclectic.

I don't remember if anyone else noticed this before, but I was too lazy to
search through the archives.
I was sitting at home 2:30 on Sat. night, bored, but not wanting to go to
bed yet. So I flip on the TV and watch a PBS show about airports. (For
the non-Americans who may not know, PBS is a U.S. television station). If
you've ever watched PBS you know that in between shows they have short
clips about future shows or station identification. One of those
identification clips showed the PBS logo, a photograph of a man hiking or
something, and a quote by Robert Louis Stevenson. As it was on the screen,
there was some background music playing and I noticed that it sounded very
familiar. It was about 5 seconds or so of "First Cool Hive." It was a
pretty interesting surprise.
(That was a lot of detail about a minor event, but anyway....)

So I figure I better welcome my own brother to the list..Are we the first
brother combo on the list? Anyways..It was really bizzare..Went over to
visit mom's one day..Was in lil bro's room playing cd's for my older
bro..He wanted a mixtape of electronic artists for his little road
trip...So I played some stuff to see if he'd like it(Underworld's
"Dubnobass..." and MBM's "Subliminal Sandwich")..So while we're sitting
there..Evan's stack of cd's is right there..and I see BBMH right there..I
think to myself, "Did I lend him this cd?(seeing how I lend him cd's from
time to time..right now he has JBT)" Turns out he's gotten into Moby..very
cool :).

The single is Aug. 17 (US or UK... both? anyone? my guess is UK only)

Ryan & Evan:
This family thing is cool.
I've tried to get my whole family into my music, but I haven't had any
success. My little brother likes g-raps, my younger siter likes my music
but she is firmly 3 yrs behind me, so... maybe in another year she'll
catch on. She also likes stuff w/ a gothic slant to it. My older sister
listens to country& lite stations. My parents... are daft. (no punk)
I got some Moby vinyl thru the mail the other day. The Up River mix of
Hymn reminds me a lot of his Up River mix of Fractal Zoom, I love how
Moby has multiple mix personality disorder. (upriver, electro,
barracuda, voodoochild, lopez, etc. etc.) The Dirty Hypo, was good as
well, but my favorites are still the ones from the This Is My Dream CD.
esp. TIMD & Euro Edit. I got Next Is The E, which the vinyl version
lacks the Victory mix, I think it was. Also got Move, promo I beleive.
It came in a black sleeve w/ "Promotional Copy Not For Sale" on it in
gold stamp, but it may be a dif sleeve, as these I got 2nd hand.
Now I need some advice here. Is it worth it for me to pay 13$ each for
UHF, Barracuda, Mobility, & Brainstorm? Am I getting ripped off? Am I
getting a steal? Well, that's what I agreed on but I'd like to know
anyway. I'm also getting Self-Titled on vinyl (is this 2x12"?) and
another copy of Next, and a Go 12". $100 for all inc. shipping. Good or
Bad?
It'll be fun to play both Next records at the same time on "Thousand"
and fuck it all up.

start off with. and you have vinyl! arg! vinyl rules.. i will always
love vinyl.
sorry i haven't been posting much.. i've been working. plus, well...
there really isn't much going on. and that PBS thing was interesting to
hear.. i like reading when certain tv stations will play Moby. i was
shocked to hear it on ABC's 20/20. it's great that they like his mellow
stuff... it would be more shocked if they played any of the harder stuff,
though.... maybe i can try to convince some ABC station to do it
someday.. i'm suppose to go and visit my future aunt (she's engaged to my
uncle.. don't know any other term for her), and she works in an ABC
station in NY (dunno if it's the big one).. maybe i'll bring some
Moby....
anyways... i think i'll end this. can't wait for "Honey" to come out.
now i wish my radio would work in my car so i can see if i hear it... the
person who owned the car before me left the detachable face in it and
someone broke in and stole it. kinda idiotic, huh? now i have to wait
until i get enough $ for all the expenses that i have to do and then i
can replace the face. so.. now i drive in silence with Moby playing in
my head...

OK... to ship things over seas can be easy. we sent a package to Germany
as a letter (we put it in a padded envelope) and it only cost $3, plus it
didn't take that long to get there. when we send big packages, it takes
about 2-3 months without any express payments or anything. so, CD's
really shouldn't be a problem... just put them in a padded envelope (they
should be safe) and send them as letters.. it's cheaper and faster.
that's how i see it, anyway.

I sorta figured this question would come up, I was surprised to find
some of the older 12" that Moby put out under pseudonyms. As for CDs,
none of those mentioned were. They were all records. I didn't find them,
someone else did, but they find out that I was looking for them at
Watts.
www.wattsmusic.com/musicnow/vinylbbs/
www.virtualvinyl.ndirect.co.uk
Under the DJ/vinyl junkies section there is a bulletin board for record
trades. I just threw up a I WANT MOBY & I WANT WINK and I've been well
rewarded. Also Virtual Vinyl. Although the message on the board says
they've updated I couldn't get their site just now when I tried. It'll
be back, though. They have Go & another record or two by Moby. Happy
hunting!
As for CDs, you know as much as me: local stores, on-line stores... I
haven't found a CD trading board yet but from what I understand
Whitezone at chicken.org has a mailing list for this. I couldn't find
the subscribe page, though. (Paul, was it you who posted the afx
subscribe instrux? Could you post the Whitezone info?)

Moby:

Go (no, I don't know which one)
Hymn
Move
Other w/ Moby:
Jam & Spoon - Stella (electro & barracuda mixes by Moby)
Voodoo Child - Voodoo Child
UHF (UHF, Peace Head, Protect Write, Everything) {Moby pseudonym}
The UHF record cost 10 pounds which translates as something close to 13
US dollars, so I think I paid a fair price. I still value any and all

worry about all the other various singles. I do think that I need to pick

Wow, that's a long tape! Where is the Intro mix of Next from? Is it just
another name change? (ex.:I Feel It, Club Mix) Lots of goodies on there,
I'm sure that I would include Patient Love as well, it's my favorite on
End Of Everything. I'd prolly put Stream, too. Maybe Everything,
although it would fit w/ your stuff, my idea of quiet tends to go along
with mood or introspection. I'd put stuff like God Moving, Stream,
Shining, First Cool Hive, Novio, Pateint Love, Alone, Rain Falls,
Mobility (aqua), Help Me To Beleive, and various stuff from Little Idiot
and Voodoo Child. (probably Underwater too if I had it) You probably
won't get criticism becuase we all like Moby here, it's just a matter of
prefs.

Subject: (mobility) Disk review
Date: 23 Jul 1998 21:54:32 -0600
It's fun when you're following links for something else..And..."out of the
blue" ;> you find something Moby related...I found a review of Disk on
C-Net <http://www.cnet.com/Content/Reviews/Enhanced/Reviews/mobydisk.html>:
Disk opens with the artist himself exhorting you to get in
the techno groove by clicking rhythmically on everything
that moves. By the time you're through this disc, your
clicking finger--and your brain--will need to unwind in a
sensory-deprivation chamber. Nonetheless, this title
provides what every ECD should: the feeling that no matter
how much time you devote to exploring different screens
and features, you'll never find all the elements. Little icons
zoom around the screens in an incredibly elusive manner.
The frenzied atmosphere and the lack of specific locations
may eventually have you yearning to escape to the relative
manageability of real life. Interviews with Moby cover such
deep topics as the difficulty of stroking models on video
shoots. You can also read hypocritical essays on the evils
of modern life--all this from a techno artist whose musical
timeline includes the date when Ecstasy was first
synthesized.
--John Butler(johnb@cnet.com)
Now..just because I included the review doesn't mean you shouldn't go to
C-Net yourselves..They also include a 20 second snip of the Hymm video(it
starts about a few seconds from the beginning)..and also has one of the
interview answers(also has an .ra sample..but it's outdated and the link
doesn't work)
Before my review of the "review" I have a question..A while back I gave my
review of Disk..I said I wasn't able to view the multimedia part since I
don't have the right file (sci1hlp.vxd version 4.00.950)..I had asked if
anyone does have this file..I haven't got any responses..I figure someone
has it since some ppl have been able to access the disk..If anyone can
help..I'd REALLY appreciate it :).
Now..about the review...The only real problem I have with it is when John
said, "You can also read hypocritical essays on the evils of modern
life"...Now yes..Moby is hypocritical..but maybe he should have mentioned
that Moby realizes it(which is more than some ppl do). Moby has said in
many articles that he realizes that it's hypocritical of him to speak on on
the environment...then go out and make a cd..and tour on behalf of it.
Other than that..it seems like a great review.

Yesterday evening I just happened to be browsing through a

Moby CD at only 10.79 pounds sterling! I've never seen it
or heard of it before - has anybody on this list? It's
entitled Moby Grape.Wow or GrapeMoby.Wow or something
bizarre like that, with loads of what looks like Japanese
writing. The cover art is sort of oriental with butterflies

According to the HMV computers there are 2 uk versions. The only
information listed is that they were released on the 20th (I think) and that
there's a part 1 & part 2. Of course, the data entry folk are notorious for

okay...i was searching my moms library the other day,and on the
computer where it lists magazine articles i found a listing of an
article in interview magazinefrom december 1989 (v19 n12 p32) about DJ
Moby D. he's a rap artist. thats all i know about him. so if you can
find old issues of interview, check that out.
i was listening to thousand thru headphones (i love doing that and
turning my brain into mush ;) and i noticed something weird. at the
way way end of the song, like the last half second, after the voice
slows way way down, and gets soft, for the last half secodn it speeds
way way up. weird. andd also, like if you listen thru hedphones, like
after the beats stop both times, it sounds really messed up, like
really dirty, cuz like you can hear all these loops....um ok that
doesnt make much sense but listen thru hedphones and you might see
what i mean.
btw, i checked out jimi hendrix:woodstock from the library. this of
course is where moby sampled "called voodoo child" for his self titled
voodoo child single. this album kicks ass. it is definitely without a
doubt the best live album ever. next time you see this somewhere buy
it, its amazing. and not just because moby samples it. hendriz was
like the man.
also, at the library, they have issues of billboard way back to 1993,
and i was looking at the dance charts from early 93 and n.i.t.e. is on
there. so is mbm's "mindstream" and orbital's "halcyon". cool.
and i was listening to my fave station WPKN the other day, and they
were playing a hole bunch of juno reactor stuff from the "bible of
dreams" cd (also awesome)and they played this song "high energy
protons" or something, and it uses the same vocal sample that moby
uses in "this is my dream". i mean, the choir samples in the
background. like the "aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh's. well if you hear that
song youll see what i mean.
okay bye....tomorrows the deadline for your top 3s, so get them in

Mobyholics,
I haven't really bought too many new CD's this year, but my top
3 this year would have to be these:
1. 'Saturnz Return'-Goldie......This CD is amazing, both discs. I didn't
know what to expect from it, but it's turned me totally on to his music
even more. Truly one of the most underrated discs of the year. I can't
believe it got bashed so much. The first song, "Mother", is great, and
didn't get old at all listening to it.
2. 'Fading Into An Undone Thursday'-Jeff Newman......A local
singer/songwriter, and good friend of mine. He's really good with what
he does, and shows a lot of emotion in his songs.
3. 'Urbal Beats 2'......Although I didn't buy this, a friend of mine has
it and is even better than the first one.
One last note, I can't wait for the new Chem Bros. album to be released.
August 25th, I believe.
As always,

Hey, Nathalie! It seems we like a lot of the same artists. I
didn't know there was anyone else who likes Moby *and* Vangelis,
Spring Heel Jack, Aphex Twin, various classical things, and the
Beastie Boys (who I've been listening to a bit lately). Well, there
are a few artists you listed that I don't know anything about, but I
just thought that was a neat similarity. And we're both 21. :) I
also like the Orb, Squarepusher, Josh Wink, Fatboy Slim, and stuff
by Underworld, Depeche Mode, and InSoc, to name a few. Anyways,

a few moby cds (EIW, AR and EU). I was disapointed to find them (moby's
music is much to good to be sold to a used cd store). But anyway...I
then went to a Chain store that sells music (among other things) and I
did find the Next is the E single (finally). I have been looking for it
for a while. It was the only copy, and I don't have a clue where they
came from. I know that a while back the list was questioning whether
Instict was re-relasing singles. Does anyone know if this is true? I
also saw the mixmag album there, but I did not have enough money to get
it. Hopefully it will be there next week. Oddly enough i've seen more
moby at chain stores than the smaller record stores who usually care
lots of the various kinds of "techno".
this is not moby related...but would a person who had the info on the
Cloud 2 Ground group get back to me. I've not seen that cd on the music
store computers, and I was wondering where to get it.

Aphrodite-are we familiar with this guy? (aka Mickey Finn, Urban

nine inch nails: the perfect drug (Aphrodite Mix)
Jungle Brothers: Jungle Brother (Aphrodite Mix)
Jungle Brothers: Jungle Brother (Urban Takeover Mix)
Blackstreet: No Diggity (Aphrodite Mix)
Alabama 3: Woke Up This Morning (Urban Takeover Mix)
Espiritu: You Don't Get Me (Urban takeover Mix)
*EVERY* single mix he does starts with a bit of a funky kick which lasts for
a minute or so, then goes into this bass-heavy rolly beat jungle thing. You
could mix together every Aphrodite mix and not be able to isolate the
breaks...
On a silly note, I just realized that there's another thing to add to my

They've both remixed David Bowie, covered Joy Division, and been remixed by
Aphrodite. (now if only they'll work together...)

CDNow lists the disc on sale for $12.99 thru 4 Aug. You can also get it for
$12 direct from the band's label's online record store
(http://www.NSoul.com/musicorder - where they list the band as Christian
music's answer to Moby, which I find funny since Moby is a musician who is
also a Christian.
Of course, it occured to me while I was running the search that when you say
you couldn't find it, you meant an actual physical store's computer and not
online shopping. To find it in a real store, you may have to walk into one
of your local religious bookstores (why people buy records from a
*bookstore* is beyond me, but that's another discussion) where you will find
the record shelved in the back of the store behind the chocolate Bible
display, obscured by the testamints rack and generally hidden behind a wall
of WWJD merchandise.

"Honey" will be released in the UK and Europe on August 24th; at present
there is no release scheduled for the US or the rest of the world. The
song is seemingly a departure for Moby in that it owes more to hip-hop
than dance music or punk. The vocals were recorded in the deep South of
America in the 1930s by folk historian Alan Lomax.
Mixes come from Rollo & Sister Bliss, Aphrodite & Mickey Finn, Westbam &
Hardy Hard, Sharam Jey, RJ, Bammer, and Moby himself. The video was
recently filmed in London with Roman Coppola.

oh yes, i never mentioned this, i kept telling myself to...has anyone
heard the new faithless yet? probably not, because the word on the
wire is that it wont be out till fall! at the earliest! but....my
local electronic music dj on my local rock station is playing it
anyway! the single is called "God is a DJ" and its kinda trancey, like
"insomnia" but i like the new one better. the words rock, there isnt
like any verse/chorus/verse or anything, not like insomnia, but theres
this part in the middle where he says like, "This is my church. this
is where i heal my hurts. For tonight, God is a DJ." well its really
cool and i know youll all hear it sometime soon. and the album,
"Sunday 4 PM" (or something...not sure) should be out soon too.
probably after the single.
about the survey (top 3s) well its kinda hard to add it up cuz not a
lot of people voted, i mean compared to the number of people on the

I love "Slight Return". It's one of my all-time favorite Moby
tracks. But if I could play only one Moby song on the radio, it
would be one of his dance tracks that would really make people jump
up and get interested in Moby. Actually, it would probably be "All

yep.. it was me.. although, i guess the idea never really kicked off. oh
well! and i prefer that meaning if WWJD... although i don't drink
alcohol.
now, since "Honey" is being released over in Europe first, will we still
be able to get it in the states? we can order it, right? i'm hoping
that CDnow will get it in soon after the release.. or maybe i can
convince my local record store. i really hate how albums are always
released on seperate dates for diff't countries....

Since there are currently no plans to release it in the USA, who knows
if it will ever be released here? My guess is that if it's a big hit
in England, it will eventually be released in some form in the USA.
Of course, the single will be orderable from CDnow and many other
stores. Good offline music stores will stock it as an import. It
will just be harder to find and more expensive than if it were
released domestically.

Woo hoo!!! I got the Mute "Honey" promos today!!! =-)
"Honey" is a funky hip hop song with drums, piano, and samples
from Bessie Jones' recording "Sometimes". I think it's groovy,
and definitely worth picking up when it's released next month.
I may do a track-by-track review soon, but I figured I wouldn't
keep everybody waiting on the preliminary info. The single is
coming out on two CDs and a 12". In addition to that, there are
two promo CDs and three promo 12"s. You can't miss the cover of
Honey. It has a big orange pumpkin with a face carved into the
top, against a black background. The remix CD single is the
same, but the pumpkin is red.
Here are the track listings for the 24 August UK release:
HONEY [Aug 1998]
UK 12", Mute, 12Mute218
A1 _:__ Honey (Rollo & Sister Bliss Remix)
B1 _:__ Honey (Sharam Jey's Sweet Honey Mix)

HONEY REMIXES [24 Aug 1998]

The vocals were recorded in the deep South of
America in the 1930s by folk historian Alan Lomax.
This was from Daniel's post a few days before... which was sent to him
by DEF. There's a link from his new Honey page to the Mobility archive

Yes. Vocals are by some woman (Bessie Jones?) and they are triggered
repeatedly to sound rap-like. It's hard to describe. There is no
singing, just these continual female vocal samples that go very well
with the music. It's at once bluesy and encouraging. I'm not sure
exactly what Bessie Jones' and Alan Lomax's contributions are.
Perhaps DEF can clear this up. (?)

To invoke a message when one has nothing to say one must often think
about nonsense.
Poll questions: (please don't answer them)
How many Moby CDs can you juggle at one time?
Without their cases? (be careful not to scratch or drop them if you try
this at home, kids)
What does Everything Is Moby spelled backwards mean to you?
If you had a Moby dress up doll, what hair style would you put on him?
Why do you think he used a pumpkin for the Honey single instead of
squash?
Instead of any other vegetable? (actually pumpkins have seeds, they must
be a fruit)
Did you ever wonder why Moby __________ (fill in whatever you like)

I am really really really sorry about this post, everyone.

I Like to Score
Moby
(Elektra)
As if we hadn't heard all these songs
enough. As if we hadn't already tired of
his
patently formulaic tendencies. As if
there
weren't already too many versions of old
spy themes flying about at the moment.
But
see, Richard Hall likes to score, as do
Elektra, so we get it all yet again.
Okay, now that the politics are out of
the
way, this is actually a nice offering
from the
tree-huggin' hypocrite-hating
raver-turned-rocker-turned-reformed-raver.
Even though "Go," "Ah-Ah," "Oil 1," and
"First Cool Hive" have been over-loaned
to
films and compilations, I Like to Score
racks up the points by spotlighting
Moby's
newly chilled ethos on "Novio" and the
brooding granola guitar solo, "Nash."
The "James Bond Theme," however, blows
big chunks of boredom; with its stock
drum
kick and a bass line that mimics the
melody,
nothin's doin' at all in the Creative New
Version department. Seriously, do we want
to be reminded through sampled dialogue
that Pierce Brosnan now plays 007?
That track aside, I Like to Score might
be
seen, along with the recent domestic
release of the Voodoo Child LP, as the
beginning of Moby's return to producing
good music. Keep watching this pissy
vegan. (Heath Hignight)

Call them and ask! My guess is somewhere between $9 & $12.
I got lots of goodies today! Namely, the early releases on instict, 12"
format. Someone asked about the Brotherhood on this list during June. The
single is Time's Up, and I'll tell you all about it once I get to listen to
it tonight. Before all we knew was that it existed from the teaser lines
inside of Rare. The detail should be in Daniel's discography fairly soon, I
sent him the nitty gritty. I got this record as a surprise from the guy I
got the rest from. (Mobility, Brainstorm, Barracuda, Go, self-titled, Next
Is The E promo & UHF) I also picked up BT & Tori Amos "Blue Skies #1" today,
I bought #2 about a year ago and it didn't have what I wanted from the
cassingle my bud has. Also nabbed Koko by Peter Straub.
Can anyone tell me about the Over Mix of Revolver?

First and formost..thanks for all the links Steve :).

Zan McGrew(author of the review) obviously doesn't have a clue about Moby's
history..I quote:
"Forget how Metallica went from metal to alternative, or how Alanis went
from teeny bopper pop star to female grunge whine queen; Moby has made the
switch of the century."
Ummmm...hello...Moby was punk LONG before he broke into the techno
realm..So it' s not really a "switch of the century"..but a return to one's
roots.

No kidding...You could say a review is like a debate..You're showing why
something is or isn't a certain way..and you show proof...While I've never
debated..I have written paper's debating a certain position..And so you
don't look like a clueless f__k..it's best to check your
history/background..Oh well..I'm sure most of us never buy cd's purely on
the basis of reviewers for magazines..We know what we like :).

I'm not behind a firewall..and I was forbidden to view the page as well.

speaking of mp3's, does anyone know of any sites that may have moby
mp3's?
all i have to say is thank the lord for mp3's.
the quality of this wonderful development makes me cry tears of joy.
on a different note,
i am just about done with my moby cd hunt.
i have hooked up with almost all the essential stuff he has released on
cd, including pseudonyms, of course.
'demons/horses' i have ordered from mutebank, and dj cake and
'higher/desperate' i have ordered from GEMM.
12", well that's a different story altogether. my record player is
horrible, and i've been way too lazy to shop around. oh but someday...
i'll tell you though, it feels good for me as a collector to hook up
with stuff i've been looking for. mmmm, what a rush...
pardon me for my rambling, i'm tired and bored.
anyway, thanks in advance for help, and as they say..."catch you on the
flip side!"
"you feel alright?" "yeaaaahhhhh!"
"you feel alright?" "yeaaahhhhhh!"
etc.
that, my friends, is all.

jbeez video but i havent really listened to the jungle mix. its on the
amp2 cd tho. they played the original version on amp last week tho.

tori and wink. so thats cool. hey rekkit, do you have a copy of the
option 90 (trent's high school group) album? just wondering.........

To those who requested info:
I've already given the information out to someone, and as the seller
was doing 'first come first serve, so will I. This is only fair, because if
all of you bid against each other the buyer would end up paying a ridiculous
price. If you have your heart set on old rare Moby vinyl, it's out there to
be had. In a period of 3 days I found all those I listed before, plus the
extras I posted to the list for sale. The UHF 12" I got was still sealed!
I'll still be looking around so I'll let you know what I've found, in the
order info was requested. I'll try to satisfy you all.
I don't have any sound capabilities on my CPU, no MP3s, sorry. If
anyone in the Chicago area can make MP3s and has a scanner to post the cover
somewhere that would be great! Or maybe I could send a tape to someone to do
it?
The Brotherhood record is a surprise. The version of Time's Up that
you may have on Rare is the only "Moby only" track on the record. There are
some old school hip-hop / rap vocals spoken w/ a Grandmaster Flash style and
pacing. I didn't write them down, but the guy would speak/rap/sing two lines
then say "time's up, time's up". Moby involvement in these other tracks is
fairly basic, I can't remember exactly which is which, but one mix slows
down the tempo while changing the vocal sample (in Dust mix it is O - O -
Ohh(echo echo echo)) to nothing but mostly echo. Another mix rearranges all
the vocals into different patters over the music. There's not many drastic
changes between mixes, it feels kinda like Moby just laid out some basic
structur and then didn't finish putting the other layers on. Another thing
is that the vocals are the focus in this song, so Moby's beats don't do too
much interesting anywhere except the Dust mix. I've only listened once, and
might change my mind tomorrow and declare the sheer brilliance of it. (like
I did w/ Aphex's SAW II) Who knows. It's definately worth having, but don't
burn yourself out tracking it down.
My next vinyl target include BT's Blue Skies (Delphineum Days) some
more U-Ziq, the Voodoo Child 12", and another Brainstorm Rock The House 12".
(my shoulder got grabbed by an asshole while I was changing records and I
dropped it. It plays fine, but it's lifespan is significantly reduced, and
it'll start skipping after a few more plays I'm quite sure.) Big bummer. I
guess there's no such thing as a perfect day. Talk to you all soon!

Nope.
If I could find out where to get a copy I'd be a happy, happy lad.
I've got over 100 Reznor items, so you can understand the pain ;)

Subject: (mobility) A Wonderful Moby BPM list
Date: 31 Jul 1998 18:04:21 -0400
I stumbled in here on accident while searching for "Voodoo Child" +mix on
Altavista. This is a great BPM list, in ascending order. BPMs for Pet Shop
Boys, New Order, Nine Inch Nails, Orbital, 808 State, other electronic /
dance acts.... a chart for someone's private collection....
http://www2.msstate.edu/~jct1/cod/discogs/BPM/codsbpms.txt
http://www2.msstate.edu/~jct1/cod/
I beleive he is/was a list member, John Turpin, because I saw a Thanks song
listed in the discography of his.
His personal pages are quite opinionated and very interesting. Anyways, I
pulled 45 BPM for different Moby songs, and I only pulled for those which I
have on vinyl. There's got to be around 100 in there of Moby's.
till Monday, Steve
