Last I heard, Moby was playing with the rest of the groups on the Big Top
Tour in Dallas on September 9. That would suck for those of us wanting to
see him in Dallas.

Hi everybody!
Now that we've all raged over dead meat,
and everybody made his -or her- standpoint clear,
some of us very clear,
we might be able to move to the next question:
What in the world is the CONNECTION or Relation between the TITLE
'Animal Rights' and the to that title belonging CD?
Don't get me wrong, I' LOVE this MUSIC, it's probably the best cd I've heard
in a years!
...but I don't see any connections between the Title + Booklet-essays
and the music.
Especially the songs I like most, 'Come-On Babe', 'Love will Never Die',
'Say it's all mine' and 'Face It'
have absolutely NO connection with the Animal Rights, or its movement, or
whatsoever with that Item (theme) at all...
(and the rest is merely instrumental)
Can anybody explain?

Maybe perhaps some people should just realize that a rose by any other name
is still a kick ass CD. Did you really expect songs about animal rights?
Come on... listen to the music. Don't analyze it.

MO>What in the world is the CONNECTION or Relation between the TITLE
MO>'Animal Rights' and the to that title belonging CD?
When has there ever been a connection/relation? Look at EIW...seems
the same way to me...Who says there has to be one?
MO>...but I don't see any connections between the Title + Booklet-essays
MO>and the music.
Well..if there is one..maybe it's a little more hidden...like "My Love
Will Never Die"...maybe that title is meant for "god"..maybe the
earth...maybe the animals. In "Revolver"..he sings, "the truth is not
that comfortable, no." Maybe that's pointed at the far right?!?! When
you look at "Love Song For My Mom"...see it from a larger
standpoint...Maybe he means mom as "Mother Earth".
MO>have absolutely NO connection with the Animal Rights, or its movement, or
MO>whatsoever with that Item (theme) at all...
Maybe he's leaving it up to groups like Consolidated or Fugazi for the
social commentary in their music...Maybe he's drawing the masses in
with his music..then hits them with the essays in the liner notes.

>What in the world is the CONNECTION or Relation between the TITLE
>'Animal Rights' and the to that title belonging CD?
I remember asking this kind of question back when I bought stuff from New
Order. They had lyrics that had nothing to do with their song titles, and
songs on albums with a weird, non-related titles. Its just something to do I
guess. Maybe it was a feeling during the creation process.
I do remember when I interviewed Moby back in 1993, I asked him something
like "How do you come up with your song titles?" and he used the song "Next
is the E" as an example. He simply said "It was a sample I had for that
moment, it sounded cool, so I called named the song after the sample."
My guess...Moby called his album "Animal Rights" because he, being mostly
known as the "techno guru", had a right to show off his "animal side" with
harsher/grinding songs. Call it a rite of passage. No labels for Moby. The
right to be a techno guy, and the right to be an animal.
One other question, for those who saw Moby on tour recently with Big
Top...how was 808 State? I was gonna go to the Chicago show (being a
resident and all), but I had a fever of 101 that day...needless to say, I
stayed home.

I read in a Moby interview a while ago (I'm not sure where ,but i think
it was in Detour) that the reason he named his album Animal rights, was
to get people to ask him about the title and...
then he would tell them all about real "animal rights".

Subject: (mobility) I Like to Score - in brief (yeah, right!)
Date: 02 Sep 1997 19:32:57 -0500
I had mixed feelings about this record, seeing as how most of it was
previously released and since it was made over such a wide span of time.
But the verdict is in, and I Like to Score is much, much better than it has
any right to be.
The first song, "Novio" (from the upcoming HBO film "Double Tap") is a
simple, elegant ambient piece that sets a cinematic mood more effectively
than "Dead Sun" did for "Animal Rights."
I had heard mixed reviews of "Moby's Re-Version" of the James Bond Theme,
both from members of Mobility and the James Bond newsgroup, from those who
heard the 30-second sample from the website. Now that I've heard the whole
thing, I've got to say: It FUCKING RULES!!! And I'm not one given often to
profanity. The theory, I think, is: since Orbital (a band largely unknown
out of electronic music) had a moderate hit from the Saint (a movie that
was a moderate success, based on a TV show and theme song few remembered),
then let's get techno's biggest name and let him perform one a song known
by virtually all of Western Society. It's got a huge beat, with the right
amount of guitar, horns and everything. I think it's going to be a big, big
hit.
Go (Twin Peaks) and AhAh (Cool World) are both new mixes, exclusive to the
compilation. Go sounds like a slight reworking of the Delerium Mix. The new
mix of AhAh is more similar to the album version, with new samples and
breakdowns.
The title track (again from Double Tap) is a funky little guitar and loop
groove.
Oil 1 features a compressed intro and breakdown, that gives the song a more
dynamic sound.
New Dawn Fades (Heat) is the same from the (Feeling So Real cd single).
"God Moving Over the Face of the Waters" is the Heat Mix that was
previously released only on the UK Revolver Remixes single. It has the
happy symphony at the end instead of the sad symphony from EIW.
First Cool Hive (Scream/Fifth Element trailer) is the same as from
"Everything is Wrong."
Nash is a short acoustic guitar interlude from Double Tap, that I can't
help but think sounds a little tongue in cheek.
Love Theme is a guitar based instrumental (similar to "Living") that as far
as I know is not from any film. The album closes with Grace, a reworking of
"Underwater Part Two," that is also exclusive to this compilation.
I hope this is a good description of the record. I've only heard it once,
so far, and you guys won't get to hear it for five more weeks ("available
Oct. 7 to nice people everywhere," according to the bio info). If you have
any more questions, feel free to email me or the list.

Moby explained that on Modern Rock Live. He said he's pretty lucky

I am "him" to whom you are referring. I suspect you intended to send this

I was dealing with C Notes, not Elektra, so it's only logical you bear the
brunt of my dissatisfaction. A simple message included with the shipment

Hi, my name is Ginger, I'm 17 and I just joined this list. I presently
live in Fredericksburg, Virginia, but my heart belongs in Mankato MN....
I just discovered Moby this past April, my sisters and I went to Buzzfest
in Richmond, mostly to see Poe, and the only Moby song I had ever heard
before that day was That's When I Reach for My Revolver on the radio. We
hardly knew who he was; anyhow, he came on stage and started playing and
hopping around and screaming <ggg>, and he was just the most amazing
thing we had ever seen. His live performance is utterly incredible, he
totally won me over; I bought Animal Rights and played it exclusively for
three months afterward...
My Moby collection is pretty meager, I'm sorry to say: I have Animal
Rights, Everything is Wrong and the Move ep...I also love Bjork and Tori
Amos.

"I Like To Score" has been rescheduled for October 7. As for "The James
Bond Theme", who knows. If they release things like record labels
normally do... you can guess that they would release the single about a
month before the album. However, since the movie does not come out
until Christmas, this could throw a wrench into things.
Also keep in mind that promos for both items are already being
distributed. DJ TRIPP has the promo single (which he played over the
phone for me) and Brad has the promo album. Both of whom I am extremely
jealous of! :)

feeling a little let down that Tekno (or maybe Moby in general) was seemingly
such a male dominated place in the musical genre. Keep up the listening!!!!

Has anyone seen the trailers for the new bond movie?
When I saw COPLAND they showed it and I think in the beginning as the movie
popped on the screen they were playing the MOBY mix. It sorta sounded
mobyish it was hard to tell with all the gunshots and such.. either way
whatever it was it sounded pretty good.

Hello people.
I have been on this list for about 3 weeks now, but this is my first
message. I really have not had time to write any mail, just read it.
Anyway...
My name is Jake I am a 17 year old guy. I have been listening to moby
for about 3-4 years. I first heard of him while looking for KLF stuff on
the internet so I decided to give him a listen.
I have The Self Titled album, Early Underground, Ambient, Move ep,
Everything is wrong, Animal rights, and Rare: The Collected Re-mixes
w/the go mixes. I also have a few compilations that he is on. (i.e.
Chill Out, mayday v.III and Rave Anthems).
I am a pretty big fan, but I have not seen him live yet. (The two times
he has come that I know of I was out of town).
Other groups I like include, The KLF (timelords, The J.A.M.S., One
world orchestra), Erasure, Barenaked Ladies, Boyracer, Spiritualized and
a bunch more...
I think this list is really cool, and I am glad I found it. Its hard
getting moby info, and finding some of his rarer stuff.
Thanks to all the people who keep this thing going...
Jake

Subject: (mobility) Moby at CMJ Convention
Date: 05 Sep 1997 11:06:19 -0500
Found this at allstarmag.com today. Looks cool, Moby as Keynote Speaker at
CMJ. Wish I was there...
Ironically, after pioneering electronic artist Moby talked about courage
in his keynote address for the CMJ Music Conference, he was asked why he
himself lacked courage in one specific instance. Earlier this year, Moby
agreed to change the lyrics to his controversial adaptation of the 1985
Mission of Burma song "That's When I Reach for My Revolver" when the BBC and
MTV asked him to soften it. "It
didn't bother me that much," he countered. Moby's speech, which was held on
Thursday (Sept. 4) at Lincoln Center in New York, was compelling and
inspirational. But after he finished his address on courage, the crowd
turned on him during a Q&A session, including the "Revolver" challenge,
forcing him to defend himself and his actions.
"What had happened was, when the record came out in England, the BBC said
that they wouldn't play it with the original lyrics," said Moby. "So I just
decided, 'OK. Well, we'll write some new lyrics and expediently give them
something that they can
play.' I didn't even think that much about it at the time. I liked the new
lyrics -- not as much as the origina -- but I thought they were OK. Then
when it came time to make the video, MTV said that they wanted the sort-of
watered- down version. Maybe this is wrong, but it didn't bother me that
much. "I feel that there are other things that are more important to me --
things that I'm really willing to
fight for -- and a subtle lyric change for a music video, from my
perspective, didn't seem that important. Maybe I'm mistaken in that, but
that was my perspective... for myself, it's prioritizing -- figuring out
what battles are worth fighting and figuring out the ramifications for your
actions."
In defense of his speech on courage, Moby said, "When I was writing the
speech, I didn't even really think of myself in reference to what I was
writing. I don't think of myself as being a particularly courageous person.
If anything, well, I'm just not very bright." In other Moby news, though he
did discuss working with Axl Rose on the next Guns N' Roses album, as
previously reported in allstar, Moby says that he probably won't be
producing the album because he doesn't want to have to move to Los Angeles
for eight months to work on it. However, he did say that he will be
participating in the project as a friend and consultant. "We got along
terrifically," he said of his possible collaborative effort with Rose. "I
like the contradiction there, 'cause on one hand you seemingly have Axl
Rose, who's known as this misogynistic, drug- taking, heavy metal rock star,
and you have me as this kindly, monkish, ascetic Christian -- and the truth
is, his life is probably a lot more sober, and a lot more sedate than mine is."

Subject: (mobility) DVD and Enhanced CDs
Date: 07 Sep 1997 22:57:54 -0700
I have a question about DVD players that is slightly related to
Moby. Sorry if it is off-topic, but I wanted to check if anyone
here knows the answer.
I am considering buying a new computer sometime in the next few
months, and now a lot of them (such as Gateway 2000) can come
with DVD drives instead of regular CD-ROM drives. What I would
like to know is whether a DVD-ROM drive will correctly read
both audio and data from an "enhanced CD", such as _Moby Disk_.
These are unorthodox CDs that use a nonstandard trick to put
computer data in addition to normal CD audio on compact discs.
Though most CD-ROM drives can handle E-CDs, some have problems.
So if anybody has a DVD drive and/or knows the answer, please
speak up! If I get a DVD-ROM drive for my PC, can I still use
enhanced CDs? I probably won't get one if E-CDs are unusable.
Also, what is the likelihood of a DVD drive being able to read
CD-Rs (CD-Recordables)?
Thanks in advance for any info.

Elektra certainly seems to considers "Score" a real record. They delayed
the record six weeks so they could distribute pre-release copies to press
and radio and hype up the record before they release JBT (Moby's
Re-Version) as a single this fall. They expect it to be a bigger hit than
Orbital's "the Saint" and the Haircut's "Mission: Impossible." So, they're
putting cash into it appropriately.
Moby said in the cd's press materials that he's moving more in a dance
direction again, but to expect his next record to be more of a fusion
between techno and guitar rock. Eclectic, but more balanced and unified,
sonically.

i guess if noone else would really want to, i guess i could be the organizer of
this compilation. the only drawback is this, i have to receive the songs on
cassette format only. i have no other way at the present time to do this
project. i know that this semester, i have full access to the most powerful
and FUN lab on campus, which has 2 CD burners, but i have yet to check them out
and figure out how to make personal CD's off of it. that could be another
possibility...i don't know. so if no body else wants to head this project, and
noone else has better equipment to use, i will do it. send me CASSETTES with
your remix/cover with the following info:
your name
your e-mail
song name (remix version or cover version name optional)
source of any "non-moby" samples
any other info you want included
if you want a copy of this compilation, include your snail-mail address as
well.
if anyone else out there not contributing to the comp wants a copy, please hold
off on "orders" for a bit. i want a chance to figure out how much it is going
to be for me to buy cassettes to copy onto and figure out what size is needed.
i will let you know when to "order."
if you want to contribute, tell me now so i have some idea of how many songs i
am looking at dealing with...
thanks everyone!

I would be more than happy to take care of recording and remailing all
the tapes. Is it ok with everyone that I do this? I don't want to take
over if the list would rather have someone else do it...

Ok - if you don't want to know what happens at one of these - delete
this now. If you DO - then keep reading.
The whole things started at 9pm - My girlfriend and I arrived at about
9:30. Not sure who was actually playing at that time, but they were kind
of cool - two guys, standard techno beats, some synth bongos that I thought
would be cooler if they were live.
The way it works was a group plays for :30 min - then tear down for the
next group - while they tear down, a new DJ spins dance tracks.
After the first dj (???) there was Eat Static. They would have been
cooler, but I think the 808 kick drum machine was broken, because the first
20 minutes was a wall of noise and back loops. That whole time sounded
like a song right before the kick drum comes in - but on perpetual loop.
They kept dicking w/ the sound boards and stuff, it would come in, die,
then come back in. But the cool part was this gal who put on these
futuristic looking stilts, a weird kind of Storm Trooper helmet that lit
up, and these really bizzare Praying Mantis arms - the whole thing made her
like 7 or 8 feet tall, and she crouched up on stage, and danced around - it
really looked cool.
So then, another DJ, then this group called Headrillaz. I've never
heard of them before, but I am already anticipating the release of their
first CD! The band is made up of a live drummer, a keyboard player and one
guitarist (both bass and elec)and the lead vocals. The lead singer had
these long dreads, and a brittish accent - and let me tell you... these
fuckers ROCKED!!! They had kind of a Prodigy meets Nine Inch Nails sound.
They really screwed up the microphones, so I couldn't really hear what the
guy on vox had to say, but they sounded like cool lyrics. But they were
just awesome. Their first CD comes out Sept. 16th - and if you dig a
techno beat with serious synth and a hard guitar - these guys are what
you're looking for.
Then another DJ... followed by Moby. Since this was a dance floor,
there was just standing room, but I managed my way into the front. Moby
had his own keyboad, with drum machine, his own bongos, and his own snare
drums. Behind him was a purely bongo percussionist, a live drummer, and to
his right, a purely bass guitarist. He came out, simply said "Hello - my
name is Moby" and went right into Ah-Ah. He played about 10 songs (Next is
the E, Bring Back My Happiness, Move, Feeling So Real, Evertime You Touch
Me, and a couple of unreleased things that he didn't title), all in all
about an hour and 15 minute set - by the time he was done, I could see
about 250 - 300 people. He kept saying "Thank you, Thank you, Thank you"
after each song, and then did a small intro to each one like "This is
another Disco song that is really fun to play... it's called Move." I was
quite in awe - he kept jumping up and down, hitting his drum machine, then
turning around and hitting the drummer's cymbals, etc. I have been a very
large fan of Moby's music since about '92 and he has influenced me more
than any other artist, except maybe Trent Reznor, so... this was a kick ass
concert needless to say. I saw NIN in Denver with David Bowie (he played
for almost 2-1/2 hours) and I would have to say that Moby was ten times
better...
Two more DJ's were scheduled after him, with Banco De Gia, and Loop
Guru to follow.
I wanted to stay for Banco, but he would not go on until about 2:30 or 3:00
am, followed by Loop Guru at 4:00am (I saw Loop Guru earlier this year with
Orbital), but my girlfriend had to be to work by 9:00 am the next morn, so
I was merciful on her and we left after Moby. Picked up a t-shirt (they
had two for $15.00 a peice). All in all - a good night.
So there it is... the big top tour in 5 minutes or less.

I think he will have some more AR type stuff, included with hopefully
more of his older style stuff, and then I think he will have more of the
ambient/neo-classical stuff. I hope it has older style and
ambient/neo-classical, but who knows?

I'm serious this time!
PLEASE speak up if you have tickets in your hands that are to the show this
Saturday with Moby! I don't care WHAT you call it or where it's at. Is anyone
going to see Moby this Saturday?
My friends and I really want to go see Moby and I don't want to miss it! It's
less than a week away and I have NO CLUE if it's going to happen. I dialed up
a number saying that the show is a go, but the number I dialed was for a
Nocturnal Wonderland (although they never said it in the recording, it was what
I saw in Mean Street <a mag>) concert/rave. It sounded exactly like the line
up for Big Top. So what do I buy at Ticketmaster??
Any info would be greatly appreciated!

the compilation idea is this: members of the list either cover OR remix moby's
songs to make a compilation to send to moby.

Well, as EP's go, this one rocks. Even with the inclusion of previously
recorded material, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Go and AhAh are
both significantly altered from their original versions (they're both
faster, for one thing, Go is a cross of the delerium and woodtick mixes,
AhAh gets chopped in about half). GMOTFOTW is the Heat Mix that you
probably don't have unless you have the Mute Revolver Remixes cd single.
First Cool Hive is always a blessing. Oil 1 is remixed a bit, but I've
always thought of it as kind of a throw away track, as I have New Dawn
Fades. And just how many of us, even here on the list, ever got to hear
Grace (aka Underwater part two)?
But it's worth the price of the whole disc for the first two tracks. Novio
is simply one of the most beautiful pieces of music Moby's ever composed,
blatant Enya comparisons notwithstanding. And the Bond Theme just has big,
big hit written all over it. It really, truly rocks in the best way music
should rock.
For nine-tenths of the people who are going to buy this record, this will
be all new material. We can grouse and gripe about all the newbies who are
going to fall in love with Moby for the JBT and don't know his vast musical
history. But I say welcome 'em in the fold, indoctrinate them, and then
make 'em all go out and find all the rarities and weird stuff we all spend
our lives hunting down.

I tried until 3am, but it didn't happen.
This *morning* however, it appears to be up there. I've only got a 14.4
connection so it was pretty terrible and kept cutting off. I ended up
closing the connection after Ah-Ah, Bring Back My Happiness & Move....
What I heard did sound pretty good though (I wish I had a cable modem)....
Take care.

On my relentless pursuit of Moby mixed pieces I've only recently found

which I've seen new for about $25. It's got remixes by a good number of

don't like the Shamen's vocals (they ruin the music for me). Has anyone heard

BTW, even though his "real" name is Richard Melville Hall, Moby
simply goes by the name Moby. As he said in an online chat, he is
not conditioned to responding to the name Richard. He has been
going by the nickname Moby since he was a baby.
Just thought I'd mention this little factoid.

I always thought it would be neat if four of my favorite Richards toured
together:
Richard Hall (duh)
Richard James (Aphex)
Richard Hawtin (Plastikman)
Richard Fearless (Death In Vegas)
They've all got a fair amount of musical material in common-it could happen

[was Re: (mobility) Whooohooo!]
There are four versions of "Drop A Beat" that I am aware of. The
first, without a mix name, appeared on the rare _Instinct Dance_
compilation (which I like to think of as Moby's zeroth album,
since all of the music is by him but is made to look like a
compilation of four artists). The second, sometimes referred to
as the Barracuda Mix, is on the _Drop A Beat_ single and Moby's
self-titled album. It is the same as the Instinct Dance version,
but minus the brief vocal sample at the end, making the ending
slightly better. Then there is the Deep Mix, which was on the DAB
single and is now widely available on _Rare: The Collected B-Sides_
which Instinct put out last year. It is an okay mix, quite
different from the energetic original, but not spectacular.
Finally, there is The New Version, which is on _The Story So Far_,
the somewhat hard to find British counterpart to _Moby_. This
is a shorter and more frenzied version of DAB. Moby plays uses
this version or a slight variation of it at his live shows.
The _Drop A Beat_ single is indeed rare, but fortunately all of
its four tracks [DAB, DAB (Deep Mix), Electricity, UHF 2] can be
obtained by buying the _Moby_ and _Rare_ albums, both of which
contain plenty of high-quality early Moby techno tracks. So all
you're missing by not having the DAB single is the cover art --
not a big loss. There is no amazing collection of "Drop A Beat"
remixes like there are for more recent tracks.

i just slapped on my brand new copy of moby's "james bond theme (moby's
re-version)" on 12". since i'm feeling particularly full of myself, i'll
give you a play by play of what i think.
a1: (6:07) cj bolland's dubbel oh heaven mix - classic bolland here. ie:
good! nice and fast and pounding. not much else, but still oddly good.
a2: (5:05) moby's extended mix - er...can you say CHEMICAL BROTHERS boys and
girls? a real rip off of their style, but hey, everyone else is doing it,
why not moby? someone mentioned it's tounge-in-cheekness and i agree. there
is just something really playfull about it. at least he's not singing...
oh....OH!...i like the break...kinda like U2 with moby strings. i think
he needs to patent that string sound he always seems to have.
b1: (11:57) danny tenaglia's twilo mix - another pounder. this one's a bit
slower and housy. OH! i love the pong, pizzacato sound. viva la
FAITHLESS! i also like this break. spooky. this doesn't seem to really
be going anywhere tho. zzzzz.....this is waaaay too long for it's own good.
b2: (2:01) bonus beats - just the beats from the moby mix filling up the
end of the side.
all in all i'd say this is a good hunk of plastic. the a side is probably
the only worthwhile stuff, but it's very good stuff. when i get my copy
of "i like to score" in one or two weeks, i'll let you all know what i
think of that too, because, well, you can't stop me!

A Best Buy near me used to have a couple copies. I'm glad I grabbed
mine, because _The Ultimate Go_ is a good single. If it had the
Rainforest Mix too, then it would be a great single! The Jam & Spoon
mixes are nice, but the In Dub Mix is kind of ruined by annoying
"we are the future" and crying baby samples.

Okay, it's not rare rare, but it's rare enough. I have a hard time
finding any early Instinct releases. Even though I eventually did
find them, I would still say they're pretty rare. I've never seen
any in a music store, where you're lucky if there's something besides
Moby's albums.

If you get the two CD collection Rare: The Collected B-Sides the
second CD is just a butload of Go remixes. Including the Jam & Spoon

Hey...here are the facts...The show started three hors late...but that was
forgiveable.
The Moby tee's were only $15...that was a plus. 808 State was good...System 7
rocked the house, the DJ's were average. Here is the kicker...i met up with
Damian at the show and we were there a good 5 hours early.we were hoping to
catch sight of the Mob-ster...no luck. About 10pm i saw a skinny little bald
guy with a cross tattooed on the back of his neck walk by me...so i quickly
caught up to the man(who was walking with his girlfriend) and said "Hi". He
returned the greating and we proceeded to talk until I remembered that i had
a demo tape of my songs in my backpack and i gave it to him...he told me he
ould definitly listen to it and get back to me...YAY!!!! So...i then got his
girlfriend to take a picture of us...and well...i got a whole bunch of other
good pictures of Moby onstage too...i'm going to get them scanned and put
them on the net somewhere...
you'll all hear about Damians experience too i'm sure...
DJ TRIPP
p.s. he also signed my t-shirt with a one horned little idiot moby in my
friends dark red lipstick...man ...he's the nicest guy you could ever
meet...(besides me) :)

Where Are you now? Moby.
In which Stories catches up with a slippery rock 'n' roll personage.
Q. Have you ditched the thrash metal style of your last album, Animal
Rights?
Moby: I might not make a record as hard and obscure as Animal Rights but
I certainly haven't given up on guitar music because I've been playing
guitars for 22 years. I love punk rock and I've included a version of a
Joy Division track on my forthcoming compilation album, I Like to Score,
which is out in a couple of months. There are also guitars on my version
of the James Bond movie theme for instance.
Q: Was the 007 theme a difficult assignment?
M: Yes. It's obviously one of the biggest movies of the year and I had
to do something which I was happy with, but which could also be played
in every country in the Western world.
Q: Are you still going to produce the next Guns N'Roses album?
M: I don't think so/ Axl called me up last spring with the idea of
working on the record. So I went to Los Angeles, hung out with them and
listened to a lot of music. They've got some great stuff and I love the
direction they're going in, but I don't think I'm going to produce the
album because I can't face the idea of moving to LA for 8 months. That's
the way I'm thinking at the moment, although I haven't actually told
them yet. I hope I'll be working on the album in some way. I know,
financially, it's not the smartest move I'll ever make but I've got too
many things happening to relocate to California for half the year.
Q: Has the success of the Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers in America
made people more aware of your own music?
M: It has, but I confused a lot of people with Animal Rights so they
don't know whether to fit me into the 'electronica' thing or not. I
intentionally alienated a lot of people in the dance world because I'm a
selfish artist. I don't know how far electronic dance music can grow in
America because it's very short on personalities. I like music personas.
For most people that's a big part in the attraction of certain bands or
artists.
Q: Your music is featured heavily in movies such as Heat, The Fifth
Element, Scream and The Saint. You've also written your first full film
score for Double Tap. What's it like being a techno act in Hollywood?
M: Heat was the one that really showed me how much money is thrown away
in Hollywood. They'd bring in an orchestra, record for a few days and
then scrap the whole thing without a second thought of the cost. There
are various other movie-related projects coming together at the moment.
The most recent one was a collaboration with Butthole Surfers for the
Spawn movie. I had this strange preconception that they were going to
spread shit all over each other before we started but they were very
bright gentlemen.
Q: Have you started on your next album yet?
M: I've recorded a few ideas but don't expect to release anything until
late 1998. It's good to work on my own without any inconvenience.

Anyone else catch it? There were thousands there! I'm really surprised at the
posts about other Big Top tours with only a few hundred people, this
fairgrounds was PACKED! I'm not good with estimates, but walking around after
Moby's set, I would assume there were well over 5 thousand people there.
About Moby live: He rocked the house! I felt like EVERYONE was there to see
Moby. The first four groups, Banco de Gaia (sp), Loop Guru, 808 State, and bt
had people dancing, but we were packed like sardines when Moby came on (at
least in the very front).
I was afraid that I would be disappointed with Moby live because all the music
is on DAT but it really didn't matter! bt on the other hand, SUCKED big time
because of the DATs. I think he might have been worse than the Chemical
Brothers IMHO. He tried to fake it way too much...
Moby puts on one hell of a show and his energy and sincerity really comes
through to the audience. I really did feel pure joy. He played exactly the
same songs as the Real Audio concert if I remember correctly (and in the same
order too). He mentioned the name "I Need You" but didn't mention that the
song is unreleased. I love this song, I'd love to have it on CD.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. I got one of Moby's drumsticks when the security
tossed about four of them out to the front after Moby got offstage. The
drumstick is tore up completely. I'm wondering how you get gashes throughout
the WHOLE stick (especially the part you hold).
