Cover price is $17.50, however UPS I am told is $10, so basically it works
out at a $7.50 saving on mail order! OK, so not quite the deal I had
originally thought, but still much cheaper than the usual mail order route
(and cheaper than online stores!).

 Now if we could only remember where we put it

 Bryan Carroll and Melissa Witkowski report:
 Yesterday, in a mildly surprising move, Thom Yorke
threw a bone to
 overzealous Radiohead fans worldwide by providing the
complete
 tracklisting for their forthcoming LP, Amnesiac.
Yorke dropped the
 sequence in a discussion on Radiohead's official
message board.,p. The
 11-song album will contain a new recording of Kid A's
"Morning Bell," to
 be coupled with the title track and featured as a
medley. According to
 the Green Plastic website, the first and as yet only
single from the
 album, "Pyramid Song," should be out sometime in May.
Yorke also
 mentioned that the band is currently hard at work
polishing off b-sides
 for potential singles. It should be mentioned that
Radiohead insiders
 have speculated that Yorke's announcing Amnesiac's
tracklist is merely
 a minor cog in a grand, last ditch effort to avoid
being voted off of the
 virtual "Rock 'n' Roll Survivor" island. Or to try to

Mobility, and I always love hearing people say nice
things about the show.


Wow, I actually havent heard S&O's version of "Trucks
And Cars", I only know the version by Jeremy Burns on
the tribute album..... its sort of a reggae version,
its really nice... "this one's for all the trucks and
cars in the universe, in the universe, in the
universe... and this song is for little boys is
plastic blue windbreakers in ten speeeeeeeds... this
songs for all the chicks and the dudes in the
universe" and the lines about evil grey monkeys that
haunt meeeeeeeeee (i don't want no friggin monkeys
usin' my toilets! you hear me???) and comin home in
someone else's undies etc...

But does that song really have the same drumbreak as
South Side? really? I have heard that break in a few
acid jazz/downtempo type songs actually....

Is anybody here into Jeff Mills?  He played at the State Theatre last night here in Detroit (last time i went there it was to see Mooooooooooooby). It was amazing how he was set up on the stage behind a huge white block with him in the middle and purple and green lights.  What was really cool about the show was that he played a variety of styles of music just all over the place throughout the show.  Sometimes he would have a totally old school block where he would play dance songs from the 80s and then the 90s and then fuse them with some jungle and some housey build ups. He also played a lot of his fusions with German techno that he did for Tresor which is like a compilation of "detroit and german techno brought together".  There was a really nice crowd at the show too.  Many different people from different walks of life. It was really nice for me to go see too after having taken three exams yesterday. He cancelled his show last year because not that many people bought ticket!
s or whatever but i think that h
e's a lot more popular in the entertainment scene because the detroit electronic music festival brought the detroit techno scene into the open for more people to listen to.
Anyway, I'm at work right now so I should be more ethical and get off the web...

Mills and watch that movie.  I love Metropolis and I watch it every year when
they show it at at a Film theatre with a live score by a group of three men
with a ten piece drumset and a wind and a string instrument called the alloy
orchestra.

just checked out the line up and i'm totally jealous that i can't be there.
Jane's Addiction! Saw them a few times around 'Nothing's Shocking' and
'Ritual...' (one time in a 200 capacity venue) they were totally mind
blowing. Does anyone know if they're planning on releasing any new stuff?
Iggy Pop - simply the best! Seen him about 200 hundred times. 'The Idiot' is
one of my favorite albums (if you haven't got this one you should check it
out). Roni Size Reprazents - amazing live and on record. Del tha Funki
Homosapien - what a star (under rated MC I reckon - his first album is still
one of my faves), Fatboy Slim (he lives over the road from me:) ), Kruder
and Dorfmeister - the original downtempo wierdbeat wierdos, Photek, Bad
Company, Smith and Mighty - drum'n'bass at its best, Adam Freeland - hey he
lives down the road from me! Are you sure this festival isn't in Brighton!
I can't believe how excellent this line up is and can only hope that someone
in the UK will have the guts to put together an event as good as this here.
I hope you who go to it enjoy it. Write reviews and keep us informed.

I'm making a Moby megamix of all his best slower, groovy tracks before 1993
(including tracks like Thousand & Drop a beat would be difficult because of
the giant bpm leap the mix should have to make)  I'm not a Dj, so it will be
a studio mix, where studio is a big word for my PC running CoolEdit :)

The mix is coming along quite nicely (if I say so myself) and it already has
these tracks:

- Intro (with the beat from Go (Barracuda Mix))
- Go (Woodtick Mix)
- Party Time (with rap by Miker G and *vocals* mixed in!)
- Next Is The E (Synthe Mix)
- Permanent Green (With rap by Nasty Cat mixed in!)

I think I will make the mix 8-10 tracks long, depending on how many songs I
can find that can be put at 126 bpm without sounding like crap :)  A few
tracks I have in mind are:

- Drug Fits the Face
- Breathe
- Barracuda
- Some more Acapella rap I have (to be mixed in).
- A track from the Brainstorm EP
- Time Signature or Mobility
- UHF

Unfortunately the eventual mp3 file will probably be close to 20 MB and I
have no CD writer... Perhaps I can make a Realaudio file for my webpage for
the people with lesser bandwidth.

Okay, you've inspired me Bart!  If anyone remembers almost a year ago I
hosted the mobility FTP.  I was really surprised at the amount of people who
actually contributed to it.  People uploaded over 2 gigs of really cool
shit, including unreleased stuff and live tracks.  I had to take it down
because I went on a study abroad program to Japan, and I've been too lazy to
put it back up.  However, tonight I cristen the reopening of the Mobility
FTP site.  here is the FTP:

At first I'll just post the live stuff, but Bart, feel free to upload your
remixes, if you don't mind I'll also reencode them to say 128kbps for those
unwilling to d/l real quality shit.  If you don't have time to u/load them
then let me know where I can d/l them then I'll post them.  If neither of
these is good, email me personally and We'll work something out.

Something else that no one ever bothered to upload were any tracks to Thanks

I don't know why but the network I'm on was down all night.  It should be
okay now though.  In fact the dowload count already shows some people have
gotten through.  I don't know why, but you may not be able to see certain
files if you use cuteFTP.  I ftped in on a unix server and everything was
fine, as well as the default windows FTP, but for some reason when I use
cuteFTP only the directories are there.  It may just be me, but if you ahve
any more troubles try a different ftp program.  Netscape also seems to work
fine, so use that if nothing else.

Also, next week is my spring break, and though I'll leave my server on if
something goes wrong I won't be here to restart it, so it if it goes down it
will be down all next week.

I have CuteFTP 4.0 and indeed, it doesn't work... Internet Explorer 4 also
doesn't work...
Do I really need Netscrape or a UNIX based system to access the Mobility
ftp? Last year I had
no trouble at all using CuteFTP...

So I'm sorry, I won't be uploading the megamix to this ftp. When the mix is
finished I'll make an
account for Mobility on my own ftp server, which happens to support CuteFTP
and all versions of IE.

A shame of all nice live stuff I can't up/download now..

Oh no! After a few days of working in my spare time on this mix I found out
a strange thing: the song Voodoo Child (no matter what mix) is not mixable
with any other old Moby track, it has such a strange beat and building of
the measures.. After 2 days of trying, I now finally removed this track from
the mix, I hope you'll forgive me :)  I don't hope there are going to be
more of these setbacks.
I'll try to have finished the mix before the end of next week because I'm
also busy with school and stuff.

I have just been replaying Mobys' grammy preformance. The Blue man group
adds an interesting sound, and Jill Scotts voice is powerful. The best

yeah, i noticed, i peeped the mag again on the way
home from school. i'm so sorry!!!!!! i assumed she was
some braindead actress, you know, the kind spin
magazine are more likely to put on their cover. i'm so
sorry...

well, not THAT sorry... i was disapointed with her new
album ;P

oh also, i saw on the letters page, some guy is
complaining that Grandaddy made the "unheard" list
while LORD QUAS (Quasimoto, author of the absolute
BEST hip hop LP of 2000, "The Unseen" on Stones Throw
Records stonesthrow.com ;) and Sigur Ros made the
list. While Grandaddy did make a good album that did
receive some borderline-mainstream recognition (well,
rotation on mtv2 ;), lord quas and sigur ros
definitely made better albums, and i'm surprised spin
even covered them. i mean, sigur ros has been getting
unbearable indie hype, but most people slept on lord
quas.

nevertheless, godspeed you black emperor! made a
better album than sigur ros, so it's nice to see them
be recognized as "essential".......

oh yeah, someone also said primal scream's album
shouldve been listed in the spin top 20..... damn
right!

oh yeah, at spin.com at the article about their top 40
thingy, theres tons of pictures of moby and bono and
"that some chick", pj harvey. (*smacks self on head*
doyyeee....)

People are mailing me privately on how to obtain a copy of the mix.
I will make an account on my ftp server and post the address here so you can
all download it, but this will probably be tomorrow because I'm still
doubting whether I'll add an extra song to the mix between Besame and
Barracuda, they still don't mix well IMO...

Anyway, nobody is missing out on anything, I'll post the URL as soon as the

Good to hear from you again. Always a pleasure. St. Etienne are quite unlike
anyone else so it would be difficult to suggest similar bands. Have you
heard anything by Stereolab or Laika? Not the same, but in spirit quite
similar to St.Etienne - although more experimental.
As for English pop being more sophisticated that US pop... let's just say
we're in boy band, girl band, boy/girl band hell here. Just think Spice
Girls without talent!!!! Now that is hard to do I know so now imagine NSync
without talent!!! Or Backstreet Boys without... you get the picture.
Worryingly Moby has said he likes this kind of pop. Is he winding us up d'ya
think?
St Etienne themselves originated in the late 80s during the acid house
explosion. Other bands that were inspired by the free party scene and merged
that vibe with 60's pop sensibilties who emerged at the same time include
The Stone Roses. This era, some say, represented the golden era of UK pop.

First off, hats off for an excellent little mix of tracks. I'm sure all of
us long time fans will cherish this for the years to come. Solid production.
Permanent Green sounded really cool when it slammed in. This is a very
exciting turn into listening to Moby. Hopefully the mega mixes will not stop
here. One note however. I found the layered acapella rapping over the top of
the mix to be a little out of place, but it is your mix. I was wandering if
you had a mix without the rapping on top??? Anyway I hope everyone else
enjoys it.

I LOVED "One More Time" and it had me excited about this CD since I loved
"Homework". But I heard some of the other tracks off the new CD and thought
they sucked, now I'm really afraid to buy the CD. I'll have to sample it on
Napster and make my decision but not encouraged by the other stuff I heard
so far.

Its not supposed to be in the shops until April 1st, but if it already is

I just listened to it again. It sucks. I loved 'Homework' too, but this is
awful. Stick to Napster.

Here's a few recommendations though:

TPower - Long Time Dead (Botchit and Scarper), dark breakbeat stuff
Pressure Drop - Tread (Hard Hands/ Sony) deep funky drum'n'bass with dub
atmospheres
Skitz - Countryman (Ronin) who said the Bits can't make good hip hop - this
rocks
Jack Dangers (Meat Beat Manifesto) Mix album on Shadow - great funky breaks

But Daft Punk? Mais non mes amis

Si!! I was in Cusco ...

By the way, I was sitting in a bar in Argentina, and as always they had a
TV-set turned on. After a while you get used to ignoring these daytime
soap-operas ('telenovelas'). But this one caught my attention, because
everytime something 'exciting' happened to the lady in the series (for
instance, her lover would ring her up - exciting!! - close-up!! - phone near
mouth!!), they played this special tune.

Guess what ...: "The whispering wind"
It surely added to the atmosphere   ;-)

Child" in a recent of Queer as Folk, I've been turned on in
a big way to UK V2 europop artist Tin Star. Their current cd
"The Thrill Seeker" is emotive, layered, and full of great
beats. It's also on it's way to me via mail order as we
speak.

From Cincinatti, Over the Rhine's "Films For Radio" was
released on Tuesday. Like OtR's other releases, F4R is lush,
romantic, sensual, and breathtakingly cinematic. You can get
a good glimpse of the previous output at
www.overtherhine.com. Or catch them on the air with their
latest single, "Give Me Strength" (a foreign film), which is
a song written by Dido (who affects a similar vibe to OtR
chanteuse Karin Bergquist). Sarah McLachlan credits OtR's
1996 cd "Good Dog Bad Dog" (a phenomenal cd!) as inspiring
her to overcome writer's block during the production of
"Surfacing". Member of OtR have for the past few years been
a part of Cowboy Junkie's live and studio band. And an
episode of the XFiles from a few years back entitled "Alpha"
also contains many references to Over the Rhine.

heard it in your sleep. And it was just as hard to
escape Moby himself. After the Calvin Klein ads, the
dozens of talk show appearances, award show
performances, flashy music videos and a two-year world
tour, his became the most famous shaved head in rock
'n' roll since Billy Corgan, completely dispelling the
ongoing myth that one-man techno musicians would
remain forever unmarketable and unrecognizable.

Ironic that in 2001, the artists most poised to
capture the attention of America's dancefloors and
clothing stores are two people you wouldn't recognize
if you clocked them in the head with a glowstick.
French duo Daft Punk (Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel
De Homem-Christo) have purposely kept their mugs away
from magazine and television cameras, hiding behind
photo-shopped distortions and, this time around, robot
helmets to keep their identities as mild-mannered
house producers secret. With their latest release,
Discovery (Virgin), Daft Punk will once again prove
that popular artists don't necessarily need to be
recognizable to remain popular.

We couldn't think of two musical entities within the
electronic music genre that have found more acclaim
and adoration by using such diverse and conflicting
artistic ideals than Daft Punk and Moby. We also
couldn't think of any artists who might have more (or
perhaps less) to say to each other, if given the
opportunity. On January 30, 2001, during a New York
City listening party for Discovery, we introduced the
face of techno to the scene's most anonymous
producers, stepped back, and listened as they
discussed their shared love of American hip-hop, their
contrasting views on life in the limelight, and on
life in general, as touchstones to an entire
generation of musicians and DJs.

Moby: So I was listening to your new record, and it
seems like it's a lot less minimal than the first
album.

Thomas: Yes, it's very... maximal. We did minimal
stuff on Homework, and now we really wanted to break
every rule that we made on that record. We explored,
like, 40 ideas in a three-minute track rather than
using one idea over a 10-minute track. But you know
how it is to change from one album to the next. It's
more fun.

M: What were some of the things you were listening to
when you made this record?

Guy-Manuel: We listened to some albums when we were
making the album, but nothing that really influenced
us. I was listening to a lot of Foreigner.

T: I think we were not really listening to house.
House is starting to go... not in a vicious circle,
but it's always disco. That's good from time to time,
but... I was actually listening to a lot of American
hip-hop.

M: Modern hip-hop or old school?

T: Modern...

M: That's pretty much all I listen to.

T: Bands like OutKast show how open-minded musicians
can be, and that's really what we're trying to do in
electronic music; to have an open mind and really push
the limits. I think Timbaland as a producer, and
OutKast as artists, are really breaking the rules of
hip-hop and going further. We really like the sound of
American radio in general, in terms of compression and
dynamics. It's always been a very big influence to us.


M: Hip-hop radio in New York has always been very R&B
influenced, reggae influenced, soul influenced...
Sometimes I'll travel around the world and I'll meet
people who are into hip-hop, but they're only into the
really aggressive stuff. And it's strange because when
you go out to hip-hop clubs, it's supposed to be party
music and it's supposed to be sex music. But if you're
playing "Fuck Tha Police," it's really hard to get
your sexy groove on with someone. But that's why I
like Hot 97, the hip-hop radio station here in New
York, because it's a lot more R&B influenced. (pause)
So, what's the worst thing about living in France?

G: Um...the weather.

T: Yes...especially in the winter. It's very bad.
What's the worst thing about living in New York?

M: Well, it's a double-edged sword. One of the nice
things about living in New York now is that it's
cleaner, it's safer and there's less crime, but I
remember when I first moved here 12 years ago, New
York City was a really scary, but a very sexy place.
Now, it's more like cigar bars and expensive bottles
of wines, and limousines. It's very affluent, but it's
not as interesting as it used to be. I miss the dirty,
dangerous, sexy element of New York.

T: Does it affect your music?

M: Um...

T: Your music is cleaner...safer... (laughs)

M: I don't know, really... But one of the things I
particularly like about the career that you've had is
the fact that you've had the most unlikely hit
singles. I mean, "One More Time" is a great single,
but it's kind of obvious that it would be a hit. But
the singles off of Homework, I never thought they
would become hits.

T: It's always surprising. We make the music for
having fun ourselves, and we never think about whether
it will be popular or not, so it's always surprising.
It still is.
[The recognizable vibration of Daft Punk's "One More
Time" creeps through the wall of the office.]

M: God, I hear this song everywhere. I must have heard
it 50 times during France's NRJ Music Awards alone.
Every time they introduced someone, every time they
went to a commercial....

T: Honestly, watching the TV show was like.... every
time they would say "and the winner is...," they would
play "One More Time." All my friends were phoning me
saying, "Are you there?" Everyone was expecting us to
win an award or something.

M: It always makes me nervous hearing my songs in that
context. If I'm watching TV, or in a nightclub, and I
hear one of my songs, that's when I expect everyone to
suddenly stop liking what I do. Like, this is when
everyone is going to stop dancing, turn on me, tear me
limb from limb and throw me out the window. But one of
the nice things about making records is that when you
put it out into the world, you put it out in so many
myriad contexts. Right now out there, this song is
being played and one person might have just broken up
with their girlfriend, another person might be trying
to pick up that girl, one person might have gotten
fired from their job. The song means something
different to everyone who hears it. Multiply that by a
hundred million... You can't control all the different
contexts, which is kind of exciting.

T: There's no way to imagine it. When you look at the
airplay charts in the U.K., it estimates the number of
people the song reached that week, and I think the
number one song reaches 90 million people, just in the
U.K. alone. When you're making music, it is a very
personal experience, but once you release it, you
can't really control what kind of effect it will have
and what the context will be.

M: Can you explain the idea behind the robots masks?

T: The story is that we were in the studio making
music on the night of September 9, 1999, and there was
the 9-9-99 bug. There was a big explosion, and we
don't remember anything after that, but we woke up and
we were robots. We just like the idea of visually
doing things differently and not doing the same thing
twice. We were wearing different kinds of masks in the
past and not having a definite identity; doing this is
a different approach, but not entirely opposite to
what we have done in the past.

M: When I was growing up, every musician I ever really
liked - people like Miles Davis and Prince and Johnny
Rotten - they all did interviews and they all took
pictures and they all played concerts. I knew what
they all looked like. So when I made a record and the
record company wanted me to do a photo shoot, I said
'yes.' I never really thought about it. I don't think
I was ever smart enough to approach it that way you
did...

G: Maybe at the time when we were younger, we saw the
bad side of managers and record companies using rock
bands like puppets... and we didn't want it that for
ourselves. We didn't ever understand why it should be
systematic that just because you make music, you
should appear on the cover of a magazine...

T: As human.

G: Yes, as human. At the time people wanted us to be
in magazines, I don't think we were making much more
than a baker or a shoe-maker. And they are not on the
cover of magazines.

M: But one of the nice things about culture is the
fact it democratic. The reason that actors and
musicians are on the cover of magazines and not bakers
and shoe-makers is because ultimately, people want to
know more about actors and musicians.

T: Because it makes them dream.

M: For myself...I am more likely to read a book about
Miles Davis than one about a baker.

T: Yes, that's true, but...the question was really
about trying to do things differently. We don't have
anything against people who are trying to be exposed.
For me personally, I was so much more into cinema and
really worshipping filmaking and directors, and I
really liked the fact that there's much less media
emphasis on directors. We like the idea of separating
ourselves physically from what we are doing.

M: I've been criticized for being too public, going to
too many awards shows and doing many photo shoots. But
my feeling is that there are so many different ways to
approach making records and being a public figure,
it's not like one is better or worse than another.
They can all co-exist peacefully.

T: Exactly. It's not like we are saying that everyone
should become robots or never appear in their photos.
We're not saying that should be the rule
because...there are no rules. You can do what you
want. We're not doing something that's so different
from Kiss and the Residents, really. Music can be a
mystery. There was a lot of that in glam-rock, where
you really didn't know the personality of the people
making the music.

M: Right, it was about creating a new personality
altogether.

T: I think Marilyn Manson is a good example of that,
because what he exposes is one truth about who he is,
but you don't really know. Whether you like the music
or not, his approach raises questions. It's a
different form of expression, and it makes it more
interesting.

M: And it's good theater.

T: Yeah, it's just show business.

M: Every interview I have done in France for the last
two years, I've gotten asked what I think of the
French Touch, and the French house scene in general.
It's interesting because for a long time, French music
culture only stayed in France because of the language
barrier. But with the French dance scene, people
outside of France know about it. And that's nice
because I think the French influence is really
healthy.

T: Yes, but...when you look at every artist's
initiative in France, they all go in a very personal
direction. It's not just a pure French thing that's
going on. The influences are much bigger.

G: Maybe it's different from your point of view, but I
think our mindset is that what is happening in France
is no different from what's happening in the rest of
the world. When electronic music was coming out of the
U.S. and England about 10 years or so ago, there was
very little coming from France. But I think it's more
about having French artists and French music coming up
to the level of the rest of the world. Electronic
music is world music. It's more like France is showing
the same kind of feelings towards the music that the
rest of the world has felt.

M: That is one of the nice things about electronic
music - that it's so international. Back when I DJed a
lot, you'd never know where the records were coming
from. Maybe a record was made in Italy, but the
producers are from France, using an American vocalist.


G: I think that electronic music is pretty serious
because it's gathering people. There are people who
never thought that this music could ever be as
important as it is. Every time we get the chance to go
in some far country, like Japan, we see that people
are understanding the vibe and the feeling. It shows
that this music can be much more powerful than anybody
thought.

call me old fashioned Bart but I reckon a great album should be full of
great tunes, not half full. Agree that there is some good stuff on the

am going to go get that album."  You spend the $20 and get it home.  Pop it
in your cd-player and yeah those two songs are good, but the rest of the
album sucks.  Fortunately Moby has yet to disappoint me.  But there have
been many who I get the impression that they had 2 songs that were good and
wanted to get an album out so they threw together 8 more songs without much
thought just so that they could get their album out.

On another note, I went and visited some friends of mine a few weeks ago and
the last time I was there before this I has played for them MobySongs.  Of
course they had heard a lot of stuff off of Play, but they didn't know any
of his older stuff.  They were greatly impressed and now have gone out and
bought every Moby album they could find.  I thought this was very cool.

By the way, the Moby MegaMix you made Bart was very enjoyable to listen to.
Actually I am listening to it as I write.

My experience is that on every album there are some tracks I find less nice.
Some rare exceptions are:
- Moby - Everything Is Wrong
- Metallica - Ride The Lightening
- The Aloof - Sinking
- Leftfield - Leftism
- Air - Moon Safari
- The Gentle waves - Swansong For You
- Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain

And it is stupid to buy an album just for the 2 songs you heard on the
radio, I always *listen*
to CD's I think are interesting first, it saves me a lot of money :)

Has anyone successfully downloaded the Moby Mega-Mix yet?
I was just wandering what others thoghts were?
I posted this review a few days ago.


First off, hats off for an excellent little mix of tracks. I'm sure all of
us long time fans will cherish this for the years to come. Solid production.
Permanent Green sounded really cool when it slammed in. This is a very
exciting turn into listening to Moby. Hopefully the mega mixes will not stop
here. One note however. I found the layered acapella rapping over the top of
the mix to be a little out of place, but it is your mix. I was wandering if
you had a mix without the rapping on top??? Anyway I hope everyone else
enjoys it.

It's hard to find in the States because as far as I know it was withdrawn
from release here over a dispute with the record company. Copies did make
it to stores my brother has one but no furhter copies were pressed. It's
possible they've worked this out and have re-released it but I'm not sure.

I'll encode a vocal-less version of it soon, however I used the vocals as a
sort of
tape to get 4 measure based songs to stick to 2 measure based ones. (I have
absolutely no musical background, so I hope I made clear what I wanted to
say)
I also added the vocals because I really like that hip-house sound of the
early '90s,
this mix allowed me to express my frustration regarding the fact that Moby
never
used party raps in his older tracks.  :P

I don't really feel the raps are out of place, sure they aren't Moby, but
the raps I used
are from '90 - '91 and originally were the raps for songs not too different
from Moby's
tracks at the time.

To hear for yourself, the originals are:
MC Miker G - Show 'em the bass
2 Static ft. Nasty Cat - Feel that beat

Anyhow, I'm glad my first attempts to make a megamix are received so well :)
Considering
the fact I hadn't worked with any multitrack music software before.

For this Moby mix I used a pretty dated version of Cool Edit Pro (I believe
it is from 1998)
I heard from a friend that the very inexpensive (and a bit old too) 'Radio
538 Music Maker' is
much easier to use than Cool Edit. Unfortunately the 538 Music Maker is out
of production..
If you have a really powerful processor and lots of memory, you could also
try Magix Music Maker,
as I've heard the latest versions are very resource-consuming...

I liked the raps. It gives a Steinski feel to the mix. (I noticed the
Lesson 2 intro. :])

You can also try ProTools Free <http://www.digidesign.com/ptfree/>.
This is a free version of the professional-grade software, and I've
used it to make some mixes.

really just a stupid way to dress up their interview.

i was very disapointed with one more time. i thought
it was just too corny. i thought they'd be above using
those cheesy eiffel 65/basement jaxx processed vocals.
and pagan, we've gone thru this anti-jaxx thing
before, so keep quiet or eat steak! ;P sorry, i always
wanted to say that, hehe...


anyway, i NEVER buy cds anymore. no, i don't have
napster. i have a radio station with a computer that
can burn cds. they don't have AS MUCH music as
napster, but its just as bad for the record industry
;P
besides that, i'm broke.

so, i never have to hear 2 songs on the radio and buy
a crappy album, cause i never buy albums, and i can
always preview the albums i burn copies of! (even tho
i don't, half the time...) and when i do buy stuff,
its cause i've heard it so much i'm driven to buying
it (godspeed you black emperor!, etc)

however, most of the moby cd's i have, which are a lot
by my standards, are new. so he's definitely made a
few bucks off of me ;P (unlike, say, guided by
voices... oh boy... ;)

This is a major benefit of the Napster technology. There's been many a CD
where I've heard a track that blew me away so I went on Napster, sampled
the other tracks and if I like what I hear I go and buy the CD. If I don't
like what I hear I save some $$ and don't buy it period.

OK, two skinny guys from Paris (one pimply and short, the other pimply and
tall - both with hair) against one skinny, small, bald guy from New York.
Sounds like a pretty dull fight to me... unless they try to talk each other
into submission. In which case Guy Manuel would be in trouble in the first
round. In my experience he would spend the first twenty minutes pretending
he couldn't speak English (despite having met a number of times before to
share perfectly enjoyable conversations - in English) before offering a
profound nugget in perfect English. But Moby would probably spend just as
much time apologizing for not speaking perfect French which would give Guy
Manuel an unfair advantage in the psychological stakes. Thomas would then
probably talk endlessly about nothing that any one understands, a trick
which would leave most dumbstruck (with the obvious exception of the boys
from Air, who are equally capable of endlessly talking in mysterious ways).
Moby would be caught off guard for a few minutes but following a little bit
of analysis would come back with his secret weapon, a fully rationalized
discussion based on a thread of Thomas' nonsensical spiel. The killer blow
here would be for him to suggest that Daft Punk are, and always have been
retro artists - dance music's own Oasis in fact. This would bring both GM
and T out fighting in perfectly comprehensible English, arguing as if their
lives depended on it. Thus unmasked Moby would be outright winner. If he
failed to spot this Achilles heal his only other option would be to
challenge them to a statistics war. And since there isn't a second in the
day in which Moby's music isn't on the radio/ tv/ movies etc, somewhere in
the world, he would crush the Daft Punk boys into the ground.
If Moby was a Pokemon, what would his name be?

This new record does not have a title or a release date just yet, but the

Hi Clan,

I've made a version 2 of the mobility tag which is 60% of the size of the
other one.  For those of you that have the last one, this is much more user
friendly.  They will cost $2 or equivalent and I accept paypal.
I've already sent them out to those that I have promised better ones to
including Jake (rockmanrock) who left the list but wanted a tag when i first
made them.  If you are interested please send me a note and I will give you
my address:)
I would make a scan to show you what it looks like but my computer's in a
bunch of pieces all over my bed.

seriously, not bad on the mix job.  i seemed to
have skimmed that you used sound forge for it to
mix over the hip-hop samples (which i thought
were very well placed contrary to popular belief
on the list).  did you mix the rest of it, or did
you cheat with sound forge the whole way?

I'm the one that cheats with sound forge... I think Bart
cheats with Cool Edit. It think I'm going to start cheating
with Acid of Vegas soon instead.

I've mixed a track or two from cd's at the local discotheque
(and firmly astonished the resident dj's that I didn't wreck
the whole thing. I learned just by watching... but I don't
think I could handle vinyl... but it would be fun to give it
a try), but I'm still clearly a novice. I think I could get
pretty good at it if I got the equipment on which to practice.

I said on forehand I would cheat all the way :)  I'm not a dj,
I'm just a guy with a bpm counter, a computer and a passion
for old school dance music.

And about the mix being short:  A song duration of 1:30 min. is
very common for (greatest hits) megamixes of one artist like the
ones one often finds as b-sides on maxi CD singles etc.

I know Ryu relased one CD that has his Unloved Symphony cover from Thanks 1
on it. That's the only Thanks song I have. I don't think he has it anymore,

Whats up Mobility. Must have been 2 years or something since I last posted....
Ah, the good old days back in 1997, 98, even 99. Amazing how things change so
quickly. While I am so happy for Moby, and I'm sure I'll get flamed for this
or something, I have a feeling that a lot of the old guys here can agree with
me (maybe even Paul, if he is still around, would agree with me - and I never
agreed with anything he said...) For me, I love Moby's music. But I never
realized until Play came out (a CD I didn't like so much) that one of things I
also liked was saying I love Moby, and having people say, who's Moby? It was
cool to like Moby back then, and then tell your friends and introduce him and
some would like him and some wouldn't, but anyway, it was cool. It's not cool
anymore, and it really got me. I guess that means I don't really appreciate it
or whatever, but I don't care. I think he is great and I love the man, I am
just afraid to say it in public anymore....

Anyway, the point is, as I will be going back to Japan in May and not taking
my CD collection with me, I have decided to sell my 100 plus Moby CD
collection. Included are sought after CDs such as Underwater and UHF, as well
as other older and sort of rare singles (the real go, hymn, I don't know... a
lot of them) and numerous promos (tons from Play, that 2CD one in the rubber
sleave (forgot the name, but off of AR), 3 copies of the 2CD Animal Rights,
and I don't know what else. Anyway, before I go offer it to the masses on
eBay, I was wondering if anyone is interested in buying them all or parts, or
just what you all think of how much they are worth (I guess only the really
hard to get ones). Just wanted to get your info.... Anyway, I love(d) you
guys, and as my progression from posting everyday and competing with Steve and
Bart for new CDs has turned into les posting, then digest status, and soon to
be removed from the list (probably, but I doubt I can do it....) I just wanted
to pop in one more time and say Whats up. Later.

see, i find this all a bit strange. back in the day moby could be seen
performing 'go' on top of the pops in the uk. he was in the pop charts. he
was all over the media. he played at all of the major raves. so, from a
british point of view, when exactly was moby unknown, underground and (your
word) cool? he went out of favor with the uk press for a while, but he also
continued to have top thirty hit singles. when exactly was he that
underground that only a selected few were his true fans?

the fact is he was always good, occasionally great, sometimes a genius, a
few times bad (my opinion). you may not have liked Play, but it wasn't by
any stretch of the imagination his first hit record.
I think its as uncool to like moby now as it has ever been. or is that cool?
who cares really, it all boils down to snobbery.

music is there to be shared, no one should be allowed to lay claim to it
through their position of privilege.

Ok, I'll try to explain (and I'm speaking for myself, not for AJ, because I
don't know his motivations).

Moby always used to be one of the popular 'underground' artists. With this I
mean artists that make
hitsingles but also put out weird stuff under different names etc. Artists
that have both hit potential
and musical credibility. Other examples of these artists are Leftfield,
Kosheen, Faithless, Air etc.
(just naming the electronic ones)

I don't know what exactly happened to make me feel Moby is no longer one of
them, perhaps it's the
over-promotion by V2 over the last year, perhaps it's the re-release of
WDMHFSB? by Mute, or just me
being in my "I hate the world and everything is wrong" phase, I don't
know... But if it is just me, then why
are more people having this feelings?

I think this all is about feeling special, if you're a collector of anything
you will understand. It's nice to have
a small community of people who share the same (exclusive) interest. If you
are one of that select group
it makes you feel special, and don't we all want to feel special in some
way? right. Wouldn't you want to
be able to wear the clothes you really like *without* everybody else wearing
those same clothes?

In a capitalistic society like the one we live in, exclusiveness means
status means coolness.

Now bringing this back to Moby. I think Moby really wasn't as mainstream
with Go as with singles from Play.
Go, at the time was only loved by people from 18-28 whereas Play does well
in all age cathegories.
If I would ask a 45 year old person if they knew the artist Moby in 1991, I
would probably get the same
answer as if I were to ask my mom who Faithless is now.  And Faithless is
well known in a certain age
group, but is not considered to be the mainstream act like the Vengaboys.
I'm not saying that people of
a certain age can't like Moby, it's just an example of how there was still
exclusiveness (coolness, if you want)
about his older work, and that now you can't really describe the "Moby fan"
any more, it's not a type of people,
a group any more. For all you know, the pope could be a huge Moby fan.

And that is what I miss, a small group of people that because of the
intimacy of the group could share their
every feeling and it would be understood. Suppose you have a small group of
real friends and you would
always have the same chairs at a quiet little bar in your hometown. Would
you like it if that bar all of a sudden
became the hottest place in town, stuffed with hundreds of strange visitors?
Wouldn't you go and find
another place?   I'm not saying those new people at the bar should go away,
they could all well be really nice
people, who knows, but the sudden change would make you feel uneasy,
wouldn't it?

I rest my case...

I do agree with Bart.  I was never part of the 'Mobility' group but I only
knew of one other person who knew of Moby and we shared a lot together and it
felt good.  I am really annoyed when someone tries to impress me by telling
me they LOVE 'Southside.'  Personally I could live happily if I never had to
hear that song ever again.  Oh well.  I was actually looking to see if anyone
knew the lyrics for 'Helpless'.  I listen to it often and I sing along and I
really hate when it comes to the parts I don't know.  I checked most of the
sites under lyrics but I didn't see it.  Does anyone know them or where I can

I agree with everythign that Bart said, but have more to say. This kind
of stuff happens to everyone with everything. People who used to love
wraps (the sandwichy food) 10 years ago, people who used to shop in
Abercrombie and Fitch (5 years ago), people who lived in silicon valley
15 years ago.... The list of examples ca nbe broght from anywwhere, but
it happens all the time.
    As for me, it was almost like a game. I could listen to Moby and then I
could tell me friends about him. I could go to a club or watch a movie
or something and every so often Moby (or something like him) would come
on and I would listen and kinda feel good if it was Moby. (People would
talk of a Moby spotting on M2 at like 3 in the morning). I would go CD
shopping and ignore stores like TOWER and HMV (for the simple reason
they didn't have Moby - the techno section comprised of crapy house
compilations) and look for the hidden away stores that might have
something. I could do a search on eBay and get 45 results instead of 600
(which meant none of these crap like now - "neatly ripped out ad with
Moby from Rolling Stone" type stuff). I could check my email, get
something from mobility but something that I was actually interested in
reading.  We used to talk about Moby and how it would be so awesome if
he got famous so everyone could know him. I guess I should be careful
what I wish for, because I never imagined it like this. And Moby was
NEVER popular like this in the UK. There are plenty of bands on the
charts in America that no one has ever heard of
    Anyway, the point is that while Moby (like Wraps and Abercrombie and
fitch) may not have changed, everythign around him has. I never did
recommend Play even when it first came out in99 and Moby was popular
because I didn't really like the album. But now that everywhere is Play
overload it kinda of detracts from all his other great stuff (for me
anyway). Maybe I would've been more happy if he got famous off of ETW or
something like that, but I don't know. Anyway, I wanted to Thank Bart
for his other mail to me, and I will think about my CDs, plus I realized
that all the jewel cases are in Baltimroe and I am in Boston so I
woudn't be able to sell the CDs until May anyway.... Oh well. Later.

Jesus, *5* years ago?  I don't know where you're from, but here in the
Midwest A&F is still as strong as ever.  That's the thing about where I'm
from, styles tend to get here a little later and are absorbed at a slower
pace, which means they tend to stay longer too.  EVEN I have an A&F Tshirt.
I bought a plain white, $6 Tshirt from a discount store and wrote
Abercrombie and Fitch on it with black magic marker.  I have no idea why I
get so many stares.

Actually if you want to imagine what my state is like (Nebraska), imagine
antarctica (in the winter at least), add some buildings and populate it with
1.3 million boring, ugly, fat people that have a taste for country music and
line dancing, and that's pretty much it.  You can categorize everyone in one
basic category: All the guys are "A&F" people and all the girls are Dixie
Chicks.  You probably understand the type of person that wears A&F already,
but for those not in the know, "Dixie Chick" would best be described as a
person trying to be pop but still loves their country.  God I need to
graduate soon.

Here here.  I've lost that loving feeling too, however don't worry.  I am
almost 90% sure that, like all mass marketed things, this is just a fad.
People will move on and it may go back to like it was.  Even if it doesn't
and we never have such enjoyment like that again, there is no reason to stop
liking his other stuff is there?  You fell in love with his music because it
was good on its own merits, not because you thought you found an unknown
little jem and by liking it you would become a member of a secret society of
Moby lovers; or if you did then you liked his music for the wrong reasons.
Chill out, stop listening to his albums for a while, and come back to him
some time with a renewed sense of fan-love.

My whole take on the thing is this: I wish EVERY single one of the
artists I love and collect would make it big.  It would be great to be
able to turn on the radio and hear nothing but music *I* like.  It
would be great to know that the artists I respect are making millions
for their music (as opposed to artists I don't enjoy so much).

The only downside I see to becoming mainstream and popular is how the
concerts will be affected.  Most of the people might not be die
hards.. there will be too many people and you might need binoculars to
see the stage.. etc.

I believe Moby will die down big time and he will be our little secret
once again years from now.  But who knows...

Bart,
I can see where you're coming from. Right or wrong I often have those types
of feelings about artists I like too. As you know I am a HUGE
Faithless/Rollo fan and I thought it was cool you mentioned them here.
Being in the US, Faithless is not known well here at all other than by
their small group of fans here and dance music fans who know their club
hits like "Insomnia". They are much bigger in the UK and Europe and I like
it that way. I love being a fan of a great group few know about here. It
makes it easier to get really cool collectible stuff of theirs here, and it
makes the connection with other fans all the more special because you know
what others are missing out on.

Now connect that to Dido. I have known of Dido from her days signing with
Rollo on Faithless and other Cheeky projects. So when her solo CD came out
I bought it the DAY of release, being a Rollo produced CD it was exciting
to have a new CD from a member of the Cheeky family. I saw Dido play in
front of a few hundred people in a tiny club in Pontiac, Michigan, got to
meet her, etc right after the CD came out.
It was cool knowing of this great CD better than the Jewels, Sarah
McClachlan and other female singers clogging up American radio. I always
figured Dido would hit it big here, didn't understand why it took so long
but she has made up for lost time.
She's now huge here and it aggravates me to be on a Dido list and see
people post stuff like "Hey I came across a new Dido track on Napster
called "Flowerstand Man", does anyone know what this is from? A new track?
B-Side?".  I just laugh
at stuff like this from the "I love Dido, I first heard of her from Eminem"
crowd. I guess it shouldn't bug me but it does. I've tried to hip the Dido
list a few times to her work with Faithless but other than the people who
already knew, not many seem to give a shit. Their loss. All I know is Dido
is going to be on Faithless' new CD due in June and I worry a bit that the
"Dido crowd" will jump on that CD but then again I'd like to see Faithless
have more popularity and recognition in the US. But I don't won't it to
come on the back of Dido's popularity, frankly I think Rollo is more
talented than his sister overall anyways.

All of this babbling is a way to say I can understand where you're coming
from. I can understand how people can see it as being "elitist" but I can
see both sides to the story.

Again, this is all from a UK perspective. I think the main difference
between Moby and these other artists you mention (fine as they all are), is
that none of them launched their UK (and European) careers with a huge hit
single supported by daytime radio (unheard of at the time for good music to
be played during the waking hours). I think the only UK comparison to Moby
would be with Prodigy, who also released a low key single before hitting the
higher echelons of the chart with their second release.

Yeah, I've felt like the Play horse has been flogged to within an inch of
its life.

OK, but that's my argument, Moby was never truly exclusive. In fact I think
his entire musical motivation has been to be inclusive, which is why he's
never gone too experimental - not even the alt.quiet mix of Hymn compares to
say Oval, or Mouse on Mars for being experimental.

I think the biggest hole in your argument here is that many of the people
who discovered Moby when they were raving ten years ago are now ten years
older:) Moby is too. That comment is not as stupid as it seems as Moby
naturally makes music for his age peers. I was 28 when 'Go' cam, out and
I've stuck with him.. we've both grown up together. So the gratifying thing
for me now is when I hear that someone younger also digs Play, and has
subsequently discovered those so-called 'cool' Moby records. And if a 45
year old says they like Moby too, I tend to assume they were ravers back in
the day.
Incidentally, Faithless also have an older fan base in Europe. Sure they
have huge pop hits (one the biggest acts in Germany), but their albums sell
to the 24-40 age group.
Oh and I do hope the Pop is a Moby fan. That's an image I'd like to keep
when having anxiety attacks about why I've had my daughter christened a
catholic


I think we differ on our what we consider to be small groups. Of the groups
you mention above only Kosheen have yet to hit the big time in terms of
sales, yet in drum'n'bass circles they are considered to be pretty
mainstream. But I do understand that sense of loss that you feel when an
artist becomes a household name. To illustrate I'll tell you a story about
Air (one of your suggested cool bands). A few years ago I wrote the first UK
article about the French scene. As a result I met, and interviewed all of
the main players a number of times. During one of my early visits I was
given a demo tape by Air. I passed that tape on. They signed to MoWax. Then
Virgin. I've subsequently interviewed them with every new release. I really
felt like they were my discovery. Then they released 'Moon Safari' and
everyone was into them. Suddenly I had to share my secret with people I
didn't like, as well as those I love.

But... the music is still stunning, I still love what they do. I'm just not
a part of a secret elite anymore. Which is liberating really.

Not to be negative, but if anyone remembers how fucking hard it was to get
people to actually do shit on Thanks II, I don't think that it would be as
successful.  Bjork is WORLD FAMOUS, Moby is still, despite what people may
say, modestly famous, and only in certain countries at that.  I doubt we'll
ever see the day when fans put together over 625 remixes of his stuff, even
when you consider that his library of material is quite larger than Bjork.
However if we ever did get to that point I'd be the happiest boy in the
world.

Yup.  Done and done.  I've reinitialized my FTP; so the previous problems
skhouldn't be there.  I'll test them and if they are I'll just reinstall

Yes I am on the list Eric. I must say it feels quite upsetting to think that
my book has caused so much soul searching from Moby. I suppose it must be
very strange to see 35 years of your life, represented in 90,000 words. It
is true that my perspective was and is quasi-objective - I have been a fan
of Moby's music since day one, i genuinely like him as a person and i find
him to be one of the very few interesting artists (from an interview
perspective). however i do at times criticize him in the book - from the
positive position of the critic (ie there are no slag offs for the sake of
it - I'm not a hack!) and he did ask me to retain a critical perspective.
the book is drawn from interviews (mainly by me) going back to the
beginning. from the emails i have received from moby over the last couple of
days, and the wording of the apology, i feel it is seeing his career in
quotes brought together in one package which has caused him to reassess.

all of this said, i certainly don't think he's a jerk. but in reply to his
public apology i'd like to say publicly "Moby, stop beating yourself up for
goodness sake. passion and honesty is not a crime - it should be
encouraged."

Whoa, that would be something.  To tell the truth I have 4 Data CDs of MP3s,
videos, interviews, live stuff, text, pictures,e tc... from the original

i personally would like to see the later with jools holland footage from the
bbc, the gig moby had at the scala in sept 99, all the vinyl only mixes as a
music only soundtrack, moby giving a discussion of his beliefs as a audio
only soundtrack, different angles so you can flip between different versions
of the same music video

and also somethink like the daftclub card that is in the daft punk album so
we can all get our hands on unreleased music by the main man ;-)
