I have a bag of them. I could mail one to you if you don't mind it being
stainless steel. Just e-mail me with an address.

Going on any long trips in the future? Maybe you could convince them that

Did you mic out your cylinder and piston before you replaced the
rings? Did you measure the valve guides stem clearance too? I'm
in that same boat, burning 500mL of oil every 200 miles,
sometimes even more, and I'm looking to do a valve / ring job
myself on my A3. What kind of hone job did you do to your
cylinder? (I've heard merits for both using multiple stones on a
standard honing tool, and for using a "bottle brush" for honing.)

My brother in law (HD ABATE type guy) wears a roller skating
helmet with a phony DOT sticker, hasn't been caught since the
mandatory helmet laws in this state. He isn't the sharpest knife
in the drawer.

Now you say tree hugger like its a bad thing! I'm pro dirt trail
riding, anti-forest clear cutting. If you've seen how
Weyerhaeuser has raped my state, you'd understand why. These
"environmentalists" hearts are in the right place, but they are
targeting the wrong groups.

They will start rattling after a while, no biggie though. Inside there is a
big wire c-clip that holds the spark arrester in place. It gets hot and
loses it tension and falls out and rattles. You can retension and reinstall
it then bend the metal over in a few places so it can't get out again. Also
there is a big coil spring that will eventually sag, I just pull it back to
size and reinstall it. The packing material seems to be of very good quality
and doesn't seem to blow out. There is a baffle plate with 2 small tubes in
it that offer most of the resriction/backpressure. Some people drill some
additional holes here to "open her up". Turns out too loud for my tastes but
does make a difference on the top end. Instead of holes I welded in an
additional tube of aprox. the same size as what was in there, keeping the
designed baffle concept intact. Got louder but not to the level of open
holes. I peeled the cobra sticker off and polished the silencer with brasso,
looks great. wildBill

Speaking of Darr boxes, does anybody know who sells them and whether they
have a web site?
When I was in central America I ran into a Swiss guy riding an Africa Twin
with these boxes and I can tell you: they are bullet proof!
Haven't seen the Touratech ones though....

Just to confuse the never ending luggage attachment thread, I made some bag
mounts to fit the 650 KLR's and I'm offering them for sale. I don't have
pictures available yet, but they look similar to the stock bag mounts on an
R100GS.
These bag mounts allow you to use the leftover bags from your BMW or other
Euro-bike on your 650 KLR. You can use: Krauser's, BMW 'R' cases like the
Vintage, Touring, and City Cases, or Denfield bags. Both the 'belt buckle'
and the 'claw' type latches will work.
These bag mounts also work well for mounting soft luggage and protecting the
plastic frame covers.
If you want to go upscale, the optional BMW adapters for the aluminum Darr
Boxes will work, along with the aluminum Touratech bags and mounts, but call
if you are thinking about purchasing these.
The BMW 'K' cases, BMW Integral cases and the small left side R80GS or
R100GS cases won't fit these mounts.
These high quality bag mounts are made from cold-rolled 5/8 tubing, are TIG
welded, and Grade 8 or better hardware is supplied. They are powder coated
to a satin black. Colors are available for a minor charge.

Subject: Re: (klr650) (NKLR) Tree Huggers
Well, I hug trees. The thing that makes me angry about all of this is that
motorcyclists, environmentalists and hunters aren't enemies, per se. It is
the development interests that pit the us against each other. While we waste
time fighting each other, the developers are eating up the landscape with
Walmarts and $500,000 houses on 3 acres for the yuppie elite. I don't have
any trouble with setting aside wilderness areas where motorcycles and ATV's
aren't allowed if there are sufficient places where we can ride. In this
world of shrinking open places, maybe we should compromise a little and all
work together against the real "enemy" of unbridled (love that word)
development, or the only places to ride will be on the pavement from the
Walmart to the K-mart, and the only excitement in our lives will be in
avoiding the leased Explorers and Expeditions driven by distracted
housewives. No hunting, no riding, and no wilderness left. No wild animals,
as they cannot be tolerated in the suburbs, no place where you can be alone,
no danger in life (except from each other). Actually, probably no
motorcycles except for posers, as they don't fit in any better than the
coyotes. Think about it.
