Dual Star defenders and detractors have me seeing stars.
At the risk of creating another barrage of posts, Dual Star is the
only game in town for some items. They are a small company of
and for enthusiasts. They've put considerable heart and energy
into it.
Could they do better? Sure, for starters they could add staff,
improve their marketing skills, and bring all the manufacturing
in-house to better control delivery dates. Business would boom.
Customer relations could blossom into Four Stars, until surely
one day their CFO will force them to stop supporting the small
KLR niche because it is such a waste of company resources.
The upside would be that you could ride your bike more, because
you wouldn't be waiting by the mailbox....at least until the next
aficionado dreams up a new product for your pleasure.
dawn - bring cheese next time, if you're gonna whine me

Sorry Bryan, but you are completely wrong.
Two are not enough. My Transalp has been down for 3 weeks now. Fortunately, I've
kept my '81 Suzuki TS250 as a spare. I used it a week ago to ride with Kurt and
Kimberly. Two days ago, I went riding with a friend on the Suzuki and broke my
rear brake linkage. Ended up riding home the last 15 miles with no rear brake.
As you can see, 2 bikes may not be enough.
Fortunately, my wife's Yamaha Serrow is still operational....................

Dear Paul,
Maybe it's a custom/social thing... whenever I ride to the local Harley
Dealership here in Singapore, everyone is drawn to my Tengai, and it's
always a good conversation piece ( there's only 2 in S'pore, and probably
<according to the KAW dealer> only 8 surviving KLRs, all in all here on the
island ). Perhaps the HD boys are envious and wished they could pull
wheelies out of the dealership on their hogs as well... heh, heh...
JC
p.s. BTW, there's a "HARLEY PARKING ONLY" signboard at the dealership, and
the Tengai always parks right smack in the middle, if possible, heh, heh...

I had this same problem when I first got my KLR. You just need to get
used to the bike and shift firmly and deliberately. If you try a light
shift you will hit neutral more times than not.

Subject: (klr650) Scottoiler-bilinkular lubing
Greetings half lubed KLRists,
I believe Eric Jazz mentioned the single side lubing of the Scottoiler.
After 19k, my stock chain was thrashed. When I took a very close look at
it, the orings on the inboard side had significantly more cracks than the
outboard side. I believe a fix is in order. Here's my idea to begin the
debate: Splice the oil feeder line midway on the swingarm, run a line
under the swingarm and run it to deliver oil to the inboard side. One must
probably increase the flow to compensate for lubing both sides.
So whaddya think?????
Who wants to be the first to sacrifice their Scottoiler??

Why would you want a stainless rear sprocket? I would think that a
high-carbon alloy steel would wear better.

Perhaps I should recommend my father in-law to him. My father
in-law runs his own consulting firm in Seattle. He helps
businesses (small and large) to be more efficient and flexible to
the changing market, mostly through computer modeling and
computer software and hardware solutions. I don't understand
fully what he does, but I know that he's very good at it. He has
consulted for hospitals all over the country, and for other
business ranging from Musak to Food Services of America to
Microsoft. He has enough flyer miles now for three round trip
tickets to Europe. To bad Randy (my in-law) isn't into
motorcycles, because he's been known to take trade in place of
payment. He consulted for a local harp maker in Seattle called
Dusty strings, and for payment has three harps, two of which are
worth more than baby grand pianos, really beautiful work. My
mother in-law is a harpist and a music practitioner, so she was
very thrilled with the deal. Anyway, it does sound like Mike has
some production problems he needs to figure out. I personally
haven't felt the need to own a center stand yet, but I was
interested in their heat shield.

I used to all the time, for fun, go backpacking, fishing and
hunting and dayhikes with my wife, and in my former carreer I
started out as an 11Bravo, light Infantryman. I then went to
become an 11B2V, Airborne Ranger (sargent E-5). From there I
went to become an 18Delta, Special Forces weapons sargent (E-6).
All of these jobs involved walking huge distances over extreme
terrain carrying extremely heavy loads. I loved my job, and I
still to this day love hiking and hunting and camping. So yeah,
I can see a mailman taking hikes for a hobby. I wonder if
gynocologists are celebet.

If you want to read a really good book on this subject, please
check out, "How Much is Enough? The Consumer Society and the
Future of the Earth" by A. Durning, 1992, published by W.W.
Norton and Co. Its not a thick book, and isn't heavy technical
reading. It just lays out the facts of the consumer society that
we live in and its impact on the global environment. If this
subject really interests you, for some heavier reading try "Green
Planet Blues. Environmental Politics from Stockholm to Rio." by
K. Conca, M. Alberty, and G.D. Dabelko, 1995, published by
Westview Press.
We live in what I like to call the "Burger King Generation" (My
way, Right away!). I have been trying very hard to ease my
personal impact on the environment, as a lifestyle choice, and
I'm wondering all the time about how I can personally do more.
But, unlike most environmentalists, I don't like imposing my
views on others. All I like to do is try and enlighten people to
the facts. The largest and simplest facts are that we, the human
race, have a great impact on the environment, including the
weather, and that we, the human race, are growing. Once these
facts are realized by all, then all of the details as to how to
improve the situation just need to be hammered out. I read the o
ther day that India will exceed the 1 billion mark by next May,
so far only China has done this. But China has now imposed
strict limits on population growth, which isn't possible in any
other country. But still, what is the solution to that? Roughly
one in six people of the world are Indian. I guess we could
always go with Steve Martin's solution, death penalty for parking
violations.

Boy if this isn't an argument for doing your own work, I don't
know what is. Even if a shop offers free installation with the
purchase, I mostly turn them down, or I look over their shoulder
the entire time, and inspect everything that they've touched.
You need to call the Better Business Bureau of the city that you
were in and ask for their help. You could also call the State
Attorney General's office of that state and ask for help. Keep
all of your receipts, including food and lodging, because they
are liable for that as well. Good luck!
