For the most part, keep it under 4000 RPM (with the occassional 3/4 throttle
run-up) for the first 500 miles/800 km. Vary your RPM's. Best to ride off
the freeway so that you're not droning along at the same RPM's all day. At
500, change your oil and filter, lube your cables etc.., and adjust the
valves.

Yes.

No; on/off/reserve.

Seems there are more than I thought (rev counter/
fuel tank/colours etc). Can anyone add any more?
Or point me to a web site with UK bike specs?
(I can't find a UK/European Kawasaki web site.)
Thanks,
Andy

Bugger! I hate it when that happens :-)
I've found out now. I would humbly suggest it would be
worth adding a "Search" link to the archive web page
itself though.

Also keep away from any seals. Shift shaft seal, counter shaft seal, wheel
bearings, your chain with o-rings. I would stay away from the suspension
linkages and steering bearings. The high pressure car wash can inject water
under the lip of a seal and do havoc. I personally never use a high
pressure washer. I think you can do a better job cleaning your bike with a
garden hose and a small hand brush. If you have road grime & bugs etc. then
you will need a degreaser like S100 which works great for an all over
cleaner.
If you ever ride in Moab with a white bike, you soon learn how hard it is to
keep your white bike from turning red. Cleaning your bike as soon as you
can after it gets dirty helps the dirt/mud not leave stains. One product
that I have heard that really works for protecting your plastic and making
it stay looking like new is Silkolene's Pro Prep. You spray it on and it
makes the outside of your plastic form a hard layer that resists stains and
abrasions. Has anyone tried this?

In addition to these items, pressure washes have been known to intrude upon
wheel bearings and wash away the lube. Stay away from these as well.
Of course it would be OK to use the low pressure water from the wand when
the handle is not pulled. This is what I do with my ST1100. Use the soap
and wet it down, use the brush, then go over it woth the low pressure water
to rinse.
A real handy hint for cleaning wheels is to use cream hand cleaner in a tub
with a soft tooth brush. Works very well on chain lube also says a friend
with a ZX-11. I use it before going into the wash and just spray or wipe
the cleaner off. The bonus is when you are finished with the tooth brush
and there is brake dust on your hands, you have hand cleaner right there!
Just bring a rag along to wipe your hands and the rims if needed.
Regards, Thane

Hi Stuart and other listers! My brother and I have made it to Montreal
(from BC). We are staying in the dorms at McGill University. Today we
wandered around Old Montreal and went for a jet boat ride on the Lachine
Rapids. So far we are having lots of fun although there have been some
challenges. The weather was quite frustrating during the first few days. I
actually had to detour on my way south from Fort St. John because of snow
between Jasper and Banf. We've also hit quite a lot of rain, thunder storms,
etc. As well (this is pretty funny looking back) I ran out of gas on the
first day of my trip. I forgot to get fuel when I passed through Grande
Prairie. I ran out just 5 km from Grande Cache. For your information I got
exactly 374 km on that tank of gas (I think we talked about doing this
experiment didn't we Stuart?). Luckily, I was able to flag down a passing
motorhome. It turned out to be a very nice American couple. They siphoned
some gas into a coffee can for me. I've been having lots of troubles with
the Corbin (with a dip) seat. For a few days I was in a lot of pain (to the
point where I thought I might be doing permanent damage to myself :) ). I
actually pulled into a gas station one day and left a message for Stuart
enquiring about a contact number for Russel. I hoped I might be able to get
a "day long" seat shipped to me. Sorry I haven't gotten back to you until
now Stuart. I've since heard from a buddy of mine that there is quite a
long wait list for Russel seats. So... I guess I'll have to get by with the
Corbin. I've actually rigged up a bit of a butt cushion out of a rolled up
T shirt. It helps me get a few more miles in before I need to stop. I can
still only go 130km at the most before I'm in pain. With the slope of the
Corbin, I slide forward and end up with a lot of pressure on parts of my
body that do not like a lot of pressure put on them. Anyways, enough about
that. We are off to Quebec City tomorrow and will stay there for 2 nights.
I'm really enjoying the people in Eastern Canada. They seem very friendly.
For example, we went to buy parking passes for our bikes tonight and the
parking attendant chatted us up for almost an hour. The KLR is doing well.
I'm keeping up to my brother on his YZF 600 for the most part. The
combination of Tim's side racks and Ortlieb saddle bags is excellent. I'm
not sure when I'll get a chance to email again. I hope you are all enjoying
your summer.

wwell, i ordered a progresive rear shock (called fred thursday, arrived
monday) and last night i put it on to replace my blown out stock shock.
i guess i kinda got used to riding on a blown out shock cus it feels a
little weird. . i havent had a chance to fine tune it, but so far its
working well. it feels like the new shock sags more when i sit on it,
but may be that will be different when i up the preload. i have the
damping on 3 out of 5 and i think it may be a little too much for me.
is there a specific method for tuning a shock, or is it just what
feels right thru experimentation?
this weekend i should get a chance to get it all set up right for me.
(anyone need a blown out stock shock for any reason?)

meet some more.

My bike rattles/resonates noticeably too. I finally pinned it down to
the clutch lever. That very small amount of free play allows it to rattle.
Give it a try!

IMS makes a 3.5 gallon tank for the KLR.

1) 2 stages , first few (300 I think) miles under 4000 rpm, next few (up to
600?) under 6000 rpm
2) No tachometer, you must have a specially trained ear to adhere to these
limits.
3) No fuel guage, when bike dies, put it on reserve.. you have minimum 40
miles to find gas ( petrol for the limeys). If you get stranded after that,
lean the bike over on the left side, you have another 10 miles worth of fuel
in the lower right lobe that needs some sloshing to get to the petcock
4) Just kidding on #2, there is a tach. ( I believe that's tacho. For you
poms )

Subject: (klr650) Stupid Questions from an Impatient Newbie
Hi all,
I'm getting my KLR650 delivered next week by a dealer
a long way from where I live (in the UK, KLRs are
currently very hard to find). I have a couple of simple
questions which I could wait until I get the bike/manual
to find out, but I'm too impatient ;-)
1. What is the running-in process?
2. Is there a rev counter?
3. Is there a fuel gauge?
Thanks,
Andy
