You live in a great part of the country.  The company I work for has offices in Eugene and my
friend there has a KLR and a Hawk and we have had many fine riding days riding in the Coastal
& Cascade Ranges.  I got hooked on his KLR when I rode it over to Mt Bachelor to go skiing (it
was springtime).  It was fun (or stupid) riding past the flashing signs saying not to go
further without tire chains!  Had to go out and buy my own KLR.

Jeff:

I can understand taking your gear off but what is the logic of sitting down?  Is it just to
present a target that is a few feet lower?  Plus you had one guy standing up, perhaps in an
effort to help insure the others safety :<).  reminds me of what I was informally taught
during my scuba certification:  There is no way you can swim faster than a shark, but if you
can swim faster than your wife you will probably be OK......

There has been much discussion about the use of motorcycle specific engine
oils vs automotive petroleum base and synthetic base oils.  I use to use
motorcycle specific oils but got tired of being insulted by the price of the
oil.  I tried the top brand automotive oils and ended up with Mobil 1.  Now
the new Mobile 1 "tri-synthetic" oil is inadequate for motorcycle use due to
its dropping of the necessary additives to achieve the new automotive "SK"
standard.  There is also current discussion of adding STP additives to
achieve the older "SG/SH" protective ability necessary for motorcycle
requirements. Then I hear that the STP additives are not available.

I decided to regroup back to using motorcycle specific oils because this
entire thought process reminded me of being in a flat spin in a
high-performance aircraft.  I decided to forgo the insult of paying $5-9
bucks a quart for motorcycle specific synthetic/blends (GS-4, Motul, Mobil
1, Maxima, Bel-Ray EXP, etc.) and starting using what worked for me back in
the early 80's- Torco MPZ petroleum base @ $3 a quart.  I figure this was a
good balance of having the best for my toys while still not being too
insulted by the oil companies and their slick advertising and prices.  My
two cents.

OK, so lightning is just a huge capacitance between the air
(clouds) and the ground, with a very large electropotential
between them.  When it discharges, it arcs between the air and
ground.  Electricity takes the shortest, easiest path, so by
sitting your butt on the ground you have lowered your altitude
and thus lowered your chance of getting struck somewhat.  Like
lightning rods on houses and  trees get hit the most.  We were
just taught that the safest thing to do was to move into an open
area, ground your gear a good distance away from you, and sit
your butt down.  So does it work?  Don't know, but it makes
sense.  Of course the worst part about it is that the entire time
you're sitting there, your are getting drenched from the rain
pissing on you, trying to conserve body heat and not move,
because everytime you do, a new cold, drenched spot of your
uniform touches you.  My platoon sergeant was going around
patting guys on the back, between the shoulderblades, for
torture, if you've ever been that wet without rain gear on you'll
understand.  So I hope that now as a civilian, I won't ever get
caught in a lightning storm again, which is why I wondered about
motorcyclists getting hit.

Dan,

I have posted your question to the KLR650 LIST - there are many there
that will give you some suggestions.

I suppose my second choice for a bike to Central America would be the
BMW F650 or maybe the Triumph Tiger.  If you are not planning on going
off road any bike would do!  I have been through Honduras and Guatemala
and Belize and except for a few places one could ride any street bike.
The KLR is definitely the most fun though!

I went into my dealer last night a saw the Kawasaki flyer for the 2000 model KLR650. That colour may look good on a 1950's UK army Landrover but it looks odd on a modern bike. I only hope it looks better in the flesh. They are expecting the bikes in in August.

If you can't possibly find a klr in toronto, and want to dodge the price
(f650) and weight (of the tiger), than look for a transalp. A guy I talked to
in toronto, said there were several around. Should be a comfortable ride, but
some say the engine's a little too passive.

A shop in upstate NY (Potsdam--don't remember the shop's name right now but
have it at home) had a 1990 (brand new) on his floor a month ago. I doubt
that it has sold because he said repeatedly that he wouldn't take less than
$5000 for it.
