I got a wave this morning from a Harley rider.  It could have been because
the temperature was right about 30 F, rare weather for a Harley to be out
in, and the rider was feeling unusually companionable.

Or it could have been because the rider was a woman.

Sure, why not?  He's taken the time to phone you, and he's got a KLR - he
can't be all bad = )  How far apart are the two of you - or maybe that
doesn't matter - but would the both of you be able to look after it?  Two
heads are often better than one - especially if one of them's Klingon.
(Please don't take this the wrong way Sarah) I think you came down a little
hard on the guy in a couple of ways:  We didn't know how long ago he
reserved the name (which as it turns out was only a few weeks ago); and I'm
hoping you weren't being too serious about the 'unchristian' comment.  Being
as I've got about half a dozen unfinished projects on the go myself, I'm
feeling a little sympathetic.

Actually it's probably a good thing.  Many people are portable, or work from
a number of different sites.  And more people could potentially find their

Why not just assimilate him to the borg? You know, resistance IS futile. I
think Fred coats his parts with an addictive chemical which makes you crave
new parts bi-weekly.

I just spoke to my local bike shop re: Avon Gripsters and h.d. inner tubes
(to replace my stock rear tire, which is about ready for the heap at 1700
mi.). I was told by him that heavy duty tubes aren't necessary with the Avons
because they are a 3 ply tire, whereas a lot of tires are 2 ply. Any opinions
on this? Anyone got flats with Gripsters?

I think the ever popular F.T.W. tattoo (on the inside of the bottom lip) may
stand for "Forget To Wave" .. I wave at every bike rider. With both hands :-P

Yup. With WebRing, one person owns the thing and is in charge. Dedicated
volunteers can be given powers to help administrate...

Just seemed odd that he had multiple rings with no under construction pages or
anything.

Not really. For the sake of the list, I won't go into my personal opinion on
the subject. But if you'd like to discuss it off list, feel free to mail me.
Seems like he can keep his interests separate judging from the page he finished
for his BMW slash 5 ring, so I'm ok with it. (Not that I actually have a
website to add to the ring at this point, anyway...)

There are a lot of ways we can think about this. But to cut to the quick, I'm in favor of
starting a web-ring with some known givens. The long and short is this. Gino started it all
with the KLR Dual Sport News...then the Web-Site that Bill manages...I asked Gino and Bill if I
could start a supplement in the form of a mailing list..Fred adopted us...Cloudhid became the
court jester...Kate big sister, etc.....now Gino has expanded to DSN.

I say let's start a web-ring with Sarah as the ringmaster because she has a sense of how this
all holds together. I have nothing to say about Brian except I find it strange to not be in
touch with any of the above and set out to establish a web-ring when you haven't even
established your own web site.

There are plenty of good names and after the chatter and suggestions this afternoon I secured
about 3 or 4 of them in addition to Sarah's...they all have a mission related to promoting the
same mission as DSN, viz., dual sport motorcycling, safe motorcycling etc.

Sarah, I'd be happy to send you my confirmation emails with password's...one that was accepted
was Kawasaki KLR650 Dual Sport Motorcycle Web-Ring; another was Dual Sport News Motorcycle
Web-Ring...it is a little of the tail wagging the dog kind of thing...

This is just my take. Like Bill, I like to remember my roots and debts of allegiance...for Bill
and I that points in one direction...to Gino.

I run heavy duty tubes with my Gripsters because I'm paranoid.  I've had a
little theory lately that the added mass of a heavy duty tube might retain
heat and thus cause slightly more wear, but then the other part of me says
that the extra mass might help dissipate heat.  The third part of me can't
decide, and the fourth wonders if the answer could be in bearly one sentence.

Many good points as usual Kurt!  I'll second that.  I had trouble
understanding the idea of joining the KLR list only to get the webring setup
and then ciao to the list.  He can still have his webring and use many of
the same sites.

Let's have our own webring.  I'd prefer a general dualsport webring with an
emphasis on KLRs and other bikes without a dedicated webring.  Sarah are you
okay with the admin job?

I'll be putting up a page now that school is done. So sign me up.

Gino....if you can forward a copy of the secret code words, handshakes
etc..I'd appreciate it....=)

I agree with this - there's a known group here who have spent countless
hours providing free information - the way the Internet ought to be.  I
smell something odd and vote with Kurt.  Likely, this isn't about rejecting
somebody's good intentions...it's more about what we know is reliable.
