In my last 150 or more messages 40 have "bear" in them!
Is this list about motorcycles or is it an annex of some National =

KLR-related topic on this long!

You didn't make the requisite $300 purchase from Fred Hink nor did you
subscribe to DSN, prepaying Gino for the next five years' issues. Start
there and as always....HTH!

Don,
Set your e-mail filter to delete mgs with bear in them. Problem solved.

I use it all the time and hardly notice a thing and hadn't looked at the

Mark, people use the air screw to enrichen their idle to quarter throttle
response, but that is the wrong way to do it. The pilot jet should be
replaced with one size bigger and adjust the air screw mabe a half a turn or
slightly more to allow quicker drive away times and smoother idle to quater
throttle response. The bigger pilot will actually help all the way up the rev
range because the pilot bleeds at all throttle settings. frank

Sorry Tom, documented in Alaska many times over, and here in Montana. One of
my customers is a Montana Fish & Wildlife Officer and has investigated
several successful self-defense episodes of
" handgun versus bear" and in one situation the caliber was a
.357 magnum, which broke the bear`s front shoulder, which didn`t kill him,
but allowed the fisherman to escape.
I was in Alaska 10 years, living on the Kuskokwim River and am very
familar with many instances where a handgun stopped an attack,
not to mention my own two incidents. I will say that with over 30+
confrontations (here and Alaska) I successfully avoided conflict except for
those two times.
In later years this

The .500 Linebaugh Magnum is one of the most favored
thick-skinned game hunting pistols currently in use. It has taken virtually
every species of big game, here and abroad. Ross Siegfrid
has even taken Cape Buffalo and African Lions with it. I agree, it isn`t a
fun gun to shoot, but it can`t be shot like a small caliber pistol. That`s
the reason the best grip style is the Bisley. You should allow the gun to
rotate in your hand and let it bend your arms at the elbow.
My .45 Long Colt loads up to equal and exceed .454 Casull numbers
and my wife has hunted with it.
I`ve hunted everything from whitetail to 2000lb. Alaska moose with my
Ruger .44 mag. and in the several moose I`ve taken, only two required a
second shot.
>
> Then again, even the big Linebaugh has only a fraction of the muzzle

As a former Alaska guide and outfitter, I`ll have to dispute the above
statement. A lot of guides did and many still use the venerable
.375 H&H. I started out with a Weatherby .300 Magnum when I first joined
the Alaska Guide Association and eventually the trend went
back to the proven 45-70. Most back-up and defense shots are taken at close
range, and the fat, big ( 500 grain handloads) slow 45-70
has proven since the 60`s to be an excellent close range, one shot
bear stopper. Virtually no caliber is adequate in unexperienced hands. At
the time that I was working for the guide that trained me,
he had made 7 back-up grizzly kills, one was with a Weatherby .370,
the other six with the .45-70. He had one griz kill with his .44 mag.
during an attack invoving a client`s downed Caribou.
Keep in mind that it`s not just caliber or power, but a well placed
shot. Most hunters that have never hunted big game think bigger is better,
not always. Non-residents show up here to hunt Elk with
.300 Winchester Mags, .300 Weatherby`s, even .458`s. Do you realize that
most residents and experienced elk hunters around here use .308`s, .264`s,
30-06`s ...etc. I personally hunt with my pistol, but
when I`m on the East side, and know my shots will be over 100 yds.
I use a 30-06.
The key is penetration, with enough energy left to cause damage, not just
power.
> Handgun vs. a big Brownie is by no means a good bet, no matter the power

>'96 KLR 650
It`s a terrible bet. And honestly, your best bet in an attack involving
an Alaska Brown or grizzly, is to play dead, but down here in the
Lower 48, the better bet (again, I strongly emphasize) in experienced
hands, is the handgun ( and that`s if I don`t happen to be carrying a rifle,
which I wouldn`t unless I was hunting). That`s my opinion and I stand behind
it with experience. I refuse to play dead when I have a proven means of self
defense at hand, especially when it`s worked before.

Subject: (klr650) 500 mile check
My A13 has just been returned to me after its 500 mile check. When I first
took it in, I asked if they check the valves and I was told not only that
they would be checked, but how the whole procedure is carried out. I did
"mark" my KLR and this proved to me when I picked it up that the valves were
checked. Then again, you really only know if you are there, but I have a
job. Now I can officially go over 4000rpm which I am very happy about. The
cost of the service was $136.48. This dealership offers a discount to people
who buy their bikes from them. If I had purchased the bike elsewhere, the
bill would have been $170. When I picked it up, the mechanic who did the
service was not there. I was invited back to discuss the details with him
later. I have had good luck with this dealership in the past. Glad that's
over with.

Vik is right, it`s all made by 3M and most auto stores carry it. It cost me
$3 to cover my A9`s light. It is a self stick application, the same as
the Dual-Star stuff. I saw a Harley with it attached to the front of his
hard-cases, to prevent rock chips. It works great but is a pain to get off.
A customer told me that Chrystler charged him $400 as an option to put the
stuff on his headlights and tail-lights.

Right, as to them following a CO2 gradient, this is interesting, but places
I've been, the air is so dense with the little bastards that they are always
within a few feet from you anyway. I've personally had good luck with skin
so soft. But then I was putting all manor of stuff on, trying desperately
to keep the little blood suckers away. I had this camo colored insect net
you wear over your head, like a bee keeper. I tell you, they could swarm
you so bad that they could drive you insane, even if you didn't get bit.

Oversized if you want to just squeak by for street legal, not for those who
ride on the street every day and need them. I kind of like the turn
signals. I think that they are definately better than those on the Honda
XL500S and XL600R that I've owned. I'm not too fond of the switch

What was the difference in atmospheric pressures, temps and all that from
your baseline reading?
Also, with the fast roll on, we are talking about a what, 16% improvement
over stock? I'd say that you'd definitely notice that from the seat of your
pants.

I remember in Ranger School in Florida how I noticed that the Ranger
Instructors all carried live rounds in their pistols, while the rest of us
were packing hundreds of pounds of blanks. I remember being so tired and
thinking that their rounds might be for students that got seriously out of
line or something. I didn't think about the gators until later.
